The Somali Pirates Are Turning Into The Left’s Useful Idiots

If ever there were poster children for the term “useful idiots,” the Somali pirates would be it. They just don’t know it yet.

For years, Somali pirates have run amok off the east coast of Africa, taking advantage of private shipping companies, and taking various non-U.S. nationals captive. With wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and no direct threat to the U.S., the G.W. Bush administration took little action against the pirates directly. Military action in east Africa was directed at al-Qaeda elements.

One would think, with all the hullabaloo voiced by liberal Democrats about how the Iraq war was unjustified because Saddam Hussein posed no direct threat to the territory of U.S., that the left would want to continue the Bush policy notwithstanding the Maersk incident. After all, the non-lethal attack on a single ship and the taking of a single hostage hardly compare to Saddam’s rape of Kuwait, violation of the ceasefire agreement, almost daily firing on U.S. planes operating under U.N. authority, theft of billions of dollars from the “oil-for-food” program to bribe U.N. and European officials, use of poison gas, suppression of the majority religious group, and oh yeah, the mass murder of Iraqis and day-to-day reign of terror.

But no, the Somali pirates need to be taught a lesson. Let’s go gettem is the emerging Obama administration policy, at least if this New York Times article is to be believed:

President Obama vowed on Monday to “halt the rise of piracy” off the coast of Africa, foreshadowing a longer and potentially more treacherous struggle to come, a day after Navy snipers rescued an American merchant-ship captain held hostage on the Indian Ocean….

“I want to be very clear that we are resolved to halt the rise of piracy in that region,” Mr. Obama said. “And to achieve that goal, we’re going to have to continue to work with our partners to prevent future attacks. We have to continue to be prepared to confront them when they arise. And we have to ensure that those who commit acts of piracy are held accountable for their crimes.”

And what might it take to stop all piracy off the east coast of Africa? Surely attacks on land-based training camps, villages, and other facilities which support the pirates, with loss of civilian life. According to Bloomberg news, while there are no plans for an invasion, the “U.S. military is considering attacks on pirate bases on land and aid for the Somali people to help stem ship hijackings off Africa’s east coast, defense officials said.”

In other words, if need be we will use 21st century weapons against guys in small boats who just want to provide for their families in a place thousands of miles from the U.S. Couldn’t this all be avoided if instead of attacking people who pose no direct threat to the territory of the U.S., we just stayed out of their neighborhood?

This narrative, needless to say, is asinine. The freedom of the seas is in the U.S.’s national interest. But the narrative parallels the left-wing’s narrative of Iraq, although in a much less compelling manner.

Yet how have those on the left reacted to Obama’s emerging “cowboy” actions in Somalia? Mostly with silence.

Those who are talking, are using the incident show that Obama really is up to the task of being Commander-in-Chief. Witness this post by a well-known blogger practically brimming with pride in Obama’s machismo and castigating those who claimed that Obama “could prove unwilling or unable to harness military might when necessary”:

And that’s a meme that just… doesn’t exist beyond some of the more fevered conservative imaginations. And not even that many fevered conservative imaginations! Since Obama came to office, he announced the deployment of 17,000 new troops to Afghanistan; expanded the scope of U.S. strategy in that war to include Pakistan; and then announced an expansive recommitment to both countries. His CIA director unequivocally announced, in public, that drone strikes are going to continue in Pakistan.

He’s winding down the Iraq war in a way that has the support from the commanding general. Obama is, accordingly, being accused by some of being a warmonger. (And let’s not forget that Obama chose the risky option of parachuting the SEAL team into the theater and having them work their ninja skills on the pirates to rescue Phillips. That suggests someone with not just a comfort level with using force, but an ability to distinguish between wise and unwise applications of it.)

It’s a stale trope of the media that a president who opposed the Iraq war is a rigid antiwar ideologue, but one unlikely to die from lack of evidence. “I don’t oppose to all
wars,” Obama famously told a 2002 rally against invading Iraq. “What I am opposed to is a dumb war.” Fancy that.

But is attacking the Somali pirates, even without a full-scale invasion, a smart or dumb war? Well if you accept the left-wing narrative of Iraq, then it would be a dumb war. But if you need to have Obama solidify his military credentials, then the Somali pirates are just the useful idiots the left needs.

No large scale invasion needed, just some firepower used out of camera range to prove The One is The Man. And on to health care reform, saving the planet, and wealth-redistribution.

Kind of like trolls to HA are useful idiots. They prove their hypocrisy, depravity and ignorance with each comment.

