Fox and CNN lay out rules for GOP Debate Hunger Games

posted at 10:01 pm on May 20, 2015 by Mary Katharine Ham

Sixteen have volunteered as tribute. Perhaps only 10 will ever make it into the arena. And, ultimately, only one will emerge alive victorious. Here are the rules. Fox will hold the first debate August 6, and will allow the top 10 candidates in the five most recent national polls, opening the possibility for more than 10 participants if there are ties in polling.

It remains to be seen how many candidates will be included in the Fox News debate under the criteria, which could allow more than 10 participants if some are tied in the polls.

The top 10 contenders in the five most recent national polls are former Florida governor Jeb Bush, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, real estate tycoon Donald Trump and former Texas governor Rick Perry, according to a Washington Post analysis.

Reince Priebus has said the party is on board with this method of cutting down the crowd, according to the Post. But let’s say the polling stays as listed above. That leaves a debate stage with Donald Trump on it, but not Gov. Bobby Jindal? Yeesh. Using national polling will also be interesting, as it may not allow for the unexpected surges we see from underdogs in early voting states where they’ve been doing retail work every day. Though I suppose anyone with a chance and a footprint in those states should show up in the top 10. Hmm. It’ll be interesting what kind of scuttlebutt surrounds the polling and Fox’s strategy leading up to the debate if the top 10 is giving you an odd mix a week out. It will also be interesting, as the Washington Post notes, to see if the rules spawn an early round of spending by someone like a Jindal or a Fiorina to break into the field.

CNN will use a different formula for its Sept. 16 debate, which looks like it may allow for more flexibility and a bit more influence from the early states. The debate will feature a literal top tier and lower tier of candidates. The second tier debate runs the risk of being very odd indeed, very entertaining indeed, probably little watched live, and likely viral if it turns out as wacky as it could. I don’t know whether to anticipate it or fear it. But CNN runs less risk of spurning any candidates, which Fox’s format necessarily will.

“The first 10 candidates – ranked from highest to lowest in polling order from an average of all qualifying polls released between July 16 and September 10 who satisfy the criteria requirements … will be invited to participate in ‘Segment B’ of the September 16, 2015 Republican Presidential Primary Debate,” the network states in its candidate criteria. “Candidates who satisfy the criteria and achieve an average of at least 1 percent in three national polls, but are not ranked in the top 10 of polling order will be invited to participate in ‘Segment A’ of the September 16, 2015 Republican Presidential Primary Debate.”

The network also stipulated that “if the number of candidates who qualify for the debate is 14 or fewer, CNN reserves the right to limit the number of participants in ‘Segment B’ to eight candidates. The remaining qualified candidates will be invited to participate in ‘Segment A’ of the debate.”

The Post notes, “The forum, being held at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, Calif., will also required participants to have at least one paid campaign worker in two of the four early voting states.”

Here we go.

This is just stupid. Have a round robin series of debates, get everyone’s point of view, and then start winnowing the field…

Doesn’t matter. Curiously enough the final two standing will be Bush and Christie, and the GOP will tell the base to get out and vote like good little lemmings.

Anyone with seeds will find themselves sidelined early on.

The hucksters clown Trump and no Carly? The last time Republicans ran the only person who couldn’t criticize Obamacare. This time they’ll nominate the only person who can’t criticize Hillary for being dynastic old news.

I wish some who know better would stop referring to these events as “debates.”

These are not “debates.” Words mean things. I don’t know if there’s a name for these gatherings of the candidates, where “moderators” pick topics on which the candidates can say a few words about the subject and try to perhaps contrast and compare their thoughts on the subject from those of some or all of the other candidates. Whether there is a name for this sort of gathering, I do not know. But they are not “debates.”

The smart candidates could announce that they will debate certain of the other candidates and invite those who they want to debate to a venue. The debate could be hosted on the internet and then be made available for viewing later at a web site, be made available as a podcast, etc. I believe the networks would get into a bidding war to host these debates, because they would actually interest the voters.

The debate ground rules would be (the time limits could be modified; just used as examples):

Each candidate gets two minutes to ask the other candidate(s) a question. The candidate(s) get three minutes to answer, the candidate who asked the question gets three minutes to respond. Then the next candidate gets to do the same.

This way each candidate will be determining which of the other candidates are worthy to have time spent actually debating them. The candidates deemed as unworthy of having such time devoted to them simply will be left out. In this way, the candidates themselves will be able to ask the questions that they think are important, and vice versa.

Cain and Gingrich did this. It worked.

Thank you.

If your culling method involves removing any candidate from consideration but leaving in Donald Trump, you’re doing it wrong.

Why not have 2 debates, on successive nights? I mean, at least let all candidates who aren’t Trump have at least one night where they’re presumed to be serious. Right?

This is further complicated by the fact that the two most obvious book tour candidates besides Trump have Survivor Immunity because of identity politics.

First debate, five-seven minutes with each candidate. One on one with a neutral moderator – in other words almost nobody at the MSM networks and only about half of the people at Fox. Less a debate and more a series of interviews where the candidates introduce themselves and answer a couple of short questions. Would take about 2 hours.

