The youngest women elected to office are Republicans

posted at 8:41 am on November 5, 2014 by Jazz Shaw

Memo to all of you “Republican War on Women” talkers: Take a hike.

Two races of particular interest yesterday speak to an issue which goes far beyond the borders of their respective districts. One was a House race which I’ve written about here before. In New York’s north country, Elise Stefanik has won her battle against millionaire filmmaker Aaron Woolf and is now the youngest woman ever elected to the United States Congress.

Republican Elise Stefanik has become the youngest woman elected to Congress in history, winning her race against Aaron Woolf in New York’s 21st open district 56-32, ABC News projects.

She’s the first Republican to win the district, which had been held by Democratic Rep. Bill Owens since 1993.

Stefanik, 30, is seen as a new face and image for the GOP. House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy both campaigned for her on the trail, offering a preview of the attention she’s sure to receive at the Capitol as she projects an aura of energy and vitality for a party hoping to appeal to younger demographics.

The formerly youngest elected Congresswoman was a fellow New Yorker: Democrat Elizabeth Holtzman was 31 when elected to Congress in 1973.

That was a great win for the GOP, but there’s one other race worth mentioning. Do any of you recognize this woman?
SairaBlair

She is Saira Blair. She’s a Republican. She was endorsed by the NRA. She was just elected as a state legislator in West Virginia. And she’s an 18 year old college freshman who ran her campaign out of her dorm room.

Republican Saira Blair, a fiscally conservative 18-year-old, will represent a small district in West Virginia’s eastern panhandle, about 1½ hours outside Washington, D.C., after defeating her Democratic opponent 63% to 30%, according to the Associated Press. A third candidate got 7% of the vote.

In a statement, Ms. Blair thanked her supporters and family, as well as her opponents for running a positive campaign. “History has been made tonight in West Virginia, and while I am proud of all that we have accomplished together, it is the future of this state that is now my singular focus,” she said.

Is this the new face of the GOP? Smart, driven young people who are not just showing up to vote, but to roll up their sleeves and run for office. And if you want to insist that the Republicans are the party that hates women, these young ladies would probably beg to differ. Something tells me that the Democrats are going to have to retool their message for 2016, because that dog’s not hunting.

Elise Stefanik earned the highest NRA rating possible for a first time candidate. Elise has earned an AQ rating from the NRA. This rating is the highest rating a first time candidate for Congress can receive.

Blair is a freshman at West Virginia University. She’s very conservative, according to her very comprehensive issues page: she was endorsed by the NRA.

Dwell for one moment on the fact that Elise is also from New York.

Then remember the last Republican President to win New York was Ronald Reagan.

Then look at the destructive, empty freedom crushing policies of Cuomo and what a buffoonish, underwhelming character Mr. “you don’t need 30 bullets to kill a deer” is.

Lastly, think about what principled people who pursue polices that will benefit the American people, not some party, such as Elise can do.

We need to keep moving forward and crush those who are stealing our country.

Jazz, the dems don’t change their argument, the just yell it louder.

TQM38a on November 5, 2014 at 9:17 AM

The trouble is, that the democrats (ie, progressive socialists) firmly believe in the notion that: “If you tell a lie, make it BIG and they will believe it.”.

It doesn’t matter that it isn’t honest or moral or true in the least. It only matters that they trick people into voting for them and amass more power as a result. Even when you provide indisputable evidence to counteract their lie, all they do is stick their fingers in their ears and keep screaming the same lie, adhering to their other go to tactic: “If you repeat a lie enough, it will become true.”.

That is exactly how a very large number of people in this country (and indeed, in the world), have come to believe that the democrat party is not completely shot through with the violent racism that their history is replete with. Generations of telling the same lie (that it is the republicans that are the violent racists) has essentially made that lie truth for a large segment of the population.

She’s the first Republican to win the district, which had been held by “Democratic Rep. Bill Owens since 1993.”

This is really annoying. The District number remained the same; how can 21st District be called anything but the 21st District? But the 21st District of the last decade covered geography which is almost all excluded from the 21st District as now drawn. The 21st today is now mostly what was the 24th District just prior to redistricting for the 2010 census.

