Congrats to Baltimore on breaking their all time murder record

posted at 8:41 pm on January 4, 2016 by Jazz Shaw

It’s been a banner year in Charm City… provided you happen to own a funeral home. Just as we are being assured that crime is coming under control (which it is in many areas outside of the inner cities) the citizens of Baltimore report that they’ve broken the all time per capita murder record for a single year. And the telling part of the statistic is that they managed the feat almost entirely after the Freddie Gray riots. (Baltimore Sun)

Blood was shed in Baltimore at an unprecedented pace in 2015, with mostly young, black men shot to death in a near-daily crush of violence.

On a per-capita basis, the year was the deadliest ever in the city. The year’s tally of 344 homicides was second only to the record 353 in 1993, when Baltimore had about 100,000 more residents.

The killings were on pace with recent years in the early months of 2015 but skyrocketed after the unrest and rioting of late April. In five of the next eight months, killings topped 30 or 40 a month.

There is some literal gallows humor in the fact that the Baltimore Sun reports that the record murder rate has led to “renewing calls for new gun laws.” (Roughly 90% of the killings were done with firearms, which won’t come as much of a shock.) I’m not sure if any of the residents have been following the election news for the past couple of months, but their former mayor and governor has been running a campaign based largely on his success in passing some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation in their fair city. Also of note is that fact that this dubious honor was only the per capita record because Baltimore has been bleeding citizens for two decades and the population has plunged in the six figure range. It’s simply not a safe place for law abiding citizens to live.

Perhaps someone could ask Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake what she thinks of the current state of gun laws. Or possibly the better question would be to ask her latest Chief of Police how many of the guns they’ve managed to confiscate from the killers they’ve brought to justice were purchased legally. I can tell you that the FBI already has a pretty good idea and on a good day it might be between six and eight percent of them. The rest were stolen or purchased on the black market by people who don’t go through background checks or stand on line at a sporting goods store to make sure that they’re law abiding citizens.

Meanwhile, Baltimore’s cops have continued to adopt an unofficial “stand back and let it all be” attitude in some sketchy situations, at least until they see what happens to their fellow officers currently facing a series of trials down at the courthouse. Yes, yes… I know. You’re going to remind me that the Ferguson Effect isn’t real and it’s all in my evil little mind, right? Tell that to Baltimore. City Hall has taken a get tough approach to law enforcement, but they decided to target the cops instead of the gangs. The results are on display with this sad milestone.

Will the trolls acknowledge the problem in Baltimore?

Or, will they spend their time squealing that there is no such thing as a Ferguson effect?

HeII, they might not even show up here.

But if we grade on a curve because of affirmative action the murder rate is actually higher.

Yeah; probably because, as in most cities, they put MLK Blvd right in the middle of one of those dangerous, lily white middle class neighborhoods, what with their drug trafficking and car theft, and whatnot…

Don’t worry, Baltimore. The One’s 200 new ATF agents harassing people at gun shows in Ohio, etc., will make it all better.

Just don’t get the idea of even looking crosswise at the high-end SUV full of surly-lookin’ dudes covered with bling cruising slowly along MLK Blvd with their $50K kustom stereo system breaking windows ten blocks away with its low-Hz subwoofers while playing something called “rap”, which is almost but not quite entirely unlike “music”.

Even after they unload about forty gazillion rounds of 9mm on somebody that kind-of-sort-of-maybe looks like he’s the third cousin twice removed of somebody they decided dissed them unintentionally at a Doggy concert ten years ago.

I mean, that would be racist, wouldn’t it?

Where’s B.L.M. on this case. Are they protesting in front of the gang members house? Are they protesting about the drug wars that are claiming their children. Are they asking Elijah Cummings where the $1.5 billion he supposed brought into Baltimore went? Of course not.

Baltimore is just another Democrat run hell hole that will never be normal until they change the way they do things and elect a Republican with a Republican city council to straighten out the mess. Will it happen soon? Of course not, good black people vote for good Democrats and watch as their city deteriorates even more.

bflat879 on January 4, 2016 at 9:20 PM

Obama, Rawlings-Blake and Mosby can take a victory lap.

Random thoughts.

Any estimates on the number of homicides committed with illegal v legal guns?

As I recall, The mayor is not running for re-election. She was tight with the Gray family lawyer. The city settled quickly for 6.7 million. Lawyer’s cut would be 40% of that after taking expenses off the top, say about 3 million. Given how quickly the city settled, presumably with input from the mayor, the lawyer could have made hundreds of thousands per hour.

Who cares if a bunch of young black men kill each other as long as the right someone gets paid off, no?

Ruckus_Tom on January 4, 2016 at 9:45 PM

Baltimore has always been a dump. Most of the crime, murder, and mayhem occurs in poverty-stricken black communities that the white liberals and blue-collar dems could care less about. As long as the crime doesn’t wander into Roland Park or Fed Hill then everything’s fine. The minute some gang banger shoots up a nice suburban or elite urban neighborhood, then you’ll see folks sit up and pay attention. DC is the same way.

I see there’s lots of folks from Balmer here at HA, that’s pretty cool. I’m sure you folks realize that the parts of Balmer where these murders occur are largely unpoliced or the police have decided to pull back. Its no surprise that the gangs are settling scores and the murder rate is up.

From the article:

Arrests plummeted immediately following the unrest, and some officers said they were afraid to do their jobs given the charges filed against their peers in Gray’s death, according to the police union.

Data show that the rate at which police cleared — or closed — homicide cases plummeted this year to about 30 percent, leaving killers on the street and further diminishing the public’s confidence in law enforcement.

Even Fox Butterworth could figure this one out.

It’s called “ghetto-ization” when a selected populace is forced into a certain area of the city to live amongst themselves. What’s it called when everyone else leaves voluntarily?

jbspry on January 5, 2016 at 5:33 AM

If the black on black violence were to decline, if the major problems in black communities were truancy and vandalism rather than murder and assault, one would expect a less adversarial relationship to develop. The problem with trying to fix the relationship by heeling the police is that the real problems for black communities only get worse. Baltimore provides a perfect example of what happens when police are intimidated from doing their jobs…

The Ferguson effect hit the Mall in Louisville, KY last week. Over 2,000 youths rampaging and trashing stores for hours and not a single arrest was made. Very odd considering every square inch of that place in under video surveillance.

Assuming that 300 of the 344 dead people were young black males, that should extrapolate out to, at least, 1,500-2,000 illegitimate chirrins on the welfare roles. Big save for the city down the road.

vnvet on January 5, 2016 at 10:19 AM

My dad used to say that we should have mandatory handgun marksmanship classes in Middle School.

That way when there is an “Urban” shooting, they actually hit the intended targets.

Recently in New Orleans there was a mass shooting in the park.
Over 70 shell casings were recovered (unclear how many revolvers were used.)
16 people were shot and most of them were bystanders, including children.

If those involved would learn to shoot accurately and fatally, there would be a significant reduction of the problem.
