David Letterman’s Stupid Blame-Dodging Tricks

posted at 12:34 pm on June 11, 2009 by Jim Treacher
regular view

Whew! Everything’s okay now, folks, because David Letterman has publicly apologized for cruelly mocking the teenaged children of a politician he doesn’t like:

You can tell this is an apology because at no point does he actually apologize. Just because it’s an angry, insincere, self-pitying (“Get yourself a talk show, folks”), self-justifying whine, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t just drop the whole thing already. They’re only jokes, right? First Amendment! You wingnuts do it too! Etc.

So now we’re supposed to accept that Letterman wasn’t lashing out at Sarah Palin through her 14-year-old daughter — which would be totally sick, after all — but through her 18-year-old daughter. He was just too lazy to make sure he was publicly humiliating the correct offspring of the person he clearly loathes, right?

And we’re also supposed to accept that even though he was joking about Bristol being a slut — not Willow, honest! — it’s okay because after all, Bristol is an unwed teen mother. It wasn’t a rape joke, silly, it was a whore joke. This is the substance of Letterman’s “apology.”

Hey, all you Palin-haters, here’s a fun fact you might not know: Barack Obama was conceived out of wedlock when his mom was barely legal!

That’s right, Ann Dunham Soetoro was born on 11/29/42, she married Barack Obama, Sr. on 2/2/61, and their son was born on 8/4/61. So lil’ Barry would’ve been conceived somewhere around his mom’s 18th birthday, most likely before, with a man who was not her husband. And his parents’ subsequent marriage wasn’t even legal, because Barack Sr. was still married to a woman in Kenya. Ann was in the same situation then as Bristol is now, except the father hung around a little longer. And she didn’t have a seething mob dogging her heels and then running back to their news networks and late-night talk shows.

Boy, I’ll bet Jack Parr is in Heaven right now, wishing he’d done some hilarious gags about Obama’s mom banging Mickey Mantle and getting hit on by JFK.

Here, Dave, let me try to help you out: “Governor Palin, I apologize for my amazingly stupid and cruel jokes about your daughter, and for being too lazy to even make sure I was joking about the correct one. It was wrong to lash out at you through your children, and I won’t ever do it again.” If you’re capable of saying that, then maybe we’ll think about letting you off the hook.

Until then, I’m sticking with “Letterman thinks raping little girls is funny.”

P.S. Tim Blair has a good round-up of reaction to Letterman’s hostile squirming. Isn’t it interesting that CBS took the A-Rod joke out of the transcript it sent out?

P.P.S. The Palins put out a statement that they have no intention of boosting Letterman’s ratings by appearing on his show, and besides, it would be wise to keep Willow away from him. I was kind of hoping Todd would help Letterman with a brand-new bit: “Will It Heal?”

P.P.P.S. “Because, you know, all unwed mothers are sluts, except for Letterman’s wife.” Well, he did marry her… once his son hit kindergarten.

The sad part about all this is the story regarding the Lettermans. Daves mother, who’s real name is supposedly Eva Schindler, reportedly was a German citizen in WW2 and had been working in a Berlin brothel for over 12 years.
She was a frequent “paid toy” for Heinrich Himmler. As the war ended, and her looks faded, she escaped Berlin as the Russians entered the city. She fled to France where, she practiced her English enough to rid herself of most of her accent. She found passage to America and moved to Indiana where she found employment in a South Bend brothel next to ND. Mr. Letterman, who at the time was employed as a carnival worker, and Eva, conceived a child beneath the Dogdem Cars. It was Dave. Two years later they married as Dave’s father quit the carnival life due to a phoney insurance injury scam. Years later, after Dave became famous, he met and married his current wife, who at 18 made money by being a stripper in an ugly, down scale strip club that featured men paying women to keep their clothes ON!

Pretty funny, right Dave.

Why doesn’t anybody get it? Liberals do not apologize. THEY ASK OTHERS TO APOLOGIZE. They are NEVER WRONG!
Letterman is just telling jokes when he calls Sarah Palins daughter a whore and Yankees player A Rod a sleazy minority rapist who would screw a young girl at the ballpark.

