Video: Politically correct speech codes on campus are ridiculous, says …

posted at 10:41 am on September 15, 2015 by Ed Morrissey

Well, well, well. Have political correctness and speech codes at colleges and universities finally jumped the shark? If so, I’m happy to give credit to President Barack Obama for this scolding yesterday in Des Moines, Iowa. True, it comes in response to a proposal from Ben Carson to start withholding federal funds from colleges that suppress speech, but it’s still worth praising:

“It’s not just sometimes folks who are mad that colleges are too liberal that have a problem. Sometimes there are folks on college campuses who are liberal and maybe even agree with me on a bunch of issues who sometimes aren’t listening to the other side. And that’s a problem, too,” Obama said during a town hall on Monday in Des Moines, Iowa.

“I’ve heard of some college campuses where they don’t want to have a guest speaker who is too conservative. Or they don’t want to read a book if it has language that is offensive to African Americans, or somehow sends a demeaning signal towards women,” Obama continued.

“I’ve got to tell you, I don’t agree with that either. I don’t agree that you, when you become students at colleges, have to be coddled and protected from different points of views,” he said. …

“Anybody who comes to speak to you and you disagree with, you should have an argument with them. But you shouldn’t silence them by saying, you can’t come because I’m too sensitive to hear what you have to say. That’s not the way we learn, either,” Obama said Monday in Iowa.

Carson suggested financial penalties for colleges that exhibit “extreme political bias,” while pledging to keep the Department of Education:

Ben Carson would keep the Department of Education if elected president, but add oversight for colleges and universities, the Republican candidate told a crowd of more than 100 people during a stop Friday in Corning.

“The other function I would give to the Department of Education is monitoring our institutions of higher learning — colleges and universities — for extreme political bias. If it exists, they get no federal funding,” Carson said.

The retired neurosurgeon proposed ramping up STEM education to place science, technology, engineering and math skills at the forefront of public education.

Obama called this an idea that “might work in the Soviet Union,” and goes into a lengthy rebuttal to it in an answer to a question from a North High School student. After slapping at Carson’s intellect, Obama says that college is supposed to “expand your horizons” by experiencing a lot of ideas, debates, and analysis about the wider world, “getting out of your narrow point of view and having a broader point of view.” At times, the opposing views would be “infuriating” to Obama, but he learned from them. “That’s what college is all about,” he says, but extends it past Carson’s proposal all the way to political correctness and speech codes (starting at 40:28, via the Daily Caller):

He’s certainly right on the larger point. Perhaps having this lecture from Obama will start having some impact in Academia about their shocking disposal of free speech in favor of indoctrination and intimidation. Either that, or schools will just block this speech on YouTube. But if it’s the former, then this may be an only-Nixon-can-go-to-China moment, as in only Obama could embarrass Academia enough to snap out of it. Play this for your favorite academic, and don’t offer a trigger warning, either.

After slapping at Carson’s intellect, Obama says

Obama probably thinks that Carson is like all of those other doctors he claims just ‘yank out tonsils’ and ‘cut off limbs’ to make a buck.

‘Well, I haven’t said anything about me being the only one to do anything, so let me try that. I’m the only one to separate Siamese twins. The only one to operate on babies while they were still in mother’s womb. The only one to take out half of a brain, although you would think, if you go to Washington, that someone had beat me to it.’

I can only imagine the rigorous education and exposure to other viewpoints Obama experienced at…Occidental and Columbia and Harvard.

I can tell Obama has seriously engaged with opposing viewpoints by the way he accurately and seriously and honestly deals with them in the public square.

gwelf on September 15, 2015 at 10:53 AM

There is no value in publicly supporting speech codes. Most Americans have no clue just how fascist many, if not most, college campuses have become. And if they did know they would be appalled. So poo pooing these speech codes is a no-brainer. Remember, Obama is also publicly opposed to higher insurance premiums and deductibles. So his flapping gums is no test of anything. It just means his lips are moving, which in turn means he’s lying.

I think Obama doesn’t even understand how far this stuff has gone on campuses. It’s been a long time since he was at Harvard and Columbia. He wouldn’t recognize either one of them now.

But notice he didn’t touch the subject of sexual assault and harassment. His Education Department is responsible for the horrendous abuses in that area.

ROTFLMAO…. Time to put the crack pipe down and back slowly away from it Ed. Academia in America is controlled by Marxists. The only time they are interested in the free exchange of idea’s, is when they are in the extreme minority and cannot force their ideological view points down everyone’s throats.

When they are in control, they allow no free exchange of idea’s, because a free exchange of idea’s shows just how bankrupt and evil their ideology actually is.

arand on September 15, 2015 at 11:42 AM

UCLA, University of California Los Angeles, is located in Los Angeles California and is one of the ten UC campuses in California. UC is among the leaders in the academic movement toward negating people’s freedom of speech and expression. These would be arbiters of speech and behavior invariably try to make the argument that any speech that some member of their campus may find offensive is speech that should be forbidden because they claim to stand for inclusiveness and proudly point to their very diverse student body whose members hail from nations around the world. As a matter of fact, there has been much discussion of ‘trigger warnings’ being implemented across the fields of study because, apparently, UC finds their diverse student body so fragile that even great literature may send some of them into fits of the vapors.

How surprised they must be to wake to this new campaign launched by the city of Los Angeles:

L.A. Touts Itself as “Northern Capital of Latin America” for 2024 Olympic Bid

From the looks of this campaign by Los Angeles in their bid to become the site of the 2024 Olympics, the student body, faculty, administration and regents of the entire UC system will likely need trigger warnings and buckets of smelling salts.

Every year universities in this nation actively recruit about 500,000 foreign students to come to this nation on student visas, UCLA among them. These students come from all over the world, not just “Latin America”, and Los Angeles used to be one of the most ethnically and racially diverse cities in the nation as immigrants settled there because of the diversity they found in Los Angeles. This diversity and open arms of Los Angeles was one reason that foreign students felt comfortable choosing UCLA to pursue their field of study and professional credentials and this has made UCLA a very profitable operation for the UC system.

Apparently, that is a bygone era and Los Angeles has now embraced a new monoculture as “The Northern Latin capital of Latin America” and is actively promoting their new anti-diversity image.

It will be interesting to see how many gallons of smelling salts will be required as UC regents and academics try to adjust to this new monocultural anti-diversity being embraced and openly touted by the city of Los Angeles.

RSbrewer on September 15, 2015 at 11:50 AM

The better idea would be to defund the Department of Education and have the feds get out of higher education as well, including funding and college loans. Make universities succeed on merit.

Techster64 on September 15, 2015 at 11:57 AM

All good in theory. Carson’s idea of “monitoring” colleges and yanking funding from the ones that express “extreme political bias” is that the only ones who would “express extreme political bias” are the ones that say Marx was wrong.

But then, it’s probably all a moot point: all the schools they want to shut down they will get on homosexual tolerance; i.e. that they allow people to disagree on homosexuality. That’s going to be grounds for yanking accreditation soon, I’m sure.
