‘Future of the GOP’ really seems to dig anti-GOP entertainment

I haven’t written a lot about Meghan McCain because to me, she seems like a pleasant enough kid with some really bad ideas. My only comments on her have been to express my hope that her attempts to remake the GOP in her image fail. Despite my strong disagreement with where she wants to lead the GOP, (and because I’m the father of two girls), it does bother me to see the litany of nasty comments about her weight or appearance whenever her latest irritating statement is mentioned on a conservative blog, since expressing such sentiments seems pointless and unnecessary. In truth, I actually agree with some of her moderate positions.
Still, regardless of any sympathy I may have for her as a person, I grow increasingly weary of the disconnect between her calls for us to be more tolerant while she feels free to embrace and celebrate entertainment that shows intolerance for the party’s “radicals.”
First there was her proclamation that Russell Brand is “freaking hilarious.” Brand, of course, is the slovenly ‘comedian’ who used his MTV hosting opportunity as an anti-Palin megaphone. Next was “the funniest thing” she’s ever seen. And now today comes her confession that she’s always had a crush on Eminem, and that she believes he “still looks hot” in his new music video. And yes, that would be the music video in which Mr. Mathers expresses his desire to “nail” Sarah Palin.
It’s clear that McCain considers herself the future of the GOP and has made no secret of her disdain for conservatives who hold views contrary to her own. However, it’s also clear that McCain, for all of her expressed desire for a big tent GOP, lacks the ability to see how her love of entertainment that insults so many of us in that party feeds into our distrust of her. If McCain truly desires to be a leader, she’s got to show a willingness to lead and go against the flow instead of simply embracing the bland, tired GOP bashing that passes for entertainment in an effort to look “hip.”

That’s a good post, Slu. What I don’t get is the willful self-destructive nature that goes hand in hand with her view.
Brand is a great example. Everything he has done that has raised his name out of his niche market has been an assault on GOP values. He derided Bush, mocked Palin, and also mocked the values that social cons try to pass on to the children with his shots at the Jonas Bros, etc.
The inclusion of her statements as acceptable, or to label her efforts as good-hearted, seem to me to be like taking a snake to bed. There is no benefit, and only possibility of death.
I too think the pettiness of attacking her personally should be below us, but I do appreciate drawing a line in the sand. She sure doesn’t speak for me.
When everything she raves for has the common denominator of degrading conservative values, it speaks to intent.
Spirit of 1776 on April 21, 2009 at 6:49 PM
It’s her manner and immaturity that makes her ridiculous and an object of scornful jokes. Here’s hoping she grows out of it. [insert "unecessary" size-ist joke here]

What are “conservative values” anyways? Homophobia, racism, classism, ludditry, anti-intellectualism, anti-education?

We “big tented” and tolerated their RINO views during the last election. I say it is time for her to tolerate our way this time. If she doesn’t like it, there is the democrat party which seems like it might work out even better for her.
PrincipledPilgrim on April 21, 2009 at 8:50 PM
Honestly, I’m a really nice guy but she needs to go away seriously. She’s a typical liberal of today, not your classical liberal. They want others to be tolerant but yet are not even close to being tolerant of other people’s views. They disgust me, including her. Funny enough I believe in a big tent gop but not a big tent conservative movement. Good luck to those folks to the left of us that think they can win over the same people they consistently attack.

She takes easy shots at easy targets. Megs’ evoking of Karl Rove was a quick way of saying to whoever her audience is, “I’m one of you, not one of them” — one of them being most of the Republican Party, and the Republican Party here understood to be the GOP in its pop culture mass media stereotype and caricature. That’s not the way to lead a reform of the Party, which I think does have to happen on some important issues. However, that is a way to position yourself in someone else’s good graces. Whose I’ll leave to her to elaborate upon.
Like I’ve said, she and I agree much more than we don’t. I just don’t dig her willingness to rube-ify the base from within.
Repurblican on April 21, 2009 at 9:01 PM
Meghan is a fool hardy idiot too in love with the ‘attention’ she’s getting to realize she’s a useful pawn to them at best. If she ever became the head of the GOP or even any sort of prominent member I’d be gone as quickly as I could.
She’s a child, she can’t see the forest because she’s too busy staring at herself

Actually, I think she is a conduit to new ideas that can capture new demographics. Throw some ideas out there, and see what sticks. She’s not harming anything, but she IS getting more exposure than she deserves at this point.
Shouldn’t we at least pay attention to a young person who is connected to young people? Isn’t the purpose to attract voters? It doesn’t mean she’s a genius ideologue who can transform the party…she’s just one voice. She may be able to point people in the direction of the GOP.
Let’s face it, the GOP needs to reach out. Maybe we don’t have all the answers.

