It Always Has Been About Trig

I waited a whole day before posting about the Sarah Palin resignation. Well, not a whole day, but longer than almost everyone else in the blogosphere. Here’s my take as of this moment in time, subject to change:
I don’t know why Sarah Palin resigned, what her plans are, or whether she has or wants a political future.
I do know why the left hates her so much. And it keeps coming back to Trig.
Yes, some people hate Sarah Palin because she doesn’t have the traditional pedigree, she isn’t one of them, she is too good looking to be taken seriously, etc. And yes, some hate her because they hate her religion, politics, blah blah blah. But that doesn’t explain the Sarah Palin hatred. It is so deep as to be pathological.
But it keeps coming back to Trig.
From the moment Palin was nominated for V.P., the attacks on Trig began. First there were the rumors, spread by Andrew Sullivan and others, that Sarah Palin was not Trig’s mother, that there was a grand conspiracy of hundreds if not thousands of people to cover up that Bristol Palin was Trig’s real mother. Those Trig truther conspiracy theories have been pushed hard by Sullivan and the others continuously to this day.
Then there were the attacks on Palin for bringing Trig on stage at the Republican National Convention, and with her on the campaign trail. HuffPo blogger Suzy Shuster wrote after Palin brought Trig to the V.P. debate in early October 2008:
It actually came after the debate, when for seemingly the millionth time, Sarah Palin trotted out her piece de resistance, her favorite prop of this campaign season: her five and a half month old son Trig. Why is this child up so late every time there is a camera op? … My point is, if Palin is going to keep shoving the motherhood card down our collective throats, maybe she can start being a mom again and stop using her own kid for political gain. Trig deserves a good night sleep.”
And this post from a self-proclaimed feminist:
In addition to keeping Trig up all hours of the night so that she can parade him around a stage after a pitiful debate performance or speech, she’s decided to use baby Trig to get some lusty applause out of the audience, because, let’s face it, there’s nothing evangelical Christians love more than a developmentally disabled baby they can use to their own end.
The accusation that Trip is used as a “prop” has continued to this day. Megan Elaine at Political Inaction, who accuses Palin of “pimping” Trig in the most recent issue of Runner’s World:
it’s amazing that Palin is, once again, using Trig as a prop. I mean–is it really necessary to have the baby in a picture with her for Runner’s World?? Again, we see her willing to pimp out her children, until one of them gets knocked up. Amazing.
And the personal attacks on Trig for having Down Syndrome have gone far beyond anything I have ever seen, even in politics. My post, Wonkette Goes After Trig Palin Again, has some of the details on the people who fancy themselves intellectuals, and use that intellect to spend their days mocking Trig and creating doctored images of him.
Palin’s resignation speech brought out more of the Trig mockers. HuffPo blogger Erik Sean Nelson penned his now-famous (and deleted) post arguing that Sarah Palin’s political comeback would be pinned to the need for more “retards.” Nelson was far from alone. Witness this post at Paliban Daily:
That’s right. Palin is about to embark on a career of causing babies to be born retarded. Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, crack addiction, or a good old-fashioned kick to the pregnant tummy, it doesn’t matter to Palin. She wants the world to have more Trigs.
Other than fueling a greater need for social services, think how this could benefit Palin politically. She already tests well with the Retarded demographic, and also the Retarded Sympathizer demographic.
Imagine the world Palin is trying to create, in which instead of a superior race, Palin breeds a stupider race. 20 years from now, she’ll only be in her late 60s. She’ll be able to run for President on the Retard ticket . . . no doubt with full support of Retardeds, Retarded Sympathizers, and the Politically-Correct.
Next time around, when Palin is told “Your platform is completely retarded”, she will be able to say, “You betcha! That’s just what my constituents want!”
At Wordsmoker the intellect in charge posted: “To be honest, it’s hard to decipher what she’s on about, or on, so the most pressing question is this — did Trig Palin write this speech for her?”
I could go on and on. The internet is full of Trig Palin conspiracy theories, name-calling and Photoshopping. No matter what month, event, or excuse, Palin haters find a reason to attack Trig.
If Sarah Palin had aborted Trig, the left would have been okay with it. If she hid Trig offstage and out of sight, all would be good. But treat the child as you would any other child, and that cannot be tolerated.
There is something about a Down syndrome child in plain view which has exposed the moral and emotional bankruptcy of the left-wing of the Democratic party. And they hate Sarah Palin because deep down, they hate themselves for being who they are.

