The real FAIL of the Obama presser

posted at 10:50 am on July 23, 2009 by

Pres. Obama’s fourth prime-time news conference (and fifth overall) was truly craptastic. I am no Obama fan, but when Larry Sabato, Howard Fineman and assorted mopes at MSNBC are unenthused, it’s safe to say it was craptastic.

NBC and ABC, Howard Kurtz, The Hill, and Ed Morrissey were among the many to note that Pres. Obama held a news conference without making news.

This left the president filibustering on every answer, and every answer followed the same general pattern. Pres. Obama tended to begin with a non-answer — boilerplate talking points about the healthcare issue. Even the Associated Press is fact-checking his pablum now. And public support ofr healthcare reform has been eroding while he has been making them these past weeks. Once some bit of boilerplate was spit out, the president would grope toward some sort of answer responsive to the question, but end up saying something unhelpful to his own cause, most notably his accusation that greedy doctors want to remove your tonsils.

I generally predicted this is how the presser would go, absent the tonsil comedy. But the presser played out even worse than I thought it would and had to ask myself why.

Yesterday, Rich Lowry suggested that the problem with Obama going into campaign mode was that his words would inevitably clash with the sausage getting made on Capitol Hill, ultimately eroding Obama’s credibility. I agreed with that — and still do. But the reality of Obama’s presser points toward a bigger problem for the president.

Pres. Obama’s real failure is embodied in the very first question of the presser:

Q Congress, as you alluded to, is trying to figure out how to pay for all of this reform. Have you told House and Senate leaders which of their ideas are acceptable to you? If so, are you willing to share that stand of yours with the American people? And if you haven’t given that kind of direction to congressional leaders, are you willing to — are you willing to explain why you’re not stepping in to get a deal done, since you’re the one setting a deadline?

Pres. Obama’s rambling non-answer to this question, which went on for minute after agonizing minute, speaks volumes. Political junkies know why Obama does not have an answer to this question. Obama never offered much in the way of a detailed healthcare proposal, because the White House decided that offering an actual draft bill was one of the things that sunk the Clintons’ attempt to take over our healthcare in 1993-94. It is also an approach reinforced by Obama’s career, in which he has been greatly rewarded for frequently voting “present.”

However, what the non-answer conveys to the casual viewer is a lack of leadership. It paints a portrait of a man banging the podium, telling Congress to act, while offering little to nothing himself. It is the picture of someone who talks about the “fierce urgency of now,” but only talks about it.

This is the real problem behind the criticism that Obama did not make any news last night. With healthcare reform hitting obstacles in Congress, the expectation was that Obama would say or do something to advance the ball down the field, but it did not happen. Pres. Obama was in campaign mode, but it was still the campaign of a candidate who wants the job — describing the problem, while avoiding the tough realities of a solution. Pres. Obama now has the job, and looks like he isn’t doing it.

I find it truly frightening that the man cannot even manage a successful press conference.

No, I don’t want him to lead this stupid effort well, but I’m just not comfortable with the entire world seeing the big blinking “Idiot” sign above his head.

Voting present, acting non-threatening and never challenging his party’s special interest groups is what made Obama viable as a presidential candidate in the first place. The problem is you can’t govern like that, because every special interest group will roll you in order to get their pet project(s) into the Cause of the Moment. Bill Clinton realized after 1994 he’d have to say no to some of the people on his side or be thrown out of office in 1996. We’ll see if Obama learns the same lesson and/or if there’s a Dick Morris around the White House this time to tell him that.

The REASON he can’t come out with anything is that IT IS AN ABORTION! It is so shockingly radical that he can’t speak about the specifics. His job is to use his juice to ram things through, then he can blame congress later. If he gets too personal with the horrible issues in this bill, he’ll be crucified with no one else to pin the blame on. See for yourself.

If health care reform is the signature issue of the Obama Administration then so far the administration has failed in its signature issue; yet another Obama failure to add to Stimulus, Iran, and North Korea failures. Matter of fact, the only success this administration has experienced is… wait for it… fighting piracy off the Somalian Coast! So now health care reform is sidetracked, along with Cap & Trade, until after August break… great news for the nation.