MSM is using Megan to divide and distract the party and conservatives as the 2010 steamroller is picking up momentum
EricPWJohnson on April 21, 2009 at 9:11 PM
Actually, I disagree. I think the conservative blogs are focusing on her completely on their own…sure, she’s getting MSM exposure, but blogs covering her is a separate issue.
frode on April 21, 2009 at 9:21 PM
My problem with Meghan is that she thinks she is the epitome of knowledge and coolness of republicanism, when she is not. She is two years younger than I am and I have dealt with people like her. She reminds me of the type in school that is so desperate to be with the cool kids, that she compromises everything she believes in to be accepted.
Now the MSM loves her, and she continues to play along to be liked.
I find no bravery in that. However she disagrees with me. She thinks dumping on the uncool GOP is brave.
What I find courageous, in a sense, is someone who is in an uncompromising position to stand by principle and not resolve. For example, Miss California. Perez Hilton is one of the most successful gossip bloggers like it or not. She knew her answer would be controversial and might cost her the crown, however she did not try to fit in. Instead, she stuck by her beliefs and answered with honesty. I find that cool.
She is the type of person I would hang out with. Because I know she won’t stab me in the back to be liked.

Why? Are you also bothered by the litany of nasty comments about Michael Moore’s appearance? Helen Thomas’ appearance? Janeane Garofalo’s appearance? Any other left-wing jackass’ appearance? (And that is what Meghan McCain has turned herself into. Were her last name not McCain she would be rightfully called what she is: a left-wing twit.)
When people say stupid sh*t, they open themselves up to ridicule. Why are people so appalled that people make fun of Meghan McCain when she insults Republicans, conservatives and conservative values in the same ignorant, stupid manner that Michael Moore (and the rest of the Left) does? Should we be going easy on her simply because she’s a woman? Simply because her last name is McCain? Simply because some people consider her vacuous inanity “sweet” and “charming”?
Sorry, screw that. You say stupid, insulting sh*t, you deserve any ridicule that comes your way.

Oh yeah, and it looks like that atheist completely ignored the point that the guy (errr…mouse) that is calling christians “retards” is completely evil and does everything just for money.
I still love how atheist don’t seem to get that “All About the Mormons” was a thinly veiled ranted about atheist. Everyone loves the first 20 minutes but completely ignore the actual message that take place the last few.

She wouldn’t know how to ‘lead’ even after extensive lessons. She just likes attention, attention and more attention and, as usual, Hot Air is giving it to her. Going to wear it out AP(or whomever), folks are getting tired of her. Try to find someone to wait in the wings, when attention to Meghan becomes ‘thread’ bare. And yes, pun intended.

There is a battle for the soul of the Republican Party happening right now and Megan McCain is a jewel to be cherished. Why?
Because … she and the extremely dislikable David Frum, along with the extremely bland David Brooks, and out of touch twins … Kathleen Parker and Peggy Noonan … have become the voice of the “moderate Republican”.
And that’s completely cool with me – because these dopes will be rejected.
Remember … Megan McCain has less life experience, fewer professional accomplishments, and less real knowledge of business than Brittany Spears has – and that’s not saying much for Megan McCain – but it IS saying alot about her.
So if these mental midgets and detached personality are the best that moderate Republica can field … I’m feeling pretty good about now.
Embrace Megan McCain – everyone knows she’s an airhead – let her paint the moderates with her ignorance.

Slu,
I don’t know why you’re writing about this punk. It’s fun/easy to smack BetaBoy around with the accusation that it’s for “unique visitors at $75,000/month”, but I wouldn’t suppose you have a cut of the 75 large.
Sure, she wears black (it’s slimming!), but she is a ditz from Columbia who’s never worked a day in her life. She has less functional experience than Obama, which I didn’t think was even possible, and it would not appear that she can match Paris’s sex life or appeal, if that’s where you are going (again – that’s where BetaBoy went, so I’m just trying to keep it real here).
And … oh, good Lord … Eminem? She’s got the maturity of a junior high girl.

She doesn’t want a big tent party. She just wants to attack and ridicule those who are more conservative than her. She expects everyone to agree with her or else be marginalized. That is my problem with her.
A venomous witch that one.

I don’t find Ms. McCain interesting, but I do find conservative bloggers’ fascination with her rather odd. How sad is it that the ONLY reason why anyone cares what she says is because of who her dad happens to be. I’d be embarrassed if I was her.
This is a girl who is TRYING to be “cool” (by her own admission). Pathetic. Especially since her definition of “cool” is: “being liked by people who think I’m moron.”

