Few answers but plenty of politics in San Bernardino shooting

posted at 8:41 am on December 3, 2015 by Jazz Shaw

Allahpundit hosted the thread last night covering the slaughter in San Bernardino and, as usual, many of the early assumptions about what went on turned out to be entirely wrong. Right out of the gate we should at least pin down what actually is verified, recently updated at NBC News.

At least 14 people were killed and two suspects were dead Wednesday after two people on a mission that authorities described as “possibly terrorism” barged into a holiday party in a California conference room and unleashed a bloodbath…

Seventeen other people were wounded, they said. Authorities said that no motive had been determined and that terrorism had not been ruled out.

That’s short and to the point, eh? We now know that the shooters were Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, 27. Until we find some sort of manifesto or hear from somebody with direct knowledge of the family and their activities (which may still happen later) we can’t pin anything down to an absolute certainty. There were plenty of clues though. While most of the news media seemed hesitant to mention it last night, Farook is indeed a Muslim who had recently “become more devout” and began growing out his beard a couple of years ago. He traveled to Saudi Arabia recently on a pilgrimage and returned with his new wife, Tashfeen.

Does that make him a terrorist? As I said, if we’re going to be 100% loyal to the facts, we can’t call it a duck yet even if it walks and quacks like one. Also, I had a number of questions running through my mind last night as the scene unfolded, some of which pointed to terrorism, but others were simply baffling. It looked like this wasn’t a lonely, whack job American gunman right from the beginning. First of all, there aren’t usually multiple shooters and there’s almost never any women. Second, the center where the shooting took place had a lot of people outside, in the reception area and in offices leading to the conference room. If this were a massive soft target attack such as we’ve seen at schools and movie theaters, why pass by all those easy targets? The shooters headed to the conference room with what seemed to be a purpose. Then we learned that Farook was a co-worker of the group renting out the facility.

That led me to think it might be a workplace grievance situation. But there’s so much more to it which points the other way. This hit obviously took a lot of planning. This was no spur of the moment griping over not getting enough shrimp cocktail at the holiday party. And the target was a government group, though picking out the county health commission as a terror target would be a darned strange choice. That got me wondering whether or not this could be a combination of the two? A would-be jihadist who wanted to strike a government target, but conveniently enough worked for such an institution where he had a beef with his team? There’s simply no way to know.

But I think there will be a lot more information revealed as the investigation rolls out. For just one juicy example, consider the testimony of a local man who almost reported a number of suspicious individuals near the parents’ house, but didn’t want to racially profile them.

A man who has been working in the area said he noticed a half-dozen Middle Eastern men in the area in recent weeks, but decided not to report anything since he did not wish to racially profile those people.

“We sat around lunch thinking, ‘What war they doing around the neighborhood?’” he said. “We’d see them leave where they’re raiding the apartment.”

So in closing… no. I’m not at the 100% mark yet on figuring out exactly what took place. But that duck is starting to waddle and quack more and more.

Was there a 3rd shooter or not?

Bruno Strozek on December 3, 2015 at 11:04 AM

I think the police are covering it up.

They got reports from people inside the building of at least 3 shooters. They were looking for 3 all the way up to the point of saying there were 2 after they had killed the 2 in the SUV.

Even though they said the driver of the SUV got out and ran.

The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, whose office is in Anaheim, today called on the FBI to investigate as a hate crime someone leaving an apparently bullet-riddled copy of the Koran outside an Islamic clothing store in that city.

CAIR reported it. How convenient. I’ll go with another hoax, thank you.

The answer that seems to fit is they were planning on launching attacks in the very near future (that seems clear), and then someone or something at the Christmas party teed him off prematurely.

This whole incident was caused by global warming.

Viator on December 3, 2015 at 11:11 AM

Here’s my question: when that psychopath killed those three Muslim students in Chapel Hill, NC over a parking space, it was immediately decried as a racial incident targeting Muslims when, in fact, the guy was nuts and killed them over a disputed parking space. To this day, none of the people screeching about racial violence has ever backtracked on that.

So, it’s disappointing (but not surprising) when Hillary and BO immediately leap to the “2nd Amendment is bad” argument (and don’t get me started on douchebag Geraldo). I realize that BO is never going to criticize Islam … ever. But, just out of respect for the people who died, just STFU before politicizing everything and, maybe, just maybe, consider that the people who did this in San Bernardino might have been focusing on these people because they weren’t Arab or Muslim or were different.

OrbeaRider66 on December 3, 2015 at 11:12 AM

In that New York Post article about the baby shower, it states:

Farook, born in the United States, met Malik while on a recent trip to her native Saudi Arabia, the LA Times said. He had met her online, the paper reported.

