Video: Dead American jihadi once worked at Minneapolis-St. Paul airport

posted at 8:31 am on September 3, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

This exclusive last night from the local Fox affiliate in the Twin Cities certainly will shake up anyone who’s flown through our international airport, which includes my whole family and all of my friends out here. One of the two Americans confirmed to have been killed while fighting for ISIS turns out to have had a pretty good job here in the US that he left behind — cleaning commercial passenger jets at Minneapolis-St. Paul airport. Not only does this raise questions about security at one of the nation’s major Midwestern hubs, it also raises questions about why Muhumed left at all:

KMSP-TV

He was the second known American killed while fighting for ISIS in Syria, and the second from Minnesota — and a Fox 9 exclusive uncovering his employment history is raising a few eyebrows.

An airport is probably the last place anyone would want a suspected terrorist to work, but before he died overseas, that’s exactly what Abdirahmaan Muhumed did in the Twin Cities. In fact, he may have cleaned your plane at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Before he died, Muhumed left behind a trail of selfies and questions. Who recruited him to join the terror group, and how did he support himself and 9 children? Multiple sources tell Fox 9 News that, for a time, he worked at a job that gave him security clearance at the airport, access to the tarmac and unfettered access to planes.

Two former employees confirmed working with Muhumed at Delta Global Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta Airlines. Earlier this year, the cleaning contract was taken over by another company, Airserv. The Metropolitan Airports Commission is in charge of granting security clearances, but a MAC person told Fox 9 News they could not comment on what Muhumed’s were due to the ongoing FBI investigation. Instead, they offered to check with Homeland Security to see if they can release any information at all.

Perhaps his radicalization came after his employment at the airport. Fox’s sources seem pretty vague on the timing of Muhumed’s employment at MSP, and doesn’t include any indications that he conducted any untoward activity during his time there. His secret life may have nothing to do with the airport at all.

One reason to conclude that there was no overlap would be that ISIS would certainly have taken advantage of it, or perhaps that Muhumed would have done so on his own. Usually the recruitment of fighters abroad by ISIS involves communication with the recruits prior to their arrival, so that they don’t find themselves under arrest in the attempt. (That happened with Shannon Maureen Conley even with coaching.)  Had Muhumed told his recruiter that he had clearance to work at a major American airport, would they have encouraged Muhumed to make the dangerous trip to Syria or Iraq, or rather stay in place and work with a cell for an attack on the US instead? Something tells me that this would have crossed their minds, to say the least.

Nevertheless, this revelation will have lots of people wondering just how tight airport security is in MSP and other airports in the US.

Update: Amy Alkon notes that “they’re groping Grandma at the airport while employing the guy who went on to die fighting for ISIS.” Yeah, maybe we need to pay a little more attention to ongoing security checks on personnel, huh?

I think from now on, they’ll just take planes down with missiles. They have the hardware, apparently, and it’s a lot easier than trying to get inside a commercial airliner.

Perhaps his radicalization came after his employment at the airport.

The concept of a radicalized muslim is a myth. A moderate muslim is simply a muslim who does not take his faith very seriously. A “radical” muslim follows the Quran word for word.

I have to say, I’ve always thought that so many ressources are wasted at airports. Scanning little old ladies and denying me makeup remover doesn’t make anyone safer. Quite the opposite, it distracts them from watching real potential terrorists.

In Minneapolis they are more concerned with bike paths and a sinful stadium with bird killing glass. The new mayor showed up at a meeting with muslim locals sporting head covering. Isn’t that special.

Esperanza on September 3, 2014 at 8:44 AM

You’re right, resources are wasted. Fundamentally, they are prudent but they are largely there to give a visible, but faux veneer of “safety” to the passenger and to act as a deterrent to potential terrorists. Unfortunately, in order to “feel the safety” the TSA gets to cop a feel or gawk at your underthings and is no deterrent to the jihadi who skips security altogether and is given the keys to the plane by the airport.

It’s my understanding that the Israelis profile in airports. They have a good track record. Let’s go in that direction. Besides, if the enemy begins to use those who supposedly blend in the crowd, fewer people will be less likely to stay quiet when they see something untoward with a friend, family member, colleague, or acquaintance because they won’t be terrorized for being politically incorrect.

You give the troll way too much credit. This is someone that would rather see Americans die than offend some Muslim. I can assure you that if middle-aged white guys were terrorists and they profiled me I would thank them for their diligence. But that doesn’t happen does it? Just like there is no evidence that they will somehow use people who don’t look like them. But lets face it, if we eliminate all the ones that do look like them from committing a terrorist act isn’t that a good thing? Isn’t making it harder for them to commit an atrocity the smart thing to do? Honestly, the lack of critical thinking of left wing nuts……

Difficultas_Est_Imperium on September 3, 2014 at 9:28 AM

It’s not limited to the MSP airport. The Mall of America is also an employment hub for the local muslim community. The FBI estimates a dozen Minneapolis residents are fighting jihadis in ISIS. That means it’s probably two or three dozen residents. ISIS threatens to attack on US soil. The Army and the Minneapolis & St. Paul police departments recently held joint maneuvers which consisted of Blackhawk’s flying between downtown high rise buildings. Our local and state governments are ‘laser’ focused on important issues like changing the name of Columbus Day (Indigenous Persons Day) and Asian Carp (Invasive Species Carp) so we don’t ‘offend’ anyone. To quote Allah P., “Dude, I’m worried”.

Kidfromjersey on September 3, 2014 at 9:32 AM

We’ll never know the answer to that. Maybe he just got tired of waiting on orders and dealing with 9 kids. The diversity crowd will never admit their error and will demand more of it until it works. I operate aircraft through the Msp hub frequently, and have for years. It was disturbing to me back then that our response to the ” Blackhawk Down” fiasco was to employ as many as them as possible at the airport.

What could possibly go wrong?

On a side note, a friend of mine was over there as a Blackhawk driver. He told me a great story about how sympathetic the embedded CNN reporters were to the natives, while hostile to our military. They insisted on venturing out unescorted, as the skinnys were just misunderstood children of Islam.

When their convoy came limping back shot to pieces one day, that lovefest was over. Nobody on post shed a tear either.
