Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in London today to meet with Prime Minister Theresa May, praised new sanctions on Iran imposed by President Trump last week and suggested that other responsible nations should follow Trump’s lead.

“Iran seeks to annihilate Israel, it says so openly,” Netanyahu said as cameras clicked away. He continued, “It seeks to conquer the Middle East. It threatens Europe. It threatens the west. It threatens the world and it offers provocation after provocation.

“That’s why I welcome President Trump’s insistence on new sanctions against Iran. I think other nations should follow suit, certainly responsible nations. And I’d like to talk to you how we can ensure that Iran’s aggression does not go unanswered.”

The U.S. Treasury Department announced new sanctions on Iran Friday. From NPR:

The newly announced sanctions target people and businesses the U.S. government says support Iran’s ballistic missile program and its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, according to a Treasury Department statement. They are in line with previous sanctions, implemented over what then-President Barack Obama called Iran’s “violations of human rights, for its support of terrorism and for its ballistic missile program.”…

The public text of the sanctions lists 12 companies and 13 individuals, blocking assets and prohibiting U.S. citizens from dealing with them.

The new sanctions follow a blunt announcement by U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Flynn last Wednesday in which Flynn warned, “We are officially putting Iran on notice.” Both the statement and the sanctions were prompted by a missile test carried out by Iran last week as well as Iran’s support for Houthi rebels in Yemen.
