Pelosi: Yeah, that Sanders guy’s tax plan is pretty crazy

posted at 10:41 am on January 28, 2016 by Jazz Shaw

How crazy is Bernie Sanders’ tax and spend plan? Seeing Republicans and conservatives opposing it won’t come as much of a surprise, but when you can’t sell your idea to Nancy Pelosi then we’ve truly crossed over into magical unicorn territory. (The Hill)

Democrats are not on board with the tax hikes Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has proposed to pay for his single-payer healthcare proposal, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Wednesday.

“We’re not running on any platform of raising taxes,” Pelosi said during a press briefing to launch the Democrats’ yearly issues conference in Baltimore, Md. “We do want to have a fairer tax system, and … we hope that we can do that this year.”

Sanders on Monday acknowledged that his “Medicare-for-all” healthcare plan would require tax hikes on the middle class.

“We will raise taxes, yes we will,” Sanders said during a Democratic town hall in Des Moines, Iowa.

When you’ve lost Nancy Pelosi on your tax proposal, you’re pretty much standing on the battle field alone. Let’s take a quick look at some of Pelosi’s previous ideas on the tax front, particularly back when she was Speaker.

  • Proposed a “millionaire surtax” to pay for health care
  • Asked for an additional surtax of 5.4% on the top tax bracket
  • Voted against retaining reduced taxes on capital gains & dividends
  • Voted against the Working Families Tax Relief Act of 2004
  • Voted against a permanent increase in the child tax credit
  • Voted against permanently eliminating the marriage penalty

If we could just have a moment of Bernie’s time, I’d like to offer him a bit of help and suggest he talk to a therapist. Nancy Pelosi isn’t just one of the titular leaders of your party. She’s the queen of wanting to increase taxes and expand the power of the federal government. Now you’ve even got her looking at you sideways and edging away. Your tax plan is a work of fiction, Senator Sanders. You may want to pull the rip cord on this one while you still have the chance.

She’s lying of course, she’ll raise taxes just as much as Bernie, his mistake is he called it what it was, taxes.

Pelosi calls it mandates, fees, fair share, penalties, etc.

When are American progressives going to have the courage of their convictions in the public square?

They openly worship the “democratic social” states of northern europe but never talk about the massive middle class and VAT taxation they employ trying to make it sustainable.

This is why I could vote for Bernie. Because he’s not going to get his domestic agenda implemented. As for foreign affairs, we’re heading for another global war anyway, give our military a few years to catch its breath.

rbj on January 28, 2016 at 10:51 AM

Bernie should respond with “We have to enact my tax plan to know what’s in it.”

Flange on January 28, 2016 at 10:51 AM

Pelosi has figured out that rich Democrats don’t want their oxes gored by Sanders.

However they are fine with everyone else being taxed out of the middle class.

Careful who you go down with, Jazz. You’ll come up with fleas.

The Dems have no strategy to fight Trump. They rely on Political Correctness. What is their backup plan?

Oil Can on January 28, 2016 at 10:52 AM

Don’t kid yourself. If somehow Sanders is elected they’ll be more than happy to help him raise taxes.

If there’s one thing we know about democrats (and Republicans) is they don’t give a sh!t about Americans or America.

darwin on January 28, 2016 at 10:53 AM

Here you see the challenges of holding together a constituency for the Democrats.

People assume the Dems can win on the strength of blacks, Latinos, gays, trans women, abortionists, and university professors. But that can’t get them to 50%. They also need upper-income folks.

Typically, the Dems have been able to peel off enough upper-income white voters by appealing on cultural issues, like abortion and gay marriage. But they also need to keep the taxes low.

…and Bernie needs to stop letting the cat out of the bag.

I’m sure she likes Bernie’s tax plan, but she can’t say so publicly. If Dems had their way, they’d have a tax system like France has.

I’ll bet liberals see this as Pelosi “caving to Republicans.”

dentarthurdent on January 28, 2016 at 11:39 AM

To the tax queen and Bernie,

Cutting taxes to the middle class 20% will only impact the Federal income 1.25%. So rather than increase taxes, try spending a little less – you dig?

Just a fun fact for all you tax fans out there.

Inflation is the stealth tax we’ve been made to pay under Pelosi, Reid and Obama, not to mention Bush and his party. That’s a tax that’s rarely acknowledged, but it is the most prevalent one. It’s safe for her to say she’s not for Sander’s tax plans.

I get such a kick out of hearing people – people I know, people I know to be very intelligent – tell me how they support Bernie because they think he is sincere, and well intentioned, but will NEVER be able to implement half of what he is proposing.

This truly is the year of the anti-establishment on BOTH sides of the isles and for very similar reasons, it just seems to depend on whether you lean Marxist or American.
