The Aggressor State

posted at 12:05 pm on August 1, 2009 by

Some people don’t like using the term “liberal” to describe the Left, since modern conservatism is the true inheritor of classical liberalism. There’s certainly nothing “liberating” about the monster state Democrats are constructing, in which freeborn men and women wear chains forged from 1300-page energy bills and trillion dollar health-care takeovers. The Left is always looking for a new brand name, as each of their previous names becomes a dirty word. I’m not eager to help them with their marketing efforts, but a more accurate name than “liberals” would be “aggressors.” Barack Obama may have little skill at effectively governing, but he is eminently qualified to be Commander-in-Chief of the Aggressor State.

The Left is always on the attack, because the way it requires people to live is contrary to their normal tendencies. It’s debatable whether America is currently a conservative nation, but every family and community is essentially conservative by nature. The ideas we closely associate with the modern Right are the common-sense, default behavior of people left to their own devices: free enterprise, freedom of speech, freedom of association, strength in defense, respect for private property, and reverence for the value of tradition. The modern Left does not like any of those things, or at least considers them all negotiable in value. The Left obviously believes its morally superior values take priority over free enterprise. Freedom of speech and association are trumped by racial agendas. Liberal intellectuals have long viewed private property as not merely an impediment to socialist designs, but an outright evil. Defense is the only area of government spending Democrats ever feel comfortable with cutting. The Left has nothing but contempt for tradition, and often mistakes this contempt for a sign of intelligence. Ignorant of its own intellectual history, modern liberalism doesn’t think anyone else’s intellectual history matters, either. The tired old New Deal programs and Keynesian voodoo of the Obama Administration can seem like fresh and new ideas, provided you can convince yourself history began in November 2008.

Because liberalism defines itself as transformative, it is very comfortable with aggression. This posture serves them well with a public that believes “progress” is inherently positive. The business of building the modern super-state has been a sustained attack, using cultural pressure, legislative power, and the blunt instrument of loyal voting blocs to beat Middle America into submission. The goal of the Left is to convince the middle class to give it the power to do things they would never be depraved or dishonest enough to do themselves. Ordinary people refer to the “redistribution of wealth” as “theft.” If a man wearing a tailored suit and power tie came to your door one day, and offered to take care of your health, in exchange for surrendering all control over your medical decisions to a board of faceless strangers – who also demand unlimited control over every part of your life that might conceivably impact your health – you’d slam the door in his face and call the cops. If you caught someone writing himself a $4000.00 check from your checkbook, and he explained he needs the money as tribute to his Church of Global Warming so they can save the world from an imaginary evil, you’d shoot first and call 911 later. The mission of the Left is to convince people that all of these outrages become virtuous when elected officials perpetrate them. After all, “they won.”

The Left phrases everything in the most urgent terms, because offense requires initiative. Everything it does is an assault that must be launched immediately, with every moment of delay helping the enemy… and the Left has an insatiable hunger for enemies. It prefers those enemies to be faceless, because that also makes the enemy voiceless: white racists, the Evil Rich, Big Business, Wall Street fat cats… You can tell the Left is getting desperate when it starts naming its targets, as with the weird tirades Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama launched against insurance companies and tonsil-stealing doctors, respectively.

Because it is perpetually at war, the Left is quick to turn personally vicious. No weapon was too cursed or cruel to use against Sarah Palin. An inconvenient Inspector General is declared senile, so he can be swiftly disposed of. Rush Limbaugh’s patriotism is heatedly questioned. Dick Cheney is the devil. Those who oppose cap-and-trade are “traitors to the Earth,” as Paul Krugman put it. The spray of vitriol would have been splashed over more targets if Palin hadn’t been around to absorb so much of it.

We have arrived at a moment when the Left has complete control over every branch of government, and the government has completed its metamorphosis into the Aggressor State, declaring war against its own citizens. It’s no wonder the Obama Administration is so half-hearted and inept at foreign policy – it has little time to waste on foreign threats, because it sees too many enemies inside its own borders. Every foreign policy incident since January has seemed like an annoying distraction to Obama, whose dealings with both allies and adversaries abroad have the character of a man sighing and checking his watch, eager to get back to the important work at home. The declared enemies of this Administration include insurance companies, heavy industry, oil companies, talk radio hosts, banks, citizens who ask inconvenient questions, and everyone making over $200k per year. That’s a formidable order of battle. Who’s got time for oppressed Iranians when you need to defeat half of America to advance your agenda?

