Open thread: Trump versus O’Reilly

posted at 8:01 pm on January 27, 2016 by Allahpundit

We’re all going to be watching so we might as well have a thread for comments. I used “versus” in the headline loosely because this is bound to be one of those “we go back a long time so level with me here” friendly arguments, but it’ll probably be more antagonistic than everyone thought it would be four hours ago, before Trump announced he really is holding an event opposite the debate tomorrow night. I thought this interview was going to be a song-and-dance where O’Reilly nudges him to reconsider because “the folks” are counting on him, Trump hems and haws and says he’s mad at Mean Megyn but he’ll think it over, and then everyone celebrates tomorrow when he announces he’ll show up after all because he owes it to Iowans. In fact, I wonder if that’s what Ailes thought he was getting when he agreed to let O’Reilly interview Trump this morning. As it is, with tomorrow night’s event for veterans now in motion, this is going to play more like a formal kiss-off to the debate than a “maybe, we’ll see” thing. Unless of course Trump opts for even more drama by announcing he may cancel the event, cut a check to veterans’ groups, and do the debate anyway.

Every reality show needs a good cliffhanger now and then.

I wonder how Kelly feels about the guy who precedes her in the line-up giving Trump a platform to grumble about her without any compensation in the form of “okay, maybe I’ll do the debate.” Fox critic Gabriel Sherman sees skullduggery at work:

This morning, Joe Scarborough reported that Ailes called Trump’s daughter Ivanka and wife, Melania, to get through to the GOP front-runner. But Trump is saying he’ll only talk to Rupert Murdoch directly. In a further challenge to Ailes’s power, Bill O’Reilly is scheduled to host Trump. Last night, Ailes directed Sean Hannity to cancel Trump’s interview. O’Reilly’s refusal to abide by a ban adds a new dynamic to the clash of egos. For O’Reilly, this is an opportunity to take back star power from Kelly. Sources say O’Reilly feels he made Kelly’s career by promoting her on his show, and he’s been furious that Kelly surpassed him in the ratings.

O’Reilly’s going to knife Ailes and Kelly, arguably the network’s most valuable property, by having Trump on over their objections? That seems … unlikely. More likely is that Ailes understands all too well that Trump has a big fan base and he doesn’t want to feed Trump’s narrative that the network is at war with him, even if he ends up skipping the debate tomorrow. The O’Reilly interview is an olive branch to viewers who like Trump, showing them that he’s still welcome there, they’re still willing to give him a fair hearing, and so forth.

If you need some conversation fodder during commercial breaks, here’s an interesting result from the new Purple Strategies national poll showing Trump leading the field by 20 points:

ps

These numbers are interesting too. This is a poll of Republican primary voters, mind you:

ps2

Via Red State, here’s Gutfeld defending Kelly from Corey Lewandowski’s alleged threats today on “The Five.” We’ll see if O’Reilly is this angry.

Her value is dropping fast. I predict she doesn’t get signed back up next contract talks.

Either they won’t offer the money and she walks or they don’t renew and she walks.

Bet she’s looking right now for an escape hatch.

jake1246 on January 28, 2016 at 12:37 AM

What alternate reality universe are you living in? Her show is one of the highest rated ones out there, second only to O’Reilly, and not even behind him by much. She gained 16% last year over the year before. Between her, O’Reilly and Hannity, Fox is double to quadruple higher in ratings/viewership than CNN, their closest competitor. They leave MSNBC entirely in the dust. Out of ALL cable stations (including both news and non-news), the only cable station that does any better is ESPN.

Kelly is absolute gold for Fox, there’s no way they’d let her go. And when you’re clearly winning by a mile, as she is, there’s zero need for any “escape hatch.”

I think it must be literally impossible for anyone to contradict themselves and flip flop 180 degrees any more than Trump does without being institutionalized in a loony bin. From an article April 2014:

…At a Republican event at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida, Trump called Cruz a “very special guy.”

“One of the reasons I like Ted Cruz so much, is that he’s not controversial,” he said at the Palm Beach County Republican Party’s Lincoln Day Dinner in February, drawing laughs from the crowd.

“He shouldn’t be controversial because what he is doing is right. He took a stand recently, that if he had just a little backing — and Ted and I have spoken about this — from other Republicans … he would have negotiated one hell of a deal. It might not have ended ObamaCare, but you would have really gotten a big chunk out of it,” Trump added, speaking about last year’s government shutdown fight. “I mean, [Republicans] they hit him harder than they hit the Democrats.”

In the speech, Trump said that in addition to Cruz’s 21-hour speech on the Senate floor rallying against the Affordable Care Act, he had seen the Texas senator speak on “numerous occasions.”

And of course just a month or two ago Trump was carrying on about what a great guy Ted Cruz is, how he’s got a wonderful temperament and is so NICE, yada yada.

Then Cruz starts beating him in the Iowa polls, and just as Trump has done on so many others, his schizophrenia strikes again and suddenly the VERY things he’s PRAISED Cruz for before, now he claims are horrible and are because Cruz is just a nasty guy that no one likes. Trump lies so much you get whiplash just trying to keep up with his reversals, contradictions, etc., all of which are so transparently opportunistic and based on nothing more than rank political games. You can’t trust a single word Trump says, no matter what the subject is.

Rational Db8 on January 28, 2016 at 3:54 AM

Even though I beat him in the first six debates, especially the last one, Ted Cruz wants to debate me again. Can we do it in Canada?

Gutfeild and Kelly are mirror images. Both started out likable, competent, and seemingly unaffected, and having integrity.
Unfortunately the bright lights of the camera, money, and buzz have gone to their heads. Their integrity is gone. And they slobberingly kiss the hand that feeds them at FOX.

