Uh oh. Bernie Sanders thinks cops should handle campus rape claims

posted at 3:21 pm on January 12, 2016 by Jazz Shaw

Oh you got trouble.
Right here in Bernie City.
With a capital ‘B’ and that rhymes with ‘C’ and that stands for ‘Cops’

Just when Bernie Sanders was suddenly riding high in the polls in Iowa and New Hampshire he had to go and stick his sensible shoe in his mouth. Sanders came out today and weighed in on the college campus “rape crisis” and dared to say that serious allegations of violent crimes should be handled…

*gasp*

.. by the police. (The Hill)

Bernie Sanders called for all rape accusations on college campuses to be handled through law enforcement, a controversial stance that puts him at odds with many advocates.

Decrying rape and sexual assault on campuses as an “epidemic,” he said schools must not try to handle the issue internally.

“Rape and assault is rape or assault whether it takes place on a campus or a dark street,” he said Monday at the Black and Brown Presidential Forum in Iowa.

“If a student rapes another student it has got to be understood as a very serious crime, it has to get outside of the school and have a police investigation and that has to take place.”

I don’t know how this guy expects to get elected as a Democrat now. That’s a statement which could have come straight off the pages of Hot Air and it probably would have been written by, well… me.

Ben Kamisar is the author of the linked article and I simply love his explanation of why this is such a problem for Sanders. He talks about how such theories of law enforcement have long been met with skepticism by activists on campus. He cites surveys which indicate that overwhelming numbers of students want to have the choice left to them regarding whether to report or to whom. On the first count I have to reluctantly agree with the students. Whether you report or not is, I suppose, up to you, assuming you were really attacked. But by the same token, if you were, I reserve the right to blame you for the next person that your assailant attacks because you weren’t willing to help bring them to justice.

When it comes to the question of who to report to, this is nothing more than one of many chapters in the book of politically correct insanity which makes me come close to suggesting that we should just shut all the colleges down. If there has been a violent crime you report it to the police. You don’t go tell your guidance councilor and ask them to convene a kangaroo court to determine innocence, guilt and punishment. Even if you managed to get the right guy in an actual case of rape or other assault, all the aforementioned kangaroo court can do is expel the attacker, freeing him to go down the road and attack somebody else. And you’ll frequently get the wrong person or simply accuse someone who hasn’t broken any actual laws and deprive them of their constitutional rights.

Sanders is going to get into trouble with this one. All of those young, college age kids who flood his rallies are going to demand an explanation. Of course, given how fast Bernie turned tail and ran when challenged by the Black Lives Matter movement, he may be out apologizing for this one by tomorrow morning.

Bernie to issue “safe space” apology by 4:30 PM today.

Difficultas_Est_Imperium on January 12, 2016 at 3:25 PM

And thus the entitled millenials write off Bernie.

Good riddance.

Not good enough, also have to nullify all the degrees.

I wonder who Bernie thinks should handle Hillary’s crimes while SoS?

Does he support Obama’s DOJ?

Difficultas_Est_Imperium on January 12, 2016 at 3:27 PM

What he meant was that his new People’s Courts will be hearing sex accusations, along with prosecuting the political crimes.

Realist on January 12, 2016 at 3:32 PM

It could be that ONLY Barney Zanders is in a position to be “secretly sane” on a multitude of “issues” the Donkey party has invented.

Given he is a full blown communist he has “cover” to tell the truth on several manias of the left.

harlekwin15 on January 12, 2016 at 3:33 PM

He’ll campaign with a mattress strapped to his back to make up for this.

Flange on January 12, 2016 at 3:37 PM

They know that no actual rapes are occurring on campus, which is why they know the police can not help them. When they say rape, they mean a college girl regretting her actions a week later when the guy does not return her texts. And they know, full well, the law certainly does not consider that rape.

HugoDrax on January 12, 2016 at 3:37 PM

what he can do to redeem himself in the eyes of the proletariat, is to say that the police should also investigate allegations of climate change denial.

HugoDrax on January 12, 2016 at 3:38 PM

I thought the Left wanted this, because they didn’t like that the school controlled the process? That is one of the things they brought up before the UVA rape case was determined to be a hoax.

I happen to agree that the police should handle these accusations. Shouldn’t be controversial.

changer1701 on January 12, 2016 at 3:42 PM

Bernie is more concerned with jobs for American citizens than immigrants and he wants the police to handle crimes? And he’s a socialist. Weird times, weird times.

rbj on January 12, 2016 at 3:42 PM

Hmmm . . . . . Penn State Football legend, Joe Paterno was accused of being complicit, because he didn’t go to the Police, but rather left the details of Mike McQuery’s account with the Campus Police/Security, and the College President/Dean.

