Breaking: Senate votes for cloture on immigration bill

73-25. According to Fox, all 25 no votes came from Republicans. I’ll post the roll once it’s available.

I’m a bit hazy on the procedure here. Cloture passed, but Frist said a few minutes ago that they’ll be considering further amendments later today.

In the meantime, a motion to kill the McConnell amendment — which, horrors, would require photo ID in order to vote in federal elections — was thankfully denied. The vote? 49-48. I’ll have that roll, too. Update: They didn’t kill it — but did it die of natural causes? See below.

In the meantime, Lou Dobbs is trying to stay calm. And failing.

Update: While we wait, Vicente Fox says no preguntas, por favor; Rasmussen explains why there’s a state dinner for Fox in Sacramento tomorrow night; and domestic farmers claim immigrant vegetable-pickers are twice as efficient as citizen workers — but it’s not what you think.

Update: Olbermann fave Dana Milbank profiles Jeff Sessions. Does Milbank begin with an anecdote about Sessions’s Confederate ancestors? Of course he does.

Update: Fox addressed a crowd of immigrants yesterday in Utah. Emphasis mine:

In his speech to the crowd of immigrants, Fox spent as much time praising them and urging them not to forget Mexico as he did talking about immigration.

That reflects Mexico’s dependence on its migrants, who send an estimated $20 billion home annually, making them the nation’s biggest industry after petroleum.

“Over there, we wait for you with open arms,” Fox told the crowd. “Your family is over there. Your family that appreciates and loves you. Your home is over there.

Update: An hour has passed and the roll still hasn’t been posted. Ehud Olmert is addressing a joint session of Congress right now so that might be why. More reading, then: the L.A. Times says the House isn’t budging on its own immigration bill, while WaPo quotes a few Congressional Republicans as saying a compromise with the Senate is possible only if Bush throws his full weight behind it. Assuming he has any weight left to throw, that is.

Update: The AP says the McConnell amendment is probably dead anyway: “On a vote of 49-48, opponents failed to kill the measure. But it remained in limbo, evidently doomed by arcane rules that took effect once the Senate voted to limit debate.”

Who would oppose something as innocuous as requiring photo ID to vote? Guess.

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., likened the proposal to a poll tax or a requirement for voters to pass a literacy test. “Now is not the time and this is not the place to consider an amendment that may disenfranchise a million or more poor, minority, disabled, and elderly voters - all of them American citizens,” he said.

Update: The rolls have finally been posted, and they were worth the wait. The vote to kill the McConnell amendment was almost party-line. Four Republicans — Chafee, Sununu, Voinovich, and Mike DeWine — crossed the aisle. As for cloture, Fox was correct when it said all the no’s came from Republicans. Read ‘em and weep.

Members of the “U.S. Senate” ought to pack their suitcases and reconvene in Mexico City, where they belong!

Ditto that, ForYourEdification.

As for Dobbs, I no longer watch Fox News from 6:00-7:00pm. I’m Dobb’s all the way. Besides going to Mexico City, Congress can go to Hell on the way.

The rest of the world must surely be laughing at us. The American people demand one thing, Congress just does what it wants. So much for our deomcratic republic.

I can’t wait to read the part where they explain how these New and Improved laws are not going to become “broken and unenforceable” like the last bunch of laws they passed.

I think it is our (conservative) turn to face what ” the steady course” is…. Damn November is gonna suck for this congress.

JVelez on May 24, 2006 at 11:07 AM

Here is what the politicos are afraid of: millions of illegal aliens, suddenly insecure, could raid, plunder, and steal their way back across the border — why leave empty-handed? A massive crime wave just before a major election? I live in Texas, and I can see the coming crisis on the faces of the migrants.

Veritas Regina on May 24, 2006 at 11:09 AM

I am so enraged I can’t see straight. We need to keep the pressure on and not give up. I’m afraid that they are waiting for us to forget and then they will pass an”amnesty” bill in the middle of the night. The sovereignty of America is under assault and we must never stop the pressure. I will be voting on one issue in Nov.,”illegal” immigration. If any politician, Democrat or Republican is against amnesty, they have my vote.

donna on May 24, 2006 at 11:17 AM

well where I live its Sen.Allen (hopefully future prez) YES Senator Warner NO

JVelez on May 24, 2006 at 11:25 AM

Cloture. Unbelievable. Our distinguished Senate lacks the testicular fortitude to invoke cloture in the midst of a life-and-death judicial battle, but rams it through in order to approve the continued violation of our borders and our sovereignty.

