Scientists abandon science to popularize climate change alarmism

posted at 12:01 pm on August 26, 2014 by Noah Rothman

Nothing says confidence in the verdict of history and an unwavering faith in ultimate vindication like gauche emotional manipulation. Similar to so many tropes on the left, the issue of climate change has evolved from a public policy challenge into just another shibboleth – a special knock, knowledge of which allows you access to the liberal speakeasy.

Let’s perform a thought experiment. Take a look at the faces below. What emotion do you see displayed?

Scientist 1

scientist 2

Scientist 3

Scientist 4

I would say, respectively, bored, skeptical, hungry, and engaged. You probably came up with a number of different responses.

Now look at them again with the knowledge that all of the above are climate scientists who are supposedly struggling to maintain their composure during a panicked discussion about the post-apocalyptic Hellscape that awaits us in a future defined by climate shifts.

That’s how The Huffington Post primed its readers before featuring images of these and other scientific professionals purportedly wracked with anxiety over the pressing problem of global climate change.

“We’ve read the daunting headlines. We’ve seen the bleak predictions. We know in our minds that climate change is putting our Earth’s future in danger,” the Huffington Post’s write up on a series of photographs called “Scared Scientists” by artist Nick Bowers. “And yet there’s something uniquely frightening about this artist’s attempt to transform global warming data into visceral, human responses.”

Frightening? They might as well be dramatic headshots. You could probably book a recurring role on an HBO drama with one of these – at least, get you past the casting director’s door.

This was just one of Tuesday’s attempts by climate activists to tug at your heartstrings in lieu of a logical argument.

“Scientists are used to talking about climate change in facts and figures, a discussion framed around parts-per-million concentrations of carbon dioxide, millimeters of sea-level rise, and degrees of global temperatures,” a piece in Tuesaday’s National Journal opened. “[Australian National University student] Joe Duggan wants them to talk about their feelings.”

Duggan said the project is meant to engage the broader public, who despite seeing facts about climate change can feel “apathetic” or simply overwhelmed by the volume of data. He thought that letting experts use an emotional pitch might help the layperson connect with their work.

“The scientists that have penned letters for this project are scared, angry, anxious, and at times hopeful and optimistic,” he said in an email. “These are real feelings that everyone has experienced in their lives. But the scientists aren’t feeling this way about an anniversary or a pressing deadline. They’re feeling this way about the fate of our planet.”

Duggan said the experts he’s reached out to have expressed “relief” at being able to express their emotions and he’s even starting hearing from more researchers who want to participate. He’s also been getting responses from the general public on his website and through Twitter.

How insulting.

Only the most emotionally stunted cannot anticipate the fact that a campaign centered on talking down to one’s audience is unlikely to result in a deluge of newfound public support. But these and other forms of casual condescension are what the climate alarmism movement has become.

So often, those who are skeptical of the claims that catastrophic climate shifts will result in dramatic changes to the environment in a timeframe too short to allow for acclimation are told they are “deniers” – e.g. something akin to those who cling, in the face of all contrary evidence, to the notion that the Holocaust never occurred. And yet, those who evangelize about the terrible future that awaits us if we do not address climate change with policy prescriptions, most of which center on personal deprivation and the defining of prosperity down, appeal to the heart over the head in order to make their case.

The logical contentions have failed, they seem to reason. Rather than examine that critically, they chose to shift tactics from argumentation to shaming and emoting. This is not a tactic which respects its audience as thinking individuals. The public knows an advertising campaign when they see one.

My heartstrings weren’t tugged, but I did get a good chuckle imagining the liberals tearing-up over these photos as they wandered around their studio apartments, arms crossed over their bellies and staring at the floor.

Bored seems fitting. Who knows how many shots the photographer wanted to take to ‘get it just right.’ They were probably sitting on the photography chair for a good hour at least. But hey, that’s what actors- I mean, scientists are paid to do, right?

No? Must be something wrong with these scientists.

I have been a casting director and I’ve gone through hundreds of heat shots in the last 30 years. I would say those photos show me nothing (unless I was casting for a dead body extra). They are devoid of any expression. A good psychologist would have a hard time trying to “read” those faces.

As par for the course, conservatives get bogged down in the minutia and fail to see the big picture. You fall short of understanding that the methods used to save our planet are inconsequential, it is only the eventually cure that ultimately matters. These brave scientists and saviors deserve our praise and worship, not scorn and ridicule. They courageously stood alone and selflessly risked their professional reputations in a heroic attempt to save us all.

Unbridled and uninhibited capitalism has been a perpetual cancer on our planet – it has ridden the backs of our poor and disadvantaged for far too long. Programs, laws, policies and taxes to defend our planet from global warming (or global cooling) are simply the scalpels needed to remove the tumor. Concerns over population explosions, acid rain, ozone depletion, and worldwide starvation have also served honorably in this battle against greed and oppression. The road to salvation may take many paths.

Perhaps there would have been more faith in global warming/climate change if any, you know, global warming/climate change had actually happened years ago when these people were telling us we only had months, or at most a couple of years, to take action. Or if we hadn’t had some of the coldest winters and coolest summers in a century lately. Or if our coastal cities are not underwater, as they kept telling us they would be by now.

