“what if they mandated government run healthcare and nobody came to work?”

To be fair, he does say:

And that’s part of why you have to have some independent group that can give you guidance. It’s not determinative, but I think has to be able to give you some guidance

So it really comes down to:

… is horrifying.

One troubling provision of the House bill compels seniors to submit to a counseling session every five years (and more often if they become sick or go into a nursing home) about alternatives for end-of-life care (House bill, p. 425-430). The sessions cover highly sensitive matters such as whether to receive antibiotics and “the use of artificially administered nutrition and hydration.”

This mandate invites abuse, and seniors could easily be pushed to refuse care. Do we really want government involved in such deeply personal issues?

Don’t forget the politicians! Congress loves to change Tricare benefits, with mixed success:

Congress last year added new entitlements called TriCare For Life to the TriCare health package with the enactment of the “National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2001.” In April, DoD introduced its TriCare Senior Pharmacy prescription drug benefit and filled 237,000 prescriptions in the first week. In October, TriCare will begin to act as a second payer to medicare for medicare-eligible retirees, their family members and survivors.

Yet, the overall Defense Health Plan (DHP) has been plagued by low-balled funding requests from DoD, under-funding by Congress and the administration, and bureaucratic impediments to cost-saving integration between DoD and Department of Veterans Affairs medical facilities. Rep. McHugh said that DHP officials and TriCare managed care contractors were introducing a “revolutionary” concept to Congress that you actually have to pay for what you promise.

Because health benefits need lots more confusion, don’t they?