Heartbreaking, but true. I also feel that Palin’s decision is really about her family. I’m not sure she wouldn’t have quit her job at this point, even if she had never been a national candidate or the subject of so much hate from the Left. Trig is getting older, Todd still works away from home a lot of the time, and Sarah needs to be with him more.
rockmom on July 4, 2009 at 10:01 AM
Trig is beautiful and deserves a full and loving life. Liberals are so selfish they cannot fathom a foreign term called “sacrifice”.
They understand sacrificing their offspring’s lives (abortion) for their own convenience, but to sacrifice their precious time or lives for the upbringing of a special needs child makes them horrified. They are enlightened and enlightened people don’t care for imperfect babies.
That Palin may actually consider Trig’s needs before her own makes them confused and when libs are confused they get meaner than hell.
Ris4victory on July 4, 2009 at 10:25 AM
This is just absolutely true. Every time little Trig is seen he is a tangible rebuke to the Left.

Oh, and I think rockmom and Ris4victory make excellent points.

I dunno. I think the Left would’ve found something to criticize–IF she didn’t show her kids with her, then she’s an ambitious woman (you see, an “ambitious” woman is bad, but ambitious man is good), IF she did bring out the kids during the campaign or in the Runner’s World article, these would be photo ops or token appearances to show that she’s a “good” mom (however one defines “good mom,” because only leftie women can be “ambitious” and be career woman, right?), IF …….. ad nauseum….
The point is the Left cannot help themselves. She embodies everything they can’t stand (her pro-life positions, happy marriage to one person), oppose (Her conservatism), despise (her lack of educational pedigree, small town/rural affinities) and wish they had (her knock-out looks and cheerfulness).
Unfortunately, so true.

I disagree that the left would have been okay with it, but in a different context than their delusion that abortion for any and all is cool. Had she aborted, the left surely would have swung back using the other edge of their argument sword. “Look, look, she is a poor conservative!” they would declare. The dislike for Palin by the left is, as you state – pathological – in the sense that it is abnormally and excessively embraced.
In my opinion, what the libs hate most about her is that she is a powerful woman with FIVE children that has it all together in such a beautiful way you can share in it when you watch the family. Palin deniers simply find it handy to point to Trig.

P.S. Great post.
It’s depressing that people would write these things about someone, a baby no less, who is not “normal” and also criticize someone who chooses to defend and nurture that person. Sad.
conservative pilgrim on July 4, 2009 at 11:07 AM
Yes, she would’ve been branded a hypocrite.
conservative pilgrim on July 4, 2009 at 11:09 AM
Exposes their hollow repository toward the meaning of life itself. This seems to be a shallowness of thought about it doesn’t it? These same people I could safely presume would scream in agony if a healthy three legged canine was to put down or at a minimum treated the way Trig has been. Why can’t they at least see the false dichotomy of a human life vs. any-life. But once again, there is one thing that we can be certain about: Life is expressed in many ways, yet it is how you actually lead your life that truly makes all the difference in this world of ours.
Americannodash on July 4, 2009 at 11:39 AM
Sort of ironic that the left hates Trig but gushes over actors with downs syndrome. Well, more like they’re a bunch of hypocrites.

