Conservatives speak: Add your questions to the mix

posted at 2:01 pm on February 11, 2016 by Ed Morrissey

Ever wanted to ask presidential candidates a question? Tired of media filters on the issues? Here’s your chance to cut through the gatekeeping and get direct access to presidential contenders in both parties. Townhall Media has partnered with Change Politics to provide a forum for voters to pose questions, and candidates have committed to answering the most popular of them as chosen by the users themselves. Townhall will run the conservative channel:

Voters have a new resource this election cycle to help them cut through the noise of the primary and general process. Influential petition platform Change.org launched their new mobile web app and desktop site, Change Politics, Thursday morning, increasing access to candidates in the presidential field.

Through Change Politics, users can submit questions directly to participating candidates, search through the endorsements from prominent figures and organizations in the political arena, and create a personalized ballot guide based on their preferences. …

In addition to teaming up with several of the campaigns, Change Politics is partnering with media outlet across the country during their initial launch. Local outlets include the Des Moines Register, the Concord Monitor, and the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Townhall.com, in coordination with the rest of the Townhall Media sites, will participate as the conservative media partner for the rollout of a national town hall that will take place in February.

The website already has voter-submitted questions, and we have eight days to get many, many more! As the website grows, more features will come, and not just for the presidential election:

  • Endorsements- voters and organizations will be able to make endorsements for candidates, and see endorsements being made by other people and organizations in their network.
  • Personalized Ballot- with the new information from endorsements and questions, voters can populate a sample ballot for election day, empowering all of us to make informed decisions about everyone from the Presidential Candidates to City Dog Catcher.

Change Politics also sees this as an opportunity for journalists normally locked out of media access to candidates to engage candidates directly:

  1. Change Politics helps journalists engage their audience by crowdsourcing questions for candidates from voters.
  2. Change Politics helps journalists track voters’ views and concerns, and support for candidates, by issue and geography.
  3. Outlets can set up dedicated branded “Forums” on Change Politics to crowdsource questions from voters in advance of an outlet-organized interview or event.

Right now, we have confirmed that Ted Cruz and Jeb Bush will participate in the forum. We have invited other Republican campaigns to join us as well. Be sure to add your voice — and your questions — to the mix!

Note: I have already added my question, complete with video. Check out the site to find it — it’s on the budget — and upvote it if you like it.

Update: John Kasich has not confirmed his participation yet in the national effort. I have edited that paragraph and regret the error. Also, I forgot to include the link to my question, which I have added now.

ConstantineXI on February 11, 2016 at 2:17 PM

1. Does the candidate believe that American citizens have the unalienable right to self-determination as nation of people? Not the government, not the establishment, but the people?

1.1 Follow-up: If not why? If so, how do you justify the president, aided and abetted by Congress, opening our borders to a flood of foreign nationals and therefore violating that fundamental right, especially given American citizens did not vote for, do not want and are extremely angry about the matter of out-of-control immigration?

2. Over the past two presidential terms, the rich cronies of the the bipartisan political establishment have become far richer, far faster than ever in American history while at the same time them American citizens in the middle and working classes have become poorer and see no real hope of positive change on the horizon while the government-dependent underclass has expanded significantly. Will you as president represent the establishment or American citizens? If so, explain exactly how you will do so without using the words “reform” or “change”…

That’s a start.

I have no desire to sign up for anything but my question would be:

What do you intend to do to bring accountability back to the Executive Branch?

The answer is more important than the question. I would want to hear specifics instead of platitudes. Given the actions of the IRS, the VA, the DoJ, and other branches of government there is fertile ground for substantive answers. And BTW, fire them all isn’t the right answer either.

Happy Nomad on February 11, 2016 at 2:21 PM

It appears that the U.S. Navy has been tasked with making token patrols regarding freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. How would you or won’t you alter this mission?

Limerick on February 11, 2016 at 2:43 PM

One more question:
How will you use the bully pulpit to advance the ideas and principles of conservatism if you are elected?

GWB on February 11, 2016 at 2:43 PM

If you were a cheese, what cheese would you be?

Bishop on February 11, 2016 at 2:44 PM

Conservative = “conserve”.

Is not the first obligation of a “conservative” to conserve The Republic and its citizens by protecting it and them from foreign invasion?

— invasion by illegal border-crossers and visa overstayers.

— invasion by hijrah, combined with jihad.

After you take care of #1 and #2, by enforcing all current laws, which include deportation, come back and argue the many domestic issues.

If you don’t, our Congress will be arguing in Spanish, with Nancy Pelosi and her girlfriends sitting in the segregated balcony, where sharia dictates.

fred5678 on February 11, 2016 at 2:45 PM

When granting visas for employment or educational purposes, why doesn’t the federal government require employers or schools to post bonds to help offset the cost of apprehending visa overstayers if they go off the grid?

Why aren’t employers or schools required–with the assistance of appropriate authorities–to escort visa holders to the airport, to put them on a non-stop flight to their home country, and to confirm their arrival in their home country?

BuckeyeSam on February 11, 2016 at 2:46 PM

APACHEWHOKNOWS on February 11, 2016 at 2:24 PM

I have no idea who these people are. But you obviously have an issue with them. That said here is what you may not know. Illegal’s cannot really be controlled by business. I never hired an illegal as far as I know. But I saw in other businesses people I respected having to because they had to compete with people who did. Really no choice in the matter. At one point I went to the local employment office and talked to the head of it whom I knew personally fairly well and told him about a job with illegal’s on it being treated like animals. Not an exaggeration either. He told me he had tried many times and knew if he said anything the Governor’s office would be right in his fact about it.

This has to be done through govt. by verification or some such equally across all businesses. Right now govt. regulators play favorites at the higher levels.

Cruz says he will do so. I believe Trump will make a Yuge deal.

ConstantineXI on February 11, 2016 at 2:40 PM

But you yourself have put up a few questions here. I’m sure Ed will take the best of what he finds here and put them over there.

As for spam, if you have your own mailserver and webapp, it’s easy to deal with. You assign inbound mail to one of two bins — people you know and want to talk to, and everyone else. You look briefly at “everyone else” and decide whether you want to move them to the “440” bin, move them to “know and want”, or leave them in “everyone else”. Everyone in “440” gets a “440 mailserver temporarily unavailable” message from the server (the client tells the server what to 440) and you never even see the stuff in either “everyone else” or “know and want” again.

For me, that means Salem Communications gets 440’d, because a few years back, I decided they were way too talkative about things they think I ought to buy.

Universal suffrage has been proven, without question, not to work because when everyone can vote and all votes count equally whether from producer or parasite it always results in the populace voting itself “bread and circuses” without limit from the public treasury.
