Reader survey results: Patriots the favorite … villain

posted at 10:41 am on February 9, 2016 by Ed Morrissey

The results are in … and man, Hot Air readers really don’t like the New England Patriots. More than 1100 readers took our non-scientific Survey Monkey poll about Peyton Manning and retirement, but the most eye-popping result was on the least-favorite NFL team in the league. Nearly three times as many respondents picked the Pats over the runner-up Dallas Cowboys:

least-fave

Ouch. The Steelers came in fifth and the Jets seventh, neatly taking care of our favorites here on the NFL threads. But seriously … the Ravens don’t get more votes than the Steelers as least liked team? Does Justin Tucker’s rendition of “Ave Maria” have something to do with that? Maybe we can get Antonio Brown to do a quick cover of “Roll Away the Stone” in 2016.

Our respondents mostly agree on one thing — they really like the NFL.

nfl-fans

Nearly 75% of the respondents watch most or all of the games they can. This has a significant selection bias, though, as this poll probably only appeals to those who are already interested in football.

This brings us to the big question:

peyton-retire

Slightly more than 76% believe Peyton Manning should retire, but almost all of those respondents respected Manning’s choice not to overshadow the victory with a retirement announcement. Almost no one thought Peyton should definitely return; only nine respondents chose that option. Twenty percent want to give him space to make that decision for himself, but that’s not exactly a vote of confidence.

Perhaps it’s time for Peyton Manning to go out on top, with 200 wins and two Super Bowl rings, but … we will miss him when he’s gone. And if anyone doubts that, Cam Newton reminded everyone of it in his post-game appearance with the media:

If you’re going to “dab” and dance in the end zone, you have to be able to deal with a loss occasionally, too. Manning sat through a press conference after losing a Super Bowl by thirty-plus points a couple of years ago, and managed to answer questions and act graciously about the loss. Stephen Smith’s right — Newton is a great player with a bright future ahead of him, but he’s still got some growing up to do, too. Maybe he can get Manning to give him some coaching on that.

Update: The original post referred to the Ravens’ placekicker as Justin Tuck. It should have been Justin Tucker; Justin Tuck is a former Giants player. My apologies to both men for the error.

ToddPA on February 9, 2016 at 12:52 PM

Well, the Pats have been caught cheating, in numerous ways, numerous times. Thus all are suspect.

Rogue on February 9, 2016 at 11:15 AM

LOL! “All are suspect,” Minerva?

How many times have the Patriots place kickers “cheated” over the years? How exactly does one “cheat” on kicking a point after or field goal?

And how exactly would a Patriots Center “cheat” to help the team win?

Sorry, but they’ve been caught and punished exactly once. Spygate 1. Spygate 2 was deemed false by the NFL, and DeflateGate has been laughed out of a Federal Court.

Please provide all of the other “numerous ways, numerous times”, and I’ll be willing to listen. Be sure to include credible cites. ESPN is not credible, because they were busted as lying on their original DeflateGate claim (by the NFL, no less) and have never retracted their Lie.

But the fact that all you could throw out was that sad-sack nebulous claim as your initial “response”, with no evidence and no credible examples of them cheating, would lead me to believe you don’t know what you’re babbling about.

Please prove me wrong!

That’s the entirety of the basis for calling the Patriots “dirty”.

deadrody on February 9, 2016 at 12:21 PM

That and the cheating.

And Coach B’s stank-ass hoodie.

hillbillyjim on February 9, 2016 at 12:24 PM

Name all of the games the Patriots “cheated” in, with specifics on how they cheated. And then detail how the NFL punished the team after each example.

I’ll save you the time. I just did a Google search using the following keywords:

“NFL fines against New England Patriots 2000-2016”

In other words, I was searching for all examples of the NFL fining the team over a 15 year period.

I came up with exactly 2 results-2007, Spygate 1, and 2015, Brady gets suspended 4 games, but that second one was laughed out of a Federal Court, so it’s worthless.

But feel free to do your own research, and do get back to us with all of the other times-if you can find them!

Sure he has. Every time he is criticized for acting like a jackass during the game he makes the claim that its just because he is an “African-American playing QB in the NFL” and whitey don’t like it.

America today despises success.

People have been conditioned for decades by the Left to believe success is only stolen. It comes off the backs of the losers through a rigged system. It’s not earned through hard work, drive determination and talent anymore.

The hatred for the Cowboy’s success in the past still lingers today despite not having won a single playoff game in many years which proves the point.

One of the greatest, dedicated, honest hard working QBs in history gets booed at an event honoring past Super Bowl MVPs while a man implicated in a multiple homicide and who please guilty in obstruction of justice is cheered.

What an F’ed up country we’ve become. I just hope it’s fixable.

I have strongly disliked Tom Brady since he abandoned his unborn child and ran off and married the super model at St. Monica Catholic Church, and on top of it, his father is apparently a lib dissident ‘catholic’ who put his name on a public petition to remove a wonderful and FAITHFUL bishop in San Francisco. Right or wrong, I just can’t stand him.

Peyton Manning, I like very much. I will miss him. This was the first Super Bowl I’ve cared about enough to watch in years. I’m so glad his team won.

Even Harris said after finding out about it that he would have responded the same way to hearing his opponents saying the things he said – and that the NFL messed up by putting opposing players so close together for interviews.

pannw on February 9, 2016 at 4:05 PM

There’s a lot more to that story.

