The Vulnerability of Black Men In America

posted at 2:13 pm on July 24, 2009 by

On the subject of his now-infamous arrest, Henry Gates said, “This isn’t about me; this is about the vulnerability of black men in America.” We are saddled with entirely too many arrogant people who think of themselves as icons, their lives needing only a sprinkle of controversy and media attention to blossom into historical moments. If this incident turns out to be “about” anything more than a rude man being treated rudely by a cop, it would be about the lack of responsibility and humility in our floundering President. Maybe the President’s unseemly haste to turn a legal matter he admitted to knowing nothing about into a major racial incident, along with an offhanded insult to the intelligence of police officers, will turn into a “teachable moment” for black voters, and make them less vulnerable to voting for shadowy con artists because of their skin color.

One thing black men are definitely vulnerable to is violent crime. Blacks represent about 14% of the general population, but they make up nearly half of murder victims. For decades, they have been thirty to forty percent more likely to suffer from violent crime than the general population. You will notice that white liberals are much more enthusiastic about springing black criminals from their “disproportionate levels of incarceration” than the law-abiding black citizens who must deal with them, once they’ve ditched their orange jumpsuits. The best things society could do to help innocent black men avoid being robbed and murdered are providing enhanced access to lawful, registered firearms for self-defense, more aggressive prosecution of the criminal element, and more police protection. Professor Gates is not doing black men any favors on the latter count, and I doubt they can expect much help from President Obama on the first two, even if he can get through the rest of his term without calling the police “stupid” on national television.

Another thing black men are vulnerable to is unemployment. The black male unemployment rate runs about 5% higher than the national average. According to this report, it stood at 15.4% as of June. Some of this high unemployment rate seems likely to come from the high concentration of black workers in urban areas, which tend to be hit hard by recessions. Another factor could be the relatively low median age of black males, which is about six years younger than the national average – putting a high number of black workers in the sort of entry-level jobs that evaporate most quickly in a recessionary climate. The political party that enjoys over 90% support from black voters is currently pushing a cap-and-trade energy bill that would cause a recession lasting decades. I would suggest that black men who wish to improve their economic fortunes consider a change of voting habits.

A major factor in high black unemployment rates is their high vulnerability to receiving horrible educations from the public school system. The greatest obstacle faced by black parents who want to secure a better education for their children is Barack Hussein Obama, who wasted no time killing a successful school voucher program in Washington D.C. The Democrat Party stands ready to fight school choice to the death, thanks to the dominant influence of the teachers’ unions. Perhaps some concerned black voters will catch a Democrat some day, while he’s picking up his children from their expensive private school, and ask him what it would take to get him to stop blocking school choice for his loyal constituents.

One other thing black men are vulnerable to is racism. White racism, the obsession with white racism, and black racism are all toxins that can damage their chances for success. Blacks are not well-served by the sort of racial paranoia stoked by the Gates incident, or Obama’s high-profile reaction to it. They are also injured by serious white racism, of course. There is only one tonic that can reliably dispel every form of racial hatred, without injuring the liberty of any citizen, of any race: commerce. The first steps in achieving black equality may have been necessarily political, but the last dregs of racism can only be drained away by men and women united in common effort for mutual gain. Irrational hatred can never survive familiarity…. it lives only in the abstract, in the darker halls of the mind, where it can feed on illusions and memories. Every day in America, someone begins working side-by-side with a partner of the “wrong” color, and forgets how to hate him.

Commerce cannot completely purify the human heart… but it doesn’t have to. The heart only needs to be softened a bit, just enough to let people offer each other a chance for success, or have the wisdom to accept the offer. In the unity of our quest for prosperity, we learn how wasteful violence and ignorance are. No government program or draconian law can ever duplicate the cleansing power of the bond that forms between two people, when one of them needs something built, and the other one has a hammer. No decent person of any color would sacrifice the welfare of his family to indulge foolish hatreds.

Black men are vulnerable to a politics of government control and withered liberty, whose final insult is that it destroys the economic vigor that has the power to make racism irrelevant. Based on what we have learned about the background of Police Sergeant James Crowley, who has taught classes in how to avoid racial profiling, and fought to save dying black basketball star Reggie Lewis from his fatal heart attack in 1993, it seems he could teach this lesson to Professor Henry Gates… if the professor had the wisdom and humility to listen.

I wish there was a phrase with which one could preface a statement such as yours that would protect you from the label of “racist” for making it.

Truth sometimes comes off a little harsh. That’s why I tend to listen closely when people deliver hard truths.

Frankly I’m a little giddy right now because I really like where you coming from. At some point more black Americans will see the left’s obsession with race is not born of benevolence.

Several weeks prior to the Tookie Williams execution, local radio shows opened up their call lines to people in the black community for hours at a time.

