Wendy Davis: Would Greg Abbott, who, by the way, is in an interracial marriage, defend a ban on interracial marriage?

posted at 2:41 pm on October 20, 2014 by Allahpundit

Via Gabe Malor, not only would (i.e. will) Abbott’s wife be the first Latina first lady of Texas, Abbott himself likes to stress that fact when he introduces her at rallies. Dave Weigel tweets that Mrs. Abbott is featured on campaign billboards with her husband across the state. Her mother’s picture has also made it onto Abbott 2014 billboards to assure fellow Latinos that “Texas will love having him as governor.”

It’s no secret, in other words, that he and his wife are of different races. On the contrary, it’s a message broadcast repeatedly by the Abbott campaign itself to appeal to the state’s growing Latino population. Team Wendy is surely aware of that.

And yet:

Would Greg Abbott defend a law that’s clearly unconstitutional, and which, if somehow successful, would render his own marriage of 32 years null and void? These are the important questions raised by Wendy Davis’s vital, empowering candidacy. At the rate we’re going, I feel like it’s inevitable within the next two weeks that she’ll accuse Abbott outright of faking his disability. Which, come to think of it, has already sort of happened.

Ace’s co-blogger Jeff B. thinks he knows what the angle is here, though:

That point is often made half-jokingly by righties to needle Davis over her dumb, quixotic quest to win election in one of America’s most conservative states as an abortion crusader, but it would help explain some of her bizarre moves lately. As Guy Benson says, she accused Abbott 10 days ago of being a disabled man who doesn’t care about the disabled; now she’s accusing him of being a man in an interracial marriage who somehow opposes interracial marriage. None of that makes sense as a serious tactic to win a statewide election in Texas but it does make some sense as a way to get the attention of the sort of angry liberal given to watching MSNBC. Both of those attacks on Abbott depict him as a callous hypocrite who disdains people from more marginalized parts of the population, the very core of the lefty caricature of Republicans. It won’t help her become governor, but then that battle was lost months ago. Might as well shiv Abbott a few times during her last few weeks in the spotlight to maximize her value to hardcore liberal partisans going forward.

Exit question: Is this election really over? Wendy could be one 37-hour abortion filibuster away from being right back in this thing.

This always amazes me. I myself, am in “multicultural” union with Mrs. Hawkdiver, NHRN. But I am still routinely accused of being “probably” the kind of person would have been against so-called “interracial” marriages during the Civil Rights Movement. One, do you really surmise someone could be in just such a relationship and still feel compelled to look at other similar unions in some different light? Two, do you realize how patently unfair it is to use such an unfair and blatantly incorrect analysis to be judgmental for politics?

For the record, Mrs Hawkdriver has never considered her a hyphenated American. And I say so-called interracial because I’m still under the assumption we’re a Human Race.

hawkdriver on October 20, 2014 at 5:34 PM

You’ve misconstrued what I said.
I’m not at all saying here he would have ever been against interracial marriages. I’m suggesting as AG he is taking an official position of opposing SSM…but that he likely is personally more supportive and accepting of many of the arguments for SSM.

I agree with you that it’s the human race we’re all part of. But of course there was a time when that sentiment – and those rights – did not extend to people of different races marrying.
Just seems so silly in hindsight, doesn’t it?

The Democrats have declared war on rational thought.

I don’t see that Davis mentioned his marriage when she joined with many others in questioning why Abbot had such a hard time with that question.
Bottom line is that question put him on the spot and he didn’t give a convincing answer. And of course, nothing to with his marriage, he knows he would never defend an interracial marriage ban.
So why couldn’t he just say that?

You seem to be in a different universe than the one which produced the Davis “mytexasvotes.com” photo tweet clipped above. And there’s that troubling “”poll tax”” (double double quotes intentional). I wonder whether wendy would support just having people walk up and vote without signing in. After all, forcing someone to do anything to prove their identity is certainly a “poll tax”, is it not?

If he had said that, then you and the rest of the left would be attacking him as an “activist”, “picking and choosing the laws he wants to enforce”, “legislating from the courtroom”, of professional malfeasance. There would probably already be a social media campaign underway to have him disbarred for not aggressively representing the interests of his client.

That’s just how you hypocrites roll.

You may as well just ask him when he stopped beating his wife. It’s a pointless question that does nothing but provide a “Gotcha!” no matter how it’s answered; even if you refuse to answer, it’s still a “Gotcha!”, at least once it’s fed in spoon-sized bites to your drooling masses.

Hispanic/Latin is an ethnic group, not a race. Now if you want to say she is mestizo (mix of indian [aka native american] and European/Spanish blood) you could argue that was race.

In San Antonio, ~60+% Hispanic, we predominantly use terms like ‘Hispanic’ or ‘Anglo’. I’ve heard Hispanics spit venom over the term ‘Chicano’ and they are not partial to ‘Latino’ either, although it is more widely accepted.

I heard a radio host on Spanish language radio in Houston carry on a lengthy argument with a caller over whether ‘Hispanic’ was a race or ethnic group. The argument was mostly in Spanish until the caller became flustered and switched to English to accuse the host of “betraying his race.” That was great bi-lingual entertainment.

Tell that to La Raza, wouldya?