Apparently Axelrod thinks Obama needs to stay OUT of the “sausage-making” and somehow float above the grubby reality of policymaking. But when the Democrats’ own caucus starts to fall apart, the only thing that can pull it together is some White House muscle, and also some use of the President’s own political capital. He HAS to lay out some bottom lines of what he will and will not sign.

Hmmm…that makes me wonder: Are there any provisions within the US Constitution that might allow us, the American public, any legal, constitutionally-sanctioned means to rectify this situation sooner rather than having to wait 3+ years until 2012?

Just curious. Any constitutional experts out there?

It’s appalling, but not in the least bit surprising.

I said all the way through the campaign (um, I guess I need to specify that I’m referring here to the pre-election campaign) that someday Barak Obama will need to do more than simply be articulate.

A President can get elected with empty words, but he will eventually have to SAY SOMETHING.

But Barak Obama has no ability to do that. The media are falling out. Not because he’s too Communistic or anti-American, they live for that. But the media can’t keep going forever in a complete vacuum of substance. OK, maybe outlets like Newsweek and Oprah can, but anyone who’s still pretending to be a “real journalist” will eventually need something besides fluff. Obama is slowly asphyxiating his best friends, and they’re eventually going to have to turn on the guy.

Again, it’s appalling that it’s taken this long, but it’s not at all surprising.

logis on July 23, 2009 at 2:53 PM

Agreed completely, Karl. I believe that Obama is smart enough to know he will have to change his style unless he wants a very frustrating term as President. That brings up an ethical dilemma for me: do I want him to stay arrogant and end up a colossal failure, or do I want him to learn to adapt, a la Clinton, and be more successful at mismanaging the country?

jwolf on July 23, 2009 at 2:55 PM

The rather obvious hidden assumption of Obama’s rambling rant about how doctors may just do things to their patients to run up the tab is that capitalism doesn’t serve the public, while socialism does. Deep down in Obama’s radical heart, that’s what he believes, despite all the evidence to the contrary. It doesn’t matter that Soviet health care is atrocious while the world flocks to American hospitals. In Obama’s parallel radical universe reality is wrong.

It is also an approach reinforced by Obama’s career, in which he has been greatly rewarded for frequently voting “present.”

Nailed it. He has not been, and never will be, a LEADER. He gives no input because:

1) He’ll have to justify it
2) He’ll have to watch it be modified
3) He’d have to support it / make trade offs elsewhere

This means PERSONAL involvement. Ain’t gonna happen with The One. He likes to stand off, ALONE, to determine the fate of mere mortals.

GarandFan on July 23, 2009 at 4:26 PM

Obama was lying before he even took the first question. Remember, we were told that he was going to take credit for saving the economy. He did this by claiming that that he “inherited” a 1.3 trillion dollar deficit, and that if they had not passed the stimulus or Omnibus, it would have ballooned to 9.3 trillion in ten years.

Thanks to his and the Dems’ courageous actions,it’s only going to be a mere 7.1 trillion.

Nobody (but me)that I can see, has called b.s. on that.

The CBO in March said that the cumulative deficit AFTER passing those bills would total of 9.3 trillion dollars compared to a baseline cumulative deficit of 4.4 trillion.

So I’m confused. Where’s Obama getting his numbers?

Nice Deb on July 23, 2009 at 4:29 PM

I predict that Obama, after suffering a mental breakdown, will be quietly committed and “The Clintonistas” will assume the throne, thus freeing Big Willy to triangulate away once more.

He “isn’t doing it” because he doesn’t know how. The only time he wasn’t stumbling for words and could speak confidently off the cuff was when he was addressing the Gates Arrest and he even fumbled that!

ronsfi on July 23, 2009 at 4:57 PM

Obama probably lost lots of support when he said he “inherited” a $1.3 trillion deficit. The fiscal 2008 deficit was “only” $480 billion–and probably enough people know the real figure that they tuned him out thereafter.

Then he started talking about extra taxes on high-income people to fund “a third” of his health-care proposal. This is exactly what the Blue Dogs DON’T want, since that concerns mostly small businesses which would lay off people to pay the taxes. Has Obama actually been talking to Congress, or just ordering to get “something” (anything) done before August?
