A New Definition of Chutzpah

[ End of Life Issues ]
You’ve probably heard the definition of chutzpah: A boy who’s convicted of murdering his parents and begs the judge for leniency on the grounds that he’s an orphan. Now we’ve got an example that’s almost as… well, audacious.
A few months ago, President of the United States Barack Hussein Obama said this about his grandmother:
President Barack Obama said his grandmother’s hip-replacement surgery during the final weeks of her life made him wonder whether expensive procedures for the terminally ill reflect a “sustainable model” for health care.
The president’s grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, had a hip replaced after she was diagnosed with cancer, Obama said in an interview with the New York Times magazine that was published today. Dunham, who lived in Honolulu, died at the age of 86 on Nov. 2, 2008, two days before her grandson’s election victory.
“I don’t know how much that hip replacement cost,” Obama said in the interview. “I would have paid out of pocket for that hip replacement just because she’s my grandmother.”
Obama said “you just get into some very difficult moral issues” when considering whether “to give my grandmother, or everybody else’s aging grandparents or parents, a hip replacement when they’re terminally ill.”
Which is why he now wants the government to take more of a hand in those decisions. Which is why, apparently, we should listen to him.
Then yesterday, during his “townhall” meeting in Colorado, Obama said this:
“I just lost my grandmother last year. I know what it’s like to watch somebody you love, who’s aging, deteriorate and have to struggle with that,” an impassioned Obama told a crowd as he spoke of Madelyn Payne Dunham. He took issue with “the notion that somehow I ran for public office or members of Congress are in this so they can go around pulling the plug on grandma.”
And thus, we have a new definition of chutzpah: A President of the United States who complains about the expense of alleviating his dying grandmother’s suffering, and who then uses her death as evidence of his compassion.
You may not have run for office specifically to pull the plug on grandma, Mr. President, but you’re obviously not going to let her get in your way.
P.S. Speaking of hip replacements, Biden’s a pretty swingin’ guy.

he didn’t complain about the expense – he said he would have done anything to get her that hip replacement. It’s other people’s grandmothers whom he seems to have a problem with.

His point was that she was a burden to society.

I’m still waiting for all the terminology to be defined, before I can consider spending time reading legislation. Take ‘terminally ill’ for example. I take it to mean that someone is afflicted with an incurable disease that will ultimately result in death. Does that include juvenile diabetes? Leukemia? Kidney disease?
Our lives are not infinite. They come to an end. Are we all ‘terminally ill’ then? Of course not, we are not all ill. But if obesity shortens lives, is ‘fat disease’ a ‘terminal ailment?’
For the purposes of this particular health care scam, who makes the call of what’s terminal? Some treatments can allay the most serious symptoms and extend life, but it’s the cost/benefit ratio that has become the touchstone for insurance coverage arguments.
If you value your life, pay for it yourself.
Peri Winkle on August 16, 2009 at 7:40 AM
You know what else is chutzpah? Demonizing special interest groups to push health care reform while getting them to bankroll your ad campaign.

Absolutely correct! How many will have missed this moment thanks the scrubbing of yet another Obama hypocrisy?

That reminds me of a funny story involving one of those evil, cut off your foot for the money, doctors.
My mother was dying and her hip literally disintegrated as a result of her chemo therapy. No body knew how long she had, so they did the very risky hip replacement surgery even though she was struggling with double pneumonia. After the new hip was in, they got her up to “walk” exactly one time and she took a single independent step on it.
A few days later we were all in her room having a consult with her oncologist and the doctor treating the lung issues when the orthopedic came in for a follow up exam. I think he was in the room a whole 45 seconds. Took a quick peek at the surgery site and proudly announced that he had done a great job and the hip should last for at least ten years and provide mom with plenty of support! When he left everyone cracked up, even mom!

Isn’t that like taxing cigarette sales to pay for anti-smoking ads and treatment? The more successful they are, the less they have to spend on being successful!
InTheBellyoftheBeast on August 16, 2009 at 9:47 AM
However, he won’t pay a dime for Auntie Zumie who is living oceanside in South Boston having a good life at the expense of the Massachusetts taxpayer. Do as a say not as I do.

The fact that we’re ven talking about these things is sickening, especially given Obooba’s assinine remarks about $50k foot amptations and pediatricians yanking tonsils for extra dough. He is totally clueless and is leading the “reform” effort.

This guy redefined chutzpah when he threw Rev. Wright under the bus. This BS about the grandmother is nothing!
rockmom on August 16, 2009 at 3:30 PM
The obvious answer is to terminate people as soon as they pass their “productive” prime. That way we won’t only not have to deal with them being less “productive”, we won’t have to deal with them at all!
Thanks Barack! That thought would’ve never crossed my mind if it hadn’t been for you!

