Meghan McCain, Sex and the GOP

posted at 4:13 pm on May 7, 2009 by
[ Politics ]

Young people always think they’re the first generation to discover sex and that their elders are uptight prudes who couldn’t possibly enjoy it. This phenomenon was illustrated in Meghan McCain’s latest Beastly love letter to her precious GOP.  (I see a lot of this sort of love at the battered women’s shelter where I volunteer.)

But for whatever reasons, the American public and media remain overly engrossed in our politicians’ sex lives and, as in this case, those of their families. There’s an especially unhealthy attitude among conservatives. Daughters of Republican politicians aren’t expected to have sex, let alone enjoy it—as if there were some strange chastity belt automatically attached to us female offspring. God forbid anyone talk realistically about life experiences and natural, sexual instincts. Nope, the answer is always abstinence.

The worst sexual double standard in politics right now is that too many subconsciously believe Republican women are void of sexual desire altogether.

This is something I know about firsthand. During my father’s 2000 presidential campaign, a reporter asked how he would feel if I became pregnant and wanted an abortion. He answered that it would be my choice, sending shockwaves throughout the party (because for the GOP there is only one answer, and obviously Senator McCain’s daughter shouldn’t be engaging in sex ever).

Wow.  Is there an anti-GOP stereotype she won’t promote?

I know you think it’s all about you, Meghan, but it’s really not.  You see, we tend to promote abstinence for all teenagers, not just daughters of politicians.  It’s not personal at all.  In fact, millions and millions of conservatives (and Republicans, too!) have never once considered your sex life.

There is no unhealthy attitude among conservatives toward sex.  It is not unhealthy to promote teen abstinence. Abstinence is the one sure way to prevent teen pregnancy and STDs.  And when we talk to our kids about sex, most of us do discuss birth control methods – if nothing else, to make sure they understand condoms have a 14% failure rate.  I do object to the sexual propaganda the schools put out these days, but that is not the same as being unwilling to have teenagers know about birth control methods.

The fact is that the answer is not always abstinence.  But when you are a teenager, generally lacking the resources to deal with the potential consequences of your actions, abstinence IS the best choice.  Otherwise your parents will have to pay (with their money, time, and emotional exhaustion) for your sexual escapades.  Hardly seems fair, does it?  But hey, if you’ve got the money, are living independently, and are emotionally mature enough to parent a child, then knock yourselves out, kids.  Hump away.  (Because if you were emotionally mature enough to parent a child, and living independently, then you’d be an adult and you wouldn’t need to be reminded of the consequences of your sexual activity. There are other reasons to promote abstinence, but that’s a post for another day.  Just this one is more than sufficient.)

Speaking of natural instincts, I often feel the urge to throttle the necks of people who annoy me by cutting me off in traffic or expressing really lame-brained opinions.  Not all natural instincts should be indulged.

The idea that teenagers are mindless bags of hormones who must and will have sex – while at the same time they are mature people, easily able to make an informed decision to have an abortion – while at the same time eighteen year olds are entirely too young, just babies, really, to decide to enlist in the military – is tiresome.  But the commonality of all the ways that the left views teenagers is this – in all cases, they think someone else is better suited to aid them than their parents.

Another concept that has escaped Ms. McCain (as a “liberal Republican”) is that quite a lot of conservatives object to the government paying for sex ed at all, outside the basics in biology class.  We feel that it is the parent’s job, not the school district’s, and we’re quite tired of their encroachment under the guise of “some parents don’t talk to their kids.”  There are more ways to accomplish a goal than to have a government program for it.  Alternatives like privately-funded organizations printing and distributing educational material apparently never occur to these people.  Given the limited number of hours in a school day and the deplorable academic ratings our country currently holds, we’d prefer that teachers focus on math, science and English, not global warming consensus and fisting.  (Yes, I know what that is, even though I’m like, way old.)