Shortly after Moynahan and Brady ended their three-year relationship in 2006, the NFL quarterback began dating Bundchen.

However, just a few months into their relationship, Moynahan announced she was more than three months pregnant with Brady’s baby.

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/bridget-moynahan-responds-gisele-bundchen-tom-brady-baby-news-best-article-1.194671

Do a search on “tom brady illegitimate child” – lots of stories come up – and the more recent ones all indicate Tom, Gisele, and Bridgette all get along quite well now and are all involved with Bridgette and Tom’s kid.

Sorry, but they’ve been caught and punished exactly once. Spygate 1.

Well, kinda sorta. They got punished twice, of course. But to say they’ve been “caught” once implies that they’ve cheated, which is an admittedly popular narrative, but a very cheesy accusation. What they were found by the league to be “guilty” of in 2007 is the equivalent of a uniform violation. It was like being assessed a game-changing (i.e. loss of 1st round pick) unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for wearing the wrong colored cleats, or an unapproved commercial logo.

All the latent lefties like to say the Patriots were guilty of taping the Jets’ defensive signals (hence the “spy” in “spygate”), but the plain fact is that taping those signals was never disallowed, and lots of teams did it. The Patriots were “guilty” of taping from the sidelines, which was newly against the rules that year. The rule said no taping from places where the coaches are, such as sidelines or coaches boxes, so that coaches can’t use the tape during the game to influence the outcome. Belichik defended himself by saying he wasn’t using the tape during the game, it was, like always, for his analysis later on, and so he was in compliance with the meaning of the rule.

That was true. But they screwed him on basically a technicality, and used it to launch a “cheating” story line that quickly turned into a PR bonanza and ratings staple for the NFL, which they’ve been riding now for almost a decade. That’s why Kraft went along with it – him and his little band of merrymen owners have a WWF-worthy “scandal” soap opera running year-round, while the cup of their cash-cow runneth over. And the nation is filled with petty little men (and women) who use the resulting circus as one of undoubtedly many outlets for their cultivated envy and contempt, certain in their corrupt little hearts that they have “proof” that Brady, or Belichick, or the Patriots “cheated”.

In the meantime, it is now declared illegal (i.e. unconstitutional) for a community within these borders to establish a social institution for regulating or even norming sexual behavior according to the terms which used to be called marriage. But, hey, why get all serious about it…

I’m glad the adults all feel good about themselves. I feel very sorry for the first child who was abandoned by his father for the underwear model. I suppose he might understand when he’s grown. Regardless, it would be less stomach churning if Gisele hadn’t spewed the nonsense about wondering if she should stay while another woman was carrying her boyfriend’s child, but that he was just such a ‘pure heart’ and from such a good Catholic family! *vomit* The pure of heart don’t knock up their girlfriend of 3 years and abandon her and their child. Patriarchs of good Catholic families don’t sign petitions and post them on full page ads in the paper to oust faithful bishops; they send letters of thanksgiving for them.

Honestly, there really isn’t that much to the story. Boy meets girl, likes her enough to stay in a relationship with her for 3 years, and have sexual relations with her. He gets her pregnant right before he dumps her, runs off with an underwear model for a couple months. First girl announces pregnancy, and he thinks about his responsibility to his child for a second and chooses the underwear model, but because they are all so nice to the child, its just so pure of heart! The end. Yep, I still can’t stand him.

Do you know who Ray Lewis is? Ray Rice? Greg Hardy? Adrian Peterson? Do I really need to go on? You’re worried about Brady when you have people like Antonio Cromartie with 10 kids from many different women?

This country has become dominated by jealous intellectually dishonest hypocrites.

What a joke.

TheBigOldDog on February 10, 2016 at 6:00 AM

TheBigOldDog on February 10, 2016 at 6:06 AM

All things are good when your winning and strutting around like a cheerleader in the end zone. In every game there is a winner and a looser, and not once have I ever seen the losing QB walk out like that after the SB.

This is the product of the spoiled culture we have in the sports now. To me what makes a person is how well they handle defeat. Cam does not have that quality and never will. To be honest, I hope the punk loses at least one or two more of them so I can see that ego of his get beat up.

Speaking of giving me a break…I have heard of some of those and some, no idea who they are, but when did I ever say I approved or admired any of them? That’s right, I didn’t. But news flash, OldDog, I was responding to the fact that Patriots are the least liked team, and Brady, being the ‘face’ of the team, colors my feelings about them. I do tend to hold those who claim ‘Catholic’ as their title to a higher standard, the same way I tend to be more critical of Nancy Pelosi than even Obama. As a Catholic, I don’t like the scandal from people who hold themselves up as ‘good’ when they are doing anything but upholding Church Teaching. When you express opinions on behavior, do you include every possible perpetrator of those behaviors? I bet not. And there is nothing to be jealous of a man who has children by more than one woman when both women are still alive. It is a tragedy. Perhaps having money and hot babes is more important to you, but not to all of us.

And just to be clear, I will admit that I haven’t actually seen Tom Jr. claiming to be all that ‘good’, to his credit. But the stuff from Gisele and his dad…a little ‘scandalous’ and he never corrected it. If he weren’t such a huge public figure it wouldn’t be the same, but he is and thus comes the ‘scandal’ part.