Seems like he got sucked into something very ugly. Or else he was looking for just the right person online, and found her.

Since a confederate flag caused the Charleston shooter to carry out his dirty deed, and it has been banned from everywhere, does that mean Islam should be banned due to it’s influence? I’m down with that.

This episode was clearly due to:

-The Second Amendment.
-Global warming.
-A YouTube video.
-Joblessness.
-School lunches.
-Confederate flags.
-Christmas.
-Republicans.
-Bush.
-Capitalism.
-Fox News.
-Donal Trump.
-Racism.
-The Crusades

We must stop this from happening by:

-Taking guns away from law abiding citizens.
-Giving money to Nigeria and other third world countries.
-Raising taxes.
-Defeating Donald Trump.
-Diversity training.
-Demand the resignation of college presidents who are not communist and/or people of color.
-Creating more leftist teaching positions in colleges and universities across the country.
-Rioting.
-Stealing big screen TVs from Best Buy.
-Allowing Obama to have a third term.
-Legalizing marijuana.

I don’t think they expected to make an escape – or at least realized they’d probably get killed – or they would have ditched the SUV and all the weaponry. Of course, they could also have been total idiot jihadis and didn’t think much past the shooting part (if they planned to make a clean getaway).

whatcat on December 3, 2015 at 11:03 AM

I don’t think they were trying to escape either. They just didn’t count on the police figuring out who they were and where they lived as quickly as they did. My bet is that they were intending more attacks and had their plan disrupted by the speed with which the police responded.

The cops here in California have a lot of experience with gang bangers shooting each other. What may seem like a long time to people watching from a distance really isn’t a long time.

California is a huge, very densely populated area. The police were actually almost frighteningly efficient in tracking them down and Bonnie and Clyde’ing them. It takes time to pull together a response team and get them to the right place. The cops do not have special anti-terror forces just sitting in MRAPS engines idling waiting for a call.

SWAT members are regular cops with special training, who have to be called in, briefed, armored up and then dispatched.

While I am saying this, please keep in mind that I am far from being a big supporter of the police. Generally I do not particularly trust them. IF and yes that is a Donald Trump sized YUGE IF, this was the sole reason or type of situation were the police used these kinds of weapons and tactics I might not be so distrusting.

But I do have to say, my natural inclination to distrust them aside, the San Bernradino Police acquitted themselves with remarkable distinction yesterday.

My theory, for what it’s worth.

The guy and his moll were already setting up for some kind of terrorist activity. Whether real or simply preparatory as a sleeper cell.

He gets into a discussion with a co-worker that doesn’t go his way, probably centered around Christmas and Islam, and he loses it and comes back with blood in his eyes.

I cannot believe they are mocking prayer.

I CANNOT believe they are mocking prayer.

John the Libertarian on December 3, 2015 at 9:22 AM

I can. The new meme is to show that “conservatives sit around praying, while liberals take concrete action to protect people, like banning guns!”

Of course, since this was a terrorist attack (regardless of whether or not Obama calls it “workplace violence”) most of the people pushing this meme look even more petty and foolish than they would have.

Doomberg on December 3, 2015 at 11:26 AM

It could just be me, but “pipe bombs” don’t seem like a typical workplace violence kind of thing.

ProfShadow on December 3, 2015 at 11:26 AM

So Obama just said we don’t know the cause, but added they were looking into “workplace relationships”. He conspicuously omitted mention of a possible “religious motivation”. Isn’t that strange?

One difference I see between this and the Fort Hood shooting is the Fort Hood victims were military, so there would be more of a disciplined, government attitude, of go along to get along. This shooting was at a civilian, though government, building. People involved there may be more likely to speak their minds.

I’m still waiting for Obama to reclassify Fort Hood as religiously motivated. Hasan didn’t seem to have a bone to pick with anyone he worked for. As a Muslim, he didn’t like the military killing his “fellow Muslims” in Afghanistan. That’s a religious motivation.

LashRambo on December 3, 2015 at 11:26 AM

Another unanswered question:

Was this a legitimate attack?

Waiting for John Kerry to weigh in on that one.

PackerBronco on December 3, 2015 at 11:28 AM

Try this on for size Jazz.

Our pal Farook decides he’s down with punishing infidels after lots of innuendo at the local mosque and goat farm. Some nice friends hook him up with a hot jihadi babe and he travels to Saudi to pick her up and get a little specialized training.
He keeps a low profile while hooking up with a few reps from CAIR who keep up the training and help him start stockpiling for Jihad, the movie.