As for the dreaded sexual double standard… it isn’t unconscious.  It’s an extremely common stereotype described by this article and quite easy to spot.  Just like the “rich, stingy Republican” stereotype that is likely the topic for young Meghan’s next missive.  It’s what liberals have thought for years, in spite of the facts.  The truth is we like sex just fine.  In fact, conservatives enjoy it more than liberals.  According to The authoritative 1995 University of Chicago survey Sex in America

conservative Protestant married women were the group most likely to report that they “nearly always” orgasmed during sex. Married women of all religions were almost twice as likely as unmarried women to describe their sex lives as “extremely satisfying.”

The rest of the article is a diatribe that more or less advises irresponsible, prudish, dishonest Republican parents to – finally! – step up and take parenting advice from Meghan McCain.

We live in a big world, one where you can contract a life-long STD, have an unplanned pregnancy, or get date-raped, just to name a few of the dangerous results of having sex. We should prepare our kids for it, realistically. Then they might be more apt to make the right choices when they live in it themselves.

Good Lord.  Do you really think we’ve never heard of those things and done our best to protect our children from them?  Or are you just engaging in more President Teleprompter straw man battles?  At least you omitted the tell-tale “there are those” line this time.  You’re beclowning yourself, Meghan.  Stop it.

.

Added: you know who else is carrying on about sex?  That Other McCain guy.  Seriously, he’s a wild man, making some pretty suggestive comments about Perez Hilton.  I don’t know what to make of that; with six kids I was sure he was batting for our team.  But I do agree, Allah hates him.  Besides, anybody whining about conjunctivitis should just suck it up already.  Complain to me when you get ebola.  Wimp.

Even MORE sex – Pundette is Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places but I can’t read it.  I can’t get past the title.  I keep hearing Buckwheat/Eddie Murphy singing Wookin Pa Nub.

Spot on post Laura – Megan really highlights the fact that she’s so young and has had really very little life experience.

Combine that with the fact that she’s lived a sheltered “trust fund” life for entire existence and I suppose we can forgive her ignorance a bit.

three nouns that should never be in the same sentence…

battleoflepanto1571 on May 7, 2009 at 7:10 PM

FIRST:

Daughters of Republican politicians

Of whom exactly is the “Republican” politician is she the daughter?

SECOND:

During my father’s [FAILED] 2000 presidential campaign, a reporter asked how he would feel if I became pregnant and wanted an abortion.

Megatons – historical context is apparently lost on you. This goes back to the 1988 presidential contest when another loser, Michael Dukakis, was asked about his wife, Kitty, was raped and the death penalty.

Not all natural instincts should be indulged.

My natural instinct to kill people who anger me, for example.

If I had a submachine gun and enough ammo while driving typical DC traffic, I think I could make a real dent in global warming. That idiot who cut me off? Dead man. That lady going 45 mph in the left lane? Dead. Just give me a hunting license for people who don’t know to drive, and there would be a drastic cutback in the amount of vehicular traffic, leading to a reduction of greenhouse emissions.

Because I care about our planet.

Sounds like the talk her mother should have had with her. There’s a message there somewhere.

Probably, the most sensible post I’ve ever read in “Hot Air”.

hailsriram on May 7, 2009 at 7:30 PM

I’ve been trying to ignore Meghan and now I know why. She’s maddening. Someone needs to tell her to stop.

Oh – you just did. Thanks.

Pundette on May 7, 2009 at 7:40 PM

If the goal of sex-ed is to prevent STD’s and unwanted pregnancies, I suggest going the other way. We should misinform our children. How can they get STD’s if they don’t know how to properly contract them? And teenage pregnancy will be left to those brave enough to do their own research. (just satire)

AbaddonsReign on May 7, 2009 at 7:42 PM

I think what Ms. McCain fails to realize is that we tell our children to stay abstinent when they are teens, because they are NOT in a life-long monogamous relationship YET. We also tell them that sex is wonderful and very enjoyable in the context of a life-long monogamous relationship. Procreation is a beautiful side effect of a wonderful and very enjoyable sex life in that life-long monogamous relationship.

