She also has to learn how to respond to invitations to speak at G.O.P. fund raisers. Effective executives cannot be indecisive and flounder around - especially over really easy things.

You don't think that could be GOP infighting, at least the second invitation was messed up fully by GOP people.

Pretty good article. My one quibble about the charities comment? I see that many others have already addressed it.

I was a big fan of Gov. Palin's long before McCain made the one solid move of his campaign last fall. That admiration has not waned. However, I'm fully aware of her current limitations, i.e. lack of foreign policy experience. Strangely, this didn't seem to be a problem for the current inhabitant of the White House, but I do think that she should really bone up on that subject. Domestic policy? I'm fairly comfortable with a former mayor and current governor of a state full of natural resources running things. Does she need to know everything? Of course not. That's why you hire good people for your cabinet.

Three years ago I predicted to a co-worker that Hillary would be our next president. I ticked off every GOP hopeful and listed why they would not win due their various shortcoming. Whoever the GOP nominated would, I thought, become a sacrificial lamb on the altar of Hillary. While I did not predict the correct Democratic "sort of God", my analysis of the Republican hopefuls was pretty good. Looking ahead to 2012, I see only a couple of possibilities for the GOP to unseat The Won:

1) Gov. Sanford: reliably conservative and likely to shore up the south. No real appeal, maybe, outside of the south.

2) Gov. Pawlenty: again, a solid conservative, but let's be honest: the guy has the personality of a box of Ramen noodles. Also, not a household name outside of political insiders and Minnesotans.

3) Mitt Romney: pretty good fiscal guy, but he has some baggage from his days in Massachusetts and, not that it should matter, the Mormon thing will get hyped until people are convinced that Mormons will try to eat dead babies

4) Gov. Jindal: the activities of a church he belonged to will, shall we say, preclude him from being elected POTUS. Ever. I'm a big fan, but reality is what it is.

5) Gov. Palin: lots of plusses, a few small minuses, which have been convered and one big debit: she was McCain's running mate. The failure of his campaign will be laid at her feet by the press. "How can she win now when she was responsible for McCain's loss?" is all we'll hear.

Frankly, I'm not certain which one of them would be the best candidate to unseat Barry. The media will not take kindly to any apostates trying to unseat their deity. But I would say that Sarah has as good as chance as any of them.

Sarah Palin needs to stick to Conservative principles, period! Smaller government, freedom from government rule, states rights, Pro-Life, Pro-Gun Rights, Pro-Family, Anti-Tax, Anti-Government owned business, Anti-Government run Health Care etc.

If she does all of this, she will be fine. She does NOT need to be micro-managed by well meaning but mis-directed Washington insiders! We the American people "get it" and want a true leader who speaks truth, not political tripe! We have had enough of that for the last two decades!!!

Very good Doctor Zero.
Great ideas and great writing.
Now, wouldn't it be perfect if somehow a new party would emerge to give a fresh alternative to people with true conservative and American values.
I believe this is part of what people respond to in Sarah Palin. She embodies something we haven't seen for a while - the politician that truly wants to work for the public good.

Great advice Doctor Zero.

Personally I think it would be an oncredibly wise move to deliver the "speech of a lifetime" at a Tea Party. We all know she'd be hit by tea-bagging jokes from the media but in their haste to slander her they would also provide her with massive media attention- as as Obama's out of control spending cntinues to hurt the US economy, her message is going to resonate with more and more people.

One other thing I would add- she needs to do more "foreign policy" stuff. What I don't know but her opponents keep hitting her with it as a major weakness. She needs to find some way to try and get on top of that problem. Put John Bolton on the ticket maybe.

And she needs to read Hot Air everyday too!

1.) Sarah Palin has already lost an election against Barack Obama.

McCain lost to Obama you idiot. Since when is a VP responsible for the Loss. Where is it written that once you lose one fight you have to give up. If that were the case we would be British colonies. So since Hillary lost to Obama Hillary can never run again?

