Rubio 2013: I can’t imagine a Republican president undoing an Obama executive order on amnesty

posted at 11:31 am on April 14, 2015 by Allahpundit

Is this anecdote from Byron York new or did I miss it when he first published it? Either way, can’t wait until Rubio gets asked whether he still believes this at his first presidential campaign townhall.

Oh, by the way: What he says here is 100 percent correct.

“Here’s my big worry,” Rubio told me during an interview while the bill was making its way through the Senate. “I fear that if this thing fails, the president will basically say to anyone in the U.S. who has been here more than three years, who has not committed a serious crime…he’ll say, ‘We’ll do for you what we did for the DREAM kids.’ And the problem with that will be you will have 10 million people legalized in the United States by executive order, so that when there is a new president, if it is a conservative, a Republican, one of the first decisions they will have to make is whether to yank that status from those people and deport them. I cannot imagine a scenario where a future president is going to take away the status they’re going to get. I believe it’s what [Obama] will do. Maybe not all 10 million, but he’ll do it for six million.”

Could any prediction have been more spot-on? The Gang of Eight bill did indeed fail, and all the rest came to pass, pretty much exactly as Rubio said.

Precisely right. I’ve made the same point repeatedly since O issued his order last fall. No Republican president is going to introduce himself and his party to Latino constituents on day one by summarily torpedoing O’s amnesty order. And Obama knows that. He wouldn’t have gambled on something as dubious and momentous as a massive power grab on immigration if he thought a conservative successor would feel comfortable tossing it out in two years. It will bind the next president, not by force of law but by force of politics. Rubio’s smart enough to have realized that more than a year before O’s order was even issued. What’s remarkable about what he said to York isn’t the insight but the fact that an aspiring Republican presidential candidate would be willing to say it out loud. Which makes me wonder: How are he and the rest of the field going to shake out when asked about rescinding O’s amnesty? Rand Paul’s already introduced a bill in the Senate to repeal Obama’s order, which presumably means President Paul would cancel it. Ted Cruz has said he’ll undo all of Obama’s unconstitutional executive orders if elected, so he’s in on the repeal game too. But then, this call is easy for Paul and Cruz given that their chances depend on consolidating the conservative vote. Candidates who are more towards the middle, like Bush, Walker, and especially Rubio, who’s under pressure to show he’ll hold special appeal to Latino voters in the general election, have to worry more about “electability.” What do they say when asked if they’ll cancel O’s order? Will Rubio promise to do so, having already admitted to York that it’s politically impossible?

While you mull that question, here’s another one: Given the baggage he still carries over amnesty on the right, what is this guy doing boasting on launch day that he’s done more for immigration reform than Hillary Clinton ever has?

“Well, I don’t know about the [other Republican presidential candidates], but I’ve done more on immigration than Hillary Clinton ever did. I mean I helped pass an immigration bill out of a Senate dominated by Democrats,” Rubio said. “She’s given speeches on it, but she’s never done anything on it.”…

Rubio went on to say that the GOP’s problem with minority voters is that it has been portrayed as a party that doesn’t care about people trying to make it in America. “I don’t think people go to the ballot box and say I’m a Latino therefore I’m voting Democrat,” he said. “I think they bring with them their hopes and dreams about the future and they vote for whoever they think best understands it.”

I know, I know — arguably there’s no point in him downplaying his immigration record since he’s going to get clubbed with it anyway. But … why not at least wait until after the primaries to start talking up his big bipartisan amnesty initiative? He’ll have months to do that during the general election campaign, with the full blessing of conservatives in the name of beating Hillary, after he’s won the nomination. Trumpeting his lame achievement with the Gang of Eight right now means reminding primary voters that on this issue, in terms of who’s done more to move the ball on legalizing illegals, he’s to the left of Hillary Clinton. I guess he’s given up on tea-party votes as completely as Jeb has, huh?

Exit question: Remember the time Rubio replied to liberal threats of executive amnesty by urging righties to suck it up and give the left what it wants? Now that’s leadership.

Apparently he lies more pitch perfectly, in Spanish

Rubio was never suckered by anyone. From the very start of his political career he preached amnesty to Spanish speaking audiences like La Raza, and securing the border to English speaking audiences. The speeches were available to watch online. Many articles discussing this were posted here [Free Republic] and I participated in a lot of those threads. So from day one it was indisputably clear that slimeball Rubio was a liar. The only question was…which audience was he lying to? That is pretty clear now.

When Rubio was in the Florida legislature he was already promoting the goals of illegals and preventing bills that would have done something about them. He wasn’t suckered by Schumer and Obama. His real view of illegals is the same as theirs. He’s just lying about it after the American people rose up in anger over the amnesty he was pushing. Vote for Rubio and you’ll get amnesty and open borders.

