Quietly Cleaning Up The Global Warming Scam

Watts Up With That? has an ongoing series, “How Not To Measure Temperature.” It illustrates obvious temperature measuring problems – like placing weather stations next to AC units that blow hot air all around them. Well, there’s been a response:
Apparently, the NWS thought enough of the criticism of the siting next to a/c heat exchangers to do something about it. And, I’ve been hearing from time to time, that stations that volunteers have visited and we have showcased in “How Not To Measure Temperature, Part X” have been quietly cleaned up.
That’s lovely – it’s nice that something is at least being done. The essential dishonesty of the “quiet” cleanups is disturbing, though. Not least because it’s going to facilitate the ongoing switch from global warming hype to global cooling hype.
The anthropogenic global warming scam exists on many levels, from deliberate dishonesty by Al Gore and other profiteers, to typical media hype, to the bandwagon effect on well-meaning but ignorant, emotionally-driven people who further propagate the lies. Some people my age (I’m 40) remember the global cooling scare of the 70s. I don’t know anyone who remembers the global warming scare of the 50s, though this Frank Capra video is a wonderful example of it.
The global cooling scare that lasted from the turn of the century until the 20s is hardly heard of. But we’ve had a century of switching back and forth between global cooling and global warming scares. It’s not some mass conspiracy, plotted in a smoke-filled back room. It’s a combination of some huckster con men who stand to directly profit, scientists who like the way government funding guarantees their jobs, the media which benefits from publishing dramatic stories, political opportunists who use the hype to accomplish political goals and gain power, and recently, people who want to enjoy that sanctimonious, holier-than-thou feeling without submitting to traditional religion.
I’m not suggesting that the “quiet cleanup” is quiet due to anything more than simple embarrassment. But the result of it is that it will help pave the way for the next big global cooling scare. As the recorded temperatures drop back to normal levels, there will be media reports of the sudden sharp drop in temperature, and it will finally be widely publicized that warming stopped some time ago. The media will publish breathless reports. Demands for explanations will be made and taxpayer money for studies will be provided. This is easily predictable as these switches have happened four times before just in the last century. Articles fretting about global cooling started in earnest a couple of a years ago and the pace is picking up. Newsbusters linked today to an article suggesting we may have a year without summer; an interesting flashback to when I was a kid and an adult warned me to enjoy my summer vacation, because we wouldn’t have that kind of warm weather when I grew up. The writer of Ecclesiastes did warn that there’s nothing new under the sun.
Because anthropogenic global warming theory is fueled by some very dicey (and consistently wrong) computer models, which in turn frequently use demonstrably bad data like that generated by weather stations sited next to AC units, nor is global warming unequivocally bad, the hucksters are going to have to switch back to cooling eventually. So buckle your seatbelts – we’re about to be taken for another ride. I’m really looking forward to how the media portrays Al Gore as a hero for building a massive house and jetting all over the world – he’s just doing his part to fight global cooling!

I could use some global warming right about now. We had to crank up the furnace again. The propane deliver guy came by yesterday to let us in on their summer fill up discount price. Only $1.55 a gallon. My husband thinks the garden froze to death last night. Ah, springtime in the rockies.

The other data set which is suspect comes from the Ex Soviet Union.
Before the fall, they had a fairly comprehensive system of weather stations, but it went into disrepair after the Sov Union and Warsaw pact fell apart.
We really don’t know how realible that information is… and as the Sov Union covered a LARGE part of the Eurasian landmass… well…
Garbage In? Garbage Out…

Amazing. The only thing missing is the stranded polar bear.

I think you are looking at this the wrong way. The “quiet” clean up is simply a “quiet” cover up. Right now there is not alot of talk about those temp recorders next to A/C units or the ones in the middle of a blacktop parking lot, but they were very strong evidence of invalid data. Well, they quietly correct the recorders, but you can be sure they will not correct the data that they got before, they will simply “correct” the new data to match what they were getting. How many times have they changed those temp numbers so far anyway?
One less thing us crazy Global Warming disbelievers can use as ammo against them.

I think the only cure for this kind of hysteria is memory.

THAT is perfect. I almost completed that thought when trying to explain the issue to other people but i always got so pissed off thinking about it, I’d lose my train of thought. That part needs to be spread far and wide. It will resonate with many of the useful idiots on this issue.

Yep.
I was discussing this with a scientist friend who brought up the point of instrumentation. Since we’re only talking about tenths of a degree, he questioned the accuracy of older instruments to even measure that precise. Also, calibration methodology, frequency of calibration, standard placement, etc.
In other words, before digital, how could they even precisely get a valid measurement of 80.1 vs. 80.2.

It’s been raining in So Cal in June. And it snowed in Malibu the last two years running. Where’s the global warming? I’d like my money back, please.

“Huckster” is the key word here. I’ll add a reminder about how the injunction to “follow the money” will help you understand almost everything.
As many people have pointed out, saying “Yes, the earth is getting warmer (or cooler), and that could certainly cause problems, but it’s a natural phenomenon, and there’s little or nothing that we can do about it, anyway” is not going to get you any research grants.