Obama’s bravado is calculated. In December a US sponsored resolution was unanimously approved by the security council, creating multi-national Consolidated Task Force 151. The arrival of the USS Boxer in March with a full compliment of combat forces (1,400 marines, 1,100 sailors, a full compliment of helicopter and UAV air assets, a beach control unit and amphibious assault vehicles) signals the US is done compiling intel on the land activities of the pirate clans and families.

Look for more presidential tough talk as the Navy has already begun planning land operations to take out pirate bases and villages. There will probably be civilian casualties because they are clans and families, but the world will not care much.

Interesting that Europe paid off the Barbary Coast pirates for centuries, and it was Jefferson who led the creation of a deep water Navy specifically to deal with the pirates, in part due to payments (ransom and tribute) to the Barbary states consuming so much of the budget of the still young country. 20% of United States government annual spending for 1800 was to the Barbary pirates.

I think it is a bad idea to get involved in a ground commitment.

As others have mentioned, perhaps we can put the pressure on with airpower, but I am afraid that if we engage the pirates, and their allies AQ and Ash-Shabaab, the situation will devolve into a larger scale counter-terrorism operation not only in Somalia, but into parts of Ethiopia.

Furthermore, I fear that a ground situation would quickly become a nation-building one. With two of those going on now, and one going only “so-so,” America cannot afford a third.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for putting the pressure on the Jihadist Pirates, AQ, and Shabaab. I’m all for more pressure on AQ’s Islamic Committee in the Maghreb, too.

But no ground ops. Not yet!

I think we’d be looking at Boxer based strikes, with the beach director unit mainly there to make sure everyone gets in and out efficiently and there’s plenty of needed support supply for the Marines on the sand.

Boxer is not fitted out for a permanent land invasion, rather for ground interdiction, This would be specifically to kill pirates and leave. CTF151 does not have a nation building mission brief.

I see two options:
1 – We put snipers on all our ships, so if pirates threaten to attack, they can get picked off one by one as if by magic. This could be viewed as a “Hand of Allah” thing if sold just the right way.

2 – We get President Obama to call up one of his many “half-relatives” to tell them to knock it the hell off with the pirate activity, and everything calms down. The added benefit is that it would make “Billy Beer” Carter seem even more ridiculous in terms of extended presidential family members.

I have a preference for option #1 though.

Everything needs to be done to put an end to the piracy in that region. I have been following this since October when a friend from Dubai informed me about the hijacking of a ship that was full of arms headed to the Middle East. That kind of shipment in those hands is not a good thing.

This situation involves most other nations. I think this is the first USA ship that has been hijacked. Regardless of this fact, this should be a no tolerance situation. We are talking about the hijacking of the merchant navy who are unarmed individuals. They need the fullest protection from these thugs. It is also about the fact that these thugs demand a ransom. The money does not go to feeding hungry people in Somalia. It goes into the building up of arms in Somalia and elsewhere. Look for the Al Qaeda connection in this incident.

Once a ship is hijacked there should be no negotiation with the pirates. The world navies should take over and there should be an all out effort to put an end to the piracy and by force.

Normally, I would not be so proactive in advocating the use of force, but after I read about the kind of shipping that the pirates are hijacking and the complications that comes from them getting hold of certain materials, I do believe that force is the only way to deal with them now and in the future.

I don’t care who kills jihadists and where they kill them. Just kill them all!

I hate to be critical on opening day, but I think you’re assuming facts not in evidence here. In spite of BO’s willingness to take full credit for the successful outcome of the pirate standoff, nothing he’s done or said suggests anything like a “cowboy” strategy.

Indeed, based on what I’ve read, I’m inclined to think the successful resolution of this crisis came about IN SPITE of the WH strategy, not because of it.

I say bring back gun boat diplomacy like TR did with the caveat of blatantblue’s worry about it devolving into nation building. I agree blatantblue, we don’t want to build another nation.

Silverblade, the USMC started as sharpshooters and repellers of boarders for the Navy, wore leather collars to help keep their heads from being chopped off, hence the name “Leathernecks”. Perhaps it might be a good idea to put a few on ships in that area.

I’m so happy that our brave fearless leader was able to harness the might of our great navy to defeat 4 sixteen year olds with AK’s. It only took him four days! If this is ignored by the comedians then there’s no hope.

Somebody do the math and let’s see how many hours per enemy the Iraq war has taken.

Our president is a wimpering snotbag and the faster we all realize it the better off we’ll be.

If Bush had given the order, the left would have criticized him for escalating the situation and creating more violent kidnappers. The left is well known for being consistent … consistently unhinged.

Oh, it’s already begun about the downtrodden Somalis, poisoned and starved by evil Western powers. Click only if you have a strong stomach for far left fantasy poppycock.

It seems the rule law on the high seas is being ignored in favor of UN resolutions.

I don’t care for shooting galleries, but we got them.
We got to deal with them.