To be even clearer, Bill Owens has not held the 21st since 1993, since he’s only been a Congressman since 2009. He held the 23rd seat of the (Dede Scozzafava — Doug Hoffman infamy) until until redistricting of the 2012 election. Dems McNulty (’93-’09), Tonko (09′-13) held that numbered seat since 1993, but again Owens had not held that geography both because of the not running and because he was in the 23rd and the 21st was somewhere else.

Here in FL, Amendment 2 (medical marijuana) was put on the ballot in order to drive young voters to the polls, where they would presumably vote Democrat and sweep the Oompah Loompah into the governor’s office. Instead, Scott was re-elected: a conservative, pro-business, low tax advocate routinely and viciously scourged by the local press. Yes, the youth vote showed up, but they no longer vote in liberal lock-step. These candidates and those young voters are the end of the ‘permanent Democrat majority’ meme.

You guys act the same way about West and Carson, ignoring their faults, and choosing to go gaga over someone because they haven’t committed the apparent crime of having white skin.

Mia Love is a boring speaker who sides against conservatives and refuses to call herself part of the Tea Party. She opposed Mike Lee’s “defund Obamacare” effort and she prefers to support Boehner and Ryan over conservatives:
http://hotair.com/archives/2013/12/18/mia-love-i-probably-would-have-voted-for-that-lame-boehnerryan-budget-deal/

She’s a bad candidate who has performed much worse than she should have.

If this woman were white, none of us would have heard of her and she wouldn’t be getting all this coverage.

The racist focus on skin color, and the celebration of people specifically because they aren’t that “horrible” white color, is something I would expect to find in the comment section of a lefty site, so it is sad to see conservative commenters engage in it.

Come on, HA! Doesn’t Mia Love get a mention????

She beat an old white guy!

Does that make you happy?

Readers here sound worse than Democrats sometimes. Many of you are getting so giddy about Mia Love simply because she’s black and a woman. It’s pathetic. You guys act the same way about West and Carson, ignoring their faults, and choosing to go gaga over someone because they haven’t committed the apparent crime of having white skin.

JugEarsButtHurt = reportedly banned commenter KoolAid2

I didn’t know that banned commenters, especially ones with records of habitual obscenity, including calls for sexual assault to be committed against certain conservative women, as KoolAid2 has, were able to quickly return with new names.

bluegill – it is just sweet because it shows as a direct counterpoint to the dem message. They will stay elected or not based upon what they do in office. I think Love also has underperformed and I fear she will be a disappointment, but let’s see how it goes and then we can judge. For now we can celebrate the complete fracturing of the dem argument of the old white guy GOP with examples of a different variety. It is merely to enjoy the pain it must give to our diversity sensitive adversaries.

I’m concerned you couldn’t tell the difference – much like Joanna and her TP rants that demonstrate she knows nothing about the tea party.

Zomcon JEM on November 5, 2014 at 4:15 PM

But she’s a woman, so let’s all put our judgement aside and act like Democrats celebrating the fact that she isn’t an “old white guy.” (“ew, icky, old white guys, yucky.”)

bluegill on November 5, 2014 at 12:40 PM

Just last night, I was telling my teenaged daughter not to fall into the GOP is a bunch of old white guys trap, and that besides, Old White Guys pretty much built Western Civilization, so even if it was just a bunch of old white guys, so what? Doesn’t make it wrong or bad.

That said, I am thrilled with the young Saira, not because she beat some old white guy, but because she’s a young woman who isn’t a total immoral sleazy leftist, when the majority of young single women obviously vote based on nothing but the freedom of SEX. It gives me hope for my children’s generation. Not a lot of hope, but some, and if she can be a role model and maybe get some of the others to wake up or speak up because now they know they aren’t the only ones, then fantastic! I intend to celebrate that.

So what does this say about the imaginary War on Women™?

Star Bird on November 5, 2014 at 5:13 PM

I am so proud of ALL these conservative women.

Now go to DC and kick some butt…

mmcnamer1 on November 5, 2014 at 8:21 PM

She is Saira Blair. She’s a Republican. She was endorsed by the NRA. She was just elected as a state legislator in West Virginia. And she’s an 18 year old college freshman who ran her campaign out of her dorm room.

Nice win, but will she have to miss class to vote in the WV State Legislature, or miss committee hearings to go to class?

She’ll still have to wait another 8 years to run for the House of Representatives.