The Aggressor State goes berserk when its designs are frustrated. Obama is smart enough to understand the political value of his carefully manufactured aura of serene post-partisanship, so he hasn’t taken to pounding his podium and screaming “no, no, no” like Bill Clinton in the early 90s. Obama is utterly finished the moment his Joe Cool mask slips, and he knows it. He looked more confused than angry in the infamous press conference that ended with his thoughtless comments on the Henry Gates arrest. He couldn’t help making those comments, because racism – real or imagined – is the one thing he can get away with being nakedly angry about. The other leaders of the Aggressor State have already gone mad with rage, and the beating they’re going to take from their constituents over summer recess will probably make them crazier.

Some wonder if the mounting public opposition to ObamaCare will frighten the Democrats away from it. I think they’ll make a concerted push to ram it down everyone’s throat, rallying faint-hearted congressional Democrats with any necessary combination of threats and rewards. Nationalized health care is the decisive battlefield for the Aggressor State’s war on its citizens. If the State wins this one, there will be no further meaningful resistance, until the whole system collapses. That will be a new war for the Left, but I think its leaders will be unable to pass up on the opportunity to win a final victory in the war they’ve been fighting against the American republic for the last century. They only need to hold their reluctant congressional troops together for one final charge. The most urgent task awaiting every American who still values his freedom is frightening them enough to break that charge.

Great and accurate observations.

Conservative are naturally reluctant to fight, not because they are cowards but because they prefer to go about their business and let others go about theirs.

But when the business of others is to coerce all, they are forced to fight.

What troubles me about the health care situation over the congressional break is that the other side doesn’t seem to be concerned. That’s because they have seasoned thugs (e.g. ACORN) to attend town hall meetings. There’s going to be trouble and they will blame it on our guys. The media will help.

Who would have thought in America that one would have to be engaged every minute of every day in order not to be enslaved by the federal monster?

Also, are these Democratic Congress people to dense to see they are going to be discarded after this vote? When they’ve delegated everything to executive branch bureaucrats, what use are they to Obama?

I was on DKos the other day – surfing around – and I found that there is a A LOT of anti-Southern stuff on their. I mean – really degrading stuff towards Southerners.

I hope that continues – and becomes a dominant thing. The one thing I’ll say about we Southerners is the more someone complains about us and tries to “change us” – the more we dig our heals in. I think it’s programed into our DNA or something. I mean – I believe 90% of Southerners really could have given a rat’s arse about slavery – they were just pissed that the North felt so superior and looked down on them. I think the same thing happened in the 60 with civil rights.

So I hope they keep that sentiment up – because it means we’ll be a bastion of conservatism for quite awhile. I believe Robert Bork predicted that America would collapse into “enclaves” of conservatism. Well – I think it’s here now.

There is a term for the left that always truly fits them: National Socialists. Nazi’s.

When you get past the all of the Hitler-focused racism and historical imagery surrounding Nazi Germany and get down to the nitty-gritty there isn’t even a degree of separation from the beliefs of the founders of the Nazi movement and the actual beliefs of Obama, Pelosi, Soros, or Saul Alinskly.

Alinsky himself said you only use the protest and the ballot until you can use a bullet to achieve your aims.

They only need to hold their reluctant congressional troops together for one final charge.

Health care really is the golden handcuffs for everyone in this country. If the statists win the fight over health care, and then leverage it with control of energy, freedom will be lost.

Those are some very strong words, Doc. Accurate. But the implications are astounding.

You misunderstand their model. The reason that we are kept in a constant state of emergency (whether real or imagined) is that quick action in a democracy is only possible at a crisis point, where constitutions usually reserve enhanced executive powers. The model is that the nation will become acclimated to a chief executive with steadily accreting powers, eventually becoming nearly absolute. However, to not bother the people too much, Congress will continue to be honored, probably more than currently, and senatus consulta will be carefully prearranged so that only the smallest of changes, if any, are necessary to the Constitution. Nothing will change, but everything will change. See: Marius, Sulla, Pompey Magnus, Julius Caesar, and Augustus Caesar.

Its just so mind-boggling to me. I can’t really identify with any part of the Left’s platform; it almost as though its written in Latin… or by Gelgameks.

The left has always been the violent ones and unlike any other religion, the religion of communism has killed hundreds of millions.

Why can’t they just be honest and go with ‘socialists’?

Vashta.Nerada on August 1, 2009 at 1:38 PM

Friedrich Hayek described all of this beautifully in “The Road to Serfdom” which in my opinion is one of the most important books ever written. Nazis were his subject but he later said that this was only because the Nazis were fresh in everyone’s minds at the time the book was written and that in hindsight the Soviet Union would have made for a better example. No matter, he explained perfectly how central planning will always lead to tyrannical dictatorship and the destruction of all personal and economic freedoms.

It is a book that should be read by every adult in America. There is an interesting summation of the book’s message in cartoon format on the Mises.org site:

Sharke on August 1, 2009 at 1:47 PM

It’s worth mentioning that while Hayek used “war” as an example of a crisis which leads people to give up their economic freedoms, any other crises will do – including a credit crunch which has been engineered by the state itself.