Second debate, do the double debate thing. But the big five or six star in the first debate, then the ten or twelve underlings can scrap for time in the later debate. Also CNN should have nothing to do with any debate this cycle outside of the Democrat primary. Their performance in 2012 was unforgivable and I still haven’t seen them seek forgiveness.

Subsequent debates limit it to the strongest 8 players. By then Jindal, Perry and anybody else with promise should be showing in the polls or else tough luck to them. Most importantly continue whittling that field.

Shouldn’t be more than about 6 after the 4th debate or so. After Iowa shouldn’t be more than 4.

How about an “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader” format?
Questions covering the Constitution, history, world geography, and economics.
The top 3 scores move on to the “Jeopardy” round.
Winner gets the nomination.

Although I much prefer the various battle to the death formats for politicians…..

CNN will be moderated by Chris Cuomo, Sally Kohn and Don Lemmon probably

Tapper is legit, I’m perfectly fine with him moderating out of anyone else on a non-Fox channel. If it’s anyone from CNN but Tapper, it’ll be a sh-t show like all the others

And honestly if we’re whining about someone who is 11th in polling not being in the debate, we need to refocus. This race is only about 4-6 candidates already, let’s be honest

Everyone else is just running to promote their careers or cash in somehow with a Fox gig or book deal

Predictions – dumb liberals on twitter and elsewhere will go “duhhh, we’re going to need to get a bigger clown car huh huh”, mistakenly believing that they are somehow witty.

Perry will make a fool of himself.

Cruz will dominate.

Lindsey Graham will be forced upon a populace which doesn’t want to watch him.

Jeb will stink, as always, he will read what he thinks are applause lines and crickets will be the result.

Rubio will do something stupid.

We will hear twenty million times “uhh I’m a Ronald Reagan conservative”.

All the questions will be about ISIS.

The nation will suffer from hearing Chris Wallace’s smarmy voice and annoying delivery on the FNC debates.

Actally on CNN every question will probably be…

“Mr. So and So, polls say that Americans are increasingly pro gay marriage bla bla bla”

And every candidate will answer “uhh I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman but uhh states have the right to choose”

The debates will be terrible and the viewers will learn nothing that they didn’t already know.

If you are interested in comparing all the candidates, hit up C-SPAN. They’ve got the stump speeches archived from the:

New Hampshire Leadership Summit
http://www.c-span.org/search/?searchtype=All&query=republican+leadership+summit

South Carolina Freedom Forum:
http://www.c-span.org/search/?searchtype=All&query=south+carolina+freedom+forum

Iowa Lincoln Day:
http://www.c-span.org/video/?326033-1/iowa-gop-lincoln-dinner

I’ve watched at least two stump speeches from every candidate I can’t stand. It’s a good way to give ’em all at least a little bit of a chance and start culling the field.

for example, I have found Jindal and Fiorina to be surprisingly good speakers. I have found Walker and Bush to be surprisingly dull.

If you keep checking with C-SPAN, you’ll have no shortage of opportunites to see all the candidates. For example, they are posting the long interviews with each candidate from WMUR TV in New Hampshire. I’m sure everyone will have a shot at this before long:

Why are media outlets “laying down the rules”? Since 1980, the media picked the GOP nominee every time except for Reagan. Any pretense of media objectivity is long since gone. The fig leaf blew away.

Why, in an age of streaming content and professional alternative media, continue to run/hold debates the way they were done in 1960?

Do they want to intentionally lose the election?

Give them nothing. Ignore them. Quit enabling this fiction there is any media objectivity or impartiality. According to Gallup, only 18% of Americans trust the media and their audience is tiny. Deny them the one thing they crave: credibility.

Reagan talked over the media, around the media, and bypassed them with great success.

flipflop on May 21, 2015 at 6:48 AM

Trump, Fiorina, and Carson are clown candidates, in that none of them have any intention of becoming the nominee and they are in this for the publicity. They should be automatically excluded.

As for the rest, divide into groups of 4/5 and hold several debates over the course of a week every two months until January. This would translate to 3/4 per week, which is certainly manageable.

Nothing would make us look more ridiculous than a dais with fifteen people.

Ted the Average on May 21, 2015 at 7:17 AM

I’ll pay attention to stuff like the Value Voters Summit.

And to anything that the Candidates, themselves, decide to do to interact with each other to present themselves to the public.

I would like some topical meetings where they would all have to show their ability to think on a topic, present their viewpoints, have some back and forth, some give and take, but kept to that topic, such as foreign policy problems (ex. Iran, Iraq, transnational terrorism, etc.) or economic problems or the problems of government in the modern day.

They can all self-winnow at that point, and yet also know that they have to demonstrate decorum, ability to listen, ability to think on their feet, and to show that they have some modicum of ability to act like an executive and think like one.

The MFM ‘debates’? Yeah, you get exposure. So does a prostitute in a red light district. What is the point of these things beyond trying to destroy candidates the MFM doesn’t like?

ajacksonian on May 21, 2015 at 8:02 AM