Poor misunderstood Letterman. He’s a liberal and doesn’t need to apologize for his atrocities.

As a Yankees fan I am angry with Letterman for dissing A Rod. Where’s the outrage? If a Republican or conservative had called A Rod a rapist, all hell would have broken out in the media….. especially in the main stream media.

People following this story understand the confusion fueling the controversy over Letterman’s “joke” but it would be impossible to grasp from his “apology”. He never acknowledges the fact that 14-year-old Willow was on the New York trip because the thrust of this clip is portraying the Palins as uptight crazy hicks.

miles on June 11, 2009 at 2:33 PM

Rather than going on Dave’s show, perhaps Todd & Sarah could invite him to come with them on a moose-hunt in Alaska. Willow & Bristol are invited too.

All this means is Dave’s hoping that Willow turns 15 before November, so during the 2012 campaign she’ll turn 18 and in his mind it will be OK to make whore jokes about her then.

The “just jokes” defense is a canard. Those were not jokes. Jokes are good humored and created to entertain. Entertainment was not the point of these “jokes”. The point was to ridicule, besmirch, and demean someone with whom he disagrees politically.

While it is tasteless to ridicule Governor Palin, it is disgusting and indefensible to ridicule her teenage daughters in order to get at Governor Palin.

Apologize already Dave. Show that you still retain some of your Midwestern values. You attacked the Palin’s teenage daughters man. Don’t you get it?

Jed_Eckert on June 11, 2009 at 2:13 PM

Oh hell yes! Allah works the Palin stuff for all the hits he can get – you want to talk about whore – Allah is a “web hit whore”. **Allah – that’s meant as a compliment.

**Hey Jim – get the story right about Obama, ya bum. Everyone knows he was immaculately conceived.

The David Letterman thing – yes, well … my take …

David Letterman is old man who has a fetish for underage girls. It wasn’t a joke he was making – this was a fantasy of his. Dave has lots of fantasies like that – you think that gap in his teeth is big when he grins? You have seen it when he got caught with his pants around his ankles watching “Lord of the Flies” in a Theater once.

That was a joke … oh wait … you think it was over the line? Well I’ll make it up to him – I’d like to invite Dave down here to the swamps of Louisiana to be my guest. There’s some amphibious wildlife down here that I can take him out to see. I’m sure he’ll enjoy it.

Problem solved yeah?

Good job, Treacher!

james23 on June 11, 2009 at 2:44 PM

Y’all might consider this as well: The audience was laughing. They were laughing the night he introduced the “jokes” and they were laughing at his snide reiteration of those same jokes.

These are the avid consumers of the kind of lazy, mindless, nastiness that is the common fare of today’s comedians.

Do you think any one of them hesitated for a moment, or maybe gasped before guffawing at that fool’s puerile hostility?

What percentage of that audience were tourists from middle America? Were there any fathers or mothers in the audience?

Makes you wonder about your country, doesn’t it?

“This guy is just trying to get himself out of trouble,” said Gandy.

Not to be crass, but let’s just say another late night talk show host made a joke like this…

“Hey, did you hear? Dave Letterman took his son to the ball park. A-Rod took Dave’s son out back and gave him his rod.”

Ha-ha! Oh, what a chuckle.

Hmmm…I don’t believe Mr. Letterman would just dismiss a “joke” about his son being abused, would you? I’m sure the spit would be flying from his tooth gap.

thgrant on June 11, 2009 at 3:22 PM

Letterman may be on to something when he says “get a talk show of your own…” The days of people like Letterman, MSNBC and Chris Matthews having monopolies over American audiences are over. Sarah and Todd Palin are correct for not boosting Letterman’s ratings by appearing on his show, but I do think they need to levy a withering attack of their own on Letterman via YouTube. It costs next to nothing and we know to a moral certainty that millions of people will watch it — more than those who watched Letterman’s show. That’s for sure. It’s time to put people like Letterman in their place with the leveling power of the internet. The Palins should echo Jim Treacher’s wisdom by reminding millions of Americans that David Letterman thinks statutory rape is funny, and they should call for a boycott of his sponsors. I bet CBS and Letterman will change their unapologetic tune when they sense fiscal consequences on the horizon. And it won’t take much. We have seen how skittish sponsors pull their support based on the complaints of just a few perturbed old ladies. Sarah and Todd can cause much more havoc than that with just one 5-minute, well-written diatribe that calls Letterman out for his tasteless and mean-spirited attacks. Letterman thinks there is nothing funny about Obama, but he thinks publicly ascribing statutory rape is hilarious. I regret having to cross this talented man off my OK list. He is definitely not OK.