Hugo THAT goes without saying, that I acknowledge Barney *could* be sane does not mean you or I get to be free.

The first show trials will be about conservatives, by year 5 he’ll be destroying the uber left. Whomever he does not feed to the grist mill will have a less free but more sane Republic(in the “People’s *of* sense) than we have.

Holy balls … now who’s gonna run for the Democrat nomination?
.
Biden? … Bloomberg? … Kathleen Kane?

listens2glenn on January 12, 2016 at 3:46 PM

He will just change his mind. Dem primary voters have the memory of goldfish. Just say “1%”, “distribution” and “that’s not who we are” and they’ll be fine.

He’ll wait for Webb, Bloomberg, or some other fake conservative to jump into the race as a third party challenger and then endorse that person.

Doomberg on January 12, 2016 at 3:48 PM

Bernie Sanders actually has some good ideas, too bad he is incapable of figuring out how to pay for them. Communists have never been good at economics or in understanding basic human incentive.

I believe Bloomberg has lost all status as even a FAKE conservative/RINO/GOPe.

He’s flat out viewed as a liberal Democrat, and nothing less.

listens2glenn on January 12, 2016 at 3:51 PM

Wow that’s some stable of candidates the democrats have.

Hank_Scorpio on January 12, 2016 at 3:53 PM

@Doomberg,

Will was taken to the woodshed for a column expressing the same sentiment. The endorsement was tongue in cheek. That said, I am sure he would be on the Bloomberg bus.

No, they want to “convict” the guy in a back room where he has no representation, he can’t confront his accuser and sometimes he is banned from talking about it.

cptacek on January 12, 2016 at 3:58 PM

Naaah. It won’t take him NEARLY that much time. I expect to see him groveling before sunset, Eastern Standard Time TODAY!!!

oldleprechaun on January 12, 2016 at 3:59 PM

So, Jazz, how does it feel to be on the same side as ol’ Bernie? Kind of dirty? Need to take a shower?

cptacek on January 12, 2016 at 3:59 PM

What’s going on here is quite simple:
Lefties want equal results in criminalities. Having failed to get their result, they tear down perfectly functioning piece of society and drag innocent people along for the ride.

It’s how they operate.

nobar on January 12, 2016 at 3:59 PM

Polls say Bernie took major lead in IA and NH, so he will have to go mainstream. But by golly, he chose a goddamn wrong way of doing so.

Rix on January 12, 2016 at 4:05 PM

I’ve a niece (college) who lives, breathes, and farts Sanders. The only Limerick we are considering locking out of the compound. I’ll make sure I remind her that Sanders wants the racist cops to take over the investigations.

Limerick on January 12, 2016 at 4:08 PM

Campus cops aren’t capable of dealing with bicycle theft, how will they deal with sexual assault.

RickB on January 12, 2016 at 4:13 PM

Wait. The racists cops who beat up people for “driving while black”? Or just not those?

DoNotPanic on January 12, 2016 at 5:24 PM

I never thought I would actually agree with Bernie Sanders on anything. But maybe he figured out that if Hillary has a monopoly on the vagina vote on campus, as an old white man he should go after the votes of young men who might be unjustly accused.

Not every rape accusation is justified, as we found out from the Duke lacrosse players. The police have the equipment needed to investigate rape cases based on evidence, and can better reach justice for all concerned than a “PC police”on aa aks;jrvtoiunxd;tbkxurtn;bxdirutyn;bsxzeroitunxd;rltfiukn;wit wutcg gybt. on campus on

HugoDrax on January 12, 2016 at 3:37 PM

I somewhat agree…rapes do occasionally happen on college campuses, though from what I gather the numbers are extremely low compared to non-college America.

Probably a bigger problem are girls getting “messed up” at parties and taken advantage of when their judgment is distorted. Fits the definition of rape at some level. From what I’ve gathered over the years rape (including child molestation) happens most frequently at the hands of family, family “friends”, acquaintances, co-workers, etc.; in short, most are probably victimized by someone they know and these incidents largely go un-reported.

Be that as it may, if the police were involved, it would put the fear of God into many of these knuckleheads who do try to get girls drunk-and the feminist knuckleheads would think twice about filing a false report to the real police.

And what should be of concern for any male out there; some of these females are just plain vicious and/or deranged. They may willingly have sex with you, and then later claim you raped them. Especially if they were high and/or drunk/tipsy. Beware. If it sounds too good to be true…

That’s close to fleecing the taxpayers, and the donors volunteered for the sheering.