What he says here is 100 percent correct.

No he isn’t; I can easily imagine a conservative President yanking the executive amnesty.

In fact, I can imagine a conservative presidential candidate saying openly and early that he will use government lists of those who receive the amnesty and related benefits as a *starting point* for where to begin the deportations.

It will bind the next president, not by force of law but by force of politics.

With our growing debt, the growth of wages and jobs stagnating, more and more people on the dole as good jobs are harder to find, the culture wars heating up, perhaps the political landscape will change in the next 2 years.

The issue I have with Rubio’s views on immigration is that he is motivated by his racial heritage. I don’t view my life or my accomplishments through the lens of racial politics, and I don’t want a “Representative” to do so either.

What do you mean by “border hawks”? According to the polls I’ve seen (sample, sorry that its a little old) depending on how the question is asked 50-70% of R voters want to see the “border being secured” as the approach toward “immigration reform.”

And those numbers aren’t much different among independents. They’re flipped for Democrats.

So I mean… depends on what you mean by “border hawks”, but I’d say it’s safe to say that at least (being generous) 30-40% of the R primary voters will vehemently disagree with Rubios approach. Which is a large number of people to just write off.

Plus his problem with the 41% of Republicans who self identify as TEA party (I’m sure there’s some cross over with “border hawks” and TEA Party) and… yeah, where does that get him? Who is his base?

Adding insult to vacuousness was the demographic box-checking nature of the video, however beautifully filmed. Working mom, check. Hispanic entrepreneur, check. Retiring grandma, check. Gay couple, check. African-American family, check. Hardworking small-businessman, check. South Asian, inter-racial, lesbian, check, check, check. If your demographic was not featured, you should write the campaign and it will probably splice you in.

GIven Obama’s power grabs any future GOP president needs to go big or go home.
Cancel every single one of Obama’s executive orders. Roll back all his regulatory overreach the same way. Make the Left run to court and try to find standing to stop him.
In reality all you would be doing is going back to the status quo prior to O’s illegal actions.

Once you’ve done that, secure the border, for real. Then and only then talk to Congress about reforming immigration.
And say up front that’s what you are doing.

He’s talking about an action that would be politically nearly impossible. If Obama signed an executive order to give all poor children a $5 allowance every week, what Republican president is going to just immediately rescind it because it’s done the wrong way? That would be all the Republican president would be known for from then on–the president who made poor children cry. Politicians stay out of political minefields if they can.

Mapped: The world’s immigration landscape

The United States has more recent foreign immigrants than any other nation in the world at about 46,000,000. These are immigrants who came to this nation legally, either through the legitimate federal immigration system or as refugees and asylum seekers.

The number of foreign born living in the United States has more than quadrupled since 1970.

As you can see by the interactive map and the graphs in the article the United States remains exceptional, at least as the primary preferred destination for immigrants worldwide.

In the unlikely event Rubio won, and in the unlikely event he did something conservative, it would be undone by the non-white and anti-white majority he is determined to import regardless of law.

There is no principle he could stand for that a winning electoral group that referred to “our ancestors, the illegals” would respect. Those who have flooded America and outnumbered its population by disregarding its laws are not going to become the protectors of its traditions, not in sufficient numbers.

Finally, Rubio is a backstabber, and that must always be remembered.

Nope…….look up any Hillary or Obama speech where they talk about immigration.

terryannonline on April 14, 2015 at 11:59 AM

Are you seriously suggesting that they actually mean it?

Augustinian on April 14, 2015 at 12:03 PM

It’s all about race for people that demand mass immigration and forced assimilation in white countries and only in white countries.

Somehow America always needs more “diversity” but Nigeria, Indonesia etc. don’t.

David Blue on April 14, 2015 at 12:00 PM

Yeah…..that’s why illegals from Latin America are coming to America….to piss off white folk. It’s not for opportunity for their their families.

Yep, and I also totes believed Obama in ’08 when he was anti-gay marriage. You know, before he underwent an evolution.

Timin203 on April 14, 2015 at 12:03 PM

If the public were for amnesty then obama and any congress would have long since passed it, dummy.

20 something Latina Open Borders La Raza/Mecha going to reconquer Aztlan from America traitor living in South Texas.

oscarwilde on April 14, 2015 at 12:04 PM

Rubio 2013: I can’t imagine a Republican president undoing an Obama executive order on amnesty

Nice knowing ya.

According to the polls I’ve seen (sample, sorry that its a little old) depending on how the question is asked 50-70% of R voters want to see the “border being secured” as the approach toward “immigration reform.”

