Quotes of the day

posted at 10:41 pm on August 19, 2014 by Allahpundit

The City of Ferguson is exploring some serious changes to their police force. Most notably, police officers may soon be wearing cameras on their vests so all acts will be recorded…

The city will also work to rebuild the business district, as many shops have been looted, and others have boarded up their windows in preparation. They will also work to increase the number of African American officers on their police force, as the predominantly African American population of Ferguson has a predominantly white police force.

***

The policeman who shot dead a black teenager in St Louis has revealed he is under 24-hour guard and ‘can’t go out’ at this ‘stressful time’ in his first comments since the killing.

Darren Wilson text messaged a close friend to say that he can’t leave protective custody because he would be immediately recognized – making him and his young child a target…

Shepard told MailOnline: ‘People are very suspicious of law enforcement as it is and something like this happens you will always be remembered as the cop who murdered Mike Brown, regardless of what happens at trial or if he’s ever charged or fired.

‘Obviously he’s not going to be able to be a cop over there (in Ferguson) any more.

***

KIMBERLY GUILFOYLE: The police have every right to be able to defend themselves and to protect themselves and to be able to leave their house in the morning knowing that they have the appropriate and best equipment out there. We have asked them to do a really difficult job, so I’m not going to second guess, if that’s what they think they need. Don’t go out and commit crimes!…

Imagine if they didn’t have some of this protection. Maybe it would have been even worse in Ferguson!

***

It was ridiculous and wrong for police snipers to train their weapons on peaceful protestors in Ferguson. But, when you get right down to it, the militarization of police has had basically nothing to do with events there, even though the Left and parts of the Right have wanted to make that the main issue…

We’ve seen some witless heavy-handedness on the part of the cops, for instance the arrests of a couple of reporters at the McDonald’s last week. But some perspective: Cops were perfectly capable of being heavy-handed long before anyone gave them surplus military equipment. The scenario in that McDonald’s would probably have been exactly the same whether or not there were armored vehicles outside on the street or not.

Finally, there’s the argument that the militarized police were inciting the crowd. This wasn’t entirely implausible, although it seemed unlikely because it should be possible for lawful, well-intentioned people to restrain themselves from throwing things at cops whose uniforms and vehicles they don’t like. Sure enough, after a night of calm in the wake of the “demilitarization” of the police response and the insertion of Captain Ron Johnson, the lawlessness started right up again.

***

And yet, even Ray Kelly thinks police in Ferguson, Missouri, have gone way too far in their handling of the turmoil after the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson last week.

“The toothpaste is out of the tube here,” Kelly told Bloomberg News. “There’s lots of things that should have been done differently, and you have to live with them.”

The department’s first major misstep, Kelly said, was not immediately releasing all of the information surrounding Brown’s death. Telling the public what happened “certainly has the potential for quelling or lessening disturbances,” Kelly said. “You tell them what you know and tell them what you don’t know, rather than dribbling it out.”

Kelly also said it was “mind-boggling” that the Ferguson Police Department has 50 white police officers and just three black police officers in a town that’s nearly 70 percent black.

***

Even though it might sound harsh and impolitic, here is the bottom line: if you don’t want to get shot, tased, pepper-sprayed, struck with a baton or thrown to the ground, just do what I tell you. Don’t argue with me, don’t call me names, don’t tell me that I can’t stop you, don’t say I’m a racist pig, don’t threaten that you’ll sue me and take away my badge. Don’t scream at me that you pay my salary, and don’t even think of aggressively walking towards me. Most field stops are complete in minutes. How difficult is it to cooperate for that long?…

[I]f you believe (or know) that the cop stopping you is violating your rights or is acting like a bully, I guarantee that the situation will not become easier if you show your anger and resentment. Worse, initiating a physical confrontation is a sure recipe for getting hurt. Police are legally permitted to use deadly force when they assess a serious threat to their or someone else’s life. Save your anger for later, and channel it appropriately. Do what the officer tells you to and it will end safely for both of you. We have a justice system in which you are presumed innocent; if a cop can do his or her job unmolested, that system can run its course. Later, you can ask for a supervisor, lodge a complaint or contact civil rights organizations if you believe your rights were violated. Feel free to sue the police! Just don’t challenge a cop during a stop.