All I get out of this latest campaign is that these people have some emotional issues that could be addressed with counseling and SSRIs.

They must have just read, The Age of Global Warming, A History by Rupert Darwall and realized their belief (that is void of understanding) is nothing but a political power grab on a global scale.
Suffering the reality that their fanaticism is falling upon ears who have significantly valid doubts about something that is part of fundamental planetary behaviour.
Someday these folks will just go overboard and claim that the greatest threat to global warming is water vapor (and it IS the pivotal driver for atmospheric behaviour) and as such it must be eliminated from our atmosphere.
Stay tuned.

An excerpt from the Breitbart London post:

But we now know, thanks to research by Australian scientist Jennifer Marohasy, that the hysteria this story generated was based on fabrications and lies.
Though the Bureau of Meteorology has insisted its data adjustments are “robust”, it has been unable to come up with a credible explanation as to why it translated real-world data showing a cooling trend into homogenized data showing a warming trend.
She wrote:
“Repetition is a propaganda technique. The deletion of information from records, and the use of exaggeration and half-truths, are others. The Bureau of Meteorology uses all these techniques, while wilfully ignoring evidence that contradicts its own propaganda.’’
This is a global problem. Earlier this year, Breitbart reported that similarly dishonest adjustments had been made to temperature records by NASA and NOAA. Similarly implicated are the UK temperature records of the Met Office Hadley Centre and at Phil “Climategate” Jones’s disgraced Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia.

Charge them with criminal misappropriation of money. Charge them with lying on federal affidavits. Shame them publicly for altering data. Those who are employed by NOAA, NASA, and American Universities that receive tax moneys should be immediately fired. As our weather prevarications diverge from reality (wrong forecasts) these schmucks blame global warming for making their forecast programs not work right. I think the same mentality that got us into this AGW lie, just don’t know how to operate their proven weather forecasting programs. (Those are entirely different from the badly programmed global warming algorithms. GI-GO!)

How about if we spend our money on being able to survive whatever kind of weather/climate we get instead of trying to stop something that we can’t stop?
If it gets too hot, we need air conditioning, refrigeration, freezers, sun shelters for crops, the ability to transport water to drought areas (see Kalifornia)….
If it gets too cold, we need heating, greenhouses for crops, snow and ice removal….
If the oceans rise, we need to get all those buildings and people away from the coastlines, or build floating cities,….

I know – too logical, right?

Why with higher taxes and more government control, which would of necessity lower the population’s standard of living. isn’t that amazing?

Go back and look at the “chilling” photos again but think, “Photographer captures images of people who just accidentally farted in front of strangers.”

Surprising how well it works.

Raquel Pinkbullet on August 26, 2014 at 12:16 PM

Actual thoughts:

First headshot, guy: “OMG, the frijoles! I should’na had the frijoles for breakfast!”

Second headshot, woman: “Oh, geez, did this guy next to me just fart? Crap, that’s awful! What died inside of him?!”

Third headshot, guy: “Puke, is that her? I thought she was kinda hot, but ugh…”

Fourth headshot, woman: “Did I clean all six litter boxes before I left the kitties this morning?”

Why should these climate alarmists be upset? They already got their wish when the Obama EPA sidestepped Congress to impose “rules” on CO2 emissions which basically prevent anyone from permitting a new power plant, including those burning natural gas (which is recently very plentiful, thanks to fracking) and emits less CO2 than coal.

Now imagine the faces of those people who have to remove a foot of white global warming from their roads and driveways next winter. They might end up emitting some CO2 from their plows and snow-blowers to warm up the winter.

Take a look at the faces below. What emotion do you see displayed?

I hope my funding grant comes through! This ‘global warming’ thing sure does grease the skids….I’m gonna ride that gravey train as long as I can!

What emotion do you see displayed?

The terror that they will all be found out as frauds and will have to get a job to make a living……

redguy on August 26, 2014 at 12:04 PM

I see parallels between the racial grievance huckster community and the Warmists. They all make such a fine living that they can’t admit that their cause is all a fraud, because they have no other way to make a living.

slickwillie2001 on August 26, 2014 at 2:22 PM

Looks to me like people thinking:
‘Seventeen and a half years without any global warming. I may very well lose my federal government global warming funding and have to find real work that pays for actual results.’

RJL on August 26, 2014 at 2:37 PM

Anyone who isn’t even a bit suspicious that every civilization-level crisis we’ve discussed in the last 50 years had the exact same solution is too naive to be taken seriously. Just review how we were to solve the population bomb, resource depletion, global cooling and global warming. Why with higher taxes and more government control, which would of necessity lower the population’s standard of living. isn’t that amazing?

Forty years ago, when I was in high school, we were going to die because of a “New Ice Age”- unless we got rid of technology and became an agrarian socialist feudal state operating at roughly Bronze Age levels.

Twenty years ago, that changed to “Global Warming will destroy us all”- unless we got rid of technology and became an agrarian socialist feudal state operating at roughly Bronze Age levels.

The same datasets were and are used to support both hypotheses. In each case, the main “proof” is… computer models.

When the same conditions are “guaranteed” to create two entirely different and diametrically-opposed end-products, somebody is lying, stupid, or both. Physics simply does not work that way, including atmospheric physics, which is what we’re mainly talking about here.

(NB: I have studied meteorology, geology, vulcanology, and geophysics at the college level. I am by no means a Ph.D, but I do know the terms and especially the procedures of the field, the latter of which I see routinely violated by the “climate alarmists”.)

When you are told that one set of circumstances will cause two different “dooms”, and that only one solution will “save” us, you can be sure that the “solution” is the prime desideratum and that the “dooms” are simply an excuse.

“Warmists” are not just alarmists. They are neo-Luddite, socialist, anti-civilization fanatics who are determined to destroy Western civilization and rule the human race. Or rather, the five percent or so who survive their brand of “creating Eden”.

They should be deposited on a desert island buck-naked, and told, “You want to live in communion with Holy Mother Gaia? Fine. Get to it.”

The island should then be declared off limits for a century. It would be interesting to see what sort of society the survivors (if any) create.

My money is on it looking like William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies.

They’re panicking…..just think of all the lost money….er….ah…..research grants! To say nothing of the bruised egos.

I thought they’d learned their lesson about preaching “the Apocalypse”.

Like when Cat 5 hurricanes would follow one after another after Katrine.

Like the statement that the North Pole would be “ice-free” by 2014.

This is the penultimate link to fight AGW Alarmists. When they try to change topic on you from something you are very knowledgable, just reference from here to teach em humility. Popular Technology has been doing an excellent job of mocking the hardcore enviro-extremists with solid evidence.

OregonPolitician on August 26, 2014 at 2:58 PM

Anyone who would allow their photo to be used in this manner is NOT a scientist. They are either an ideologue, or a money grubbing charlatan. Or both.

True science has nothing to do with emotions. The fact that these snake oil salesmen are stooping this low shows they have no real science to back up their idiotic claims.

If universities were still worth anything nowadays, these to so-called scientists should be stripped of any degrees they ever ‘earned’.

ZeusGoose on August 26, 2014 at 3:52 PM

Science has nothing to do with emotion, “consensus” or “group think”. All of which the global warming frauds, have been using as their main arguments, along with fabricated, faux data.

It’s all nothing but a scam to defraud taxpayer dollars, and speed legislation further down the road of socialism.

txdoc on August 26, 2014 at 4:04 PM

They should go back to studying that age old question – “Did the chicken come first or the egg.”

Once they get the correct answer, I’ll listen to them about AGW. Until then, I’ll go with climate change being natural.

Australia is really starting to catch on:

BOM finally explains! Cooling changed to warming trends because stations “might” have moved!

More unrecorded station moves in Rutherglen in Victoria
A cooling trend of -0.35C became a warming trend of +1.73C.

The BOM says:

Rutherglen: the major adjustments in minimum temperature data are in 1966 and 1974. Both were detected through comparisons with neighbours. The nature of the change is consistent with the site moving from a location near the main experimental farm buildings (which are on a small hill) to its current location on low-lying flat ground (minimum temperatures are normally higher on slopes than on flat ground or in valley bottoms).

BOM is Bureau of Meteorology. Those responsible for the official temperature record of the country.
OOPS! Apparently the site of the station never actually did move and remains in the same position:
Big adjustments? BOM says Rutherglen site shifted, former workers there say “No”

For those who don’t follow the climate drama regularly, there has been widescale fraud going on with temperature adjustments to the raw data across the entire world.

Tony Heller (aka Steven Goddard) documents much of the fraud for the US temperature record at his blog: http://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/

Great, me too. Now if could only get them to stop stealing billions of taxpayer dollars we don’t have, to fund their little fantasy.

Meople on August 26, 2014 at 4:18 PM

They thought they could take over the world, that that stock they bought it the carbon off sets would make them rich…

They were so sure that space ship was coming that night they sat on the roof top all night… it didn’t, now what, they sold everything!

On Rush’s site, The Algore countdown continues: In 1-1/2 years we will be fried! (Then it will be ten years since his prediction.) Funny it seems cooler to me now than it did when he made the prediction. The august scientist Ted Danson actually predicted ten years in 1988, but that’s how much Hollywood knows!

For the skeptical climate enthusiasts, I urge you to regularly visit the following sites/blogs (too many to provide links without going into moderation):

Wattsupwiththat (Anthony Watts. #1 science blog on the internet)

Real Science (“Steven Goddard”‘s blog)

Climate Audit (Steve McIntyre, extremely good reading for those who are more technically/scientifically/statistically inclined)

Climate Depot (Marc Morano former Inhofe staffer)

Bishop Hill

JoNova (“Skeptical Science for dissident thinker”, based in Australia but covers a lot of American stuff as well)

Roy Spencer (Dr.)

Climate etc. (blog from Dr. Judith Curry at Georgia Tech)

I read these sites almost daily and even visit some of the not-so skeptical global warming/climate change pages. Let me tell you, the skeptical sites listed above provide far more in depth scientific discussion. They also provide a stark contrast to the misinformation in the media surrounding global climate change.