Of course, we all know what happens when you put someone or something on a pedestal…they can’t live up to those unrealistic expectations, and they come falling down.

Sincerely apologize for the Obama/Biden offspring jokes, commit to not repeat jokes of that ilk and encourage all participants in discourse to do the same. I also don’t think it’s for Obama to insert himself in this whole thing, but if he’s ever asked about it, I’d be VERY interested in what he has to say. He more than anyone ought to find sexist jokes about young teen mothers to be reprehensible. I won’t hold my breath that he will, tho.

Letterman is adept at working the one-liners, putting a double meaning into his words, and using pauses along with a dead-pan expression to get a laugh. He mocked the Palins through his pseudo “apology.” He joked about their outrage in condemning his gutter-level monologue.

I’d boycott his show, but I stopped watching it years ago when his ideology overtook his sense of humor.

NOW and other feminist organizations totally blew whatever credibility they had when they turned a blind eye to all the sexist attacks on Hillary Clinton by Obama and the left during the primaries. The left treated their own much. much worse than Republicans ever did, and I repeatedly defended Chelsea Clinton from their remarks, as she was out there every day stumping for her mother with poise and grace and intelligence, while the Obama camp was busy hiding Michelle because of all her incendiary remarks. NOW’s remarks are a day late and a dollar short for me, and a left-handed rebuke at best because they just couldn’t help referring to an ancient smear about Rush. Sorry, no sale.

At the same time I hope that Alex Rodriguez decides to sue Letterman for slander.

But Jim, it’s almost insufferable to compare. Until we manage to right the media into a REAL NEWS reporting machine we just spin wheels.
My opinion is – we keep acting like ducks and let it drip off us like water, act respectfully and with class as always until the bombs drop. Not literal bombs, but the Admin has already overreached and continous it’s ruinous pan, the Dem party is already worried and the policies and MOST importantly reelection – America is just about done with already worn out “WE DO IT NOW OR THE COUNTRY IS DOOMED”

Have faith Jim,. Let Letterman have Palin. She can take it, look at what she has already endured for Gods Sake. And Palin, know that America not only respects you but knows EXACTLY what is going on.

Move forward. Concentrate on the goal, not the Enemy.

I corrected my bad grammar at the insistence of my daughter who is visiting and I am very busy corrupting her. I am sorry.

That’s right, not liking jokes about little girls being raped is political correctness.
Jim Treacher on June 11, 2009 at 6:44 PM

Letterman>>
“Can’t keep Eliot Spitzer away from her (Palin’s) daughter.”

You have a hell of an imagination. How does that translate into rape? It was Spitzer who was on the receiving end of that line not Palin’s daughter. Who did Spitzer rape? I hope you aren’t self projecting.

mr1216 on June 11, 2009 at 2:46 PM

THAT was the most disgusting part of this to me also. Any “man” that sat in the audience and laughed at that buck toothed, bastard daddy, pedophile (lighten up, Dave, it was a joke) should submit to an orchidectomy. They don’t need them anymore.

Bill Blizzard on June 12, 2009 at 2:15 AM

Why are you pretending not to know I’m talking about the A-Rod joke?

I’d be more ambivalent about the Spitzer joke if it hadn’t come a full 24 hours after the first one. It seems very unlikely that somebody on Letterman’s staff hadn’t been told by then that Willow went on that trip, not Bristol.

Move forward. Concentrate on the goal, not the Enemy.

seesalrun on June 12, 2009 at 1:12 AM

That’s exactly what they’re doing. Their goal is to run Sarah Palin out of public life by attacking her family. I don’t care for it, and letting it happen without opposition seems like an odd way of moving forward.