I can do without. If Megan McCain is going to be a leader of a movement, somebody point her toward a cliff. There are plenty of smart conservative women who bust their a** for audience and credibility, and they don’t get the puff treatment this spoiled little moron gets. Go back to the mall Meghan, or get a job.
austinnelly on April 21, 2009 at 10:21 PM
Good Post.
The thing is that if the GOP really did move in the direction that she is advocating it would end up gutting the party because the vast majority of conservatives would simply leave and the GOP would no longer have its base and would no longer be a conservative party but rather some sort of soft core liberal party.
Dreadnought223 on April 21, 2009 at 10:35 PM
Meghan showed herself for what she is. That said, it is abusive to give her such exposure based on ruling-class connections. If J. McCain was any kind of father, he’d put a stop to it. I don’t care that she’s over 18; decency demands that she not be used in this way.
Forget it. He doesn’t have sense. If the Bushes can do it, heh-heh, why can’t the McCains? Meghan should stop trashing the Karl Rove and hire him.
Feedie on April 21, 2009 at 10:53 PM
This.
If the Republicans become like McCain wants, the Republican party will be dead. They’ll never win another Southern state. McCain lost VA and NC (first time in Meghan’s lifetime a D has won NC – good job there you trend setter). If they go further, they’ll lose GA, FL, and on down. . . all the while the D party will blame the R party for anything bad that happens to the country.

That anyone gives a rat’s patootie what this child thinks, says, or “tweets” is an indication of the deterioration of civil discourse in our society.
`
In any rational world, Miss McCain would be instructed to grow the hell up before she began sharing her “opinions” with the rest of us.
`
Her weight, looks, and IQ are all irrelevant. She’s a kid. She’s not demonstrated herself to be a prodigy in any field, so why isn’t she posting mindless personal thoughts on Facebook instead of subjecting us to them?

Speedwagon82 on April 22, 2009 at 3:29 AM
Since the election we have seen the rise of anti-conservative “conservative” commentators. And each one of them have been openly pro-Obama policy and have suggested that the GOP move to the Left in order to become relevant again.
Folks, we’ve been infiltrated. Without trying to sound too much like a conspiracy theorist, I fear we have Manchurian Candidates in our midst.

Actually, while I don’t always agree with everything they say, I do respect the creators of South Park because they have no sacred cows. Everything is fair game. I even find myself laughing at things on the show that I know I really shouldn’t find amusing. But they are talented enough to pull it off most of the time.
Used to like Family Guy, but lately it has been very skewed on the Conservative bashing. As someone that has done a little bit of comedy writing, bashing on Christians, Conservatives, and Republicans is taking the easy way out, as in some circles it has become socially accepted. The same with working blue. Much more difficult to write clean humor. Or to write humor that makes fun of the uncommon targets. Someone like Russel Brand wanted to show some real talent, he would make fun of liberals and the Hollywood establishment and make them laugh at themselves.
As for Meghan McCain, she seems like a nice enough kid, but reminds me of some of my daughters acquaintances from school that suffer a bit from low self esteem. They will do anything they think will gain them acceptance with the popular crowd. Even if it is something they will regret when they are older. Coming from where she did, she was probably sheltered and did not mature emotionally as quickly as others her age.
coyoterex on April 22, 2009 at 3:45 AM
The scorn people have for her is only about 20% because of her positions, and 80% because she’s a stupid, fake attention whore. Honestly, I wouldn’t care if the GOP adopted her stances (except that it would mean losing elections a la John McCain), but this sneering pretense at being better than the hoi polloi is the same nonsense we get and got from the mouth breathers like Noonan and Buckley before they voted for the Messiah (and before they discovered that – gasp – the hillbillies were right about him!). It’s worse though: unlike them, Chubs McCain has zero claim to the erudite, Ivy League sensibility that at least explained away Buckley. McCain is just aping it to be cool with her liberal friends.

Personally I see no need to post anything about Meghan McCain. This isn’t a pop culture site is it?
rcl on April 22, 2009 at 6:17 AM
Yeah she is the classic “moderate” independent who skews right on a couple of things and left on the rest. That’s fine because there are a lot of people out there like her. She see’s eminem and glosses over “nail palin”, it never really registers for her. Same with Brand, the hate is glossed over and discarded and I’m sure she just cant see what the fuss is about.
I was like that too before I became “politically aware” as I like to call it. Of course as the daughter of a Senator you’d think she would be a bit less naive, but on the other hand I almost envy her and miss that time where I was blissfully ignorant of the partisan hate. In truth many times people make more of things than are there too, so there is that.

I really don’t see where commenting on anyones weight is going to help anyone prove their point. Having said that, she is wrong to call herself a Republican and the party should totally reject her. I get the feeling she does like the media attention and perhaps she’s more afraid of the vitriol that would come from the left if she espoused conservative values. In any case, she doesn’t seem to have a clue what being conservative is about, but that’s not too surprising really considering who her father is.

The MSM must have found her in the Useful Tool Box
She is not there to convert conservatives, she is there to prove there are no more conservatives, part of the ‘Redefining the GOP’ strategy, which did not originate on the left but came from RNC country
J. McCain really needs to redefine the GOP fast since his gimmick to purchase Hispanic votes didn’t pay off