An average person cannot comprehend the risks and has no true understanding of a cop’s job. Hollywood and television stereotypes of the police are cartoons in which fearless super cops singlehandedly defeat dozens of thugs, shooting guns out of their hands. Real life is different. An average cop is always concerned with his or her safety and tries to control every encounter. That is how we are trained. While most citizens are courteous and law abiding, the subset of people we generally interact with everyday are not the genteel types. You don’t know what is in my mind when I stop you. Did I just get a radio call of a shooting moments ago? Am I looking for a murderer or an armed fugitive? For you, this might be a “simple” traffic stop, for me each traffic stop is a potentially dangerous encounter. Show some empathy for an officer’s safety concerns. Don’t make our job more difficult than it already is.

***

But you don’t have to have an armored vehicle to be a jerk and a danger to the public. If you have the attitude that you are owed deference and instant obedience by the people around you, and that you are justified in using violence against them if they don’t comply, we already have a problem. That’s especially true if official institutions back you up, which they do.

If you really think that everybody else should “just do what I tell you,” you’re wearing the wrong uniform in the wrong country. And if you really can’t function with some give and take—a few nasty names, a little argument—of the sort that people in all sorts of jobs put up with every damned day, do us all a favor: quit.

The law enforcement problem in this country goes well beyond boys with toys. It’s much deeper, and needs to be torn out by the roots.

Asked by Lemon if the police in Ferguson are getting a “bad rap” by the media, Johnson said, “They are getting a bad rap” because they are just trying to bring “peace” and “justice” to the city.

***BREAKING NEWS***
Remember, you saw it and heard it here first. We have heard (from a VERY connected national media source) that Ferguson officer Darren Wilson will be cleared in the shooting of Michael Brown. The key: Dorian Johnson has now admitted that Michael Brown attacked Officer Wilson and attempted to take his gun. OFFICER WILSON WILL NOT BE CHARGED! This is scary. When this news is made official, we all have reason to be concerned about the reaction.

sentinelrules on August 19, 2014 at 11:06 PM

So it looks like it was just a big old mis-understanding. I’m sure once the good folks in Ferguson hear about this they will return all the looted goods.

Newtie and the Beauty on August 19, 2014 at 11:30 PM

It’s accurate– a blowout fracture is a fracture of the thin bones that make up the walls of your eye socket–most commonly it involves the floor of the socket or the nasal side wall, and is usually caused by a blow to the eye/face.
The CT in the article shows a blowout fracture of the floor of the left eye, as noted by the arrow. Note also the accumulation of fluid below the arrow in the left maxillary sinus–that’s blood, most likely. The right maxillary sinus is clear. If it’s bad enough, the eyeball can sag down into the sinus. Obviously this requires surgery at that level, although not all orbital blowout fractures do…

He started out his ‘show’ by stating that the announcement made by the Missouri Gov. for the Brown case to be “vigorously prosecuted” meant that the Governor believed that the police officer is GUILTY. Smith is a moron – the prosecutor’s job at every level (local, state, fed) is to ALWAYS vigorously ‘prosecute’ by presenting all evidence to the Grand Jury. Therefor, the prosecutor is doing the job he is elected to do – vigorously prosecuting! It is the job of the Grand Jury to determine if there is sufficient evidence presented to bring charges against the target of the probe, NOT the Gov., NOT the prosecutor, and NOT the fuc*ing idiot of idiots, Shep Smith.

Didn’t know the urban centers of the USA were hotbeds of NRA members.

I mean that’s what you liberals mean by gun culture..amiright? All those gun crazy NRA members.

I’ll let you in on a secret…the gun culture is a fantasy perpetuated by libtards in the media. It’s like saying we have a car culture because people own cars and drive places.

It’s not the NRA members or the people who collect and shoot guns that are the problems.

HumpBot Salvation on August 19, 2014 at 11:12 PM

Everybody has requests. People here want to see the thug culture stop. Elsewhere they want to see the gun culture stop. Other places they want to see the porn culture stop.

I feel saying thug culture is just another reason some people give themselves not to have to listen to concerns of black folks. I have yet to hear one person who call him/herself conservative on this site say maybe their concerns are legitimate. I hear they deserve to caged. I hear they are animals. I hear they are looking for free stuff. I hear they are welfare queens. Nothing about the underlying issues. No everything is packaged up in they are thugs with bows.

I have said it before and I am going to say again for people with an open mind. The protest out there is beyond ferguson and Michael brown. They are secondary players in this protest. people are using that city and Michael ‘s death as a vessel to express their frustrations. Frustration many here come night after night since this began to dismiss with glee.