I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face (looks like I’ve hit the pipe again, AP):
Senators accountable to their own State houses as intended by the Constitution would not have sold us down the Rio Grande as has this current lot.

Stop the madness.

Repeal the 17th.

What is wrong with requiring a photo ID?

The people better wake up and realize that we are being invaded by a foreign country. In Southern California the Democratic Party is openly registering Illegals to vote.

Antonio Villagarosa a former gang member and reconquista advocate is now the Mayor of Los Angeles. He gives his speeches in Spanish.

Bob Dornan was thrown out of office by Loretta Sanchez, an anchor baby, in Orange County by Illegal absentee ballots cast by Mexicans.

The Senate is ignoring their oath of office and committing Treason. They are selling out American for cheap foreign labor and destroying the middle class.

Jeff Sessions is one of the few Senators that has pointed out that this Immigration Bill is an Amnesty Fraud.

Call your Senators today. Voice your outrage.

OH NOES! El Presidente Fox is a racist for telling them their home is back in Mexico! Call the ACLU! Quick, summon the reconquistas crowd for a march!

Enoxo on May 24, 2006 at 11:31 AM

Our only hope is that this nightmare of a bill is fixed in the house. Or, better yet, just scrap the whole thing and enforce the laws we already have. I’m just stunned silly by our congress. what a bunch of morons.

pullingmyhairout on May 24, 2006 at 11:33 AM

does anyone have the link to the roll call so we can see how the senators voted?

pullingmyhairout on May 24, 2006 at 11:39 AM

Every last one of those senators days are officially numbered
We don’t forget this vote and the others on immigration and when it comes time for them to be ‘re-elected’ they will fail. This is the same principle that caused Dashle and (hopefully) Harry Reid to fail; when you don’t represent the wishes of your voters instead kow-towing to the beltway or lobbyists or any number of other groups, you pay with your job!

Defector01 on May 24, 2006 at 11:58 AM

I keep hearing how “We can’t deport twelve million illegal aliens!”
But since we didn’t import them [they did it all by themselves] is this even a valid subject or objection?
If the barriers were higher, the costs of being discovered greater, and the rewards for criminal behavoir reduced, would not the same individuals decide to export themselves?

Lamonte Thomas on May 24, 2006 at 12:05 PM

Before this immigration fiasco is finished there’ll be blood in the streets. God help us all. If we get the legislation we need does anyone think those punks who marched and waved their stinking Mexican flags will leave quietly? The longer we dither away at this the worse it will be because there will be more of them to fight. The Second Amendment is a wonderful thing, even my pacifist wife has said she’ll learn to shoot whatever gun I bring home.

The segue from the first paragraph to the rest of the Milbank/Sessions article is the clumsiest thing I’ve read in a while. *What* does Antietam have to do with anything? Racism, I guess. I guess that’s what the headline’s supposed to mean, too: he’s being emotional, not rational, unlike the other side.

And Milbank sure makes it clear he’s a sputtering, frothing loon: “Colossal error . . . absolute scandal . . . budget buster . . . fiscal disaster . . . catastrophe.”

The McConnell amendment is a meaningless gesture because illegal aliens would simply have to present a driver’s license to vote, which they can get regardless of their immigration status. No one at the DMV checks. Nothing is going to stop illegal immigration with an enforcement approach.

As I write this during my lunch hour, outside the Fairfax County, VA (a large county in the Washington suburbs) government building, there are dozens of illegals doing landscaping work. During renovations last year, a Fairfax County employee, whose job is to procure labor for jobs at County property, went to the Annandale 7-11 to hire workers, the way he claimed always to get his workers. Therefore, at taxpayer expense, illegals are being hired on a day to day basis. How on earth can anyone in their right mind claim that illegals are “working in the shadows?”

