I’m as shocked as you. The timing of the hire is also notable; it was made public the day before the SEIU’s notorious stomping of protesters at Russ Carnahan’s town hall meeting, but I only recently found out about it.
And to think, we assumed Carnahan and the union were connected. Little did we realize how closely.
Posted 1:30 a.m. Wed., Aug. 5: U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan announced Tuesday that he has hired Sara Howard as his new St. Louis-based director of communications for his congressional operation — a choice that rekindles her old political ties with the Carnahan family….
Since 2000, Sara Howard has built a long political resume. She served as communications director for former U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton, D-Minn., and was the national spokeswoman in 2004 for America Coming Together, a massive independent (and pro-Democratic) effort to register voters around the country. Howard also has been the national media relations chief for the Service Employees International Union, and was among the key operatives in labor’s successful 2006 statewide campaign to win voter approval of Proposition B, which increased Missouri’s minimum wage.
Carnahan relies heavily on the Democratic Party’s talking points for his supremely-weak political voice. It’s now crystal clear where he’s getting his political muscle going forward.
