The next wave of “body diversity”: Disabled by choice

posted at 12:01 pm on June 2, 2015 by Ed Morrissey

If a person can claim gender based on their mental and emotional orientation, what other forms of “body diversity” exist? The rapid acceptance and even celebration of Caitlyn Jenner’s debut onto the social scene (and social media) may soon bring another form of body diversity into the light, or so the Canada National Post argues today. “We need to move away from pathologizing people,” says Clive Baldwin, including those who chop off their limbs or fake paralysis in order to live as disabled people. “For many, amputation is the only way forward,” the St. Thomas University, Frederickton professor tells Sarah Boesveld, and “it isn’t beyond the pale.”

Really?

When he cut off his right arm with a “very sharp power tool,” a man who now calls himself One Hand Jason let everyone believe it was an accident.

But he had for months tried different means of cutting and crushing the limb that never quite felt like his own, training himself on first aid so he wouldn’t bleed to death, even practicing on animal parts sourced from a butcher. …

People like Jason have been classified as ‘‘transabled’’ — feeling like imposters in their bodies, their arms and legs in full working order.

“We define transability as the desire or the need for a person identified as able-bodied by other people to transform his or her body to obtain a physical impairment,” says Alexandre Baril, a Quebec born academic who will present on “transability” at this week’s Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Ottawa.

“The person could want to become deaf, blind, amputee, paraplegic. It’s a really, really strong desire.”

When I first read this, I had to double-check the references and do a little research to make sure this wasn’t something the Daily Currant had launched in the wake of Jenner’s re-emergence. Dr. Clive Baldwin appears to check out as advertised, as the Canada Research Chair in Narrative Studies at St Thomas University, Fredericton. “Narrative studies” sounds a little ambiguous as a discipline, but his website states that he lectured in the UK on mental health in social work and on dementia studies. A YouTube search for more on the topic raised videos spanning at least four years, including an unfortunate Jerry Springer segment, which Springer himself said would be the strangest segment he’d ever done. That’s a tall order, one I’d really prefer not to research, but it’s probably correct. Feel free to click the link, but I’ll pass on embedding it here.

So this is not a hoax, or at least the story isn’t. The impulse to mutilate one’s body in various ways has been known and documented for a long time, but only recently have we begun to accept it as an expression of self rather than a pathology, as Dr. Baldwin dismissively notes. The measure of the latter, though, has never been the sincerity of those impulses but their destructive nature and disconnection from reality.

This brings us to Caitlyn Jenner, of course, and other transgender people who have operations to change their gender to match their mental and emotional identity. There doesn’t seem to be much of a moral or medical difference between surgically removing one’s sexual genitalia to address gender identity issues and removing a leg, arm, or eyeballs to address “transability” issues. One can argue that there is a difference between do-it-yourself “modifications” to chop off one’s arm and a surgeon to remove male genitalia and construct artificial genitalia in its place, and there are differences. The latter has been made much safer, of course, and much more socially acceptable, but that’s only a matter of being ahead on the moral-relativity curve. Surgeons can do amputations, rob eyes of sight, and the like, just as safely as they now perform gender-reassignment surgeries.

That is, in fact, what Baldwin and others propose — to supply medical treatment not to the mental issues that drive these impulses, but to conduct drastic body modifications to cater to those impulses. It won’t be long before we start hearing arguments about the dangers of allowing people to do these amputations and the like on their own as a way to press for allowing and even demanding such surgeries, just the way some now expect taxpayers to pay for gender-reassignment surgeries for prisoners and people on public medical coverage.

Color me much less sanguine than Amanda or AP on this point. We’re celebrating the end of natural and objective truth, and turning dysfunction into virtue on the basis of celebrity. Not only that, but many people suffer from disability without much choice in the matter — my wife, for one, who lost her sight at 24 from diabetic retinopathy. This turns their challenges into sport or status symbols in a very odd manner, and mainstreaming it the way Baldwin suggests legitimizes the fetishization of their pains and struggles.

I don’t wish Caitlyn Jenner any ill will, and I have no problem addressing people by the names or pronouns they wish. That, after all, is their business. However, don’t expect me to wave flags as the parade of self-mutilation keeps processing toward eventual oblivion, regardless of whether that makes me out of step and hopelessly old-fashioned. Western society has become unmoored from objective truth in favor of  anything goes, and I don’t think the end game looks terribly promising — especially with the parallel tyranny of the Tolerance Police punishing any dissent along the way.

As someone who is disabled and also takes care of a disabled wife (I sympathize with Ed as one of my wife’s disabilities is blindness from diabetic retinopathy) I would like to add my perspective. Being disabled SUCKS! I wouldn’t wish it on anyone and for the life of me cannot understand someone who actively seeks to become disabled.
From the article on the National Post

He suggests this is just another form of body diversity — like transgenderism — and amputation may help someone achieve similar goals as someone who, say, undergoes cosmetic surgery to look more like who they believe their ideal selves to be.

Anyone, and I do mean anyone, who would try and define self harm as just another lifestyle should be locked up in a mental institution.

Ed concluded the quote just before the punchline, which is this:

Researchers in Canada are trying to better understand how transabled people think and feel. Clive Baldwin, a Canada Research Chair in Narrative Studies who teaches social work at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, N.B., has interviewed 37 people worldwide who identify as transabled.

Some of his study participants do draw parallels to the experience many transgender people express of not feeling like they’re in the right body. Baldwin says this disorder is starting to be thought of as a neurological problem with the body’s mapping, rather than a mental illness.

Let’s say Baldwin is right. The feeling that one’s body is not as it should be–that one has one arm too many, for instance–is not a mental illness. Let’s say it’s a “neurological problem with the body’s mapping.” What does that suggest? It suggests that there is something in the brain of the person who feels this way that is not working properly. Now apply that same logic to the transgendered.

That may not be a form of mental illness. I don’t really care how you characterize or categorize such things. The point is that a person’s brain is not functioning in an entirely healthy fashion. In the same way that chemical imbalances in the brain may result in depression or schizophrenia, and as such are treatable, a problem with the body mapping function of the brain ought to be capable of being treated. If we do not yet know how to do so, doctors need to get on it right away, before society is transformed in the interest of glorifying people whose brains do not operate the way they should.

Ask yourself this: would any sane person tell someone suffering from depression, “hey, you’re just different! Celebrate diversity!” Would we tell a schizophrenic, “embrace the voices in your head!” Of course not. The compassionate thing would be to get them the help they need before they do something irreversible (like cutting off a limb or mutilating your genitalia). But with transgender people, the sexual ideology that has captured much of the population demands that they be affirmed, celebrated, and even held up as role models, rather than gotten the help they need.

People who think they should be disabled are sick. People who think they are inhabiting a body that’s the wrong sex are sick. A society that celebrates either is sick unto death.

This crap is getting outta hand (ba doom do chish). I keep visualizing a picture of Bugs Bunny looking at the camera and holding up a sign with a drawing of a screw and a baseball on it.

Behold the Slippery Slope in all its glory. You have no idea on how much I loathe people that dismiss the Slippery Slope as a logical fallacy – we’re not dealing with exclusive logic here – it’s LEGAL PRECEDENT.

So this guy “feels” disabled, so he makes it so and cuts his own arm off. Applause up, everyone. Well ok, not everyone.

The complete embrace and acceptance of the utterly insane as normal. Courageous. I am also amused at how the trannies are pushing to have their mental illness normalized, but are rushing to discriminate against this or species dysphoria. Funny how they try to decide who gets that sweet sweet “protected class status”.

Next, the guy with species dysphoria (who honestly thinks he’s a horse) grafts a tail to his @ss, and has horseshoes hammered to his hands and feet and is then permitted to compete in the Kentucky Derby to thunderous applause. I mean, why not? We as a nation are already being gaslit into believing this crap is common place and perfectly acceptable. So why not have a guy compete against horses? Maybe hobble some horses so he can keep up?

I have a wild notion, stay with me – why don’t we diagnose these people with the mental illnesses that they clearly have and medicate them? Crazy, I know, but it just might work.

I swear to the Lawd above that at some point reality got f’ed on a cosmic level, or some hostile nation or alien species bombed us with dumb-ass gas.

Hell, why stop there. Let people mutilate themselves to look like cats, dogs, dinosaurs. Let them walk around meowing, barking, roaring. What is the difference between this and the insanity that Jenner and others like him are subjecting us too.

It’s all good. Everything goes. There are no rights or wrongs.

Humans are gods, they can do what they want. No one should get in the way. Why soon we might be able to kill children and adults and not just unborn babies in order to feel good about ourselves. Yippee.

But wait… your just talking a slippery slope! Like there are no slippery slopes.

The problem with that is that half the psychiatric medications that are prescribed to people have wild effects on their minds and turn them, every so often, into homicidal spree killing monsters. Of course, the upside to that – to the left – is that they then get to blame guns and try and stomp all over the 2nd amendment.

The fact is that when a society has so many disturbed, twisted, demented individuals in it … it just isn’t long for this world and its death is protracted and ugly.

Feeling compelled to become a woman or chop off a hand might well be declared legitimate by public decree of the timid, but so is mental illness. Some people do, as a matter of fact, have scrambled eggs for brains.

This is awful, and it reminded me of an even more monstrous related issue, in which people want their children to be disabled (genetically). From all the way back in 2006, The New York Times had a story about parents doing this to their children, and highlighted a case of a deaf lesbian couple who wanted to raise a deaf child, so they searched around until they found both a deaf sperm donor and a fertility specialist who would agree to IVF (many will not participate in deliberately conceiving a handicapped baby. I cannot fathom how anyone could be so selfish to do that to a child, when that child will outlive them and deal with the effects of their selfishness for a lifetime. At least the people discussed in this article are doing it to themselves.

Horologium on June 2, 2015 at 6:46 PM

Here’s the problem as I see it. Again, just my opinion and I could very well be wrong but society has to have some type of structure. When you have 350 million people, all doing their own thing, all unwilling to say “As a society we must have some guidelines for morality and the family unit” you cease to be a society and end up more of a collection of people with no common purpose or goals. If you study history it was these conditions that lead to the demise of past cultures.
I know, who are you to decide what type of behavior is acceptable? I don’t, society does. If society abdicates that role then we run in to a “wild west” mentality. Everything goes, all is acceptable, laws break down and society crumbles. I would also point out that it is not only people who decide what is abnormal but nature as well. When you talk about “transabled” or “transgendered”, these conditions are not normal in nature. If it’s not normal….it’s abnormal. Abnormality in nature is never tolerated by nature itself. Left to its own devices, that which is abnormal in nature dies out.
Just look at a human beings normal lifespan and the lifespan of those born with abnormalities. Without medical intervention (which in itself could be construed as abnormal as it doesn’t let nature take its natural course) those with abnormalities would quickly die out (which I am not advocating).

If we keep going this way you won’t be able to tell.

Baldwin says this disorder is starting to be thought of as a neurological problem with the body’s mapping, rather than a mental illness.

And if the chemical imbalance causing that goes away… do you hsve a plan for getting your arm or leg back? No?

That seems somewhat problematic.

Ok, I have a serious question. Not trying to gross out anyone. Does Jenner still have his “part”? Does he plan to eliminate it? How would he excrete or perform sexually then? And, if he keeps it, wouldn’t that be quite a shock when he gets out of the shower and looks in the mirror? He will have a feminine, obviously surgically-altered face, big fake breasts… and his “part”? Something just seems wrong with this picture.

I don’t accept that choosing to do things like this to oneself are the actions of a psychologically well person.

Is it a good idea to spread pro-transgender propaganda to young children? This story is all over mainstream media. It isn’t something to be celebrated.

“The person could want to become deaf, blind, amputee, paraplegic. It’s a really, really strong desire.”

What if someone has a really, really strong desire to kill themselves? Should we congratulate them (preferably before they offed themselves), and say how courageous they are, how proud we are of them? What if like the left wing nutjob who went to kill those at the Family Research Council for being homophobes and on the SPLC’s list of “hate groups”. Should be applaud him for following his desires?

Society frowns on hurting others, but isn’t it also morally wrong to hurt yourself, to take away your own abilities, to snuff them out. And what about these surgeons who do these transsexual surgeries? What ghouls they must be!

In a related story, the neurologist V. Ramachandran (per his book “Phantoms in the Brain”) has successfully worked with phantom limb pain in amputees. It’s a real condition. Say you lost your left leg, but have pain as if you’re hitting your left foot with a ball peen hammer, that would still hurt. It’s a brain thing. So, for some patients with phantom limb pain for years, Ramachandran set up a device with a mirror as you look at your leg, or where your leg would be. Anyway, it can fix the feeling of “phantom limbs” and “phantom limb pain” in days or weeks, when it’s been going on for years.

I believe a lot of psychological problems are like that. We don’t know how to fix them, because we know so little now about the mind and the brain, but there might well be a technique that could fix them, like the technique to help make phantom limb pain better. We should try to help people.

LashRambo on June 2, 2015 at 10:10 PM

And what if people think they’re animals and want to have sex with animals? What if they want to have horns surgically attached to their heads and fake tails put on their tears? Should we also start celebrating that? Gorillas have been taught sign language, so maybe it’s only a matter of time before we are able to communicate even more successfully with animals; then it would be easier to understand their “consent” to sexual activity!

Is there no end to this?

I am a Deaf attorney here in Utah. To be more accurate, I am a Hard of Hearing attorney.

Being Deaf is a challenge but I chose to work hard to overcome my disability to become successful in life. As much as I would love to have 100% hearing, being Deaf has its blessings. It has given me drive to excel and strength to overcome hard times.

As for the story about the Deaf lesbian couple, some Deaf people argue that if a parent is allowed to place hearing aids or cochlear implants to help a Deaf child, then they should be allowed to make a hearing child Deaf. I don’t completely follow that logic and nor do I agree with it. But that seems to be the argument that this couple was making. Moreover, it isn’t JUST that they wanted the child to be Deaf but that they wanted a child to be part of the Deaf community and culture.

It is important to understand that most Deaf people have a strong sense of identity through their Deafness, through American Sign Language and through Deaf culture. Some Deaf people enjoy being Deaf because Deafness is natural to them. They were born with it and they enjoy the language and culture that is found in the Deaf community. There’s nothing wrong with that.

But what the lesbian Deaf couple did is a bit extreme.

I need help and understanding, you see I am transwealthy, in other words I am a billionaire trapped in the body if a middle class white male. I should have a stable of sport and luxury cars instead of just a pickup truck and a Kia. I should have a grand mansion with a huge indoor pool instead of just a 2,800 sq. ft. home and a hot tub, I should have a 200 meter yacht instead of a 17′ jon boat, I should haram models and porn stars instead of my wife of 25 years that went and got herself fat. I want to fly on a private jet instead of always flying coach stuck with a fat guy in the seat next to me and a crying infant in the seat behind me.

The typical madness of the godless. See C.S. Lewis’s “Perelandra Trilogy” and the Belbury insanities in volume 3: “That Hideous Strength” for an illustration.
