Speaking of people who get press for being offensive, Shirley Phelps-Roper turned up on “The Big Story” this weekend for an interview with Julie Banderas. The smackdown was promptly laid, and lo, the people rejoiced. Thanks to Jay Stephenson of Stop the ACLU for the tip.

How’s that lawsuit coming, I wonder.

Blowback

The Phelps family LIVES for the attention. Stop giving it to them.

Moto Oda on June 12, 2006 at 8:51 AM

Look our O-Really! I could watch her all the live long day!

Dread Pirate Roberts VI on June 12, 2006 at 8:56 AM

Arguing with the woman is itself an embarrassment. There is no benefit to be gained. Talk about a zero value target! I agree with Moto Oda; no coverage at all is best.

Gayle on June 12, 2006 at 9:09 AM

I’m sorry to disagree Gayle, but after dozens of HBM (Has Been Media) puff pieces, this woman needed to be taken to task and publicly flogged.

As a rule, we’re too damn nice to people like this and I, for one, think Julie did a wonderful showing her for what she is, a wing nut in need of a lube job!!

Dread Pirate Roberts VI on June 12, 2006 at 9:29 AM

That was painful. I may need to take the rest of the day off just to recuperate.

GPE on June 12, 2006 at 9:38 AM

GO JULIE !!!!! This POS Phelps woman and others like her are an insult to free speech. The right to express any opinion is basic in our country but this hate-spewing idiot should be charged with abuse of the US Constitution. Not to mention The Bible!

DJ Dubya on June 12, 2006 at 10:10 AM

Uh …. daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.

Wait - a better response: whooooooo hoooooo!

That Julie is a fiesty one, ain’t she? That was indeed quite a smackdown. How refreshing to see the usually staid and reserved media types, who remain bland no matter what hateful piece of garbage they’re talking to, finally let lose with some human emotion.

When people wonder about the difference between librulz and conservatives, here it is: where a librul would have been distantly polite, perhaps exploring the reasons this poor woman is so hateful (probably blaming it on our unfair system of democratic capitalism er somethin’), a conservative looks at an evil douchebag (sorry - no other word fits) and labels she/it as such.

Priceless.

And yeah, we probably ought to ignore these people. Or send some of those biker dudes to silence them permanently.

But I still sure got a kick out of watching that.

Somebody remind me not to piss Julie off. See that fire in her eyes? Mmmm mmm mmmm.

Professor Blather on June 12, 2006 at 10:17 AM

This Phelps thing has an nasty resemblance to the Preacher with the black hat in the movie Poltergeist 2….remember that scary look?…she has it….pure frightening EVIL. Julie Banderas took her to task, though..looked like Snow White and the evil stepmother at a mud fight. Julie was great, but I think she needs a few pointers from Ann Coulter on how to zing back. Go, Julie…ya done good!!!

Now if only the MSM would take on those kooks who worship a sci-fi author. The cultist of scientology. When will they ever get a good agressive questioning?

roninacreage on June 12, 2006 at 10:38 AM

…and this is how human smegma is dealt with.

Kid from Brooklyn on June 12, 2006 at 10:44 AM

I’m getting the impression that Ms. Banderas doesn’t like Ms. Phelps. Anyone getting that vibe?

Kevin M on June 12, 2006 at 10:54 AM

I loved it! Julie gave her a serious smackdown. She was probably expecting to be handled with kid gloves like she would’ve been on CNN, et al.

StephC on June 12, 2006 at 11:01 AM

What is up with that Klingon head piece?

DannoJyd on June 12, 2006 at 1:19 PM

Just about a painful as listening to Jerry Falwell blaming 911 on feminists, gays and lesbians. Of course, he really didn’t mean it, but he did say it. If Pat Robertson can leg press 2000 pound weight, then why can’t he push his foot up this moonbat’s A$$?

They are all out there and revolving around Uranus. Klingons are much better looking, besides…

Kini on June 12, 2006 at 2:34 PM

I love Julie!! She’s my newest American hero!

Richard Davis on June 12, 2006 at 2:35 PM

I’m a Christian-Christ has nothing to do with the Phelps cult.
It’s just a personality cult, much like David Koresh or, going back a bit, Jim Jones. Phelps and family are sham zealots and shameful human beings.

