Madison: The city where words don’t mean things

Minor point, but it still bugs me. Honestly, the idea sounds nice. It sounds idyllic. It’s just that the sign bugs me.

Residents will soon have a chance to engage in peaceful reflection when a labyrinth opens July 25 at Carpenter-Ridgeway Neighborhood Park on the city’s East Side.

But it isn’t the kind of labyrinth you get lost in. Rather, as you trace its route you’re encouraged to take an introspective journey.

“A labyrinth is not a maze, it has no dead-ends, it gives no problem to resolve and there is no task to accomplish,” reads a sign to be posted in front of the structure.

Sounds like one of these…

…which is fine. I like the idea. When I watched Ducktales as a kid, I made a promise to myself that I would have one of these in my house.

However, if this truly is a labyrinth, then Madison seems to be ignoring the definition of the word:

lab?y?rinth
??/?læb?r?n?/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [lab-uh-rinth] Show IPA
Use labyrinth in a Sentence
–noun
1. an intricate combination of paths or passages in which it is difficult to find one’s way or to reach the exit.
2. a maze of paths bordered by high hedges, as in a park or garden, for the amusement of those who search for a way out.
3. a complicated or tortuous arrangement, as of streets or buildings.
4. any confusingly intricate state of things or events; a bewildering complex.

I dearly hope people are properly amused. While I love this city, those definitions could apply equally well to it.

Eh… in America (sadly more and more on both sides of the political spectrum) words just don’t mean what they really do. Ya know. Things change. Stop being such a stickler… blah, blah, blah…

BTW, anyone want a Panic Room in their house?

There are “labyrinths” – where the “maze” is only on the floor. No walls, no obstructions to just walking across the labyrinth, but for those following the path it’s real.

There are also multiple-entrance/multiple-exit labrynths.

For Mad-town, neither would be all that surprising.

I wonder how much it would cost you to get a minotaur outfit.

What is a labyrinth?

A labyrinth is a maze that can be used for meditation purposes. But an ancient version was first known as a jail used by a king from the Greek myths. Icarus flew out of a labyrinth before he took his famous fall into the sea.

The sign maker didn’t have access to the news article prior to constructing his sign message. Had he know that “jail” thing he would have changed the definition – or sumthin.
