Video: The obligatory “Obama reminds the GOP he won” clip

posted at 11:21 am on January 21, 2015 by Allahpundit

Noah’s right that this backhand from the SOTU will fade long before O’s lies about the state of counterterrorism do, but as the trolliest line from an exceptionally trollish speech by a master of the form, it deserves its own thread. I don’t think the media’s high-fiving over it primarily as a distraction; if NBC, of all networks, is calling out O on his foreign policy propaganda, it’s hard to argue that the press is covering for him. Democrats aren’t even covering for him:

The reason the media’s zeroed in on the “I won twice” zinger is, yes, because they enjoy watching the star quarterback from their hometown team spike the ball but mainly because it’s a rare colorful moment from the relentlessly dismal, programmatic State of the Union slog. The fact that O fired this ad lib off literally seconds after calling for more comity in politics feels like a goof on the scripted insincerity of the event. He and his team probably spent weeks reworking that passage about comity to get it just right and all it took for Obama to blow it up was some abortive hooting from the Republican gallery that wounded his pride. I hope lefties turn this into a Vine that gets 10 million views; the more popular it is, the more likely it is that the SOTU will gradually transform into a zingerfest by O’s successors, which would at least make the speech entertaining, or that it’ll be dropped entirely. Either outcome is better than what we have now.

Good point from Charles Cooke about this:

He squandered Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress and watched the GOP annihilate his party at the state level last year, but he won twice so let’s high five. That’s why they call him The One, I guess — he’s the only one with any real power left. If you’re a liberal watching last night’s speech and weighing the losing streak you’ve been on, why not relish a little callback to the glory days of 2012?

Oh, he also neglected to acknowledge Mitch McConnell last night as the new Senate majority leader. Trolls gotta troll.

That was Obama’s face when he heard that applause. He stepped all over his own message because he could not let that go. He was psychologically compelled to take that shot.

It’s a sad thing, really, to be so unprofessional as that, and expose the insincerity of your speech so blatantly.

The Schaef on January 21, 2015 at 12:33 PM

I wouldn’t have applauded if I were a Republican sitting in that chamber, but still — to be able to provoke a sitting President of the United States with simple cheers (Obama gave them the opening while talking about ‘civility’) shows how America has an immature, thin skinned person residing in the White House.

Is there some law that prevents Democrats from voting in midterms?

Resist We Much on January 21, 2015 at 11:52 AM

No, but there’s a sizeable number of adolescent voters (they may be over 18, but they vote like adolescents, like Pajama Boy and Sandra Fluke) who can be fooled by one pea-brained “cool” man with a ton of fake charisma heaped on him by the media, and they believe one “awesomely cool” President can change the country singlehandedly, and Congress doesn’t matter.

A smaller number of more mature voters show up in midterms to elect a Congress to stop the madness.

The problem is, when we have a President with a limitless ego and the attitude of a dictator who ignores Congress, are the adolescents correct in believing he can singlehandedly change the country with the support of a large number of ignorami, if no one can stop him?

America is sick and tired of the rhinos running the dang show.

Are you talking about the Dems winning the popular vote in the past five out of six nationwide elections? Because it’s the Republicans who only seem to be able to hobble together a W when two-thirds of the country doesn’t actually vote. Nothing to hang their hat on at all.

weedisgood on January 21, 2015 at 4:15 PM

I didn’t watch the speech last night. I’m discovering that the closer 2016 gets the angrier I get at this situation. I remember in the late 70s how frightened we were that Jimmy Carter was in charge of things while watching Iran chant “Death to America!” on the news. We were helpless then and we’re in the same exact position now. At least back then the news media actually agreed with the public and we had Ronald Reagan to look forward to. It’s hard sometimes to tell the difference between the GOP and the DNC. Neither does what we want unless they are forced to do it. At least the GOP pays attention somewhat. The DNC just flips us off and does whatever the hell they want to do regardless.

weedisgood on January 21, 2015 at 4:15 PM

You mean Obama’s just too good at lying to whatever group he’s speaking to. Even a man with no charisma like Mitt Romney ran circles around Obama in their first debate — because Obama is a deer in the headlights when he’s off the teleprompter and unscripted and his record was abysmal in 2012. Candy Crowley then had to play defense for Obama during the second debate after receiving her marching orders from Valerie Jarrett.

That’s how bad it was getting for Team Obama — against Mitt Romney. The Republicans would have easily crushed Obama had they run someone who was semi-telegenic and charismatic — regardless of whether that someone was conservative, hard-right, or a RINO. Someone like a Newt Gingrich, a Bobby Jindal, or a John Thune would have repeated Romney’s first debate performance in all three debates.

