Report: 3 or 4 new missiles on launch pad in NK; NBC: Another ICBM being prepped

Fox broke in a few minutes ago with the news, citing an AP report which in turn cited a newspaper in South Korea. Nothing on the wires yet, but here’s something buried in a Fox report from earlier today:

A senior Bush administration official told FOX News that North Korea had more missiles ready for launch, noting that two of Wednesday’s missile firings “weren’t launched from the facility we expected, but from the coast.”

And get this:

In Russia, Interfax quoted the army chief of staff, Gen. Yuri Baluyevsky as saying the number of missiles fired by North Korea could be higher than the six cited by the U.S., Japan and South Korea.

“According to various data, 10 missiles were launched. Some say that these were missiles of various classes; however, some claim that all missiles were intercontinental,” Baluyevsky was quoted as saying in the Russian Far East city of Chita.

Not to go all Loose Change on you, but why would the Russian chief of staff exaggerate the number of missiles? Russia’s resisting sanctions; the more dangerous the situation gets, the less tenable their position is.

Could those in the know be downplaying the severity of the provocation to avoid having to respond militarily? And if Kim is willing to go this far to get attention, how much further will he go?

Tune in tomorrow — same Bat time, same Bat channel!

Update: Here we go. Short- to medium-range, allegedly.

Update: I spoke too soon. NBC says they’re prepping another Taepodong, although it’s not yet on the pad.

Maybe the rockets will tip over this time?

I would like to see satalite footage of a Taepodong blowing up on the pad right after fueling. Maybe a tech will pick a bad time to light that cigarette…

A man can dream, can’t he?

“Tower to Mechanical Failure… your cleared for Takeoff…”

“Hey… Airman Schumakateli… that laser warmed up yet…. click… MF to tower… wilco…”

If we were shooting the missiles down with some high tech equipment, would the milatary let us know? Assuming that the only people involved with operation “Mechanical Failure” are true patriots who would kick the NYT reportes arse if they were snooping around we might never know… And thats the way it should be.

Lets hope for more Mechanical Failures… Or maybe a screwed up targeting resolution that drops a taepdong into China…

I’ve heard this is the Type-Of-Dong missile that flies for less then 10seconds

I hope they fire some our way and we show the world how ahead of his time Ronald Reagan was. Blast ‘em outta the sky and show the footage to the world. Imagine how sad the anchors of our nightly news casts will be when (if) they report it.

Dubya will leave this one for President Rice.

I think Kim is attempting to “salvo fire” the missiles in an attempt to increase the possibility that the Taepodong-2 can be tested without the US shooting it down.

The theory being that we run out of interceptors before he runs out of Taepodong-2s.

Unfortunately (for him — and his chief rocket scientist), the first go-around failed because it only flew for 35 seconds.

If subsequent tests don’t do better, I’d hate to be the chief rocketeer….

The state funeral for Chief Rocketeer will be held tomorrow at 12:00 Noon