Hey why can’t the Americans people have a hip replacement?

Biden would be a hip replacement. At least he tells the truth sometimes (even though its totally by accident).

At the risk of being banned, let me preface my comment by saying I hope Obama lives to be 100 years old and mine is the last ugly face he sees.
If the value of human life is going to be measured by the cost that life costs society then……draw your own conclusion.

When Granny comes home with some pills in a plastic bag
Hurrah! Hurrah!
Obama will give her a hearty high five then
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The Emanuels will cheer, the Kevorkians will shout
The eugenicists they will all turn out
And the old folks will all be dead by Christmas time next year!
Get ready for the Ezekiel Emanuel Jubilee
Hurrah! Hurrah!
He’ll give Dr Obama three times three
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The Doctor of Life and Death degree is ready now
To place upon Obama’s Godly brow
And he will feel so happy and gay
When Pallbearers carry Grandma and Grandpa to the funeral home

More proof positive that the lightworker should not be involved in either the administration of, delivery of, ethics of, nor valuation of medical care for human beings.
Barack the empty suit continues to struggle with narrowing down the important value decisions involved in the care of the terminally ill or injured to a mere dollar figure. The struggle he has emanates from the same tiny corner of his dark heart where our creator tasked us to care for human beings in whom he placed a certain dear value. The same corner of his heart that Obama won’t listen to since its surrounded by necrosis and shouted down by other misled fascists near him. Where’s little Suzy Who when you need her on Christmas morning?

Good catch, JT.
Obama like any Liberal is proud to have the correct feelings about every issue. They fact that he cannot form a realistic program to address those feelings is where he has come up short.

As I tweeted Friday, “Obama threw his own Grandma under the bus. Do you really trust him with yours?” He was willing to tarnish the memory of the woman who raised him by making his “typical white person” comment. And now he uses the end of life experiences of that “typical white person” to make more political points. I find it amazing how frequently I’ve been disgusted by President Obama’s behavior.

The Chutzpah in Chief has the greenest grandma of all, in the entire world. He gets the most mileage out of her.
Environmentalists rejoice!
Schadenfreude on August 16, 2009 at 4:17 PM
Well, what do you expect? The Obamabots will eat this up as both proof that “death panels” are a good thing, proof that Obama manages to oppose them.
Much like Maureen Loud’s column where she pretends she doesn’t know the difference between “end of life care” and the notion of “rationing health care”. The liberal drones will eat that up too. Feel free to lie all you want, just as long as you arrive at an end conclusion that they already agree with.
ynot4tony2 on August 16, 2009 at 4:18 PM
He’s not just complaining about the expense of alleviating his dying grandmother’s suffering, but wanting to outlaw others from the choice of this option altogether. ObamaCare would not only ration such people out of treatment, but would forbid you from buying the treatment on your own, through private insurance or even out of your own pocket.
First we got a boy who’s convicted of murdering his parents and begs the judge for leniency on the grounds that he’s an orphan.
Then we got Cindy Sheehan exploiting her son’s death to fight against the very cause that he gave his life fighting for.
Now we get Obama using his grandmother… again.
petefrt on August 16, 2009 at 4:20 PM
Grandma was a health care burden to society but her death pays dividends to Obama’s emotionally bankrupt health care plan.
fourdeucer on August 16, 2009 at 4:22 PM
Now, now NOW! is the moment for Republicans to put forth all the great, conservative ideas they have been pushing for health care reform. And they should preface their remarks with, “Now that the President shares our opinion that his plan won’t work…” (See what I did there? They shouldn’t say just “the public option”, they should say “his plan”.)
Knott Buyinit on August 16, 2009 at 4:38 PM
Government won’t “pull the plug on Grandma,” it will keep her from getting “plugged in” in the first place.
29Victor on August 16, 2009 at 4:39 PM
Obama’s a dirtbag – and a true dyed-in-the-wool Communist …
He’ll say anything to have his way.
Make no mistake – this guy has an agenda and it’s to change this nation into a socialist country through the legislative process.

If just half of America is one-eighth as disgusted with this corrupt lying little crypto-marxist wanker as I am then maybe there is hope.
rrpjr on August 16, 2009 at 4:53 PM
Actualy Chutzpah is what we will see next. The left went into this scheme convinced they could and would absolutely control health care, destroy the insurance industry, and use the power granted to themselves as a result of the scheme, to stay in power for decades.
Instead they are going to get, at the very most, insurance reform and no government control in addition to no massive government vote buying scheme.
The chutzpah will be in the left pretending this new reality was what they desired all along and their taking credit for this new plan if/when it works.
Think Clinton with welfare reform.