2.) Sarah Palin has become a national joke to most Americans, just another trashy figure from a Jerry Springer/Maury talk show (fairly or unfairly)

SNL is not reality.

3.) Sarah Palin is one of the most ignorant politicians in American politics. She thought Africa was a country.

LIAR.

4.) Most importantly, the polls showed that the American people thought that she lost the debate with Biden. Obama would destroy her.

WTF does an old debate have to do with anything on 2012. Are you locked in a time warp. Anyway she didn't lose the debate. Biden made 14 separate lies.

5.) Every poll shows that most Americans already don’t like Sarah Palin. They certainly aren’t going to change their mind as the years move on.

Polls don't change? WOW thats a new one. Lizza why bother to sound so shrill if Governor Palin is so ineffective?

Answer: Because libs fear her. That is why they attack her.

This is all great advice. A couple of corrections first. The paternity wasn't questioned. The maternity was.

Also, she just helped raise over a million bucks for Autism Speaks in New York. Did you miss that? She can't be a full-time fundraiser as a busy sitting governor. I think she's on the right track on that one.

I'm rather torn over whether or not she will seek to remain as Governor for another term. She announced progress on AGIA today, but there is still a LOT of work to be done on that. It's the largest private construction job in history. I think she's put her heart and soul into that project and I think she might decide to try to stay in as Governor for another term and follow through further with that. I'm watching and very curious to see what she will decide.

I'm a big Palin supporter and I read her press releases and listen to as many interviews as I can. I don't think she is itching to run for the Presidency just yet, but we'll see.

FYI, she'll be on the Today show this morning (Friday) with Matt Lauer. I'm curious to hear what she might say about the deal on AGIA.

I hate reporters. They come into camp and pick up their camp rumors and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are. If I killed them all there would be news from Hell before breakfast.

I gotta say - you missed the most obvious piece of advice:
Either learn to organize, or hire someone who knows how to organize.

It seems like a large percentage of her problems with the GOP have come from disorganization.

apollyonbob on June 11, 2009 at 11:46 PM

That is a splendid suggestion. It's alarming to think Palin might have learned how to organize a national campaign by studying the McCain team...

Dear Sarah,

No one ever successfully defended anything. There is only attack and attack and attack some more.

Your aim should be to whip the Democrats, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread you. Make your campaign as severe as possible, and show no symptoms of tiring until the Democrats beg for mercy.

Best regards, William Tecumseh Sherman

Dearest Sarah,

You should either indulge your opponents or utterly destroy them, for if you merely offend them they will take vengeance, but if you injure them greatly they will be too impotent to retaliate, so that any injury done to your opponents ought to be such that vengeance cannot be feared.

Dear Sarah,

Your aim should be to whip the Democrats, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread you. Make your campaign as severe as possible, and show no symptoms of tiring until the Democrats beg for mercy.

Best regards, William Tecumseh Sherman

The suggestion Allahpundit made was for Palin to associate herself with something national and high-profile, perhaps better described as a "cause" than a "charity." I didn't mean to imply that she doesn't do charity work as it is, and apologize if I left that impression. Part of my point is that she doesn't get enough credit for the good things she does.

Strong identification with a single, high-profile cause would be a good way for Palin to keep herself front and center, in a non-political way, until she might be ready to forcefully re-engage with national politics again... and, of course, it would lend valuable star power to a worthy cause. I work for a small local charity, and if Sarah Palin so much as tipped her cap to us at a single public event, we'd be delirious with joy... right after the emergency medical technicians got finished reviving us.

My advise to to Sarah: Disregard all advise -especially most of that given in this post. To suggest that Sarah Palin ‘do something charitable’ is to exhibit a gross and complete lack of knowledge about what she does on a daily basis!

1.) Sarah Palin has already lost an election against Barack Obama.

