Video: North Korea claims capability of “wiping out the whole territory of the US all at once”

posted at 6:41 pm on January 14, 2016 by Ed Morrissey

Something tells me Pyongyang might be overselling this a wee bit. North Korea’s mission to the United Nations bragged about successfully building a hydrogen bomb, which they say has the capability of “wiping out the whole territory of the US.” They argue that they need this capability to fend off an attack by the US.

Well, maybe they have an H-bomb, but maybe they don’t:

North Korea’s U.N. mission claimed Wednesday that its successful nuclear bomb test showed that it could now “wipe out” the United States, as the U.N. Security Council grappled with a response to the underground blast.

North Korea called it a hydrogen bomb and said the test “scientifically proved the power of the smaller H-bomb,” though the United States and others expressed skepticism that Pyongyang actually tested a hydrogen bomb for the first time. Nonetheless, whatever the North detonated underground will likely push the country closer toward a fully functional nuclear arsenal, which it still is not thought to have. …

North Korea’s U.N. mission circulated a report from the country’s news agency saying the Jan. 6 test wasn’t to “threaten” or “provoke” anyone but was indispensable to build a nuclear force “to cope with the U.S. ever-more undisguised hostile policy” toward the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the country’s official name.

It said North Korean scientists and technicians “are in high spirit to detonate H-bombs … capable of wiping out the whole territory of the U.S. all at once as it persistently moves to stifle the DPRK.”

The nuclear test still has analysts perplexed. The White House concluded that it wasn’t an H-bomb, but as ABC reports, not all of the evidence is back yet — and it might never be clear from secondary testing just what the North Korean regime tested. Bob Woodruff reports that their missile capacity can only reach Alaska and Hawaii anyway:

The increased threat for now might not be an H-bomb, but that the test advanced Pyongyang’s technology in miniaturization. That would make their missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons, which at the moment the Kim regime can’t do. In that case, their throw distance isn’t a threat to the US as much as it is a real threat isn’t to Japan. North Korea’s missiles can easily reach their long-term nemesis already, and Japan might not want to wait until the Kim regime can successfully arm a missile with a nuclear warhead.

The UN is expected to add more sanctions to the long list already imposed on the DPRK. Kim Jong-un’s father used these provocations to get concessions, but this time it looks as if the new Dear Leader is going out of his way to provoke tougher conditions on his country. That’s curious, and it will be interesting to see whether the UN accommodates that — or backs down.

PappyD61 on January 14, 2016 at 6:57 PM

First they need to define what it means to wipe out the US, but let’s assume it means hitting all the big metropolitan areas of at least 100,000 people. They would need at least a 300 warheads, and each warhead would need to be at least a 1 megaton Hydrogen device, on at least 25 different MIRVs, and each MIRV would would need its own ICBM.

So far, they have none of that. It’s like Kasich saying he now has the ability to wipe out Donald Trump in Iowa.

vnvet on January 14, 2016 at 7:21 PM

Well, we can stick our fingers in our ears and go lalalalala, but the threat that NK or fanatic Islam poses to us is not physically blowing up all our cities with picturesque mushroom cloud creating hydrogen bombs, but successfully detonating EMP weapons over our little heads; and with suicide pilots available, they needn’t be lofted in by missile at all.

Our power grid is not hardened; if it goes down over large parts of the country, we are hosed. People will die en masse without a single case of radiation sickness.

We count on other nuclear powers being rational players.

Silly little sheep go hide your head in the lines in the sand that you drew in the Middle East and were ignored. When do you take these Declarations of War from North Korea seriously. We need to state that we kindly except their Declaration of War. Move over every available air asset to the area. Give the population 5 min notice to get out of Dodge them start saturation bombing of most likely Dear Leader locations and from the DMZ to five miles North. Four hours of this then start carpet bombing on your march to the North. Keep it up no breaks. Civilians will die. Sorry that’s war. They have lived under these lies for generations and it has now become truth for most of them.

Now to the experts that tell us “What me Worry”. What have they said?

1. North Korea has missiles that may be able to hit Alaska and Hawaii. North Korea may or may not have an H Bomb or even an A Bomb, but it is agreed that they have something that is pretty big.

2. Both locations sit on top of active fault zones and are both geologically active.

3. Drop a “very large” device down the throat of Loihi, Kilauea, Mauna Loa,Hualalai, Haleakala. These are active volcanoes that go directly to “hot spot” in the earths mantle. Now watch for the 40 tsunami that will hit and wipe out the USA west coast at the same time that it hits Japan’s East Coast. All Island Nations in between will be gone when the wave passes by at 500 mph.

4. The Aleutian Islands off of Alaska and over 100 others mapped out to include our New England area.

5. This is called the secondary effect from the detonation. It is not the primary explosion that does the real damage but it is the secondary damage that you need to worry about.

6. Not one of these “experts” are addressing this issue.

What me worry? I live on the East Coast. Unless they drop one on the fracture zone at Cape Verde.

Ops! Did I just let out a secret of a new war fare? Scientist have nicely mapped out the fracture zones, stress lines and hot spots around the world. All you have to do is hit them with a large enough force and let “Mother Nature” do the real damage. Don’t need a really big bomb to do this with. Just good maps and a GPS.

China throws a major shit-fit every time a diplomat so much as entertains the notion that Taiwan might be a sovereign and independent country, you can about imagine what would happen if they had a remote inkling that America was going to take further action against the horse China backed during the Korean War. The Kim family dynasty didn’t happen in a vacuum, and any action against them has to hew to the geopolitical reality of the entire region.

So much so that China effectively acted as the Soviet Union’s proxy during the Korean War. As an American, you’re probably not familiar with how important “face” is to Chinese culture. The bond between China and the Norks will not easily be broken, and our hands are tied until it is.

jnelchef on January 15, 2016 at 8:48 AM

Agreed. As far as a military conflict, the “strong horse” is obvious but an EMP weapon would give a lot of blackmail potential to the Norks. For that to be a credible threat, they would have to appear to be willing to commit national suicide i.e. be crazy; but they do a pretty good job of giving the appearance of being the crazy horse.
