You almost have to pity poor Chuck Schumer at a moment like this. Trump, by most accounts, gave the speech of his life last night but Schumer’s job is to make the rounds on television and try to convince people not to believe their lying eyes.

Schumer pretty much had one talking point which he repeated on every network last night and this morning: Trump’s speech doesn’t match reality. “He talks like a populist but the way he’s been governing is totally the opposite,” Schumer told CNN last night.  This morning he told ABC News, “He talks to the working folks of America…but the way he’s governed has been totally with the hard right, special interests against the working people.”

When Schumer brought the same talking point to the Today show, Matt Lauer challenged him saying, “You didn’t find a lot of reasons to stand and cheer, but give me one thing the president said in that speech last night, Senator, where you found yourself saying ‘Yes! I can join him and get behind him on that issue.'”

Schumer shook his head as the question was being asked. He replied, “Well, Matt, here’s the problem. He’s given a whole lot of speeches and we’ve seen that the speeches and the reality don’t match.” He continued, “I’ll say yes when he comes up with something that really helps working people and says I want to work with Democrats…”

“So in an hour, you didn’t hear one thing that you can stand behind this morning?” Lauer interjected.

“I was touched by the mention of the widow of the brave soldier who died in Yemen and things like that, but no,” Schumer replied.

So that’s the final word from the minority leader. In a speech that included a call to continue work on civil rights, to expand paid leave for working mothers, even to make a deal on immigration, Schumer heard nothing he is willing to help with. Here’s the interview from Today:
