Statistical anomaly: journalists 4 times as likely to be Democrats

posted at 3:21 pm on November 9, 2015 by Jazz Shaw

Kelly Riddell at the Washington Times has some shocking news which will doubtless send many of you to the fainting couch. If you check the number of journalists covering politics in America today who can be identified as belonging to one party or the other, the spread is actually nowhere near the breakdown you find among all the voters in the country.

A mere 7 percent of journalists identify as Republicans, and when they do give money to political campaigns they usually donate to Democrats, lending evidence to Republican presidential candidates’ claims that they are facing a hostile audience when they deal with the press.

As Republican candidates prepare for their fourth debate of the primary season Tuesday in Milwaukee, the people doing the questioning are increasingly in the spotlight, with their motives being questioned by the campaigns, voters and even by their fellow journalists.

And self-proclaimed Democratic journalists outnumber Republicans by 4-to-1, according to research by Lars Willnat and David Weaver, professors of journalism at Indiana University. They found 28 percent of journalists call themselves Democrats, while just 7 percent call themselves Republicans — though both numbers are down from the 1970s. Those identifying as independent have grown.

If there’s anything shocking in this study it’s that they actually found 35% of the journalists who were either willing to admit or could be traced to identifiable evidence that they were “officially” entangled with one party or the other. For the most part, unless one falls into the “opinion journalism” school of employment such as the evening line-up at MSNBC or Fox, identifying yourself is considered a naughty mark on your resume. Most of the folks doing what’s considered “hard news” go out of their way to avoid such a tag. When I interviewed Jake Tapper earlier this year he mentioned that he doesn’t even vote in national elections, even though the process is entirely private, just to keep himself out of the fray.

There are exceptions, of course. One of the most famous would be George Stephanopoulos, who actually worked for the Clintons directly before going into the news game, and then continued to work for them indirectly through his efforts for the Clinton Foundation. The results in terms of unbiased work for ABC have been obvious and disappointing to say the least.

The real problem here isn’t the 35% who can be identified by party affiliation; at least you can identify them and take that into account when judging their coverage. It’s the other 65% who are found at all levels of the business right up to the very top. Frankly, once you round all of them up I’d be shocked if even 7% of them showed up as Republicans. The media is dominated by liberals in a hive mind configuration, much like the nation’s university system. Liberals seem to be more drawn to the programs of studies which lead to such careers and once they’ve basically taken over the highest echelons of the profession they control the hiring of who else gets in the door later. It’s really a self-fulfilling prophecy in that regard.

So what to do about it? This is the portion of the column where I’m supposed to chime in with a laundry list of suggestions for how to correct the situation and restore some semblance of balance. Sadly, I only have one and it involves the ugly, dirty, use of money. If the conservatives are better at anything in this society it’s making money. So buy up more media outlets and take control of the hiring yourself. Beyond that… I’m fresh out of ideas.

Another interesting study– with entirely predictable results– would be how many “journalists” have or will work for a Democrat administration or leftist organization in their course of their “careers”?

Today’s “journalist” is nothing but a social justice warrior with a phone or camera and a keyboard.

Directions to Claude Rains’ grave:

Take Interstate 93 North from Boston into New Hampshire. Get off at Exit 24.

At the bottom of the ramp, turn right and follow US Rt. 3/NH Rt. 25 South for 9 miles. Turn left (East) on NH Rt. 25B.

Take NH Rt. 25B 3 miles East to the town of Centre Harbor. Bear left and follow the road down to NH Rt. 25. Turn left, and immediately get in the left lane. At the lights turn left (North) onto Bean Road.

Follow Bean Road North for less than 2 miles; on the right you will see 2 tiny cemeteries enclosed by white picket fences. Claude and his wifey are in the second, smaller cemetery in the back on the left. Can’t miss their stones.

I like the idea of forbidding the direct hire of journalists by Congressmen, Senators, and the President. Make an ambitious journo write press releases for breakfast cereal or run a completely independent blog for a few years before they are eligible for hire. Get them out from around the water cooler with the folks in a newsroom who want to report the news, not audition for their next gig.

