Smart power: Pentagon ordered to take action on climate change

posted at 6:01 pm on January 20, 2016 by Jazz Shaw

Clearly human driven climate change and anthropogenic global warming can not be defeated through political action alone. A challenge this monumental will call for more strident measures. With that in mind, the Obama administration has apparently decided to bring in the big guns… literally. The Pentagon has been ordered to “address climate change.” (Free Beacon)

A new directive issued by Pentagon leaders mandates that the agency work to “assess and manage risks associated with the impacts of climate change,” according to a copy of the Jan. 14 directive issued by Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work.

As the Obama administration focuses on a larger effort to push its climate change agenda, the Pentagon will now “address the impacts of climate change.” This includes engaging in “deliberate preparation, close cooperation, and coordinated planning” to “improve climate preparedness and resilience,” according to the directive.

The partnership will include state governments and the private sector.

I’m not even sure what this is supposed to mean. Are we attacking polar bears with drones? The directive goes on to state that the Department of Defense must adapt current and future operations to address the impacts of climate change in order to maintain an effective and efficient U.S. military. Is there some sort of pamphlet or handbook that goes along with this, possibly providing specific instructions? They’re being told to prepare for altered operating environments related to climate change. I suppose the Navy would like to know if any of the channels will be deeper or if any coastal bases are underwater, but beyond that I’m drawing a blank.

Or perhaps they’re supposed to be doing more to lessen their impact on climate change. That might be it. But you may recall that we already experimented with navy vessels running on biofuels to reduce our carbon footprint. The result was that the ships cost a massive amount more to operate without any noticeable benefit. They wouldn’t try something like that again, would they?

Oh, I guess they would. (US News & World Report)

The Navy is launching a carrier strike group to be powered partly by biofuel, calling it a milestone toward easing the military’s reliance on foreign oil.

The maritime branch is touting the warships as the centerpiece of its “Great Green Fleet.” Most of the group’s ships will be run for now on a mix of 90 percent petroleum and only 10 percent biofuels, though that could change in the future. The Navy originally aimed for a 50-50 ratio.

On Wednesday, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack stood on a pier at the North Island naval base in San Diego Bay where the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Stennis and the guided-missile destroyer USS Stockdale were preparing for a seven-month deployment. The Stockdale will be the first Navy ship to regularly run on alternative fuel.

You can go ahead and vote me off the island now, thanks. I think I’m done playing.

He even believes the Earth can’t do without him; has a passion for his guidance; heats and cools in accordance with his laws and ideology and movements and predictions, yes, he thinks he will watch over the Earth and keep the Earth out of trouble. He scurries about all important like and pontificates and screeches dire warnings and legislates and he thinks the Earth cares what he thinks or does, or even listens. The Navy:

The Great Green Fleet (GGF) is a year-long, Department of the Navy initiative that demonstrates the sea service’s efforts to transform its energy use. As one of the Secretary of the Navy’s key energy goals, the purpose of the GGF is to make our Sailors and Marines better warfighters, able to go farther, stay longer and deliver more firepower. Secretary Mabus chose the name Great Green Fleet to honor President Theodore Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet, which helped usher in America as a global power on the world stage at the beginning of the 20th Century. The GGF will usher in the next era of Dept. of Navy energy innovation.

The centerpiece of the Great Green Fleet is a Carrier Strike Group (CSG) that deploys on alternative fuels, including nuclear power for the carrier and a blend of advanced biofuel made from beef fat and traditional petroleum for its escort ships. These biofuels have been procured by DON at prices that are on par with conventional fuels, as required by law, and are certified as “drop-in” replacements that require no engine modifications or changes to operational procedures. The CSG also uses energy efficient technologies and operating procedures referred to as Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) during the course of its normal operations.

Throughout 2016, other Dept. of Navy platforms including ships, aircraft, amphibious and expeditionary forces, as well as shore installations, will participate in the GGF by using energy efficient systems, operational procedures, and/or alternative fuel during the course of planned mission functions worldwide.

Ashore, DON installations have in procurement 1.1 gigawatts of renewable energy – or about one-half of overall DON power requirements as of January 2016. Renewable energy projects at our facilities can help increase resiliency by enabling them to continue operations in the event of a commercial grid disruption.

http://greenfleet.dodlive.mil/energy/great-green-fleet/

the Navy requires the 50/50 camelina/JP-5 biofuel be a drop-in replacement for petroleum-based fuel; have no notable operational differences; and be able to be mixed or alternated with petroleum fuel.

Patriot Vet on January 21, 2016 at 7:53 AM

The Navy is launching a carrier strike group to be powered partly by biofuel, calling it a milestone toward easing the military’s reliance on foreign oil.

With oil priced below $28/bbl and the US now exporting oil, let me be the first to say to B Hussein O, “The eighties is calling and they want their energy policies back”.

This is actually very interesting power grab here. First we recommissioned NASA to abandon space work (the Russians now act as Uber to the ISS) and to further Muslim self-esteem, now we are changing the military so that it is no longer the military but a propaganda arm for the AGW redistributionists.

I wonder if the next President can take an agency and their budget, allegedly made for a particular purpose, and dramatically change its role.

For example, ATF would be recommissioned to assist rather than hinder the personal acquisition of all sorts of firearms, especially [former] NFA weapons and accessories.

The IRS can be recommissioned to assist businesses and lawsuit winners in their debt collection efforts and locating deadbeat dads.

The various welfare agencies can be recommissioned into anti-fraud investigators.

The possibilities are endless where an agency, formed for one reason, granted a budget for that mission, he totally refocused, with budgets intact to a completely different mission.

The military will have to measure the amount of greenhouse gases each shell that is fired produces. Then when in combat, the number of rounds fired cannot exceed the number of equivalent available carbon credits that were previously purchased from Al Gore. Better to lose a battle than to screw up the accounting.

bartbeast on January 21, 2016 at 10:58 AM

From a report done for the military by think tank in 2014;

Conclusion
Those who believe climate change is real can never be proved wrong, while the skeptics find their position and credibility being constantly eroded, because in short, they have to be right all the time. Since this is virtually impossible, and the groundswell of public opinion led by special interest groups, the mainstream media, academia, and the entertainment industry are essentially fully onboard with man-made climate change, the long term position of the skeptics will be increasingly marginalized to the point of being irrelevant. Even though early attempts to mitigate and adapt to climate change will have the appearance of pandering to marginal interests, the movement will gain momentum and demand that the issues be addressed. Since DoD is such a large consumer of energy it will be forced to adopt a leading role in the coming debates.

366 days. Have you forgotten it’s Leap Year?

And biofuels are more dangerous than petroleum fuels. If you spill Diesel or gasolene, it will evaporate until it’s gone. Soybean oil, beef tallow, or bacon grease do not evaporate and leave a slippery residue. If it gets wet, it’s extremely slippery. Ask any truck driver who’s had to fuel his truck with the stuff – there’s always a slick of bio-residue at the pumps. If it’s raining, or someone’s hosing off their windshield and that slick gets wet, it’s almost impossible to walk on. The engine rooms, and fuel-handling areas, of the bio-fueled boats will need steam-cleaned on a regular basis, for safety.
