The Vulnerability of Black Men In America
posted at 2:13 pm on July 24, 2009 by Doctor Zero
On the subject of his now-infamous arrest, Henry Gates said, “This isn’t about me; this is about the vulnerability of black men in America.” We are saddled with entirely too many arrogant people who think of themselves as icons, their lives needing only a sprinkle of controversy and media attention to blossom into historical moments. If this incident turns out to be “about” anything more than a rude man being treated rudely by a cop, it would be about the lack of responsibility and humility in our floundering President. Maybe the President’s unseemly haste to turn a legal matter he admitted to knowing nothing about into a major racial incident, along with an offhanded insult to the intelligence of police officers, will turn into a “teachable moment” for black voters, and make them less vulnerable to voting for shadowy con artists because of their skin color.
One thing black men are definitely vulnerable to is violent crime. Blacks represent about 14% of the general population, but they make up nearly half of murder victims. For decades, they have been thirty to forty percent more likely to suffer from violent crime than the general population. You will notice that white liberals are much more enthusiastic about springing black criminals from their “disproportionate levels of incarceration” than the law-abiding black citizens who must deal with them, once they’ve ditched their orange jumpsuits. The best things society could do to help innocent black men avoid being robbed and murdered are providing enhanced access to lawful, registered firearms for self-defense, more aggressive prosecution of the criminal element, and more police protection. Professor Gates is not doing black men any favors on the latter count, and I doubt they can expect much help from President Obama on the first two, even if he can get through the rest of his term without calling the police “stupid” on national television.
Another thing black men are vulnerable to is unemployment. The black male unemployment rate runs about 5% higher than the national average. According to this report, it stood at 15.4% as of June. Some of this high unemployment rate seems likely to come from the high concentration of black workers in urban areas, which tend to be hit hard by recessions. Another factor could be the relatively low median age of black males, which is about six years younger than the national average – putting a high number of black workers in the sort of entry-level jobs that evaporate most quickly in a recessionary climate. The political party that enjoys over 90% support from black voters is currently pushing a cap-and-trade energy bill that would cause a recession lasting decades. I would suggest that black men who wish to improve their economic fortunes consider a change of voting habits.
A major factor in high black unemployment rates is their high vulnerability to receiving horrible educations from the public school system. The greatest obstacle faced by black parents who want to secure a better education for their children is Barack Hussein Obama, who wasted no time killing a successful school voucher program in Washington D.C. The Democrat Party stands ready to fight school choice to the death, thanks to the dominant influence of the teachers’ unions. Perhaps some concerned black voters will catch a Democrat some day, while he’s picking up his children from their expensive private school, and ask him what it would take to get him to stop blocking school choice for his loyal constituents.
One other thing black men are vulnerable to is racism. White racism, the obsession with white racism, and black racism are all toxins that can damage their chances for success. Blacks are not well-served by the sort of racial paranoia stoked by the Gates incident, or Obama’s high-profile reaction to it. They are also injured by serious white racism, of course. There is only one tonic that can reliably dispel every form of racial hatred, without injuring the liberty of any citizen, of any race: commerce. The first steps in achieving black equality may have been necessarily political, but the last dregs of racism can only be drained away by men and women united in common effort for mutual gain. Irrational hatred can never survive familiarity…. it lives only in the abstract, in the darker halls of the mind, where it can feed on illusions and memories. Every day in America, someone begins working side-by-side with a partner of the “wrong” color, and forgets how to hate him.
Commerce cannot completely purify the human heart… but it doesn’t have to. The heart only needs to be softened a bit, just enough to let people offer each other a chance for success, or have the wisdom to accept the offer. In the unity of our quest for prosperity, we learn how wasteful violence and ignorance are. No government program or draconian law can ever duplicate the cleansing power of the bond that forms between two people, when one of them needs something built, and the other one has a hammer. No decent person of any color would sacrifice the welfare of his family to indulge foolish hatreds.
Black men are vulnerable to a politics of government control and withered liberty, whose final insult is that it destroys the economic vigor that has the power to make racism irrelevant. Based on what we have learned about the background of Police Sergeant James Crowley, who has taught classes in how to avoid racial profiling, and fought to save dying black basketball star Reggie Lewis from his fatal heart attack in 1993, it seems he could teach this lesson to Professor Henry Gates… if the professor had the wisdom and humility to listen.

