The job of the president is freighted with awesome responsibilities. These include protecting the American homeland and keeping it and its citizens safe from harm, and working with Congress to pass laws that will benefit the American people by promoting their prosperity and preserving their freedoms. In ways, it is much like being a juggler, having to keep several balls in the air at once.

Of course, if any of part of a president’s grand agenda starts going south, he can always elect to drop the ball and focus the American people’s attention on another that he is sending aloft.

So it with the current juggler-in-chief. As he and Congress head off on their summer vacations, he has decided to let fall the ball marked “ObamaCare,” so it can safely be kicked out of sight. Better to have the ball fall back to earth than watch his poll numbers follow the same course.

Of course, he needs a replacement ball to keep the act alive. Hence his sudden refusal to stand in the way of AG Eric Holder’s investigation into alleged abuses perpetrated by CIA interrogators against terrorism suspects. As William Murchison notes in a column in the Dallas Morning News, this will have the added effect of placating the extreme left wing of the Democrat party, which is growing ever more disenchanted with its fair-haired boy.

As Obama surely knows, there are risks involved in heading down this path. First it is certain to have a chilling effect on future CIA investigations of hot leads. What operative in his right mind is going to pursue such a lead if he knows that doing his job may result in his dossier ending up in a filing cabinet of some special prosecutor’s office. Second, for Obama, this move opens a Pandora’s box that may end up containing unimaginable horrors for him when his own presidency ends.

All this is going to do cause CIA agents to ‘forget’ to include certain details in their reports.

…. and third: The attempt at distraction from a failing policy (healthcare) is so obvious that it wont work, and even more people will be sensitized to his use of that particular ploy.

As Obama surely knows

He either doesn’t know or doesn’t care.

I suspect the former.
