Video: Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst kinda sorta endorses Marco Rubio without endorsing him

posted at 5:21 pm on January 25, 2016 by Allahpundit

She promised Iowans she wouldn’t formally endorse anyone and she says she’ll keep that promise even though there’s a ton of overlap between Rubio’s campaign and the team that helped Ernst get elected to the Senate in 2014. Rubio himself is the only Republican in the field who endorsed her during her primary in Iowa that year, and his PAC spent nearly a quarter of a million dollars to assist with her election effort. You’d think this would be the perfect time for a little quid pro quo. Watch the clip and you’ll see that it does sound a lot like an endorsement: She describes Rubio as “someone who is very near and dear to my heart” and segues into a speech about destroying ISIS, which is the bread-and-butter natsec message that he’s running on. The question mark here is whether what one of her spokesmen told WaPo is true: Supposedly, “she is willing to introduce any presidential candidate who asks her to do so if both can fit it into their schedules.” Does that mean she’s willing to turn up at a big “closing argument” rally for Trump next weekend if she has some free time, or is every minute of her schedule conveniently booked for the next week so that Rubio ends up as the only candidate who can use warm words from Ernst in his caucus pitch there?

Another question for you per the increasing likelihood that Trump’s going to win Iowa: Would that improve or damage Rubio’s chances of a good showing in New Hampshire? If, say, Trump pulls 36 percent next Monday compared to 26 percent for Cruz and 16 percent for Rubio, what do anti-Trumpers in New Hampshire do? At that point, having lost Iowa, Cruz could be seen as a bust; maybe some of his supporters start shifting to Rubio as the last best chance to deny Trump the nomination. In theory it’d be easier for Rubio to beat Trump head-to-head than to beat Cruz since he wouldn’t need to worry about attacks from the right against Trump except on immigration. Center-righties already like him and most conservatives would probably hold their noses for him despite the great Gang of Eight betrayal. On the other hand, if Cruz goes bust and Trump wins Iowa he might be unstoppable. What good will it do Rubio to have Cruz out of the way if Trump amasses a bunch of momentum and then cruises to a 40/25 win over Rubio in New Hampshire? I think, when push comes to shove, Rubio’s marginally better off with Cruz winning Iowa because that all but ensures a long race, even though it also increases the chance that Rubio finishes third in NH. I think he can still make his mark in South Carolina if he finishes a narrow third in New Hampshire, especially if the first two states were split between Cruz and Trump. It’s a rough outlook for anti-Trumpers, though, if we’re now gaming out who’s going to make the most effective last stand against Trump in South Carolina. Maybe it’s time to start gaming out the inevitable conservative third-party candidate instead.

She can’t endorse him, it’s non brainer ad when she runs for re-election b/c of ethanol.

Shame on your Trumpers for backing a candidate who runs on crony capitalism.

I guess she doesn’t support the invasion of America quite as much as the Rubster.

Really not that big of a deal and I doubt she has that much sway anyway.

I knew Joni had an taste for pigs but this takes it to an extreme level. Most Floridians despise the little phony, and they know him best. Never trust a boy in elevator shoes.

Or, is a RINO now anybody who doesn’t support Trump?

Wow, she didn’t even wait until she got in office to do the 180.
She went from “let’s make them squeal” to doing a Boner speech.
Rubio pretended a little before he showed his liberal colors.

I don’t think Trump can do a regular politician VP choice, unless it’s Cruz. It has to be something different. Mark Cuban for VP?

DFCtomm on January 25, 2016 at 5:40 PM

I knew that Ernst was an establishment candidate from the very beginning, same with Gardner and Tillis.

If Rove is waxing effusively over a candidate it isn’t too hard to figure out.

If you’re worried about being called a “RINO” or “establishment”, it’s probably a good idea to not endorse the establishment candidate, the one whose only achievement is Schumer’s gang of 8.

It’s like putting your hand on the stove and not expecting to get burned.

Wow, I just thought of this. General petraeus? It’s an always on 24 hr attack on Hillary, and he’s competent, even if his judgement is flawed where women are concerned. I don’t know if his conviction would allow it, but don’t think that’s a restriction as a requirement to serve as President.

If Rubio wasn’t so damaged on the immigraton issue, and if he wasn’t so bad on foreign policy, he would make sense as an establishment “compromise” VP like a HW Bush.

Then again, if he wasn’t so bad on immigration and foreign policy he would be doing much better.

Obviously the best pick would be Sessions or Brat or someone like that, I personally wouldn’t mind Petraeus lIke someone said.

Not advocating for Rubio, just what my nose tells me. Trump doesn’t need Cruz nor would stomach Teddy. What’s Cruz gonna do for Trump? Bring in TX, he’s already got it. Rally the dead end right wingers? Where are they gonna go? My thinking is chain Rubio and FL and don’t unlock him until the election is over. Of course, as often as I am, could be wrong.

rik on January 25, 2016 at 6:14 PM

It’s going to be a long week until this is over.

I suspect if Trump gets the nomination he’ll pick someone other than one of his competitors for the VP nod. Having trashed every other candidate in highly personal terms, it would be very odd to see him invite one of them onto the ticket. He might go shopping among Republican governors or former office holders for someone that would be reassuring to those voters who still care about executive political experience.

Jill1066 on January 25, 2016 at 6:24 PM

For God’s sake people, wake up. Trump is a narcissistic, power-hungry liberal all too content to let Hillary become president. He is not a conservative and never has given a dime of time or treasure in support of conservative causes.

This Obama Derangement Syndrome is out of control.

Every Trump supporter should recognize that you are a minority of a minority, and the Clinton machine will destroy him this fall. The commercials write themselves, including Trump in his own words fawning over Clinton, Obama, government-sponsored health care, and much more, coupled by his profound ignorance of public policy.

Watch Trump in the debates. He only speaks every 15-20 minutes, and he hides behind the other 6 or 7 candidates because he is an ignorant blowhard. This fall, debating Clinton on 3 occasions, he cannot hide behind anyone, and the great cross section of American voters will quickly see that this man is temperamentally unsuited for the presidency. Trump’s petulant schtick will last all of 15 minutes.

Of course Trump is dominating the media and getting excellent press. For now. Because the MSM wants him to be nominated. He is probably the only Republican that WILL lose to Hillary.

What God-fearing American wants a petulant, childish, ignorant, snide, mean-spirited man who lives upon insulting others (women, the disabled, conservatives, anyone who dares disagree with him) to be president of our nation? Haven’t we had enough division?

I understand the anger that is out there, but Donald Trump is not the solution.