It is entirely impossible to speak to anyone who is looking for a reason to be offended without offending them.
It is possible to show the truths of just how much the Democratic party has “helped” members of the black community over the years. It just has to be done over and over, despite all the cries of racism, and the claims that white people (especially Republicans) can’t be involved in the discussion.
If people point out to black voters that they have been manipulated over the years by Dems and even their own black leaders, it doesn’t imply that they are sheep. If they take it that way, and instantly are offended, then to hell with them. Let them live out the rest of their miserables lives as victims, and let’s try to get their kids a decent education. This applies to everyone though, regardless of race. Especially in this new era of class warfare.
reaganaut on July 24, 2009 at 11:14 PM
Or you could just assume that blacks make rational political choices because they are rational people…just like us white folks! That’d be a good starting point.
Then from there maybe you could try and sell “conservative” policies like school choice etc.
I just don’t see why every appeal to blacks has to begin with “you have been tricked by those evil evil Dems”. It’s an insulting and patronizing way to court potential voters, and it casts a shadow over any otherwise promising policy ideas you might propose.
crr6 on July 24, 2009 at 11:22 PM
That’s a great idea. Commerce has never been used to subjugate races, especially blacks.
crr6 on July 24, 2009 at 11:28 PM
it’s laughable either way.
sesquipedalian on July 24, 2009 at 11:31 PM
What do you care? You’re not black nor are you the designated protector of blacks.
baldilocks on July 24, 2009 at 11:38 PM
So any tool or concept that has been misused can never be used again, right?
baldilocks on July 24, 2009 at 11:39 PM
I know for a fact that many don’t.
That particular concept doesn’t need selling. But should you know that already since you claim to know so much about black people?
Probably because we have.
Insulting to you new slavemasters, yes. Get over it.
baldilocks on July 24, 2009 at 11:42 PM
Wow! How many? Dozens I’m sure.
Looks like we did find the designated spokeswoman for all black people in this thread. Amazing.
What have conservatives done lately to help blacks? Apparently your ideas consist of
a) insulting them
b) refusing to sell policies which may be helpful to them.
Good luck with that.
I believe that you have developed your political views through rational thought. Until you can extend liberal blacks the same courtesy don’t expect anyone to take you seriously.
crr6 on July 24, 2009 at 11:53 PM
Maybe because my grandfather organized the desegregation of schools in a major Northeastern city and my great grandparents were active in the civil rights movement. Maybe because I attended an inner-city school myself, and became extremely sympathetic too and involved in the struggles that contemporary black Americans face.
Sorry that doesn’t jibe with your “limousine liberal” stereotype.
crr6 on July 24, 2009 at 11:57 PM
I guess my grandparents and great-grandparents were “new slavemasters” as well or something. If only them and their black friends could be as brilliant as baldilocks, and see past all of the smoke and mirrors. She’s such a genius.

The 35,000 white women who were raped last year by black men would say they were “venerable” to black men, with Zero black women being raped by Whites.
They hunt whites, Doctor Zero, calling whites “food” and teaching us new words like “Driveby” and “Gat” and “Gangsta” while whites move away. They machine gun homes and kill like whites have never seen, making the Valentines day massacre look like a day in the park. Black gangs inhabit every large city; and where are the equivalent “White gangs”? Whites give more and more money trying to teach students who genetic I.Q. is 80 and will forever be so and you say blacks are “venerable” to a poor education? Blacks commit 80 to 90 percent of the interracial crime and are in prison not because they are venerable, but because they put themselves there.
My God, Where have you been?
GunRunner on July 25, 2009 at 12:45 AM
Compared to you, everybody is a genius. You and GunRunner should get together. You have a lot in common.
Blake on July 25, 2009 at 1:34 AM
They can thank Ted Kennedy for that. His Immigration Act of 1965 opened the floodgates and Hispanics starting taking the entry level jobs many young black men and women would have worked to pull themselves out of poverty.
His actions kept them there.
atheling on July 25, 2009 at 2:14 AM
They’re not the only ones who are easily manipulated.
atheling on July 25, 2009 at 2:19 AM
95% of them voted for Obama, and you’re claiming it wasn’t race-based?
OhioCoastie on July 25, 2009 at 4:06 AM
The one saving grace about the 50% black dropout rate in Chicago public schools is that 50% won’t finish their “indoctrination” as permanent victims of society. Another job half-done by the teacher’s unions at a full-time price.
Obama’s “stimulus” program has shown results here in south Georgia too: the local library had Federal money to hire three new employees. They did, and two lasted less than two months. One complained that stacking books gave her a headache and quit, and all three had problems with English AND mathematics, since they couldn’t figure out how to alphabetically stack books or read the titles. All were high school graduates. The library had to revise it’s hiring specifications to include comprehension of the alphabet and being able to count to 100 or higher.

I agree with almost every word of this sentence. Almost because one word does not belong here.
Registered.
Registration confers upon those who perform the registration (government) the ability to deny permission and has the added danger that it immediately identifies who has the item that is registered.
An example of this in action is the registration of firearms by the German government in 1935. It told the ruling party (Nazis) who had access to weapons and allowed them to deny access (to Jews). It did nothing to reduce crime and was, in fact, used to perpetrate one of the world’s greatest crimes against humanity.
Men and women no matter what their color should have free market access to firearms of whatever size and shape they so desire. Magazine capacity, caliber, number of shots fired with a single pull of the trigger should be decided by the market forces, not by the people grasping for ever more power (government).
Laws regarding registration are several times more likely to be used by power-hungry bureaucrats to take the liberty, property, income and life from the in-offensive members of society than they are to punish those who choose to hurt other people.
Hyunchback on July 25, 2009 at 6:56 AM
The problem was less commerce than government.
DrMagnolias on July 25, 2009 at 8:21 AM
Lemme guess, you live in one of those Marxist states where registration is required? Confiscation of some or all firearms always follows registration. No registration.

