Your tax dollars at work: PBS to air pro-abortion “After Tiller” movie tomorrow

posted at 3:31 pm on August 31, 2014 by Dustin Siggins

In 2013, Planned Parenthood received $540.6 million dollars from various government sources to kill unborn children. Now, PBS is using your tax dollars to promote this evil practice.

Tomorrow night, at 10 p.m. Eastern, PBS is showing “After Tiller,” a documentary that follows the lives of four late-term abortion doctors after their colleague George Tiller was shot. The movie, according to the directors, is to “change public perception of third-trimester abortion providers by building a movement dedicated to supporting their right to work with a special focus on maintaining their safety.” The movie has previously been screened for Members of Congress, “with the goal of ultimately affecting votes related to abortion rights.”

Perhaps even more egregious than the showing is what PBS is also providing with your dollars. From my LifeSiteNews colleague Kirsten Andersen:

Meanwhile, concerned parents should be advised that the film may soon be showing in a classroom near you. Because PBS is airing the documentary as part of its “POV” series, described as “documentaries with a point of view,” the network has made a “partner toolkit” available and is encouraging teachers and activists to borrow the documentary and host screenings in their classrooms and communities. The “toolkit” includes publicity materials, a discussion guide, lesson plan and reading list.

The toolkit, which can be seen here, has graphics entitled “How States Restrict Abortion.” It also asks discussion participants to ask what the nation needs after Tiller. Samples offered are “information,” “information,” and “dialogue.” Likewise, pro-life sidewalk counselors are called “anti-abortion,” while the pro-abortion side is described as “pro-choice” and supporting “abortion rights” and “reproductive rights.”

And the abortion-supporting research group Guttmacher is regularly cited in the toolkit.

On Friday, I got a couple of answers from PBS on the whole debacle, including their reasoning for showing the documentary:

POV told LifeSiteNews, “We do believe that ‘After Tiller’ adds another dimension to an issue that is being debated widely.” Asked if POV will show a pro-life documentary, the organization said that it “does not have any other films currently scheduled on this issue. POV received almost 1000 film submissions each year through our annual call for entries and we welcome the opportunity to consider films with a range of points of view.”

When asked whether POV was concerned about alienating its viewership — since PBS received… federal tax dollars in 2012 and half of Americans identify as pro-life — POV said, “The filmmakers would like the film to add to the discussion around these issues. Abortion is already a legal procedure.”

“This is an issue that people feel passionately about and will have a passionate response to. We are hopeful that the majority of people can see it for what it is, another lens on a very difficult issue.”

Got that? PBS wants to air a discussion about third-trimester abortions, which the directors of “After Tiller” admit is only supported by 14 percent of the American people. And what is that small minority supporting? Only the complete dismemberment of children who can feel pain, including those who can survive outside the womb. (For the realities of how abortion works, check out the detailed congressional testimony of former abortionist Anthony Levatino of how abortion is done — complete with “suction catheters” and a clamp.)

Last week, pro-life activists around the country used Twitter to protest PBS’ decision to show this egregiously pro-abortion movie. Unfortunately, PBS appears intent on showing the film to families tomorrow night, so perhaps pro-lifers can submit films that POV could show to offset the dishonest representations of late-term abortions and Dr. Leroy Carhart — one of the abortionists who, despite the sympathetic portrayal in “After Tiller,” has seen multiple women horribly injured and killed during abortions at his clinics.

Here are some ideas:

1. Via Live Action Communications Director Drew Belsky, one of his organization’s undercover video about a late-term abortion facility in Arizona.
2. Via pro-life blogger and former nurse Jill Stanek, “After the Choice,” which looks at the experiences of women who have had abortions. Or, also via Stanek, the pro-life documentary “Life Happens.

And for a discussion topic, perhaps POV could point to the opinion of a Planned Parenthood lobbyist that it’s okay to kill a baby that survives an abortion.

George W. Bush Appointed Federal Judge Blocks Texas Abortion Law To Close Clinics – The Same Controversial Law that Wendy Davis Filibustered for Hours and Made Herself into A National Figure

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A federal judge Friday threw out new Texas abortion restrictions that would have effectively closed more than a dozen clinics in the state.