I wish people could have heard their anger and anguish as they described how much they were and are victimized by the gangs. Rapes, robberies, assaults, burglaries, murders — there was no love for Tookie. They wanted him executed.

Doc,

You left out one of the main causes of black unemployment that is conveniently supported by the Democrats; illegal immigration. All those entry level jobs held down by illegals are positions that young black men can’t access.

But, I’m sure Professor Gates covers that in his Black Studies curriculum sarc/off.

walkingboss on July 24, 2009 at 5:54 PM

It’s not just entry level jobs, but there were many jobs that were characteristically held by black men in Southern California. The flood of illegal labor drove the wages down until they became the infamous “jobs Americans wouldn’t do.” These are jobs such as dry wall and construction.

Yup, and add to that our new minimum wage and *POOF* there goes a few more thousand black employees. But that’s ok, the govt will give them all make-work jobs just to keep them on the federal payrolls.

That wouldn’t be an issue were it not for minimum wage laws and unions. Workers do not create unemployment, laws do.
That said, I am still a boarder hawk just on the basis of lawfulness and national integrity.

Democrats are all about identifying ‘victim groups’ then promising them that the Democrats will make their lot in life better. How long has “The War on Poverty” been going on? But you have to hand it to the Democrats, the ‘victims’ still support them. Public education has done it’s job.

GarandFan on July 24, 2009 at 7:30 PM

I fear that Professor Gates has his own agenda that he is more interested in promoting and I very suspect of his humility. Arrogance is an ugly thing no matter the race.

Funny that a man of such a learned background can act so classless toward the very person there to protect and serve his property and his life.

This smug arrogance demonstrated by this Harvard Prof. attitude “don’t you know who I am?” breeds contemptible class racism. He, the prof. is wrong.

He should apologize and thank the Officer. But no, this clown can’t see past the glasses on his fat nose. Even as he’s being led away in cuffs, you can see mouth spewing racist rage.

No vouchers No school choice. National standards to be set by the NEA and their unionized teachers? If so, it will just be liberal propaganda taught as fact and experimenting with our children with programs like new math and look and say that replaced proven programs like phonics and rote learning of the math tables before continuing on to all the more complicated math. Charter schools staffed by NEA teachers. The whole program is just another way to funnel money to the unions as a reward for voting for Nobama. I’ll bet that the linkage gets omitted from the final program because the unions don’t want it. Anyone want to bet that linkage is a strong part of the final product?

Blacks who harp on about racism, or who hustle race for votes, or who get preference for jobs because of their minority status regardless of whether they are qualified for it or not, or who demand reparations and special treatment because of slavery which white men died to put an end to 144 years ago, are in danger of actually creating racism by their incessant accusations of it where it didn’t exist before.

Great post Doc!

Racism thives in the Black community, their church, and the Black leaders like Sharpton, Jesse, and the Congressional Black Caucus. Everything these leaders do, they make it about race. They refuse to let go of the past; which was horrific for black people, but it is the past.

If I had leaders like Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, & Gates, and my preacher, grandparents, parents, telling me from the time I was born that “white people are racist”, “the government invented Aids to kill us”, “our schools are inferior to white schools”…I would be racist also.

It is a sad day when our president joins the chorus of voices that perpetuate race; sad for us all! I am proud of the police sgt. the FOP, and the police unions for taking a stand against race. Good for them!!

He didn’t say “the greatest obstacle faced by black parents”, he said “the greatest obstacle faced by black parents who want to secure a better education for their children”. A small stretch, perhaps, but not a “ridiculous” one like your trolled-up strawman argument.

Knott Buyinit on July 24, 2009 at 10:12 PM

If you could pick one single item, just one thing that would improve the lives of black people in the United States, what would it be? Frederick Douglass, in the late 1800′s knew what black people, at that time needed, education. It was true then and it’s true now. What did Bill Cosby talk about, during his speech to the NAACP, education and how black people weren’t holding up their end of the bargain.

Still, we have black people voting in huge numbers for a political party that has done nothing, in the past 50 plus years, to improve their lot in life. They’ve given them “stuff” but they haven’t given them the tools to improve their lot in life all by themselves. Perhaps it’s because the Democrats know that, once black people have the independence education provides, they might not vote for them in such large numbers.

Alas, it doesn’t look like this is going to change any time soon.

bflat879 on July 24, 2009 at 10:18 PM

John Fund is showing by polls that blacks in VA and NJ are starting to rethink the Democratic loyalty. The owner of BET is apparently supporting a Republican gubernatorial candidate in VA based on fiscal responsibility. In NJ the issue is school vouchers which the Democrat candidate, in deference to the teachers union, opposes while the Republican endorses vouchers. Nothing will help raise the employment rate of young blacks more than school vouchers. When will they revolt against the Dems and insist on policies that really help them rather than keep them subsisting?