If it is a job that requires no thinking or no hard work, Liberals excel at it. It is no small wonder that almost all journalists are Liberal.

Maybe it’s a culture that displaces other cultures. It doesn’t have any philosophical excuse for (actual) tolerance or (actual) plurality. In that way, it gains exclusivity.

So wretched and nasty that everyone else slowly migrates out of the room, basically.

Who cares what party affiliation journalists are?

The bigger question is the party affiliation/ideology of the executives, owners, and CEOs of their various parent companies.

Remember these questions from journalists in 2008?

Senator Obama, we read in your book that you used cocaine. How long did you use cocaine? Did you use crack? When did you quit? Were you addicted? Did you get treatment? Did you go to crack houses? Did you sell cocaine? Why did you take cocaine? Who did you use cocaine with? Did you ever steal to support your habit? What other drugs did you take? Should somebody who has used cocaine be President? Is this a good example for our kids? What about the nuke button?

Thank you Senator Obama for answering our questions in this interview.

You’re getting the causality wrong- any field where people interact with a wide variety of people tends to lean democratic. Conservatism depends on having very little exposure to the variety of life so that you can maintain a narrow view.

Its articles like the following that give me reason to hope. I have read two years ago or more that the tipping point is 2020 when the country will decidedly tip conservative. The State’s result maybe an indication of good things to come at the federal level. And that the only way that republicans can screw this up is to agree to amnesty. Remember Obama had 5 million less votes in 2012 than in 2008. If only republicans put up an articulate true conservative.

I think you have it backwards. The very same applies to Hollywood, Academics, Psychiatrists/Psychologists, and Public Relations. Anyone who doesn’t toe the leftist line is ostracized. Odd you didn’t mention the entire medical field.

Conservative media vastly exaggerates the few cases of actual suppression of alternate views. The simple truth is conservative claims fall apart when subjected to actual scrutiny.

In terms of medical fields those that actually interact with people like pediatrics tend liberal while whose who insulate themselves from people and rarely talk to a patient (like surgeons) tend conservative. That is their base. You have no understanding of the make up of our country. Republicans need the vote of everyone who is not a liberal or the Democrats will win again.

Hank_Scorpio on November 9, 2015 at 4:49 PM

Conservative media vastly exaggerates the few cases of actual suppression of alternate views. The simple truth is conservative claims fall apart when subjected to actual scrutiny.

Stop lying.

The simple truth is leftism, progressivism, communism, totalitarianism, socialism … whatever you’re calling what you believe today depends entirely on suppression of countering ideas. It’s what was done in every leftist country to date. It’s what every leftist group is doing today.

Take for example how skeptics of the global warming scare are treated. They’re called deniers, they’re attacked verbally, physically, they’re fired from their jobs, the government threatens to jail them and uses it power to silence them. Now they’re trying to use litigation to get companies to toe the leftist line.

In terms of medical fields those that actually interact with people like pediatrics tend liberal while whose who insulate themselves from people and rarely talk to a patient (like surgeons) tend conservative. Which fits pretty well with what I said so I’m not sure why you brought it up as if it were a counter point.

LOL! You’ve been lying to yourself (and us) here on Hot Gas for ages; first you believed “as fact” that Israel “sank” the USS Liberty in 1967 (which was debunked in 30 seconds), and then you lied to yourself and believed “as fact” that the Allies “deposed” Hitler, Mussolini and Hirohito after World War 2. That Lie took even less than 30 seconds to debunk.

As for 2012, the main reason O’bama won re-election that year was because he abandoned the college graduate vote, which Romney won handily. Instead, O’bama had to depend on the high school dropout vote, increasing his already-record share of that mentally deficient voting bloc from 70% in 2008 to 80%+.