The above explains the IED factory and the neighbor who saw other ME men strolling the ‘hood, and the go-pros.

Somewhere along the way, one of his co-workers insults his boy Mohamed which pisses him off, and since his Jedi training was not complete, our hero goes off script and decides to even the score at an infidel party. He and the new jihad-issue wife decide they will just blow away a few of those nasty Christians on the down-low, then return to everyday life until time for the original plan to blow up a stadium full of non believers is put on the calendar.

The above explains why Jihad Jane was with him, why the limited attack, and of course the masks.

Ties it up pretty neatly. Also scary as hell, because his handlers are still out there, working the next martyr to be.

Isn’t it interesting how CAIR in Anaheim was able to arrange a press conference so quickly yesterday afternoon with Fayood’s brother in law?

Or the IED / bomb factory that is otherwise known as their home? The trip to Saudi Arabia – since family say they’ve been married for several years?

It’s like the immediate call from the reprobates of the left for more gun control. Nothing but a deflection from the root problem.

The willful ignorance and deliberate obfuscation of fundamentalist Islam at the root of jihadi terrorism – and continuing the nearly 1400 year long war being waged against the Western nations goes beyond being feckless or incompetence. It’s enabling and collaborating with our enemies in this war.

Of course he’s weary. He and the left pray daily for an anti-government militia attack so Obama has an excuse to ban the sale of guns and criminalize conservatism, and instead he’s stuck dealing with Muslim “workplace violence” attacks constantly. “It is possible” that the deadly shooting in San Bernardino “was terrorist-related, but we don’t know,” President Obama said Thursday morning.

Speaking from the Oval Office after a briefing from FBI Director James Comey, Obama emphasized the need to “get the facts” before making a judgment about the case.

It is “possible this was workplace-related,” he said.

“At this stage, we do not yet know why this terrible event occurred,” he said.

But, he added, “right now, it’s just too easy” for people who are determined to kill others to “get access to weapons.”

It’s almost as if there are multiple idiots using one account, and they sometimes forget to check each other’s work.

Either that, or this dim bulb is nuts.

The police, luckily enough, happened to be conducting practice exercises somewhere nearby, I recall one station reporting yesterday. This think could have been much worse.

Report: Farook was in touch with more than one international terrorism suspect

Don’t you hate it when that happens.

Today:

Interesting the media is so quick as well as commenters to label this guy a terrorist and blame Islam but when the white guy shot up planned parenthood the other day there wasn’t quite the same rush to call him a terrorist and blame Christianity.

I wonder if the 3rd shooter was George Zimmerman, after all he is “white hispanic” you know.

Senator Philip Bluster on December 3, 2015 at 1:03 PM

Steven’s made multiple requests for military protection in Libya months before the Benghazi attack took place on 9/11. Both President Obama and the State Department refused to provide that military protection. The fast response shown by the San Bernardino Police Department has been very impressive. To bad we have leaders in the White House who seem unable to provide such fast reaction-time in protection for their employees who work overseas in foreign country’s.

Curt. You make a good point about politricks. His comments used to be full of misspellings and horrible grammar. Lately they haven’t had any of those. And i know xbox doesnt have grammar games…

Until we find some sort of manifesto or hear from somebody with direct knowledge of the family and their activities (which may still happen later) we can’t pin anything down to an absolute certainty.

I believe I also read that they recently had a baby. If so, another thing that can be pinned down to an absolute certainty is the fact that it was more important for them to destroy many more lives than to live with their own flesh and blood. I’m reminded of Golda Meir’s famous quote about having peace in the perpetual Arab-Israeli mess.

We will have peace when they learn to love their children more than they hate us.

The pathology which had ravaged their minds is the same pathology which Golda Meir spoke about. The tactics, goal, and strategy absolutely fit any reasonable definition of what we know to be terrorism. And the brand is the same that Israel has dealt with seemingly since her independence.

What favors are we doing and to whom by not calling this what it most certainly is?

Sorry Bishop, but that is not funny in the least. It’s the most tragic image I’ve seen in some time. I weep for all the little boys who have a hole in their hearts due to their absent fathers.

What if we started a new hashtag #blackboysmatter?

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) took to the Senate floor Thursday morning to tell colleagues her heart is broken over the shooting in San Bernardino.

“When I woke up this morning, I’d hoped that yesterday’s tragedy in San Bernardino was just an unimaginable nightmare,” she said.

Congress needs to act to create a national policy on who can have military-style weapons and keeping people on the no-fly list from purchasing weapons, she said.

“Once you know something is happening and you can do something about it and you don’t do something about it, you’re liable. Maybe not in a legal sense. In the moral sense,” she said.