The only people “in the shadows” are President Bush and Congress. I absolutely will not vote for anyone voting for this sham immigration bill.

januarius on May 24, 2006 at 12:39 PM

Only our illustrious Senators can take an idea which can be summed up in about 4 sentences and spread it out over 600 plus pages thereby masking any attempt by an ordinary citizen to discern what it is exactly that is contained in the bill. Right now I don’t think it the House of Representatives in this country that is the problem but rather it is the Senate.
I am a strong advocate of throwing out the incumbents in this years election where possible. If you want to replace a Republican with another Republican or a Democrat with a Democrat then vote for the challengers this year. The American people have the instrument of change in our hands and it is high we exercised that power.
As far as the photo ID here in GA we have been going round and round over that issue for a couple years now. Everytime they manage to pass a law in regards to requiring it the ACLU, Rainbow Coalition, NAACP and all of these other liberal groups file lawsuits until they get a sympathetic judge who throws the law out. It is now a fact of life that a single judge can undo the wishes of the majority of people. GA just recently had a constitutional amendment against gay marriage thrown out by a judge even though about 74% of the people of the state voted for it.
But I am wandering here. We need to keep apprised of what is in this bill that the Senate is trying to pass. I don’t like the term compromise or comprehensive either. I don’t think Col Travis was familiar with those terms when he was defending the Alamo and buying time for this fledgling country to repel the invaders.

LakeRuins on May 24, 2006 at 12:50 PM

I hope the McConnell amendment was added to the bill, and helps the bill to fail. Granted, I want voter identification, but if it gets the Democrats and RINOs up in a frenzy to fail the miserable legislation, I’m all for it happening.

Enoxo on May 24, 2006 at 12:53 PM

Regarding using drivers licenses as ID there are currently 7 states which give illegal aliens drivers licenses. In the very near future the TSA and most airlines will no longer accept licenses from those states as proof of ID. The states are MD, NC, MI, WI, WA, OR, CA.

LakeRuins on May 24, 2006 at 12:55 PM

I’d like to congratulate every law-breaker in America and across the world, especially in Mexico City and all the latino capitals, without forgetting the “brothers” in the Arab world, South-East Asia, the Qoqaz and Central Asia for their outstanding accomplishment and the brilliant results they achieved by convincing a large majority of the United States Senate to pass a bill forgiving all law-breakers already residing in America, and extending Amnesty for future and potential law-breakers and terrorists who wish to cross the open U.S. borders, from the South and the North, but especially from Washington D.C.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Schumer was just bloviating about how his parents were immigrants who came here without advanced education–his father was an exterminator and he is a senator, and how great this makes America at the diversity.

To Schumer I say, as of now, there is no difference between an exterminator and a senator.

Let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. I will not throw out all the Republicans, only the ones who are for “illegal’ immigration. This is not A Democrat or Republican issue. It’s for the survival of our country and I know alot of hard working middle-class Democrats who are just as enraged as we are. I would not want to put a Democrat who would sign this immigration bill in a second just to punish an incumbent Republican who is against amnesty.

donna on May 24, 2006 at 1:33 PM

My problem is I ain’t sure what they have voted on if anything. I only know that the senate is trying to hide an amnesty package or language in the bill so cleverly disguised that only Indiana Jones can locate it and figure out its true meaning.

LakeRuins on May 24, 2006 at 1:34 PM

Donna,
I echo your sentiments because the other big issue is National Security and there is no way I want the cut and run Democrats in charge of provideing for my security. I am all for replacing a Republican with another Republican that you think better represents your views but in no case would I swap an (R) for a (D).

LakeRuins on May 24, 2006 at 1:37 PM

What’s going with me today, I keep on forgetting things.

I’d like to extend my warmest congratulations to the Democratic Party and its affiliates in the Islamic World beginning from Al Qaeda and Al Jahzeera and ending with the remote islamic minority living in China for their successful Jihad against the United States with the blessing of her hardworking Senators who don’t spare a second defending the interests of Allah, Islamic Jihad and the Mujahideen.

May Allah curse the Infidels and bring death and destruction to America! InshaAllah!

CatholicConservative on May 24, 2006 at 1:39 PM

LakeRuins & Donna:

Exactly! In my opinion our National Security trumps all else. And, yes, I fully realize our borders are a major weak link.