Sharke on August 1, 2009 at 1:49 PM

If the State wins this one, there will be no further meaningful resistance, until the whole system collapses.

If the state wins this one, we need to help push it to collapse, the sooner the better.

See: Cloward-Piven strategy.

I kinda wonder if the perverse success of the “Cash for Clunkers” program is a Cloward-Piven thing.

Let’s call a spade a spade; the Left are terrorists. They have formed sleeper cells in our neighborhoods that are coming out, into the open, in attack mode. They live among us. They have republicans in tow that will go their way when the heat is dialed up just high enough. If they lose any ground on any issue or any seats in November, what we have witnessed up to now will seem like child’s play. Don’t forget they threw explosives at their neighbors before – it’s like riding a bike.

Agreed. Get ready for the whirlwind. Get ready for attempts not just to divide us, but to splinter us. Get ready for the revelation of all kinds of dirty secrets (true or otherwise)regarding those who stand in the way. Be prepared to see anyone who tries to defend the Constitution be destroyed in the court of public opinion, and stand by for all manner of new crises to distract us from our objective.

Of course, nobody can splinter you if you insist on being united. No dark exposes can distract you unless you allow your attention to be diverted, and, without your consent, nobody can diminish your support for those to stand up for what is right. This is the time to put aside foolish differences and work together.

If thousands of military members can put aside personal agendas, forget about our petty self-interests, and avert our eyes from differences that prevent us from working together – all to present a united front to defend our constitution here, half a world away, where conditions are far from optimal, is it too much to ask of those we leave at home, who enjoy all the comforts we sacrifice to ensure, to do the same, for the same purpose?

Steven on August 1, 2009 at 2:42 PM

I couldn’t agree more. Historical labels now range from inadequate to perverse. I’ve begun using the term “predatory left,” but to each his own.

Outstanding, Doc. Outstanding.

Maybe you’d expand it into a companion book to Levin’s Liberty and Tyranny?

“We have always been at war with Oceana”

But I beg to differ about conservatives. I think all of us are bigger cowards than our enemies. Part of the reason is that the vast majority of local, state, and federal bureaucrats are leftists and have no problem abusing their power to benefit both themselves personally and their ideology (which wants to increase government, so that benefits them in a broader sense). Our individualistic ideology is no match for a collective backed up by the coercive guns of the State.

I am unsure how we overcome this march of the fascists. Mark Steyn points out how no one seems to be asking the question “by what right does the federal government take over healthcare”. Why do I allow confiscatory taxation to support the 40+% non-taxpaying citizens in their never-ending quest for greater entitlements? Fighting them individually guarantees a quick trip to the jail–if not just getting shot. Because government’s enforcers do not really care about much other than order–any order.

Joy on August 1, 2009 at 5:45 PM

Good article. In the UK the problem is similar and liberty is already on a defensive footing.

To overcome this ‘aggressor government’ it is necessary to change the hearts of men so that they cease to support it.

Most men have a nature that is most comfortable when ruled and the promises of the collectivist ruler appeal most greatly to their lazy, untrained and undisciplined minds, thus they vote again and again for their own bondage without ever realizing that they do so.

To change their hearts they must see something greater than temporal comfort, guaranteed lifestyles, free medical aid and the accursed notion of ‘equality’.

I don’t know the numbers for slaveholders in the old south, but I would be surprised if it was as high as %10, and the other %90 was actually suffering economically from the slave holding (though I don’t know that they were aware of it). Most were probably incensed over the tariff issue.

Excellent overall analysis, Doc. And I agree completely.

The only problem is there is no way to stop them, and I think that Pelosi “get’s it”. Politics and election cycles turn on a dime, and even if the voting public were to ultimately poll at 99% against national health care, they could still pass it after the August recess, and get away with it.

That’s because there’s still more than a year’s time for them to recover and find something else to whip up the masses over before next year’s mid-term elections. With the date of instituting national health care so many years in the future, by next year the whole thing will be out of sight out of mind for an unfortunately high number of Americans, and the Democrats can still put on some dog and pony show with all kinds of smoke and mirrors to deflect America’s attention from the fiasco legislation they’ve been enacting.

Hubris and pure arrogance, and a sophisticated sense of the power they now wield, is what will carry the day for them. That’s why so many of our conservative leaders in all branches of conservative media are blasting the warnings long and loud right now. They understand progressives and liberals, and the statist mindset, and they know that it will require almost every single conservative or conservative leaning person in this country to become an “activist” to counteract the vagaries of election and news cycles. It’s the only way to win back enough seats in Congress to break the Democrat’s stranglehold on this country and it’s branches of government.