I was thinking the exact same thing.. except I was going to put “BEST POST EVAH!”

Bravo, Laura!

We live in a big world, one where you can contract a life-long STD, have an unplanned pregnancy, or get date-raped, just to name a few of the dangerous results of having sex.

Date-rape is sex? I thought it was rape. But what do I know – Meghan is the expert.

Oh, man, you should have seen the revised sex ed curriculum we had a fight over here in Montgomery County, Maryland. One part was a curriculum on homosexuality designed not to teach useful stuff (like unprotected an@l s*x is high-risk behavior for contracting AIDS) but only tolerance, which was highlighted by a teacher’s manual that rated different religions on their attitudes toward homosexuality. This part of the curriculum was struck down by a liberal federal judge.

The more amusing part of the curriculum featured a video explaining how to put a condom on a cucumber. Back when I was still blogging, I wrote about a dozen posts on this, mocking the proponents of this curriculum as the “cucumber people.” If you can believe it, there were some people who claimed not to know how to put on a condom. Seriously. Including an adult who wrote to our local newspaper.

For the entertainment of anyone with too much time on his hands, here’s a link to one of my posts, which links to my one-page instruction sheet on putting on a condom. It’s only linked, so the rest of the post is SFW.

Is it okay if we substitute Laura for the liberal, media-appointed Meghan McCain?

If not Laura, can I request Doctor Zero?

That dude has been hitting home runs every time he writes.

Abstinence is the one sure way to prevent teen pregnancy and STDs. And when we talk to our kids about sex, most of us do discuss birth control methods – if nothing else, to make sure they understand condoms have a 14% failure rate.

Abstinence is. Your way to talk to teenagers has the opposite effect.

HondaV65 on May 7, 2009 at 7:10 PM

Her ignorance would be a little more forgivable if she wasn’t so intent on talking down to everyone else. One of the surest signs of youth is not knowing how much you don’t know.

If this stupid Macain gal is becoming the standard bearer for the Republican party can someone direct me to a party that actually has some principles….thanks

Ugh. Why put Oink McCain’s name in the same sentence as ‘sex’.

/barf.

It’s not her looks really, it’s her pig RINO attitude and ego. I can’t stand the slob.

As if her father hadn’t sufficiently trashed the family name, Meghan feels the need to pile on.

The Other McCain on May 7, 2009 at 9:08 PM

Hey! She has good intentions, and that’s all that matters!

LEAVE MEG-MEG ALONE!

/Allah

It's Vintage, Duh on May 7, 2009 at 9:47 PM

Leave Meg COMPLETELY alone. Stop reading her ridiculous crap. The left would be thrilled if Republicans got in a fight over Meghan McCain. She isn’t worth fighting over. She hasn’t done SQUAT for this country. Her daddy served, and still serves. Meghan just sat around and enjoyed the good life that her family’s work provided her.

Stop wasting comments on her. Ignore her for a month, and the libs will find another patsy with which to bait the Republicans.

hawksruleva on May 7, 2009 at 10:04 PM

It’s Vintage, Duh on May 7, 2009 at 9:47 PM

Allah’s a really nice guy, and I suspect he’s right, that aside from enjoying the spotlight (and why shouldn’t she enjoy it?) she probably is a True Believer that the lot of us are freaks who should be not be in charge of the GOP. That’s more or less what her dad believes, and she obviously admires him a great deal. So it all makes perfect sense, and in her Jimmy Choos I might just feel the same way.

But I’m in Keds, with a massive tax bill, having lost one husband while I was pregnant, been married to another for most of my adult life, mother to a 19 year old and a (soon to be former) small business owner. I think she’s an ignorant kid without even the sense to realize she’s clueless and to have this twit talk down to people like me is annoying as hell. On a personal level I’d have no difficulty blowing that off, but this isn’t on a personal level.