U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel sided with clinics that sued over one of the most disputed measures of a sweeping anti-abortion bill signed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry in 2013. The ruling stops new restrictions that would have left seven abortion facilities in Texas come Monday. There are currently 19 abortion providers in the state, according to groups challenging the law.

“The overall effect of the provisions is to create an impermissible obstacle as applied to all women seeking a previability abortion,” Yeakel wrote in his 21-page ruling.

The trial in Texas was the latest battle over tough new abortion restrictions sweeping across the U.S. TexasAttorney General Greg Abbott, a Republican who is the favorite to become governor next year, vowed to appeal to try to uphold the law.

The law would require abortion facilities in Texas to meet hospital-level operating standards, which supporters say will protect women’s health.

Clinics called it a backdoor effort to outlaw abortions, which has been a constitutional right since the Roe v. Wade ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1973.

“It’s an undue burden for women in Texas — and thankfully today the court agreed,” said Amy Hagstrom Miller, CEO of Whole Woman’s Health, which would have been among the clinic operators affected. “The evidence has been stacking up against the state and against the politicians who so cynically passed these laws in the name of safety.”

VegasRick on August 31, 2014 at 4:13 PM

It should be absolutely obvious to anyone with more than half a brain that the leftists in this country cannot compete with conservative ideas unless and until they are subsidized by government (taxpayer) funds. That taxpayers should have to shell out any money for non-essential services like PBS and NPR is criminal, just like the tortured explanation that justifies “Income Tax.”
.
To turn the screw a little, let’s suggest that NPR and PBS have to give equal time and quality to the direct opposite POV, in every case and every time any objection is voiced, whether they (the outlets) recognize the objection or not. Let’s spend that taxpayer money on lawyers and court costs, shall we? “Alinsky” them into submission by making them live up to their own rules.
.
If I ever win a lottery, I will find a lawyer who is on the conservative side of things and sue until I’m tired of it… which will be never. Anybody that recognizes and countenances abortions, especially those after the first trimester is a murdering freak. Abortion. Is. Murder.

ExpressoBold on August 31, 2014 at 4:13 PM

The counter-narrative that should be used here:

Who, in 2014, needs a late-term abortion? Perinatal medicine and maternal-fetal medicine as of 2014 ensure that a woman who has been receiving basic prenatal care will know well in advance of any trouble if she is getting pre-eclamptic. She will know about most birth defects before the end of the first trimester. The minimum gestational age at which a preemie can be saved by 2014 medicine has now reached a point before pregnant women go eclamptic. It is easier for the woman to have an early induction or emergency C-Section, and the baby to have a stay in the NICU than to abort that late in a pregnancy.

Various social programs can pay for prenatal care if the woman can’t afford it, and FMLA ensures she will not face adverse job consequences should she need to leave her job early to go on bed rest.

So again, who needs to wait 20 weeks for an abortion in 2014? Most “Pro-choicers” will respond with narratives straight out of 1965, when preemies before 25 weeks were just going to die, pre-eclampsia was harder to check for, and prenatal diagnosis was practically nonexistent or very risky (amniocentesis) before the fetus reached a minimum size, in the old days of ultrasound.

Lefties have a hard time breaking free of the past and recognizing that “things have changed.” Especially guilty are lefties like Oprah Winfrey who has made a fortune promoting White Guilt and rectifying wrongs that have long ago been corrected. I’d like to see her fund a movie about black football players who feel so entitled that they beat up their women folk, knock them out in elevators, drag them into the hallway and face so very few consequences. Instead, she concentrates on “the color purple” and a butler who serves white presidents.
.
She really does have to remind people that the past is the past and virtually no one, today, is experiencing the kind of oppression she wants to pretend exists. Have a Swisher Sweet, on me, Oprah, and I don’t even smoke.

Abortion reform call as record number of babies survive birth at 23 weeks

AT LEAST 120 babies born during week 23 of a pregnancy — the last week when abortions on demand are legal — have survived in the past four years, The Sunday Times can reveal.

New figures show the number of babies who are born before the 24-week legal abortion limit and survive is rising at large hospitals with specialist doctors. The real number of week 23 babies who survived is likely to be higher, as it is based on a sample of 25 hospitals that replied to a request under freedom of information laws.

Let me lend my own eeyorish voice and point out that the US has already had over 50 million abortions with tacit approval and acceptance of… virtually everybody, since it clearly hasn’t been considered important enough to have a civil war over.

If you’re of the religious inclination I think THAT brings a lot more damnation upon a country than an infinite number of gay wedding cakes or scantily glad MTV singers.

50 million is a number just about too great to contemplate, isn’t it? It would fall well ahead of the Holocaust and Stalin’s purges and just behind Mao’s Great Leap Forward as the most massive intentional extinguishing of human life, ever.

Secularly speaking, the CBO recently issued a report that established that every abortion was a net economic gain, since the potential child would no longer have education, healthcare, housing, welfare, etc. costs and would emit no carbon or produce any strain on national infrastructure. Take that arithmetic to it’s logical conclusion if you dare.

Why is it such a big deal if the judge was a GWB appointee? Democrats in the Senate were committed to blocking so many of his picks that it’s not like Bush was able to just push through reliably conservative judges. Then-Sen. Obama voted against giving John Roberts an up-or-down vote, the same John Roberts who upheld Obamacare. And John Roberts was actually Bush’s first pick, not someone he had to choose after his first choice had been blocked. Given the Senate Democrats’ efforts to stop Bush from getting his choices through, it should be no wonder that some of his picks would end up being pretty liberal.

I haven’t seen this, but I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that they aren’t actually going to show what happens in a late-term abortion. Those who support the legality of late-term abortion are strangely reluctant to actually show what it is they condone.

MinnesotaSlinger on August 31, 2014 at 4:38 PM

Stoic Patriot on August 31, 2014 at 3:39 PM

I’m glad you highlighted that sentence, because I would’ve glossed over it as a standard apology for abortion. But no. It makes no attempt to justify killing babies, which would address the issue of our perception of what they do. It merely says that they have a right to work. Like child molesters have a right to molest children, and mass murderers have a right to murder en masse. Pity they don’t apply that logic to coal miners, oil industry workers, loggers, farmers, or any other productive and legitimate activity.

What is it with the Left’s worship of abortion?

major dad on August 31, 2014 at 3:36 PM

A better question is: what is it with the Left’s hatred of all things good and sacred?

If you begin to understand the spirit driving these people, you begin to get a grasp on why.

Cleombrotus on August 31, 2014 at 8:15 PM

Secularly speaking, the CBO recently issued a report that established that every abortion was a net economic gain, since the potential child would no longer have education, healthcare, housing, welfare, etc. costs and would emit no carbon or produce any strain on national infrastructure. Take that arithmetic to it’s logical conclusion if you dare.

TaraMaclay on August 31, 2014 at 4:28 PM

It’s not a zero sum game. Children grow up to be contributing members of society usually. Or are you saying that all people (aborted citizens included) must justify their “cost” on earth?

My logical conclusion is that everything Tara Maclay just said, comes right out of AGENDA 21.

Agnostics, atheists, and anti-theists are incapable of understanding the logic of the living God.

Ergo, they’re incapable of understanding what matters most.

God’s priorities trump ALL others . . . . . God is always right … period.

Apparently the average American will now consume more public service dollars than they will pay tax dollars in their lifetime, so the only fiscally sound thing to do is to kill us.

The same CBO study also said illegal immigration was a net gain because unlike the aborted babies, an adult immigrant doesn’t need public school, etc.

The fallacy there is obvious, too, since the immigrant will have children of their own, but I suppose in a perfect world they get abortions too and the jobs their children would have done are then taken by a different wave of immigrants.

You seem to be under the idea that I’m advocating this, though. I’m just retreading a story HotAir covered a year ago

The filmmakers would like the film to add to the discussion around these issues.

You keep using that word “discussion”. I don’t think you know what it means.

If life were fair, the offices of PBS would burn down during the showing of it.

