Chicago robberies drop 20% after concealed carry permits are issued

posted at 9:21 am on August 25, 2014 by Jazz Shaw

When’s the last time you heard any good news out of Chicago, at least as it relates to crime figures? Well, prepare yourselves for a change from the status quo. While the murder rate and gang violence are still bad – and frequently in the local news – the robbery rate has gone down recently. And the police think they might know why.

Since Illinois started granting concealed carry permits this year, the number of robberies that have led to arrests in Chicago has declined 20 percent from last year, according to police department statistics. Reports of burglary and motor vehicle theft are down 20 percent and 26 percent, respectively. In the first quarter, the city’s homicide rate was at a 56-year low.

“It isn’t any coincidence crime rates started to go down when concealed carry was permitted. Just the idea that the criminals don’t know who’s armed and who isn’t has a deterrence effect,” said Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association. “The police department hasn’t changed a single tactic — they haven’t announced a shift in policy or of course — and yet you have these incredible numbers.”

The article also tells the story of an 86 year old resident (not being named to protect his safety) who fired his legal, concealed carry weapon at an armed robber causing the suspect to freeze in his tracks, allowing the police to make the arrest. He also stood outside the scene of the robbery, preventing other potential shoppers (and potential victims) from entering and being at risk in the middle of the crime scene. It’s only one isolated incident, but as an example it demonstrates how even on the streets of Chicago, one good guy with a gun was able to make a difference.

I don’t expect to see these numbers being touted by Chicago’s mayor or the national media, but they should. The Windy City is one of the areas of the nation most plagued by violence and their efforts to make the entire metropolis a “gun free zone” have only fueled further violence by those who weren’t going to pay attention to the laws in the first place.

Let’s not kid ourselves. Guns are evil. This precipitous drop in crime is the direct result of Obama’s community organizing over a decade ago.

Either:

1. It will simply not be reported and swept under the rug, or;
2. The Democrats will credit some policy of Rahm’s in the hopes the low information voters eat it up (which they will).

As others have said, they will simply ignore it. That which does not fit the agenda is not put out and thus; for the world of the progressive left, it never happened. This prevents any need to explain contradictions. How can their followers be so cocksure of their ideas? They never see them refuted so they must be true.

What’s really sad are the tone of the comments in the Chicago Tribune. It’s almost like the liberals want these robberies to happen unhindered.

All the usual suspects on the left are even now pledging “this shall not stand”, and beginning legal proceedings to get those CCWs revoked, or at least publish the names and addresses of their holders. With the connivance of the Tiny Dancer and his posse, plus the media.

They like rule by terror with the gangs supplying the terror. It makes them simultaneously feel powerful, and like true revolutionary warriors in the mould of Che’!, their idol.

Not to mention the fact that they just simply find the deaths and maimings of “little people” entertaining. Because it reminds them once more that they are “on top”.

Now you know why the Coliseum had such high walls around the arena, below even the cheap seats. Even the plebeians got to look down on the Christians and Jews as the lions closed in on them.

Can’t read the comments; behind a paywall, but I believe you.

What is astounding to me is that the fools aren’t anticipating an increase in gun violence with more cc, since they’re convinced all those loose guns will be ending up in toddlers’ hands, or dropped while grabbing for change, or wrested from women’s weak little hands during rapes and robberies, or killing innocents who are slaughtered by over-zealous cc’ing bystanders during an active-shooter incident and all the other gun accidents they gloomily foresee with a lawfully armed citizenry.

Since the Ferguson shooting I have heard/read several black protestors invoke Malcom X and Huey Newton in context of white cops shooting black men. The obvious absurdity is that both of these black leaders were killed by other black men. To me, these invocations further scream about the epidemic of black on black violent crime rather than anything to do with white cops or any other race or profession. It’s almost sad parody.

When neither are on your side, pound the table, I.E., march in the streets with emotive signs.
When the facts contradict your Lefty theories, bury the story and slink away quietly.

I am a strong supporter of concealed carry here in Chicago. It will make my job just a little easier(less robberies). I will share some insight, that we (CPD detectives) are also being pressured to reclassify robberies to thefts or batteries to help lower the violent crime index. So I wonder how much if the 20% drop is related to CCW and how much is related to me changing a robbery to a battery.

The only problem I have with this story, and the statistics presented, would be this line:

the number of robberies that have led to arrests in Chicago has declined 20 percent from last year

They could also make this stat come down by just not arresting people for robbery – although I doubt even Rahmbo would be so stupid as to try that spin to deny the impact of CCW.

At the VMA awards they had a moment of silence for Mike Brown.

Why is Mike Brown dead?

Because of the gangsta lifestyle.

Who promotes the gangsta lifestyle?

The artists at the VMA awards.

And Mike Brown isn’t the only blood on their hands. There are 6500 black handgun homicide victims per year-90% at the hands of other blacks, and the black gangsta community keep trying to divert attention from their culpubility on the issue by blaming racist white cops, who may shoot 180 blacks per year, most of them justified.

A “Huey P Newton Gun Club” has arisen in Dallas, and they are doing patrols (open carrying long weapons) in some neighborhoods. While they have said they are there to protect the ‘hood from any bad policemen, they also said they want to stop the black-on-black crime. They are essentially claiming to be “self-help”.

I applaud them on their efforts, as long as they stay on the right side of the law. The Dallas sheriff says he “supports every citizen in the exercise of their Constitutional rights.” I concur. (Naming it after Huey P Long is sorta dumb, though.)

One of the Baltimore Police Captains stops arresting people in his precinct for drug charges. He uses a city block that’s completely vacant and obscure from the rest of the city to allow the drug dealers to move to ply their trade under the “supervision” of the cops. He ends up receiving a commendation because crime rates dropped around 20%.

cpddet on August 25, 2014 at 11:03 AM

Wouldn’t that tend to make your battery rates increase? Are there any categories that are increasing at the same time?

Or to get around that, I guess you could simply let people go and not book the robbery as *anything*, but then the rates would still be going down?

Midas on August 25, 2014 at 12:35 PM

What a surprise — NOT. Bet Chicago gets on the band wagon to get new anti guns laws in place. Cut down on crime and murders in Chicago and a lot of people incomes will go away. Not to mention that would prove liberals wrong, you just cant have that, especially in a place like Chicago.

The most pro-gun city in the United States – Kennesaw Georgia – where gun ownership is mandatory. It’s not the “Wild West” like some people predicted when it passed a mandatory gun ownership law. “The city of Kennesaw was selected by Family Circle magazine as one of the nation’s ‘10 best towns for families.’ The award was aimed at identifying the best communities nationally that combine big-city opportunities with suburban charm, a blend of affordable housing, good jobs, top-rated public schools, wide-open spaces, and less stress.”[1]