Keep ignoring this frustration and dismiss it and call them thugs every time a few bad apples do something stupid, and sooner or later it will engulf this country. America is not that different for the ME or Africa or Asia. People are the same everywhere. When people feel they are been pushed too far they react violently. Specially when they feel their frustrations are dismissed.

The Gov is trying to pour oil on troubled waters by telling the rioters what he thinks they want to hear; the DA is the one to decide whether or not there is sufficient cause to bring charges, based upon the evidence and, where used, the Grand Jury will determine if the DA’s evidence is solid enough to take to trial.

This is not dismissing the concerns of the African-American community – they have fared worse under Obama than ANY other definable demographic.

And given the “mass immunity” being threatened by Obama, they may end up much worse off still.

Will they continue to support someone who has done so much harm to their demographic?

Will they continue to vote for the Democrats who rubber stamp Obama’s disastrous economic policies?

Thank you. Now, can anyone tell me WHY the talking heads on virtually every cable & broadcast network news show allows Benjamin Crump (now there’s a piece of work!) to go unchallenged when he repeats his standard refrain that Michael Brown was “assassinated”? He;s been repeating it since the first interview he gave and NONE OF THESE AS*HOLES CHALLENGE HIM! He and the rest of the Crump chumps should not be allowed anywhere near a microphone and/or camera….

Black thug culture thrives on education deficits which exist because you insist on keeping Democrat politicians in power who are beholden to education union leaders who soak up education dollars. You have lousy schools and teachers because you vote for Democrats who won’t allow you to get away from public schools. So, education is one big part of your problem. The other one is a 70% unwed mother figure. White people can’t fix that for you.

Keep ignoring this frustration and dismiss it and call them thugs every time a few bad apples do something stupid, and sooner or later it will engulf this country. America is not that different for the ME or Africa or Asia. People are the same everywhere. When people feel they are been pushed too far they react violently. Specially when they feel their frustrations are dismissed.
coolrepublica on August 19, 2014 at 11:41 PM

Is that a threat?

Look, thugs are thugs and should be called out as thugs. Michael Brown was a violent, lowlife criminal thug. I don’t care what his frustrations were. The man was utter trash.

As for the idiots looting and rioting and making fools of themselves yelling about “racism” in their heads, they can eat you know what and do you know what. I should not have to listen to any of their concerns. I have nothing to do with them and want nothing to do with them. They should be ridiculed and regarded as the ignorant, know-nothing trash they are. We should not validate their ridiculous claims with any validation or respect.

And if you want to talk about frustration, how about the frustration of people who are sick of criminals and people making excuses for them. How about the frustrations of people who are sick of the racial double standard? Those are the frustrations that you ought to take more seriously.

Exactly. It’s maddening to me, but then I have to ask myself each and every time, “why am I expecting anything different?”. If you watch this Chris Hayes character for example, he is literally drooling on camera in anticipation of some sort of confrontation between police & protesters. “Tension in the air, Rachel (Maddow)!”. “You can feel it building!”. On and on….I have never wanted to reach out and smack the glasses of someone as much as I do that babbling simpleton (and I wear glasses!)….

All so they can try to get out the black vote in November.

Impeach Nixon. Throw his race baiting a$$ out of office.

Meople on August 20, 2014 at 12:08 AM

So, I’m feeling somewhat bad for both Brown and Wilson. Although more so for Wilson, since Brown is dead and presumably not going through a lot of crap. Wilson, on the other hand is ruined – no matter what actually transpired. By the way, here’s precisely what transpired. First, let me ax a question. Was anyone out there a bad kid? Not a sociopath or psychopath. And not a murderous or drug addicted or rapist or grand larceny type kid. Just your typical American bad kid. Anyone who was one knows exactly what happened there in Ferguson. Especially any cops that happened to be bad kids.
Brown was probably a basically good kid, who was acting all badass that day with his friend. His friend was likely one of those amiably weasely kids who was egging on Brown. It’s getting close to football season, so Brown was probably getting into his psyched-up pre-football mode. Both of them were probably smoking some weed and getting a little altered. They both start to get into that teenage badass mode. They go into that store and defiantly steal some cigars. Note that they didn’t empty the cash register or destroy the place, thus my suspicion that they’re not juvenile delinquents, just acting all badass. Brown pushes the shopkeeper. Note that he didn’t punch the guy or beat him to a pulp, which he could have easily done. He and his weasely but amiable friend go out of the shop, high-fiving and feeling even more badass. They walk down the middle of the road feeling all oppressed and angry at the man yet all free and happy yet all badass and waiting for some way to show how tough and football player like they are- as 18 year olds are wont to feel.

So the cop, who is probably also a good guy and basic clean cop spots these two characters and tells them to get the hell out of the middle of the road. This is just what the goofy teenagers were waiting for. They probably say something wise-assed and continue walking down the middle of the road. Wilson, being human, likely feels his authority being threatened and ramps up the tone a bit. Then Brown, feeling all testosteronish and showboatish makes the biggest mistake of his life to that point- he reaches into the cop’s car and lays hand on the cop. The cop, in a very vulnerable position with a huge kid, does his cop thing by pulling his gun. They struggle and the cop either shoots on purpose or the gun goes off in the struggle. Both of them are in maximum adrenalin overdrive at this point. Brown takes flight. Wilson pursues. And then Brown makes an even bigger biggest mistake of his life by turning around and charging Wilson, lineman style. Pure teenage football player adrenalin. He probably felt no pain from the shots to his arm. Wilson does what he has to do in that life threatening situation and somehow manages (cops are generally not great shots) to place two excellent shots into Brown’s noggin. One dead. One ruined for life.

Very sad.

Very angering are all the dipshits that don’t understand the bad karmic situation that occurred, and are just out there like vultures, feeding themselves in some way on these two ruined carcasses.

coolrepublica on August 19, 2014 at 11:05 PM

.
What The United States has had from day #1, is an “individual, personal freedom culture.”

The “individual, personal freedom culture” demands/requires that ‘individual persons’ be able to :
.
1) – Make the government afraid of them

2) – Make would-be perpetrators of robbery, rape, or any other type of assault, afraid of them, OR … STOP the perpetrator(s) if he/she/they won’t be afraid. This includes dangerous, rogue animals as well.

3) – kill wild animals for the dinner table.
.
United States private, individual citizens are to be able to have/hold/bear the physical power/capability to accomplish/perform/achieve those three listed actions, above.
.
To abolish the “culture” of privately owned firearms, you must first abolish the culture of practicing individual personal freedom.

The Governor was grotesquely unethical. It is as if he is purposefully tampering with the jury pool.

Everyone is entitled to the presumption of innocence, due process, competent representation, a speedy trial, and a fair proceeding.

Far too many, it seems, have reverted back to Party form and seek to don their old Klan hoods and get on down with a good, old-fashioned lynching…with a little beatification of a thief and assault and batterer thrown in on the side for kicks.

That’s a tragic downside of Affirmative Action. Many suspect that they benefited from it, but don’t really know, and that eats at them.

Others are not bothered by it at all, and in fact demand more and more. They probably end up in academia.

A few didn’t benefit from it, and really did deserve what they have. Sadly, they don’t get the credit they deserve.

With the speed the DA is convening a Grand Jury on this, four things are apparent:

1.) The police investigation is not complete
2.) The Internal Affairs investigation is not complete
3.) The eyewitness has had to recant/retract his initial statement after two autopsies proved him wrong
4.) The toxicology report(s) is(are) not back yet.

To the both of us, it appears Officer Wilson is being set-up, a “kangaroo court” if you will…

butch on August 20, 2014 at 12:00 AM

Most black people in America live in red states. Are they faring better?

I am sure mothers would love to have fathers for their babies, but a great deal of men available to them are in prison. And most of the men in prison are in jail for crimes white people get probation for.

Yes education matter. For many people they learn the value of that education from their parents who learned it from their parents. Did you know that sharecropping was not abolished until the 70′s in the south. So many people never got to go to school in the south. Those who did got the worst schools money could buy. In the north they were not treated any better. Many black folks left the south to look for better life hoping for different condition then where they left and they moment they showed up the people started leaving. They fled the cities from New York to Chicago. So there again they were left with underfunded schools with no money. They were poor in the south and they stayed poor in the north.

And then we had the tough on crime period. When you have no education you can’t get great jobs. When you can’t work very often you get into drugs. The though on crime crowd came in like hurricane and scooped them up to prisons. And now the problem has compounded. People love to say slavery was along time ago. No slavery was a long time ago for those who were not subjected to the aftermath. For the children of those slaves it is an uphill battle.

IIRC, Oscar, the speculated narrative appears to be the correct one; put another way, Dorian Johnson changed his tune after he lawyered up and said that yes, Michael Brown hit the cop; yes, Michael Brown went for the cop’s gun; and yes, Michael Brown taunted the cop about not shooting him before Brown decided to rush him.

Usual caveats apply… ;-)