It would be difficult for me to care less about people’s intentions (except in certain aspects of religious beliefs.) Where politics, especially, are concerned, I care deeply about actions and results.

And La McCain’s actions are to continually bash conservatives and talk down to us, and the results are that the press can continue the ongoing narrative of how much we all suck and how we should be more like Democrats, especially that nice, centrist, budget-cutting President Obama. And the general public – people like my mother who watch 15 minutes of Katie Couric, read the Living section and the obits, and consider themselves well informed – are being bombarded with that message, day after day after day.

And Meghan McCain is helping them do it, regardless of her intentions.

The worst sexual double standard in politics right now is that too many subconsciously believe Republican women are void of sexual desire altogether.

The only way to discern if someone is acting on a subconsciously held belief is
1. if they tell you, in which case it is not sub conscious
2. if they act out, in which case how in the Obamadoodle does she know which subconsciously held belief they are acting on?

This is a delicate situation. This is the worst sexual double standard in politics.

You open the door and the room is absolutely empty

You guys who make harsh derogatory comments about Meghan McCain’s appearance… you reveal a great deal more about yourselves than you do any damage to her. You might want to consider that. And to add insult to injury, you’re not even bringing teh funny. There’s a boatload of “policy” reasons to criticize her that would make you look less like an ass.

And since, for some wacky reason, I can’t post any comments in the Quote of the Day thread, I’ll say it here:

Several commenters refer to her as “Paris McCain” as if that’s some great insult. Paris Hilton, for all her faults, capped on John McCain in a big way AND suggested a specific, sensible, cogent energy policy that really did have the potential to bring a lot of the left and the right together. She also communicated it very effectively, a skill much of the GOP lacks. I wish Meghan McCain would do that instead of just griping about conservatives. I’d cheer her on.

Not really, she is the one who told conservatives to ‘kiss her fat ass’
Once you make a comment like that in public lots of things become fair game.
And let’s be serious, do you think if she looked like Rosie O’donnell that we would ever see her on TV.
She is young and cute and rich and her daddy was the repub nominee and she likes to slam social-cons every chance she gets.
After what happened to sarah Palin I would say snarks about her ‘fat ass’ are fully appropriate

kangjie on May 8, 2009 at 10:02 AM

I don’t care what SHE said. This isn’t about what kind of person she is. It’s about what kind of person the commenter is. For people who want to descend to that level – again, it says more about them then it does about her.

It says that even though there are a multitude of “real” reasons to criticize and oppose her, they’ll take the lazy, thoughtless, grammar school tactic of saying she’s ugly and her mother dresses her funny. And the worst crime of all – it’s not even funny! There’s literally NO redeeming value in it.

It also undermines people who are trying to make real arguments, because they’re more easily dismissed and lumped in with “haters.” People play that card against Palin because she’s a lot harder to criticize on the merits. When they do it to her, it says they’ve got nothing left and are scraping the bottom of the barrel. I really doubt that’s the message conservatives want to send with MMC.

I don’t care that you don’t care what she said. I do.
Words matter.
Telling conservatives to “kiss her fat ass” is a REAL reason to criticize her.
Trust me if Rush Limbaugh said the same thing there would be one running joke after another all the way from John Stewart to David Frum.
You do not get to set the rule on what has redeeming value or what does not. You can have your one opinion and that is all, I can have mine. What you find funny I may not and vice versa.
It’s called free speech, and firing a shot like the one above opens her up to just that.
If you really don’t want to be lumped in with the haters don’t post on Hotair. It does not make any difference how kind or reasoned you may be at one point anybody that disagrees with the left will be lumped in with the haters.
Sarah Palin comes to mind. Ann Coulter comes to mind Rush ccomes to mind.

Excellent article, and though I’ve been known to occasionally defend – and even agree with – Meghan McCain in the past, I’m in full agreement with the initial post.

THIS, however:
