Update: A victory for the children of St. Louis

Two weeks ago I wrote over at the AIP about a lawsuit filed against the St. Louis Public School District. The suit demanded that the District remove deed restrictions imposed on the sale of its old school buildings, restrictions which prevented charter and private schools from using the properties… for 100 years.

Last night, the District acquiesced.

In reversing itself, the SAB decided that the restriction would be lifted as of June 30, 2009…not soon enough for three new public charter schools that had hoped to score an old SLPS property.

KIPP Academy, the St. Louis Language Immersion Schools and Grand Community School have all found other buildings to purchase or lease for their openings in fall 2009.

The District’s attempt to curtail St. Louis students’ educational options was contemptible, but its reversal is more than welcome.

If KIPP Academy is the charter school I read about a few months ago, it’s a shame that SAB tried to keep them out of the area.

It’s a charter that focuses on making the rules clear to the students and teachers and enforcing them. They have been having great success teaching children from the worst parts of various inner cities. They don’t skim the cream of the crop students (at least not at the one I read about in Philly). The kids get selected by a lottery. The students have an extended school day, school week (they attend a shortened day on Saturday) and school year.

The children of St. Louis will greatly benefit from having KIPP Academy in their area.

Jacksonville is in the competition for a KIPP Academy. It would be so great for this area.

I cheer every victory for alternatives to Publik Skool, no matter how small. A few more young minds that will be receive an honest-to-goodness education in a scholarly environment instead of liberal brainwashing in a glorified holding pen.