What Gutfield is doing in this video is whining and groveling for his FOX masters benefit

well that was something. so in one day, you have Hannity, Eric Bolling, and Oreilly literally begging trump to reconsider. But Trump is weak ? he sure seems like the winner so far.

I dont think Cruz is helping himself at all in any way by piling on right now.

I also dont get the “if he’s not tough enough to blah blah blah routine. I would think the opposite is true…if he isnt tough enough to stand up to fox and tell them to go scratch, then how would he do it to Iran ?

She’s a journalist. Something that Trump wants us to forget when demeans her by calling her a bimbo. Kelly’s style (which is not my favorite) is along the lines of 60 Minutes in its prime. Nevertheless, she is the host of one of the nation’s highest cable news programs. For Trump to call her a lightweight only shows just how much he hates women that are not the kind of bimbos he marries.

If she wasnt hot, she wouldnt be where she is. you can say she’s a “journalist” but there are tons fo competent journalists who could do what she does..but they arent hot enough. and if she gains 2l0bs, all her journalistic “skills” wont keep her in prime time. It just dawned on me, that it would be very interesting, if the general election came down to Trump vs. Sanders. It would be a fight to the death (Not actual death, of course, unless Bernie finally checks out.) between a Capitalist and a Socialist.

Maybe, just maybe, there would be a long overdue national discussion and debate about these systems.

I am, of course, a believer in Capitalism and a loather (?) of Socialism. It makes me ill to see those young faces behind Bernie Sanders, applauding and cheering for him and the venom coming from his decrepit mouth. Do they even have a faint clue that he is advocating a system that steals the fruits of one person’s hard labor and gives it to another person who might or might not have done anything at all to have earned it?

I was looking for a full quote of the FOX press release insulting Trump, when I discovered that WAPO had edited the press release in its report

WAPO edited press release:

Fox’s statement said that network officials “had learned from a secret back channel that the Ayatollah and Putin both intend to treat Donald Trump unfairly when they meet with him if he becomes president.”

The statement added that Trump “has his own secret plan to replace the Cabinet with his Twitter followers to see if he should even go to those meetings.”

Megyn is number one or two for a reason…and it’s not because Trump supporters hate her, about the only group that does not respect her because she stood up to him.

And his threats against Kelly was foolish, downright stupid.

Not surprising O’R did nothing, he sat there and let Geraldo attack Malkin, and did nothing.

O’R will capitulate to anyone for ratings…Megyn won’t.

Meanwhile, Trump threatening a journalist because she asks the tough questions like:

When did you actually become a Republican”, imagine that, asking a lifelong democrat when he turned the corner, and the candidate getting upset because it’s a “tough” question.

Wise up Trump boi’s…he’s a billionaire spoiled brat, and a wimp…

Trump thinks he can avoid the consequence of his worthy but controversial policy of banning Muslims by avoiding confrontations with Muslim activists. He is going to get killed in the General Election. Fox is performing a valuable public service by providing a venue for this confrontation to take place during the GOP Primary before it is too late and Trump is revealed as not up to this most difficult task.

Trump called her out on her hypocrisy. Go Google “Megyn Kelly GQ photoshoot”***. Megyn Kelly has done more to promote the sexualization of women than any words out of Trump’s mouth. Trump just pointed that out in a way that embarrassed Megyn. But you have to understand the context first. Megyn understood it. Trump understood it. You don’t.

Do you agree that actions matter more than words? What about Kelly’s actions against Trump’s words? Or are you going to run to your double standard?

No, I don’t think the same can be said of Cruz. He still isn’t attacking Trump personally, and still says that he likes and respects Trump (gawd knows why). All he’s done is defend himself against Trump’s attacks, and discussed policy differences between them.

Trump on the other hand has been very petty attacking Cruz personally – and very blatantly totally contradicting himself in the process. Not to mention lying a lot in the process. Like saying Cruz is a “nasty guy” and “no one likes him in the Senate.” A number of Senators rebutted that right off the bat, and said they LIKE Cruz and respect him, that he’s just done what he promised his constituents he would do if elected. Plus a large number of Representatives have endorsed him also. Sessions has even campaigned with him a good bit. It’s just typical Trump demagoguery and lies, trying to win using dirty tricks.

justltl on January 28, 2016 at 8:04 AM

I’d much rather see the “capitalist v. socialist” debate be between Cruz and Sanders. Trump of course strongly supports big government crony capitalism. He doesn’t believe in the free market or fair trade. When it comes to government, he thinks like a liberal/progressive – he’s absolutely fine with big government, and just thinks the problem is who’s running it. He’s certainly not the best representative to argue for capitalism, unfortunately. (he supports ethanol subsidies, creating a “massive deportation force,” tax plan that would increase our debt massively, as bad as Obama has, strongly supports Kelo – e.g., eminent domain where your property is seized to hand it over to another private entity instead of just for essential public infrastructure, etc., etc.)

Cruz on the other hand is a life long Constitutionalist – I’d LOVE to see a debate between Cruz and Hillary, or Cruz and Sanders.

I think Cruz would very politely but firmly shred any of the Dems to minuscule bits, then to be polite and clean up the resulting mess, he’d wipe the floor with them, then neatly hang them up to dry. Bet he’d have Hillary so upset and flustered, she’d be red faced, yelling and pounding the podium at some point. He’d leave Sanders impotently sputtering. Biden isn’t running, but if he were, against Cruz he would just be so confused he’d be speechless and lost.

Instead he carried on the conversation as if it was perfectly fine and expected. And if he’s supposedly not going to be in this debate because he thinks Megyn Kelly treated him so unfairly by talking about his own statements, then why didn’t he just tell O’Reilly that he was being unfair and breaking their pre-interview agreement and get up and leave that interview?
