How crazy is Bernie Sanders’ tax and spend plan? Seeing Republicans and conservatives opposing it won’t come as much of a surprise, but when you can’t sell your idea to Nancy Pelosi then we’ve truly crossed over into magical unicorn territory. (The Hill)

Democrats are not on board with the tax hikes Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has proposed to pay for his single-payer healthcare proposal, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Wednesday.

“We’re not running on any platform of raising taxes,” Pelosi said during a press briefing to launch the Democrats’ yearly issues conference in Baltimore, Md. “We do want to have a fairer tax system, and … we hope that we can do that this year.”

Sanders on Monday acknowledged that his “Medicare-for-all” healthcare plan would require tax hikes on the middle class.

“We will raise taxes, yes we will,” Sanders said during a Democratic town hall in Des Moines, Iowa.

When you’ve lost Nancy Pelosi on your tax proposal, you’re pretty much standing on the battle field alone. Let’s take a quick look at some of Pelosi’s previous ideas on the tax front, particularly back when she was Speaker.

  • Proposed a “millionaire surtax” to pay for health care
  • Asked for an additional surtax of 5.4% on the top tax bracket
  • Voted against retaining reduced taxes on capital gains & dividends
  • Voted against the Working Families Tax Relief Act of 2004
  • Voted against a permanent increase in the child tax credit
  • Voted against permanently eliminating the marriage penalty

If we could just have a moment of Bernie’s time, I’d like to offer him a bit of help and suggest he talk to a therapist. Nancy Pelosi isn’t just one of the titular leaders of your party. She’s the queen of wanting to increase taxes and expand the power of the federal government. Now you’ve even got her looking at you sideways and edging away. Your tax plan is a work of fiction, Senator Sanders. You may want to pull the rip cord on this one while you still have the chance.
