Open thread: Semi-retired president forced to say something about Ferguson again

posted at 3:55 pm on August 18, 2014 by Allahpundit

He’s scheduled to speak at 4 p.m. ET, just as this post is going live. The poor guy: All he wants to talk about is amnesty, impeachment, and corporate “inversions,” and those darned looters keep throwing him off-message.

A clever take on the national mood:

He’s actually not on vacation today but back at the White House for a previously scheduled briefing on Iraq and a hastily scheduled briefing by Holder on the Michael Brown case. I doubt there’ll be much news here: He’ll cast a vote of confidence in Holder’s decision to conduct a DOJ autopsy on Brown’s body and he’ll say something vague but positive-sounding about Jay Nixon’s decision to call out the National Guard, even though that sort of undercuts the anti-militarization point made by police critics lately. And there’ll be the usual on-the-one-hand demand for protesters to act peacefully with the on-the-other-hand demand for the police to use no excessive force. This is still worth watching, though, as the longer the Ferguson drama goes on, the farther Obama will need to stretch to satisfy disparate constituencies. Some black commentators, like Michael Eric “Holder is the new Moses” Dyson, are starting to grumble that O’s been too quiet about how the police treat black men. Other people, media figures among them, are getting fidgety that looting’s still happening more than a week after Brown was killed. Good luck on the tightrope, champ. Don’t look down!

He’ll also say a few words about airstrikes against ISIS, of which there have already been 68 and counting. The next time someone tells you that Republicans reflexively oppose everything O does, show them this poll from Pew. Democrats support the airstrikes 54/35; Republicans support them 71/14. While we wait, for those who haven’t heard it yet, here’s the audio of Dana Loesch’s chat on Friday with “Josie,” a woman purporting to be a friend of the cop who shot and killed Michael Brown and relaying his account of what happened. People are sending me links to Don Lemon talking about this on air today, as if somehow we’re first hearing of “Josie” only now and CNN had discovered her. Not so. Loesch had this posted three days ago. If you don’t have time for the clip, here’s a quickie transcript.

Based on what evidence is he a murderer??

He shot a thug who had just robbed a store. The thug was huge and had beat the cop in the face and attempted to steal his gun. Sounds perfectly reasonable to kill the SOB to me.

You sure are stupid. A new troll unleashed.

txdoc on August 18, 2014 at 4:57 PM

You on the other hand are not biased and completely reasonable. However you are taking everything the cop said as the truth. Of course, this murderer who just shot a kid more than 6 times has no reason to lie…has no reason to tell events in a way to justify his crime.

Darren Wilson is a murderer, and no matter how much it pisses you guys off, he will pay for this crime. First off, he will never work as a cop again ever in his life and rightly so, because doesn’t deserve to be one. He will also go to jail for a very long time, and the family will sue his murdering asss, and he will be held civilly liable. Even after he leaves jail, he will have to work for the rest of his life to pay off that civil judgement. That’s if he’s able to get another job, because I doubt many companies will hire a known murderer.

He knows he screwed up, and if he didn’t know before, I bet he does now.

Chudi on August 18, 2014 at 5:17 PM

I don’t think eon will mind my posting this here, from the Headlines thread.
Might otherwise be lost to those not on that thread.

I haven’t opined on this so far because I wanted to see the PM (Post Mortem) results first. Now that I have, here’s my take.

First of all, the GSWs (Gun Shot Wounds) are not “scattered all over the body” of the decedent (dead person, i.e. Mr. Brown) as Mr. Crump says. Looking at the PM diagram here, it shows that aside from the GSWs to the head and neck area, all GSWs were concentrated in the area of the right arm.

I’m seeing three entries in the right arm, one of them an avulsed (torn) wound in the mound of the right palm (base of the thumb area). This looks like a graze hit, and would be consistent with the slug “scraping” along that part of the hand enroute elsewhere; the cliched’ cowboy movie “just a flesh wound, Ma’am” hit.

It most likely “lines up” with the bicep wound above the elbow, indicating that the arm was bent when the round impacted. This would be consistent with a “defensive” wound on the subject, i.e. a wound suffered while in close engagement with the shooter. I’m postulating (SWAG) that Mr. Brown was in close assault on the officer when officer drew weapon, and Mr. Brown by reflex threw his right hand in front of him (thereby ceasing his assault for a split-second), and received a bullet that creased the right hand before hitting him further up the arm. Which is consistent with an assault performed on the officer while the latter was still behind the wheel of the car, and trying to fend off the attacker (Mr. Brown) who was standing next to the car and reaching in.

The rest of the right arm/upper right torso hits are also consistent with this version. The dispersion of hits is consistent with the officer shooting one-handed, across his own body from right to left, upward from the sitting position.

Having done this in training against silhouette targets at ranges up to 25 yards, I can assure you that in my case at least, accuracy goes to hell in a handbasket. Instead of my usual three to five-inch one-hand groups, I got what looked more like shotgun patterns with serious vertical stringing of up to a foot and a half. And I was shooting from a chair over a plywood barrier simulating a car door, not from a real car.

In short, the dispersion looks like what I would expect to see in such a shooting as described by the officer.

