If Congressional Democrats pursue this, it will most likely be with the expectation that the GOP would rise to prevent any sort of bipartisan effort, allowing the Dems to retreat, while blaming the GOP.

That may be what they expect, but Obama is playing with fire here. If this issue gets legs, this issue will trigger enough blowback from more big-name Republicans that the result will be more like You want a truth commission? Okay -- let's go there!

Worse for all right thinking democrats’ POV. They have realize that if they got in the slippery path of criminalizing prior administration policies, then may found themselves in the other side after the next general election. Regardless that some of us may find that highly satisfying, that could easily lead to the downfall of the republic.

i agree with this post to the extent that we have bigger fish to fry. nationalized healthcare (well i call it socialized medicine), cap ‘n trade, soviet aggression towards georgia & everywhere else, iran, north korea, pakistan, afghanistan, pirates.

and that is just the headliners.

the GOP really needs to find one catch phrase (come look at our blog here!) & hammer it.

George Soros is trying to exact a “pound of flesh’ from Mr. Bush. Soros spent how many (millions?) in the 2004 election and Mr. Bush still won. He knew one day he’d be able to buy/steal/find a stooge and win an election (and our country) and seek revenge.

There are currently some folks on the Right who now want these show trials — to expose the Democrats’ hypocrisy, the effectiveness of the program, to defend their reputations etc.

Wasn’t just the Clinton administration using that ploy. The Bush administration did the same thing concerning the Plame outing, refusing to comment on an ongoing case.
If you are against that ploy, better to be against it when ALL Presidents hide behind it.

This is important only as a distraction…your analysis is interesting and academic, but that is all, just a bunch of words.

Obama is doing this as a distraction, his internals shows a slipping…he has embarrassed himself on foreign affairs, domestic economic, let down the unions, made horrendous choices for cabinet position (Janet, it is against the law to cross our borders illegally).

He needed something to distract, a “shiny” object, to shift a “bigger” blame on someone else…but it is backfiring.
Hoping to appease his lefties that are becoming disillusioned, he chose the one subject they could rally around…Get Bush, Get Cheney, Get Rove, Get Rice.

The result will be another huge embarrassment for a man who thinks he is so clever…but so naive.

There is also the risk of the investigations turning into a political liability for the Democratic Party, much like impeachment trial of Bill Clinton. It can turn public opinion if they see the Dem’s focusing on this politically motivated witch hunt, instead of addressing more pressing issues such as the economy and debt. If the narrative shifts beyond the Dem’s and “torture” crowd’s control and becomes about the effectiveness of these techniques, then the Dem’s could end up in a nightmare scenario.
