Daschle – he has some very unfortunate ideas about old people, I remember from studying this some months ago.

Something about having to make “hard” decisions about who doesn’t need care, because they won’t live long enough to make it worthwhile. So . . . let them die sooner.

It is tragic what is happening to this country.

Health care and pharmaceuticals are HUGE employers and economic engines in Pennsylvania. Specter has never supported a single payer, government-run system because he knows it will hurt Pennsylvania.

I have to say I am moderately encouraged by Max Baucus’ leadership on this. He is as even-handed a Democrat as there is, he doesn’t have any hardcore left wing in his home state to threaten or bully him, and he gets the financial part of health are as well as anyone in Washington. He and Tom Daschle were not especially close.