We need to replace (R)s with (R)s, and I hoping that there are some out there who see this huge swell of public outrage and will rise up and actually do the will of those they represent.

techno_barbarian on May 24, 2006 at 1:54 PM

Kramer I wish I lived in Texas to protest with you. If only the American middle class could organize and protest in the streets. Boy, could you see the traitor politicians shake in their boots then. But then again we have to work to support the illegal aliens. But it would be a site to see protests of real Americans in our streets.

techno_barbarian on May 24, 2006 at 1:57 PM

Dang, I almost forget to congratulate my Grand Old Party (yeah right!!) for defending America and moving on the right track of granting pardons, lots of pardons, to every law-breaker who crossed illegally the U.S. borders and for extending the pardon to future border-crossers who wish to enter America without waiting in line, because the GOP is the “Party of Compassion” and the President is a “compassionate” man who doesn’t want people to suffer waiting in lines.

So, Congratulations GOP! Good job Senators! See you next time at the polling places.

I will not be surprised if someone from the Senate calls me to go and testify.

After all, that’s among 2 things Senators do:

1 - Taking testimonies and

2 - Appear on the Sunday morning shows.

The rest is superficial, such as granting amnesty to law-breakers.

CatholicConservative on May 24, 2006 at 2:06 PM

Donna:
Yes we average middle class Americans do have to work and probably can’t find the time to protest.
Unless we all were Illegals, then our bosses would offer us the day off and kiss our butts.

MEMORIAL DAY would be a great day to protest for Americans!!!!!!!!!!

I’m sure the Veterans wouldn’t mind, especially since it would be a protest for everything they fought for and hold dear.
Let’s show them our love and pride for this GREAT nation.

MEMORIAL DAY:
Rally in support of past and current Military Personal
Rally in support of “The United States of America”
Rally in support of National Security
Show your support with the American Flag!!!!!!

I miswrote on my comment above. I meant to write that our immigration problems won’t be solved “without” an enforcement approach.

It is amazing how fired up everyone I talk to is about immigration.

There is going to be a serious backlash against Republicans voting for this immigration amnesty bill. People are stating that they simply won’t vote. Of course, the MSM will spin the backlash against Republicans as anger against conservative policies and the war in Iraq and not mention the sentiment against the amnesty bill.

Yo Kramer,

I live north of Dallas and will gladly jump into any public demonstration on Memorial Day. Not only would I get to make my voice heard on immigration, it would also p*** off the liberal friends of my wife’s parents who are coming into town. These folks proclaim themselves to be PROUD liberals and sound just like the type that always give our military the shaft.

My wife already warned me to make nice to them but hey, I can go exercise my first amendment rights can’t I?

I’m a proud Texan. I happen to live in a smallish city kind of near the mexican border on the coast. Beautiful day here, i might add… perfect day for a protest… all those northern media-types would come down here and sweat to death in the already-oppressive Texas heat. (and it’s not even June!! :) )That actually might be a really good way to get rid of them!

Kramer/Pullingmyhairout

I’m in San Diego
Its illegal immigrant central with a mayor, sheriff and border patrol screaming for help and no one’s interested in listening. We’ve been rather successful at this port because we actually patrol, catch and then throw them over the border, but it doesn’t change that plenty still get through and we’re inundated. Bush says they live in the shadows; if they do then why the bleep do I have 2+ dozen illegials coming up to my car everytime I’m at a grocery store or hardware store asking me in spanglish if i have work needed to be done and the police don’t give a rat’s ass?!

Defector01 on May 24, 2006 at 4:23 PM

How can I become an illegal? I want free stuff, I want both parties to make a fuss about me, I want a low interest loan, free healthcare, I want to spread third world diseases and I want products I buy in my language.

crowemate1 on May 24, 2006 at 4:45 PM

The photo ID for voting problem has nothing to do with illegals. It has to do with other minority districts and their mass ‘proxy voting’ activities. The Dems would very likely lose 1% of their ‘lock vote’ if this became law (or a bunch of election workers would have to commit now-verifiable felonious voter fraud).

Mike O on May 24, 2006 at 4:46 PM

Looks like Byrd joined Republicans on the no to cloture vote. Maybe he’s getting sane in his old(er) age.

As for Martinez saying yes to cloture, he just put another notch in not being re-elected to me.

