Video: Rubio gives the most triumphant third-place speech ever

posted at 11:02 pm on February 1, 2016 by Allahpundit

Hard to blame him: He’s clearly the frontrunner in the center-right lane after tonight’s surprising finish, with New Hampshire just a week away. In fact, as I write this, it’s not even certain that he finished third. With 97 percent reporting, he’s only a point behind Trump for second.

Oh well. There’s no problem here that another $40 million in Jeb Bush Super PAC attack ads about “amnesty” can’t solve!

Yah, it was cool. Great family.

Time to pass the torch to the new generation!

The next president. Fact.

Good speech!

Rubio is declared the de facto establishmentarian candidate.

How can he win when a supermajority are anti establishment?

How can the traitorous punk, who betrayed all he ever met, run as the anti-establishment?

Please, only those who think with their brains, answer.

Schadenfreude on February 1, 2016 at 11:10 PM

He was smart to get out there and speak so quickly. What is taking Cruz so long?

That is the next president. Watch that speech and tell me you didn’t get goosebumps. I am so happy he was able to burst the Trump bubble.

I have never seen Trump give a shorter speech – he basically shut him up. I hope after Palin cashes her check, she can go back to her outhouse and shut up once and for all.

LeeBelieu on February 1, 2016 at 11:21 PM

I think this was a VERY good night for Rubio. This was a harder fight for him than a lot of upcoming states will be. This man will be in it until the end. With a lot of dropouts coming soon, there are a lot of votes to pick up and I’d venture he’s better positioned to pick them up than either Cruz or Trump.

Cornfed on February 1, 2016 at 11:21 PM

carson53 on February 1, 2016 at 11:23 PM

For all the “bragging about third eh?”. Well Rubio does slightly better in general head to head polls and favorability than Cruz. He also won’t allow the democrats to check off most every box for social attacks like Cruz. Cruz also didn’t face 60 mil in attack ads. Rubio did, and weathered it. Cruz outperformed his RCP average by 4 points. Rubio outperformed his by 7. This despite everyone and their mom saying he didn’t bother with the early states. Fact is Rubio will do better in a general election than Cruz. Just the way Cruz is. Though I still say, Rubio/Cruz ends the whole game as soon as its formed.

Rubio, like Hillary, was for the Libya operation, which gave us Benghazi and ISIS in Libya now.

He faltered on Syria and would like a war with Putin. He is the Weekly Standard’s neocon wet dream. You need to think sharper.

bgibbs1000 on February 1, 2016 at 11:13 PM

Actually, they are pretty close. Both are for amnesty, both want to project power abroad, and neither sees budget deficit as a killer issue. One redeeming feature is that Rubio, if he wins (and he’ll do without my vote), may bury ISIS the same way Reagan did the Soviets.

You said 17 Allah. You should have a little more humility screwing up your prediction that badly.

The one issue immigration tin foil hats are having a hard time tonight. Maybe if they type ‘GOPe’ and other stupid crap like petulant children a few hundred times they’ll feel better. One more day and Rubio would have finished second.

Also very proud of Bill Buckley’s National Review tonight.

Actually, the anchor baby made a pretty impressive speech. Why not pretend you won it all if it’s being reported that way from the stabie media? And the anchor baby evolved in his speeches to get rid of some of that phony tonality. He still has the speech impediment, but much better cadence and voice-tone than I’ve seen from him in the past.

You mean you want to over ride the votes of the majority so you can have your way.

That is not how a democracy works.

You convince people you are right. Cruz did that in Iowa. Trump will likely do it in New Hampshire, and Rubio may do it in a few states as well.

Then you total up the delegates and the guy with the most votes wins. So what do you have against WE THE PEOPLE voting for President anyway?

No body is forcing me to support Rubio, and I am not claiming that if Trump had won today, or the fact that Cruz did, as shoving anyone down my throat!

Majority wins. Go join up with Sanders if you like Totalitarianism so very much.

Schadenfreude on February 1, 2016 at 11:10 PM

Good point. That’s why I think this year is the year the establishment finally loses. However, the fight between Trump and Cruz could cause us to still lose.

Two possible routes:

1: Trump drops out and Trump voters decide to stay home instead of backing Cruz.

2: Cruz drops out and Cruz voters decide to accept Rubio instead of taking a flyer on Trump.

Frankly, if we get past March 15th and all three are still in the race, it might be a good time for a tactical alliance. Cruz can go West and fight Rubio in the mountain west states (that do not like Trump) while Trump fights Rubio in New England, New York, etc.

Sackett on February 2, 2016 at 1:02 AM

Rubio the new Eddie the Eagle w/that celebration for not wiping out.

Cruz needs to dial back the lapses into Vince McMahon growl-voice.

One32ndHekawi on February 2, 2016 at 1:04 AM

The Buckley Rule is still wise advice.

I’ve come to back Cruz, and agree most years he would not be electable in the general election. It seems this year is different. He would have a very good chance of winning it all against either Dem. To my thinking, it is perhaps the one last time in our lifetimes that we have a real chance of electing a consistent conservative, so why not go for it?

Rubio so fake, every word from his mouth is scripted and insincere. Someone in comments above called it a great speech “and no teleprompter”! LOL! No teleprompter…like he was speaking from the heart- He was reading words written on pieces of paper! That’s what a teleprompter was before technology!

Rubio sucks- lazy [email protected] read the same speech written for a surprise victory, and he didn’t even bother to amend it! -“Some said we couldn’t do it”- Huh? Do what, finish third? Actually most people said you’d finish third, except for some who thought Marcomentum was going to bring you the gold, loser.

What a lazy sleazy little shit. I’d call him unctuous, an oily character, greasy even. A snake, a worm. Rubio is the second sleaziest candidate in the entire election field- Only lady Clinton with her long history of corruption, dishonesty and deceit is more emetic to me. Rubio, the republican Obama.

hal_mccombs on February 2, 2016 at 7:18 AM

Cruz’s win and Rubio’s rise in the polls is directly attributable to Trump attacking Cruz and his failure to show up for the debate.

Still glad to see Cruz and Trump at the top, if they would quit attacking each other then we’d see Rubio’s numbers shrink.

Ditto.

Rubio = Bush Jr. = McConnell = Boehner = Ryan

What the hell would change with a President Rubio? The number of, and proclivities of K Street denizens for sure, and then what?

Barf.

Difficultas_Est_Imperium on February 2, 2016 at 8:48 AM

Upshot:

Cruz lives to fight another day; if he had lost, Trump would have steamrolled through the primaries. That is not a certainty now.

In a bizarre meltdown, third-place Rubio gives a presidential acceptance speech with every cliched platitude the GOPe ever conjured. Since two-thirds of Republicans are voting against the GOPe, all he did was crystallize his doom. He’s dead man walking. Amnesty finished his career for at least the next decade unless you count an appointment to the ambassadorship of Cuba.

Two weeks ago, Trump was figured to finish Iowa just where he did. Only in the last week did it seem that he might surge to beat Cruz.

But he didn’t because he made the tactical political error of not showing at the last debate. It gave Rubio the airtime he needed to generate his closing momentum.

The error is not fatal, it brought his feet down to the ground. In the long run a humbler, less arrogant Trump is a more dangerous candidate.

WINNER: Cruz. WINNER: Trump. LOSER: Rubio and the others.

Younggod on February 2, 2016 at 9:25 AM

I thought Marco had won the entire Presidential campaign last night. His attitude and LONG speech were inappropriate… like there’s no need to have an election.