If the Palin’s had aborted their precious child, nobody would have needed to know. We have pretty serious laws about medical records these days. But we do absolutely know that she made a decision to keep him and incorporate him into the family and for the left that is intolerable.
The palin hater I am most familiar with on a personal level is a forty something “young person” (her words not mine), who is unmarried and childless. She talks about the blessings of abortion all the time. I don’t know if it is from personal experience and I don’t care, but to women like these, Sarah Palin is someone to be despised. She not only has the children they shunned and avoided or even aborted, but she also kept the type of baby that made their argument somewhat palatable for a few of their allies. The cry was that people should not be “forced” to keep babies that would overwhelm the parents and take away resources and time from “normal” children.
And here comes trig Palin! The parents seem pleased with their son and the other siblings love him, carry him and smooth his hair! He demolishes their argument every time he appeared loved and unburdensome on the campaign trail. Trig was cared for and Sarah still did her job and looked beautiful and happy. She was not the bitter burned-out mama-slave to an imperfect child that their model predicted she must be. With every kiss on Trig’s little forehead she made them look foolish.
If Palin needed to be punished for anything, she needed to be punished for undermining a key argument of the pro-abortion crowd.
And I also expect that the women who remained childless by choice and who aborted the Trigs, the Willows, and the Pipers have their moments of deepest remorse. And Sarah said with every smile “look, it can work”.
Of course it came down to Trig, but to the other children too. Trig was merely the most stunning and damning example.

Sacrifice is a concept that neither liberals or “country-club conservatives” understand. It’s something that the lesser classes should do at the direction of their intellectual betters, don’t you know?
“Good for thee, but not for me.”
trfogey on July 4, 2009 at 5:59 PM
The fact that the Palins do not appear to be “sacrificing” is the reason why they are despised. The liberal equation says they should be bitter and that Sarah cannot be succesful, and there she was on a Presidential ticket!
clnurnberg on July 4, 2009 at 6:05 PM
And now the prototype “unmarried childless success”, MoDo is attacking Palin for another decision that the left is incapable of supporting.
If Palin is leaving the job for the sake of the family she must be further condemned, for families must sacrifice for the good of the parent’s job aspirations.
I wonder if MoDo can possibly look at Palin and be happy with her job as vipera in chief at a newspaper?
clnurnberg on July 4, 2009 at 6:09 PM
I hear that story as well. My response is that babies like Trig are born into special families. Families that are selected by the giver of life because that particular family has no boundaries for the love they have to share.
That 40-ish woman you know is a dime-a-dozen in terms of family worth.
ericdijon on July 4, 2009 at 6:25 PM
Brilliant analysis.
And how ironic is it that the very same groups who promote politically-correct lingo like “mentally challenged” or “intellectually disabled” gleefully describe a Down syndrome child as “retarded”.
Buy Danish on July 4, 2009 at 6:36 PM
And she’s a perennial child like so many libs she never cared for the responsibilities of adulthood and the joys they bring. She’s well into middle age masquerading as a slip of a lass. Such pathos!
clnurnberg on July 4, 2009 at 10:01 PM
There is a central deep spirit within people. Some may call it a soul. While there is no one with that spotless spirit, that stainless soul, the attacks on a small child, a healthy one, would be unfathomable, the attacks on a special needs baby, show the true depths of a soul fully stained in pure evil. Those believing in the Bible, the Book of Revelations, may notice the start of a society ruled by demons, where little special needs children are attacked, and young teens can become the fair of public airway rape jokes, without a societal backlash. Each day we march closer to that edge of a country of Satanic worship.

The problem for the leftie pro-abortion crowd is that every time they see a happy Sarah and her husband and her kids along with Trig as part of a loving supportive family it gives lie to their delusions and cuts to their core. It makes them realize how scurilous and morally bankrupt they really are, how selfish and mean spirited, and so they project this mean spiritedness onto the Palin family. It’s a vindictiveness and a hatefulness that only comes out when one’s vitally necessary but untimately self destructive delusions are exposed as false. Sarah and her family expose the left’s need for a phony alternative reality and reveal it to be just that. They have to try and destroy her and her family in order to preserve their fantasies but it won’t work and they know it. They just can’t help themselves.

If only they had reached that level of self-knowledge – alas, that may come with time.