They get a race because they vote Democratic and are on the Left.

I have an extremely hard time differentiating the variations of Latin American cultures which have had a Spanish influence, but also include Portuguese and Native cultural elements blended in, along with some black African elements from different tribal groups. Even the Mexican aspect only predominates to a degree and they are not the predominant section in my neck of the woods, which hews more towards immigrants from the Andes region.

Yet there stands La Raza in bold defiance of common sense. And they are not creatures of the right, but the left.

ajacksonian on October 21, 2014 at 6:41 AM

Why blame conservatives? Even SCOTUS has ruled on this in Hernandez v Texas back in 1954…

Oh, and FWIW, somebody should inform La Raza (translation: The Race) that it is misnamed…

Newtie and the Beauty on October 20, 2014 at 4:45 PM

I wasn’t blaming conservatives for anything.

The original post argued that Abbott could not be against inter-racial marriage because he is married to a Mexican woman (i.e., that he was married to a woman of a different “race” – Mexican).

My point was that conservatives typically don’t buy into the fiction that people from central or south America are a different race from white Americans. They generally derive from the same Europeans that north Americans did. the idea that “latinos” are a different race is a myth perpetuated by the left.

I know that the left and groups like La Raza push the silly idea that “Latinos” are a different race than other people of European descent. I was pointing out how absurd that is.

Davis’s/the left’s attack on Abbot is simply stupid and desperate. It is a desperate attempt to increase black turnout by trying to find a way to claim that Abbott is racist.

the fact that leftists think this is appropriate and don’t immediately decry it and distance themselves from Davis shows all one needs to know about the intellectual and moral bankruptcy of leftism. As always, if the left believed they were right on issues, they wouldn’t need to resort to such lies and moral turpitude. How people like verbulace believe themselves at all “good” or “honest” or even “decent” people is beyond me.

Monkeytoe on October 21, 2014 at 7:55 AM

It’s no secret, in other words, that he and his wife are of different races.

Except … they’re NOT.

When did “Latino” become a separate racial group? Separate ethnic group – sure … but then again, Norwegians are a separate ethnic group from Irish people.

Increasing more Latinos are identifying as “caucasian”. Every Latino I know says … “we’re caucasians” … they just identify differently on an ethnic basis.

HondaV65 on October 21, 2014 at 9:56 AM

This must be the “Barbie” half of “Abortion Barbie” talking.

Re: hispanic

Official definition: “A person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race.”

So, you too could be “hispanic” if you lived somewhere in central or south america and have taken a Spanish course.

But not if you are from Spain or Portugal, apparently.

Got it now? I would laugh if I wasn’t crying so much….

So help me understand this. Is it no longer racist to use perjorative terms for Mexicans, just rude and insensitive? Not that I intend to use such terms, I just want to be prepared to correct any Hispanics who accuse those who use such terms as being racist.

Oh, except if a black person or Asian makes Mexican jokes, then it’s racist against whites, if that’s even possible.

Anymore you pretty much need a handbook to sort out who it’s possible for you to be racist toward. It was much easier when it was anyone who wasn’t lily white like me.

If “Mexican” is a separate race – than “American” is a separate race as well. Not to mention Italian, Australian, Canadian, etc.

the problem is we have broadened the scope of discrimination laws such that nobody is allowed to give offense to anyone else about anything any longer. Which is just silly. Following this absurd thinking logically, we can then divide up each region and sub-region within each nation and state as its own “race”, so that people from some town in Appalachia 50 miles from another town in Appalachia are different “races” because they have slightly different accents or eat their grits with different toppings.

What started as understandable and perhaps even laudable discrimination laws has evolved and broadened (as all such things do) into ever more absurd areas. Part of being free is having to deal with jerks or being allowed to be a jerk yourself. If you eliminate all jerks and all opinions that you don’t like – is there truly any freedom? Freedom is messy.

Unfortunately, we are living in an age where the idiots control much of the law and media, so that we must constantly define discrimination down to mean “anything anyone anywhere doesn’t like”

Welcome to world of Democrat identity politics. They talk about ‘equality’, but all they do is work to divide, pander, and ultimately conquer.

It’s all about special interests, ‘fairness’, and delivering ‘social justice’ to those special interest groups based on race, nationality, gender, sexual preference, and any other way to segment, group, and pander. It’s an appeal to the desire to get something for ‘free’ – when in reality freedom is what is ultimately lost.

They use terms like ‘having their backs’ – to ‘protect’ those special interests, to pander to those special interests, and ensure that those interests will work to enable and elevate the ‘elite’ to their proper position of making ‘all of the important decisions’ in an earthly utopia that has and will never deliver on their promises.

When everyone is ‘special’, ultimately no one is ‘special’.

logicman_1998 on October 21, 2014 at 2:26 PM

There are 3 to 6 distinct races of people on planet Earth depending upon which formulation is under consideration. If we use your assertion of 3 races, Abbot would be Caucasian, and his wife would be part Mongoloid and part Caucasian–depending upon her specific ancestry. If she should be, say 62% Mongoloid and 48% Caucasian, would that be significant enough to classify her as a different race than her husband? The answer is obviously subjective, but interesting to ponder.