Doug on June 12, 2006 at 2:45 PM

Give Julie her own nightly show! Move over Orielly!

gator70 on June 12, 2006 at 2:45 PM

I agree with the first two posters.

Their picketing of funerals is dispicable, but the media attention they get only encourages them to do more. Most of the church leaders and spokes-people are lawyers. They relish and thrive on lawsuits in court, and seek to goad people to sue them as much for publicity as for sport.

The people of Topeka have learned to ignore them for the most part, and beeing ignored is what they most dislike. But I think this time they have gone too far.

The Phelp’s cult has a message, a message of pure hate. Their message is all Law with no Gospel. God hates everyone and everything, except them and what they believe. Please show me in the Bible where it says God is a God of hate? They have come to hate even themselves. This is reflected in the wrought iron fenced compound in which they lock up their church building, even flying an upside down American and Canadian flag.

These people only deserve our pity.

Lawrence on June 12, 2006 at 3:28 PM

Haha, that was crazy to watch.

Did Julie say, “If you believe in the Bible then you’re going to Hell”?

ryan on June 12, 2006 at 3:28 PM

I never liked Julie and her new show that tries to be exactly like Greta van Sustran…

… but now I may have to give it another look.

Enoxo on June 12, 2006 at 4:44 PM

*********************************************

I think you are correct… she did say some weird things - she didn’t have her thoughts together.

I think a producers was egging her on… after all, the producer wasn’t the dancing monkey.

Anyhow, I’m torn concerning the Felps clan. I personally witnessed Mr. Felps or one of his Senior men get assaulted at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor back in 2002.

It was a horrible experience and all at the hands of “tolerant - ‘the new tolerance’ - liberals”. They threw pies and cakes on the religious as they peacefully protested.

I always mention this story and I’m floored everytime people ask me “Who was it?”. Who cares!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No one should be attacked. Geez.

Anyhow, I’m torn on this subject because I think the soldiers just need to put up with it and “Enact!!!” some legislation or pay for private ceremonies.

People in general are too stupid to get involved in politics, Alas.

I’m young but I volunteer with old people on Election day. Get involved!

Btw, this is a free country.

ar_basin on June 12, 2006 at 5:04 PM

And God simply smiled.

dman on June 12, 2006 at 5:04 PM

Yeah, but would she, Julie, do the same with liberal nutcases Dean, Murtha, Kerry, etc? Naw, only if the person can be classifed as a radical right-winger will you see media personalities foaming from the mouth. Fricken hypocrits.

docdave on June 12, 2006 at 6:05 PM

@ Vanya: Hello Troll.

@ Lawrence: Driven down Gage before too I take it? =)

Moto Oda on June 12, 2006 at 8:22 PM

GOD BLESS JULIE BANDARES. She is the greatest. FOX needs to give her a raise and a promotion, maybe her own program. We need more news people to stand up to scum the way that she did.

immigration inspectr on June 12, 2006 at 9:32 PM

Phelps, the insane hateful arrogant woman who hurts the families of our fallen Troops deserved to be yelled at and attacked and Julie did not disappoint.

Julie did, what we all want to do, she gave that hatful evil woman a vicous verbal attack and I THANK YOU JULIE!!

The bitch Phelps is ugly, looks like a cross between a scarecrow and Mia Farrow.

Richard Davis on June 12, 2006 at 10:21 PM

I’m tired of people judging other people in the name of Christianity. It is not our job to judge. The bible says very specifically to be tolerant of others and their sins. If you do a word study of tolerant to the original greek it means patient. We should be patient with others and pray they are patient with us. It also states very clearly in the bible that one sin is the same as another. God is the judge. We have no say so. I am bothered by all of this protesting though. I am trying not to be a hypocrite. I believe in free speech but this just floors me. How one group can be so harsh in the name of God brings me to tears. Me and a few other Marines in my last platoon spent five hours cleaning up the remains of one of our own so nothing not one bit of him would be left behind. The thought of washing him onto the ground was troubling to all of us. We wanted to send all of him home to his mother. It bothers me to think that back on the other end of the world people would think so little of that man in the box.
