“The Way We Get By”

Since the first Gulf War in 1991, a group of veterans and townspeople from the area have greeted every troop flight that arrives or departs from Bangor International Airport. They’re so loyal to their mission that the airport set aside a permanent room for them.

I’ve been at the airport a couple of times when troop flights have arrived, and it’s a moving experience. Soldiers file in and the minute they enter the terminal, the troop greeters start applauding, shaking hands and hugging the troops. In the troop greeter room, soldiers are given access to snacks and free cell phones they can use to call loved ones. Although I’ve never been a formal part of the troop greeting, I have taken the opportunity to shake a hand or clap for those who serve our country.

“The Way We Get By” follows the lives of three troop greeters. It’s in limited release now, but at the movie website you can request a screening of the film in your area. The reviews, both from professional reviewers and those I know who have seen the movie, are extremely positive. If you can’t get to a screening, the movie will be shown on Veteran’s Day on public broadcasting.

Plug for the troop greeters: If you’d like to donate to their cause, here’s the link. Your donations pay for the snacks and amenities given to the soldiers. All of the greeters are volunteers.

Thanks for the Great Post Slublog….. It’s too bad there aren’t more of these folks around that show real American pride in our troops.

i remember when my brother came home from Iraq. he flew into lynchburg va. airport (very small). though only family was at gate for him, every family member who had ever been in the military was there. (even WW2 vets).

he came thru the gate, hugged his little daughter & stood very still. we didn’t cheer. we were reverent. i cried. very moving.

We are truly blessed to have these troops that serve and the gracious loving citizens who meet them there for all of us who can’t be there.

God I love this country.

Can’t help but cry when I see these troop home-comings.

Not sure if it’s because I’m so glad to see our soldiers honored and lifted up or because I was shunned by “old friends”, cursed at, and called a baby killer as a Vietnam-Era vet.

Probably a bit of both.

Walking through airports as a solider was not an uplifting experience then.

God bless our soliders and these folks who go out of their way to honor them.

Authentic… Poignant… Perfect.

If the trailer made me cry, I’m going to need a whole box of tissues to get through the entire movie.

So uplifting in the midst of such a dark time.

May I recommend “Taking Chance”? It’s an HBO film, now on DVD, about a Marine colonel who volunteers to escort the body of young hero who gave his life in Iraq. A touching, respectful treatment.

The American people can be so good….why do they vote so stupid?

This reminds me of the book Once Upon a Town …which I *highly* recommend.

A great book to add to your summertime reading list.

Oh my word…I think that is wonderful. I used up a whole tissue just on the clip. I may have to tuck a box into my purse to see the movie. Is there a way to find out if people do this in my area? I would absolutely love to do this for the troops.

If you have a FB page, please post this there so people can see it, and let us help get this movie some real support. And if in the process, we can support these people and take up this wonderful cause, would that not just be great!

Damn, I got misty eyes just watching the trailer. I can only imagine the bawling wreck I’d be when watching the whole movie.

Thank God for these fine men and women. This Americans salutes you all.

Touching.

They’ve got to get a paypal account set up. Donations need to be mailed by check to them. I’ll be sending my 20 bucks out tomorrow. But I would imagine others who may have donated won’t bother with the snail mail (I include myself in the lazy procrastinating population, I’m gonna force myself to follow through).

By the way, here’s the address:

Please mail your check or money order to: Maine Troop Greeters, c/o Cathy Czarnecki, Treasurer, Bangor International Airport, 287 Godfrey Blvd., Box 6, Bangor, ME 04401.
Payable to: Maine Troop Greeters.

I hope to see the movie and take some of my grand kids with me.

Two won’t be able to go with me though.

My oldest grand son is in the Navy and my next oldest is in the Air Force (yet to leave for basic) but he is working a rig and I don’t think he will be in town. But even when he’s off about all he does is sleep.

But you can be sure I will take my other grand kids.

They need to see this movie.