2.) Sarah Palin has become a national joke to most Americans, just another trashy figure from a Jerry Springer/Maury talk show (fairly or unfairly)

3.) Sarah Palin is one of the most ignorant politicians in American politics. She thought Africa was a country. She couldn’t name a magazine that she had read. She never traveled outside of the U.S. before the campaign and had to apply for a visa for the first time in her life. She is slow-witted. She recycles Reagan’s catchphrases because she isn’t intelligent enough to come with her own.

4.) Most importantly, the polls showed that the American people thought that she lost the debate with Biden. Obama would destroy her.

5.) Every poll shows that most Americans already don’t like Sarah Palin. They certainly aren’t going to change their mind as the years move on.

So, by all means, please, in the name of GOD, nominate her. All it’s going to do is drag down other Republicans on the ticket.

1. I'll assume you were out of the country and missed it, but Sarah Palin didn't lose an election to Barack Obama. A guy named John McCain did. It was a pretty interesting race - sorry you missed it. If you want to make the more accurately stated point that the running mate from a losing ticket can't go on to win the presidency, you might have a point there. Oh, no, wait, you don't Funny story: the guy who ran a losing campaign as James Cox's running mate against Warren G. Harding went on to win the Presidency twelve years later. You might recognize his name: Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Come to think of it, Barack Obama makes a pretty decent stand-in for Harding.

2. Don't look now, but your hopes of that little fantasy ever coming true just disappeared into the swirling void of David Letterman's fading career.

3. Beginning with a lie and ending with a stream of personal invective doesn't make a very compelling argument. Also, I'll take a parroted quote from Reagan over any original thought Barack Obama has had during his entire adult life. Reagan nostalgia ought to be making a big comeback among the electorate when the Obama stagflation kicks in.

4. Let's run that Palin vs. Biden poll after the country gets a couple more years of Crazy Joe's act, shall we?

5. And poll numbers never change, right? I hate to do more damage to your already fragile world-view, but every poll I've seen recently gives Palin approval ratings of 46-49%. There's no polling data to support a contention that "most Americans already don't like Sarah Palin." You're allowed to Google this stuff before you write your comments, you know.

As for who was on Scare Force One: if that information is ever pried from the white-knuckled grip of the Most Transparent Administration Evah, we'll see what effect it has on the public. I think it would be best for Obama if that list never came out.

Some of this might be good advice if she plans to run a traditional/conventional GOP style campaign. My advice to her? Don't. This was the downfall of Fred Thompson. And, to a lesser extent, Duncan Hunter. They tried to operate within the confines of the traditional. By doing this they have not only the dem's and msm to contend with but also the elitist GOP Hierarchy. All working against them.

Problem is, most politicians see that one paved, wide highway that will take them to victory. Truth is, there are other less traveled paths if they just seek them out - IMHO. Darvin Dowdy

And do you really want us to start listing Barry's pratfalls? 57 states? The Austrian language?

You keep following those polls that said she lost the debate, sweetheart. Eight weeks on the national stage vs. Biden with 30-plus years. He told 14 lies in that debate. But you just go on believing what you want.

Excellent advice, but above all she must never, never, NEVER forget that there is absolutely nothing (NOTHING!!!!) she can do that will appease the Lefties in any way, shape or form.

To win, run right. Bring the center to you.

Oh, and don't forget, if they bring a knife, you bring a gun; if they send one of yours to hospital, you send one of theirs to the morgue. It's the Chicago way.

If Palin’s research team can dig up the passenger list from the Scare Force One debacle, it would do a lot of damage to the Administration and all of its allies

This statement, right here, helps define the truly deluded nature of modern conversatism. First of all, it makes no sense. There weren't any civilian passengers on Air Force One. It's the president's flying limousine. It wasn't ferrying people between Boston and Los Angeles. If it had, Fox News would have already booked them.

Secondly, the Defense Department was responsible for the excercise, not the president. And "Scare Force One" didn't put a dent in Obama's approval rating. Nobody cares. Sorry, but the reason Hurricane Katrina damaged Bush was because it took the lives of a thousand Americans, destroyed a city, and during this crisis people believed Bush did not react quick enough. Air Force One flying too close to the Manhattan skyline is nothing in comparison, especially since no one was seriously hurt.