Jim Treacher on June 12, 2009 at 11:12 AM

Jim Treacher on June 12, 2009 at 11:12 AM

Sorry Jim. I didn’t see the video from the first night that started the controversy. But after watching it and considering Letterman made clear he was referring to Palin’s 18yo, I still think you are being way too PC. Palin shouldn’t have put her children in the spotlight during the RNC convention. Especially with the 18yo being pregnant at the time while being a spokesperson for abstinence education, funded by an apparel manufacturer which makes slutty clothing for tweens. As far as my friends and I are concerned, nothing is taboo when it comes to jokes. If you wince we consider you to be PC. My Jewish friends even make jokes about the Holocaust. Libs were outraged at Rush’s shot at Chelsea Clinton and my friends and I considered them to be PC. After reading Hot Air for the past 3 years I thought being PC was a taboo here.

RE: “Their goal is to run Sarah Palin out of public life by attacking her family.”

From the comments section it appears Palin supporters and conservatives don’t watch Letterman. Therefore the goal you attribute here wouldn’t work. The only motive was to get a cheap laugh.

Their goal is to destroy this Country and anyone who supports it with it.

Our goal is to save it. WE have to concentrate on the goal and not lower ourselves to their level. THAT would give them exactly what they want.

That being said, I’m glad Palin is on the offense as she should be. If anyone public or private had said something like that about my daughter, well…

Not liking jokes about a child being sexually assaulted, or the blundering attempts to excuse it — sorry, but if you’re following Sarah Palin’s activities closely enough to make a joke about her daughter getting knocked up at a baseball game, you can at least make sure you’re slandering the correct one — is politically correct. How about that.

Stand tall, my friend. You might just be the finest human being who has ever lived.

Jim Treacher on June 12, 2009 at 10:52 PM

Jim Treacher on June 12, 2009 at 10:52 PM

How do you explain this line that used to be in the banner of your blog?
“Mother, may I sleep with Treacher”

I know it’s not there now. But when I checked in awhile back and seen that I chuckled. But some, like you now, would think it’s a reference to statutory rape. But nannies like you seem to know the magical dividing line on what humor steps over that line.

Bill Blizzard on June 12, 2009 at 11:34 PM

I wasn’t talking about Palin.

Good thread, Treach. They’ve set the PC rules and we either have to make them use them or ignore them completely. The former former will hopefully show the libs for the hypocrites they are.

Jim Treacher on June 13, 2009 at 1:08 AM

RE: Mother, May I Sleep with Danger?
That answer is pathetic. That and a dollar will get you a McChicken sandwich at McDonald’s. Do you think yourself to be “Mr. Danger“ because of your musings on the blog? It was dangerous to write your PC babble here, ( would you like some cheese with that whine? ), not thinking about the implications of your old banner.

The only letter separating your name from “teacher” is the letter “r”. So they both sound almost exactly the same when pronounced phonetically. So, “Mother may I sleep with Treacher” is a statutory rape joke made worse because a teacher is an authority figure. But I’ll give you the benefit of doubt and chalk it up to not thinking it through.

A mistake. Just like Letterman’s writers. They scan through a news story about Palin visiting NYC and find an itinerary but missed the part of who was accompanying her, if it was in the article they read at all. I and everyone I asked, about 40 people, had no idea who was accompanying Palin in NYC. The people that seen it live thought he was referring to Bristle. I told the joke to those that didn’t see it and they thought the same. And so did his audience which I would assume are a majority of New Yorkers.

You started this topic after Letterman made it clear in his half assed apology that he wasn’t referring to Willow. There is something sick and twisted in your logic that you want to keep insisting Letterman was referring to raping Willow. Why? Because the apology has to be your way or the highway? I think I’ll take back the doubt. Thou doth protest too much, methinks. Your attitude makes me think you would like to burn or ban some of William Shakespeare’s works. Or muzzle Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, etc.

From Palin’s response:

“Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman.”

Letterman invited only Sarah and Todd on the show. Not the whole family. That statement isn’t a joke and it implies Willow being raped for sure according to your logic.