Enoxo on May 24, 2006 at 5:30 PM

Just saw Indiana Congressmen Mike Pence (sic?) vomiting spewing vile and bile on Foxnews. Just this is crazy…
He’s convinced all Illegals here under 2 years( about 16 of them after their friend vouches they’ve been here longer) will GO HOME by themselves. He says his new plan can find them a job in 3-5 days while they are at the border waiting to come IN to America. FOOL.
Even if it had a chance, didnt he think about this? All the illegals on the border have a knapsack and not enough water for a day (we supply that for them) but he thinks A) they’ll leave, and B) wait 5 days in the heat on the Mexican side of the border.
We really need to check the air in the Senate. They’ve lost their minds.

Enoxo, Sen. Byrd is in a tough re-election bid, in conservative-land. It’s not his age/wisdom relationship - it’s his political survival, for more and more pork…

Unrelated, Susan Estridge, the sometimes sane Democrat contributor on FOX, said the other night “…I live in Calif., I know a lot of illegals and they all speak Spanish…”. She must only know the elites, like Mayor Villaraigosa, Lt. Govenor Bustamante, etc.

I guess that all the faxes, letters and phone calls to let our Senators know what the voters, Legal American Citizens, want means nothing to them. Rest assured, I did tell them what I thought.

Interesting:
Cinco de Mayo was more respected than Memorial Day will be!!!!

When did Americans start celebrating battles for other countries?—-
THEY DIDN’T
The illegals are the ones who celebrate Cinco De Mayo……
Fox stressed the issue that they not forget Mexico, their homeland.
They still fly their Flags in disrespect of America.
BUT, it’s only fair that we bend over and take it because America is suppose to give jobs to all these losers from Mexico and various S. American countries.

Start disrespecting them back!!!!!
I’ve already started telling the illegals around my town that they are not welcome.
Stand up for our Nation.
Let’s have a New National Holiday:
TAKE AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT TO THE BORDER DAY.
(Any border will do, then kick their arse out)

Kramer on May 25, 2006 at 8:33 AM

Defector,
I feel your pain. As for all the other comments about Bush and his stand on immigration - i don’t know why all of ya’ll are so surprised. When he was governor here in the great state of Texas, he was known as a moderate republican. His stand on immigration has not changed since then. right or wrong, he makes decisions and sticks with them. He was the first republican governor to win back-to-back elections in Texas, not because he was a “Bush” but because he took a middle of the road stand on just about everything. he appealed to a lot of people here and most were pleased with his governance. But a big difference between Texas and the federal government is that in Texas, it is the Leutinant (sp?) Governor who really holds the power. I think Jorge Bush got in over his head when he went to Washington to play with the big boys. my personal opinion, take it or leave it.

pullingmyhairout on May 25, 2006 at 9:12 AM

Just received an email from Santorum stating, “Today, when the Senate votes on a final immigration reform bill, I cannot support it because it rewards illegal behavior, threatens our social-welfare system, devalues the legal-immigration process, turns illegal immigrants into permanent residents, and fails the test of history.”

Dread Pirate Roberts VI on May 25, 2006 at 12:50 PM

Does anyone else wonder if they are trying to pack as much extraneous crap in as possible just to get a no vote in the end. Then everyone can point to the other side and say “It ain’t my fault he added such and such amendment” while the other side responds in similar fashion but the Dem’s (read Dum’s) get all the press.

I kind of know how this works, and I am not going to say I am any kind of expert or anything, but has anyone done model UN or model Congress. I did back in high school and while I was more center/right at the time I remember fighting with some uber-libs in my “committee” and in the end getting 3 of like 5 or 6 bills passed because we (the right) had enough power to get some amendments, and kill others, but so did the (left) and when all was said and done and we had to send it up for a yes no vote, no one could fully support the bill as a whole. We all pointed fingers to the other side for ruining our legislation (at least I did) to the point that we wouldn’t have anything to show in the full congressional session. (or it got voted down there) It all seems kind of silly, but in the end we didn’t have actual constituents to answer to, we were supposed to research our congress member, and act accordingly. (I got Kyl which now that I know more about him I am glad, and I live in AZ now too which is even better… if we could just get rid of “bane of my existence” McCain)

The point is these guys do have a voting bloc and we are saying no amnesty, as I have been saying for weeks on end now what the president wants and what the Senate is trying to push through is ‘86 again in different wording. If they do it I can only hope that people will get off their collective butts and let them know that is not what we asked for, and if the Senate can’t figure it out, I hope we respond in a resounding “YOU’RE FIRED”.