If the right names are on that passenger list, she might not be running against Barack Obama in 2012.

This statement is just bizarre. Really, you're out on the edge there, pal. What exactly are you suggesting?

Sarah should bide her time. She needs to wait until the MSM dies off and she will be treated at least somewhat fairly. If she jump back in too soon, they'll just screw her again (figuratively, not Lettermanly).

She needs to wait until my prayers are answered and Katie Couric's face falls off.

A thought-provoking piece. Thanks for writing it. Hate to drag these names into it, but this is the type of column I used to expect from Noonan and Parker: honest arguments without the dismissive, arrogant tone and recycling of media-driven myths.

People can say what they want about Gov. Palin's "speech patterns" (I never have trouble understanding her), the woman has a track record of governance. All criticism of her really should begin and end with that.

I agree with what you say and the fact he isn't a conservative and just voted no on ANWR drilling which really makes me mad especailly since I paid 2.99 a gallon this morning for gas!

I wanted to use this forum as an opportunity to hope and fervently pray David Letterman never gets caught outside the safe liberal environs of NYC. Actually I’d like to see him have a part in the next Saw movie pitting Letterman, Olberman, Garafalo and David Axelrod against each other. Now there’s a star vehicle with potential. Have Jon Voight be the old man. I bet it’d sell more tickets than whatever it was Voight did last year.

Name names. That may be the best, although it's hard to say any one element will make or break anything. But still, this would be big. A LOT of Alaskans know very well what is going on--we might be isolated but we're not stupid. The view is quite clear from up here. Being gagged last time simply aided and abetted the liars who are now occupiers.

I just hope she doesn’t blow any credibility going out to campaign for John McCain though.

That would be some nerve of McLame after the treachery of his campaign and his fat daughter's comments. His statement was tepid and back-handed at the same time. He's a stupid old ass.

She’s doing it step by step , this weeks trip to NY was a success ,( add to that the pipeline deal ).

We are living in the age when fascism became a fact of life. This is not just bias; it was a media hi9t job put out by the White House. Letterman was following orders, and this kind of disgusting sexism going largely unnoticed is another symptom.

These base and offensive jokes were meant to detract from Palin's successes this week, because she is a threat. They could not mention her speech, her charity work (even this site's contributor's were oblivious) or the pipeline. No, the subject had to be changed to raping her daughter and calling Sarah Palin herself a slut.

This country is going to hell. Seriously, I'm expecting it to get really scary, like a fake epidemic, borders closed and people going to ovens, because the political tone now is rabid and mob-like.

I like Liz Cheney too. She isn't charasmatic like Palin but she is very smart and I think the two would actually be a winning combo. I like Rubio too but I'd like to know more about him.

This is a very good piece. I hope Mrs. Palin takes you up on the idea to give a speech at one or more July 4 Tea Parties. That would be big, for the country and for her national political career, if she wants one. She is the PERFECT voice for anti-tax, anti-deficit, anti-socialist Tea Partiers.

I sure hope she'll give us the opportunity to support her for Pres. in '12.

Like many others have said Sarah does a lot for charity. I think it's way too early for her to come out and announce she is running. She will be attacked relentlessly for 3.5 years intead of 4 and she'll fatigue mist people.

I think she is raising money through SarahPac to help other conservatives as well as herself. I expect that Sarah will go out and campaign for conseratives in 2010. I just hope she doesn't blow any credibility going out to campaign for John McCain though. I suspect he would never ask her to. I'm of the opinion that the animosity his daughter feels is probably a result of him bitterly complaining to her and his wife that Sarah stole his thunder and that she is the one who got out the vote which was mostly for her. That is a bitter pill to swallow when you've wanted noting so badly as the presidency and thought you had cultivated the right resume to get it. Yet he lost and his running mate ascends to a level of popularity that dwarfs you and relegates you to the forgoten bin.