Were the 2010, 2012, and 2014 elections fun for your Democrats? Nope. In fact, since your Sock Puppet was inaugurated in 2009, your Party has been decimated in Congress and at the State and local levels. All because of a half-black dude from a State that won’t even name a beach after him!

Thanks for the laughs, Kenny. You illustrate perfectly the stupidity and shallowness of today’s Democrat!

One of the more brainless slogans of the left. Most wars have been fought against white people, right up until and through World War 2. We wouldn’t even have fought the Japanese in that war if they hadn’t decided to bomb Pearl Harbor. And our allies against the Japanese included Korea, China, and the Philippines.

WW2 marked the end of fighting with white people, because all the white people lived in Europe, and all of Europe was either on our side, or on the losing side, or controlled by the Soviets during the Cold War.

With Europe out of the picture and no wars in Africa, any one left would necessarily be brown. And from that incidental fact, the left — pathetically — tries to prove racism.

If the conservatives are better at anything in this society it’s making money. So buy up more media outlets and take control of the hiring yourself. Beyond that… I’m fresh out of ideas.

Even if they did, the overwhelming output of the J schools is leftist, so who would they hire?

AesopFan on November 9, 2015 at 6:10 PM

The media is dominated by liberals in a hive mind configuration, much like the nation’s university system. Liberals seem to be more drawn to the programs of studies which lead to such careers and once they’ve basically taken over the highest echelons of the profession they control the hiring of who else gets in the door later. It’s really a self-fulfilling prophecy in that regard.

Maybe it’s a culture that displaces other cultures. It doesn’t have any philosophical excuse for (actual) tolerance or (actual) plurality. In that way, it gains exclusivity.

So wretched and nasty that everyone else slowly migrates out of the room, basically.

Indeed.

AesopFan on November 9, 2015 at 6:11 PM

In terms of medical fields those that actually interact with people like pediatrics tend liberal while whose who insulate themselves from people and rarely talk to a patient (like surgeons) tend conservative. Which fits pretty well with what I said so I’m not sure why you brought it up as if it were a counter point.

Tlaloc on November 9, 2015 at 4:48 PM

As a general surgeon — I can tell you know jack and squat about my profession. I spend the overwhelming majority of my day talking to people, mostly patients.

Then again, I guess speaking with authority about subjects you know nothing about is what liberals do. (gun control, medical care, economics)

Aren’t lefties a hoot? They’d be great fun at parties if they weren’t so dangerous.

darwin on November 9, 2015 at 6:30 PM

f I remember correctly it had a lot to do with the more children born to those religious (conservative) compared to those secular (liberal).

That’s because libs stick it in the wrong hole.

…you’ve spent the whole thread confirming you’re an assh*le…and what’s hilarious…is that you are not the least bit embarrassed!

You’re getting the causality wrong- any field where people interact with a wide variety of people tends to lean democratic. Conservatism depends on having very little exposure to the variety of life so that you can maintain a narrow view.

Tlaloc on November 9, 2015 at 3:55 PM

You’re getting the causality wrong.

Individualists are less motivated toward assimilating others to their own worldview than collectivists, by definition. It’s that simple.

Hollywood? Academics? Psychiatrists/Psychologists? Public Relations? All heavily liberal.

Precisely.

TL;DR: Leftists are Borg. In other news, water has been found to be wet.

GrumpyOldFart on November 9, 2015 at 9:32 PM

Tlaloc – all the professions you note are generally the stupidest people on campus based upon test scores. Psychology degrees are almost worthless and we are beginning to understand that what passes for counseling is often more damaging than doing nothing. J schools are famous for entrants who couldn’t sniff a science college or business school admission.

Education college entrants I think were the poorest qualified higher education applicants of any other field in a study a few years ago.

Should I go on? The party that thinks they are smarter are in actuality some of the least qualified dumbest students on the planet. They choose to ignore history, are anti-vaxxers, believe in AGW despite the fact there is no scientific observations to support the thesis, and have a totalitarian outlook of do what I say, not what I myself choose to do.