Dusty on August 31, 2014 at 3:56 PM

Your punitive desires are exactly what I would expect from anyone with as disgusting of a morality as you have. Do you want the PBS exec to be burned at the stake or dragged by horses through the streets before being quartered as your Inquisitor predessors did?

thuja on August 31, 2014 at 11:16 PM

For the giant waste of taxpayer dollars that PBS is, that is indeed a tempting offer.

nobar on August 31, 2014 at 11:58 PM

I agree that this documentary is outrageous, particularly in its use of taxpayer dollars.

That said, our side is continuing to fall into the trap of arguing that third trimester abortions as somehow extra-super-duper heinous. The only difference between a first trimester abortion and a third trimester abortion is when it takes place. Both are the deliberate and intentional murdering of an innocent human life, and both are evil acts.

By focusing on these third trimester abortions, we set ourselves up with a situation where the “reasonable” compromise is reached of outlawing them, while allowing abortions up to 20 weeks or whatever number is pulled out of a hat.

All abortion is wrong. All abortion is evil. All abortion should be illegal. And we should debate from that point of view.

Shump on September 1, 2014 at 12:14 AM

[thuja on August 31, 2014 at 11:16 PM]

You are such a moron. The PBS offices have smoke alarms, fire alarms and sprinkler systems. No one would die.

And to answer you further (and arhooley [on August 31, 2014 at 4:27 PM] at the same time on a related point), I think it would be fair play if PBS’ offices burned down for showing a documentary on the pro-murder of Thuja, while at the same time I would think it good to laud PBS if they were to show a documentary on defending the life of Thuja.

To make it perfectly clear:

Pro rape –> PBS offices burn down
Defend against rape — Laud PBS
Pro Bank Robbery –> PBS offices burn down
Defend against Bank Robbery –> Laud PBS

This is a pretty simple morality issue.

Dusty on September 1, 2014 at 12:18 AM

This “reasonable compromise” will never be reached, either. The end goal of the left isn’t to put a term limit on abortion, it’s to legalize infanticide into the months after the infant is born.

Google for “after birth abortion” in… the Journal of Medical Ethics.

TaraMaclay on September 1, 2014 at 12:41 AM

You know, those feet that Dr. Gosnell kept from his young victims, whatever happened to those? I was thinking that Ned Pepper and other pro-aborts might like to wear grisly necklaces to show their support for such mass-murderers.

What on earth are you talking about? The women who have abortions are victims, too, of the culture of death. They need our support and our prayers, to deal with this tragedy. There is always forgiveness, and there are plenty of abortion after-care programs out there, like Project Rachel and Rachel’s Vineyard.

Ward Cleaver on September 1, 2014 at 1:43 AM

That’s not what he wrote. You can distinguish an evil act from an evil person. Having an abortion doesn’t necessarily make you an evil person, but an abortion is an evil act.

Let me help you out. All death-cults, whether abortionists or Muslims, have one thing in common; their hatred for the God of the Bible and their hatred for Jesus of Nazareth. They will do ANYTHING to promote their culture of death.

oldleprechaun on September 1, 2014 at 10:51 AM

Tiller murdered no human being. Pro-lifer Scott Roeder did murder a human being. About the only thing good I have to say about the pro-life movement is that isn’t as evil in Islam in that the pro-lifers weren’t in the streets dancing for joy over their movement’s success in murdering a human being.

What a good point about pro-aborts! I mean it’s not like pro-lifers tend to flaunt any symbol for a method to torture people to death. I am so sure I haven’t seen any pro-lifer with a crucifix.

And the “discussion” is all from the baby killers point of view. That’s not a discussion it’s propaganda.

CW on September 1, 2014 at 5:26 PM

It was a compelling documentary. Many of the patients do have pregnancies with lethal anomalies and hearing them saying they had bought a crib and baby furniture was moving. But I was disturbed by the 16 year old who wanted a termination at 25 weeks despite the fact the boy (father’s) family had said they would adopt it and raise it and the mother would have no responsibility. 16 years old. And Dr Susan Robinson was going on about personal choice and “Who am I….” She’s 16 years old! A 16 year old needs to be TOLD. It was a fair documentary.