The biggest victimizer of black men is not racism, it’s their own thug culture.
Stop rejecting education as uncool. Stop calling smart black men Uncle Tom. Stop glamorizing thievery, murder and all things ghetto. Stop spending every last nickel on status items such as designer clothes, ridiculous car audio setups and fancy wheels that spin around. Stop speaking like your from another country, use proper English. Invest in yourself. Save for your future. Show respect to strangers unless they disrespect you first. Act like an ambassador of your community.
Here’s a perfect illustration of what’s wrong:

It’s also pretty damn funny.
Woody on July 25, 2009 at 9:43 AM
Interesting post. The problem in black America is best exemplified by Obama and Gates. Racism has become a knee jerk reaction, no one bothers to examine it anymore. Sometimes people may be jerks, not racists.
You pointed out fundamental flaws in voting behavior, but that doesn’t matter. The narrative is: “evil white people = Republicans”, “good black/white/hispanic/asian people = Democrats” and “race trumps the political”. It’s always been there and all of those are knee jerk emotional responses. I don’t think it’s going to matter what any one person says, this has always been the useful and exploited narrative. I was hoping Steele could make some ground, but as long as he is opposed to Obama, ie Obama’s viewpoints and policies, (it’s all the same thing) then he’s just a race traitor, a stupid Republican, Uncle Tom. The best Steele could do is convert a couple of people, but most of black America will always follow the narrative.

I have no problem with legal immigration. This country is large enough to absorb them all.
I was referring to illegal immigration – which I do have a problem with.

Except socialism, Miss B. That, we must try again and again and again. THIS TIME, IT’LL WORK! NO, REALLY!

85 to 90% vote democrat anyway…

They’re NOT just the victim most violent crime done to black people is BY BLACK PEOPLE!!!!
Jeff from WI on July 25, 2009 at 8:43 PM
I’ll explain it to you very slowly, so you will understand:
1. The public education system has catastrophically failed all Americans, but it has been especially bad for black students.
2. The only way to reform the education system is to allow school choice.
3. No school choice movement can succeed if the President is unalterably opposed to it. Nothing else school-choice advocates do will make any great difference, on a national scale, while a faithful minion and ideological soulmate of the education establishment sits in the White House. Obama wasted no time proving himself an especially aggressive foe of school choice.
4. Therefore, President Obama is the greatest obstacle faced by black parents who want to secure a better education for their children.
Yeah, the parents victimized by Obama killing the D.C. school choice program were laughing their heads off.
Doctor Zero on July 26, 2009 at 7:53 AM
Or you could just assume that blacks make rational political choices because they are rational people…just like us white folks! That’d be a good starting point.
85% to 95% support for a political party, stretched over decades, is not a voting pattern, it’s a pathology. The results of that pathology have been damaging to all Americans, not just black voters. As a fellow American, I intend to continue showing black voters the honor of speaking to them honestly. There are plenty of other places they can go to be pandered to.
But maybe you’re right, maybe black voters can finally secure a decent future by voting the way they have been for forty years. How many more elections where they give 90% support to the Democrats who have failed them so terribly do you think it will take? Will twenty more years be enough time for the hidden genius of those statist Democrat policies to kick in? Obviously $24 trillion in spending isn’t enough for Obama to provide government-guaranteed prosperity for all – will another trillion do the trick? Will this coming semester be the year public education miraculously reforms itself? Or maybe if the last few percent of blacks who refuse to fall in line and vote Democrat see the error of their ways, it will give the Democrats that last drop of courage they needed to support school choice, over the united and violent opposition of the teachers’ unions.
Whatever the reasons for black voters’ monolithic support for liberals in the past, they can change their ways in the very next election, if they choose to do so. It would benefit all Americans if they did. I don’t think anything shatters illusions better than straight talk, so I’ll do my part to prove Eric Holder’s contention that we are a “nation of cowards” when it comes to openly discussing issues of race.
Doctor Zero on July 26, 2009 at 8:08 AM
I’m all in favor of increasing the access to lawful firearms, particularly in the areas hardest-hit by the combination of draconian gun laws and violent crime. However, there will inevitably be crimes committed with guns, and the forensic advantages of gun registration are an important tool of law enforcement.
I would put it this way: if the government obeys the Second Amendment correctly, the licensing and registration of guns is a big problem for criminals, but no problem at all for the law-abiding gun owner. (Of course, criminals can work around registration. Make them work for it.) Conversely, if the government uses registration to confiscate lawful firearms, registration itself is not the most serious problem with the government.
Doctor Zero on July 26, 2009 at 8:16 AM
how do you know? school choice only helps those students whose parents are already involved in their kids’ education. it’s nice to focus on schools that perform well, but it’s even more important not to ignore those that are left behind in the school choice process. those kids need the most help, and they’re the one who don’t get it from their parents.

Wrong. Both can create unemployment under the right conditions. Especially if the ‘workers’ are wetbacks willing to work for peanuts in the worst conditions, and who don’t dare complain. It’s a win-win-win for the unscrupulous employer.