Um everyone wants to see the border secured……..even Hillary and Obama say they want the border secured. That’s not the issue.

terryannonline on April 14, 2015 at 11:45 AM

A pretty little dance. They pretend to be concerned about border security, and you pretend to believe them.

terryannonline on April 14, 2015 at 12:03 PM

I don’t want to get in to the racial stuff, since I don’t think that’s really an issue, BUT you need to separate the motivations of the illegals coming here (which we all understand, and relate to.) from the motivations of the politicians who set up an incentive system to import millions of new Dem voters illegally.

I don’t think anyone is trying to attack a guy who comes here from El Salvador by sneaking across a few international borders to make some money to send back to his family. But we are trying to attack a government that would set up an incentive system to make that a viable option for the guy from El Salvador.

terryannonline on April 14, 2015 at 12:03 PM

Yeah, and that’s why whites, blacks, and even Hispanic Americans and people of numerous backgrounds who are here legally, oppose this illegal invasion – because Mexicans are icky – right?

It couldn’t possibly be because legal citizens see their job opportunities being diminished by cheap labor and their hard-earned tax dollars used as fuel for the fire. Right?

Politicians are creeps……they are not going to have a pure motivations to ANYTHING. I do care about the policy though. We need to secure the border and do something about the illegals already here….and no we can’t deport them all. Everything for the border hawks is AMNESTY. So ignore them…..you can’t negotiate with them.

terryannonline on April 14, 2015 at 12:11 PM

1. It is not cheap labor, it is SLAVE LABOR.

2. Most of it is run by criminals.

3. Without borders the U.S.A. is not a free country controlled by the legal voter citizens.

4. No. 3 is the goal of the two party evil money cult.

APACHEWHOKNOWS on April 14, 2015 at 12:11 PM

terryannonline on April 14, 2015 at 12:03 PM

From your poll

48% of voters overall said they strongly agree that “Congress should pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill that strengthens border security, and provides a pathway to citizenship for undocumented workers if they undergo a background check, pay taxes, and learn English.

So, first off, lets note that 52% of adults do not favor this proposal.

Second off, lets note that there has never been a proposal on the table to strengthen border security, or make anyone pay taxes, learn english, and pass a background check.

BUT if the border was actually secured, I think most of us would be willing to have a conversation about the rest of this two part question. But no one is talking about actually securing the border, because that’s in nobody in DC’s best interest.

I’m trying to think how I would answer this question if asked it in this way, and I’d probably say, “yes I’d support a hypothetical that first secured the border, then worked double time to deport all of the low hanging fruit — petty criminals, destitute, people having run ins with law enforcement –, then I’d be willing to consider a financial fine, background check, etc. for whoever remains after our blitz-deportation.”

But like I said, no one is talking about the proposal laid out in this push-poll question.

Timin203 on April 14, 2015 at 12:11 PM

terryannonline,

Many self deport often to take stuff back to Mexico , cars, trucks, money, other stuff.

There are thousands of buses every week end that make the trips back and fourth.

They go back for weddings, they go for funerals, they go themselves and often.

false flag you run up the pole

terryannonline on April 14, 2015 at 12:11 PM

But (and I don’t claim to speak for border hawks) I think you’ll find most people are much more open to conversation about this topic if and when the border is actually secured, and ICE and Border Patrol are actively aggressively enforcing existing laws.

The problem is that we’ve had this Lucy and the football situation play out I don’t know how many times over the last 30-40 years, where we are promised X (border security, spending cuts, etc, etc) as long as we pass Y (amnesty, tax increases, etc etc), yet Y always seems to get passed, and X is ignored.

So many out there are rightfully frustrated with this whole scenario playing out once again, and they’re (understandably) saying “I don’t even want to hear about legalization or anything else for the 40 or whatever million people here until I’m satisfied that the border is secure and that our government is making a big effort to keep out / kick out illegals. Once that is done… well, come talk to me in 5 years.”

Which I think is a very sensible position to have. Because the other side of it is that constantly talking about amnesty and these hypothetical situations acts as a huge magnet to people south of our border and increases illegal immigration.

Enemy armies always make that exact same claim just before they insist that you surrender to them, which is likewise exactly what you are demanding. We do not have to deport them all, just like we do not have to kill every single enemy solider.

Eisenhower proved back in the 1950’s that it was not necessary to deport every illegal alien, it was only necessary to make a very public sweep and deport everyone caught in that sweep, and then make it 100 percent clear that we will enforce our immigration laws.

Timin203 on April 14, 2015 at 12:05 PM

I think most Mexican illegals, would be perfectly fine if they were just granted a work visa, and no path to citizenship. I think a good and modest proposal is to secure the border and grant a certain amount of work visas in lieu of amnesty.

Liberals only care about amnesty because they figure it can benefit them.