Hillary Clinton is no doubt the most overrated politician in America — she’s terrible on the stump — but Obama isn’t too far behind. He wins with bald-faced lies, style over substance and with the media cheering for him. Obama turns out his base of black, Latino and young voters very well, but when the GOP loses more of the Latino vote in 2012 compared to 2008, anyone with a brain knows it’s because the GOP picked the wrong candidate.

and watched the video of Priebus. When he was asked why the difference in the two Republican responses with only the Spanish one mentioning immigration, Priebus evaded answering the question by flipping his answer to the Democrats–Dem Congressional members would send out different PR’s so he’s not surprised at the two different responses. Then he went into Obama.

Priebus made no mention of the fact that Republican leadership OK’d the speech. I bet they don’t do that to press releases of individual members.

More Obysmal deceit: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/pj-gladnick/2015/01/21/star-tribune-fails-reveal-local-woman-featured-sotu-was-democrat

The woman was a political operative for Patty Murray.

Damn, this black man does not know his place.

Ned Pepper on January 21, 2015 at 1:42 PM

What about his white half, Nerd? Maybe it’s smarter.

Solaratov on January 21, 2015 at 5:48 PM

Obama’s come back was run of the mill.

Far and away the best moment in SOTU history and one that will be remembered is Joe Wilson shouting out “You lie.”

It has legs because it has been proven true so many times.

It appears that the cheering began in the First Lady’s box (if you will pardon the expression.

There is a reason RCP uses the RV poll over the A poll when both are available. Unfortunately it doesn’t fit the message that Ned is attempting to promote.

airupthere on January 21, 2015 at 3:23 PM

What? So ned is dishonest and a serial plagiarizer!!!

Color me shocked!!

HumpBot Salvation on January 21, 2015 at 3:44 PM

Poor Ned cut and pasted something yesterday that we immediately demolished brick-by-brick, namely the false claim that his inflatable doll O’bama is the first US President to have lived outside of the US before becoming President.

At last count, we had ticked off at least 8 other prior Presidents who had in fact done that before O’bama did.

Del Dolemonte on January 21, 2015 at 6:21 PM

I like to remain positive and point out at this point he’s actually already lost his real last campaign. You know since there’s always the rumor he actually wanted to be secretary general of the UN. (No chance of that now, not only doesn’t he speak French but not showing up in solidarity a couple weeks back? Barry really blew it, he just lost any shot at his dream job.)

CW on January 21, 2015 at 7:22 PM

Te federal government is spending more as a percent of our GDP than we have in 15 years…doesn’t he get enough already?

CW on January 21, 2015 at 7:25 PM

Obama is such a stronz

St Gaudens on January 21, 2015 at 7:26 PM

I’m not convinced he actually won in 2012, but Romney didn’t have the balls to truly investigate it.

SouthernGent on January 21, 2015 at 7:36 PM

What a arrogant jerk he is. This should be above the president of the United states but this guy does what he wants when he wants. I pretty much despise him.

All they have left are these small short term ‘gotcha!’ moments because their guy is a disaster and America is suffering greatly because of him. So they’ll eat their words eventually — especially as Obama becomes the 2008 Bush of 2016.

If conservatives can take Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania (Minnesota looks promising too) the democrats haven’t a prayer for at least a generation.

1redshirtxlg on January 21, 2015 at 5:29 PM

If Conservatives take what? Those states in the 2016 Pres election? No chance.

warriorgreg on January 21, 2015 at 10:29 PM

Obama reminds me of the old 70s sitcom Welcome Back Kotter. The petulent students were always trying to out trash each other with such classic zingers as ” up your nose with a rubber hose” and ” your mama is so fat jokes”. He’s a petulent little boy.

neyney on January 21, 2015 at 11:38 PM

“A better politics is one where we debate without demonizing each other; where we talk issues, and values, and principles, and facts, rather than ‘gotcha’ moments, or trivial gaffes, or fake controversies that have nothing to do with people’s daily lives.”

The oaf said this, just ahead of playing the Child on TV.

GWB congratulated Nanzi Pelosi when she won the majority. It was in his opening statement. obama will never grow up and he’ll always be a sick man.

Barack Obama is a smug, petty little man.

RebeccaH on January 22, 2015 at 10:42 AM

“Well your Mom is fat! So there!”

What he said sounded just as childish. And the people cheering him on, also seem extremely childish.

TheCape on January 22, 2015 at 10:43 AM

It is simple ………………. Obama is a classic narcissistic jackass/Democrat. Of course there are many of the same sort in the Republican Party.

SC.Charlie on January 22, 2015 at 11:30 PM

It’s the first clip I watched and I couldn’t make it through – Obama is truly a loathsome figure.