The angled wound just above the elbow traversing the base of the muscle anchorage is odd. It might be a graze bullet impact, but could also be a cut, possibly acquired in the previous activity at the store.

Moving on to the chest, we see a wound in the upper right pectoral area. This could be a “re-entry” wound from one of the arm hits, or a graze from a near-miss; the avulsion does not tell us much either way.

The neck and head wounds are interesting. The right eye hit looks like a classic “cranio-ocular” shot, i.e., the way we were taught to stop an assailant who hadn’t stopped after multiple upper torso hits. The dotted line indicates that it entered at a downward angle, exited under the right side of the chin (very likely breaking his jaw in the process), and the bullet then re-entered just in front of the clavicle (collarbone) to the right of the esophagus. Exactly where that bullet ended up is of interest; my money would be upper lobe of the right lung or possibly upper right ventricle of the heart. (If it hit the collarbone or a rib, though, all bets are off; it could be in his liver, for all I know.)

The thing is, this would be a failed cranio-ocular “stop” shot. The point of the CO shot is to hit the brain; this one missed it by a country mile, due to the extreme downward angle.

The crown of the head shot is what ended the fight. It went vertically down into the brain and probably ended its trajectory in the brain stem or upper spine. That will shut any higher vertebrate down, pretty much permanently. (Just not necessarily instantly, again never mind Hollywood.)

The head hits are consistent with the assailant having his head “down”, as in a charge or “bull rush” as the witnesses keep saying. (Must be a local slang term; I’d call it a football linebacker’s charge.) It would reduce the attacker’s profile, and would be a reasonable maneuver if the attacker knew he was facing an adversary armed with a firearm.

Note that there are no wounds in the back, entry, exit, or otherwise. Also that the head wounds are not consistent with the officer shooting down at the deceased while deceased was prone or supine on the ground. In fact, none of the GSWs are consistent with anything but the decedent being on his feet, facing the shooter, and mostly at less than arm’s length range.

Dr. Baden noted the lack of GSR. I’m inclined to think a test of the decedent’s shirt would show lots of it on the upper right quadrant.

My estimate is that the PM results support the officer’s statement, not that of the other witnesses. Keep in mind that peer pressure and an “us vs. them” mentality can drastically affect witness testimony. (To say nothing of opportunistic activity by people with “agendas”.)

That’s my professional opinion as a firearms and trace evidence technician. YMMV.

h/t from Boston radio host/Boston Herald writer Howie Carr…is Holder gonna investigate this case in Ferguson from just last August?

Suspects hit hot dog vendor with hammer at local Home Depot

(KMOV) – Police are hoping surveillance video will help catch four suspects after a hot dog vender was robbed and attacked with a stolen hammer at a Ferguson Home Depot on Wednesday.

Authorities said the hot dog vendor was standing at the front entrance of the Home Depot in the 10900 block of New Halls Ferry Rd. around 3 p.m. when four shoplifters walked by and swiped his cell phone.

Police said the vendor chased them out of the store, but was struck in the head with a hammer one of the suspects had stolen. The suspects then got in a car and drove away.

The bloodied victim was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Authorities were looking at surveillance video to help identify the suspects.

Do we know if Darren Wilson had time to stop and ponder?
Do we know many facts at all yet?

That’s the difference when you say I should give him the benefit of the doubt.

No. The difference is I haven’t convicted Michael Brown of much of anything either.

4 suspects arrested in the slaying of 2 N.J. teens

http://www.nj.com/essex/index.ssf/2014/08/bond_tevlin_arrests_shell.html

NEWARK — Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the unrelated shooting deaths of two Essex County teenagers, each of which began as a robbery, authorities said.

Andre Fields, 31, of Irvington was charged in the death of 17-year-old Cheyanne Bond, a recent graduate of Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark, who was shot and killed on June 29 after two men approached her and a friend and demanded they hand over a iPhone, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray

Three men, including a double-murder suspect from Seattle, were charged in the death of 19-year-old Brendan Tevlin, a Livingston resident who had just returned home from his first year of college at the University of Richmond in Virginia.

West Orange resident Eric Williams, 18, stayed behind the wheel while Villagran and Brown — already wanted for the shooting death of two gay men in Seattle on June 1 — hopped out and surrounded Tevlin’s Jeep Liberty, according to authorities.

“He was, at this time, a simple victim of an intent to rob,” Murray said.

One of the men had a brief conversation with Tevlin before Brown, who was standing on the vehicle’s passenger side, allegedly fired 10 bullets, eight of which struck Tevlin.

What I like about the leftists here is that they decided that the:

a) know the motive of Police Officer Wilson;

b) know all the facts that led to the shooting and know there was not justification for the shooting;

c) know Officer Wilson’s intent.

Basically, they have decided that there is no need for:

a) an investigation

b) a review of facts and evidence;

c) a decision whether the shooting was justified;

d) a decision whether to bring criminal charges if the shooting was unjustified; or

e) a jury trial.

My question to leftists – should we apply your reasoning and logic to all criminal cases in the future? Every time, for instance, a black man is charged with a crime, should we forgo “a” through “e” above and simply throw that suspect into prison?

that is essentially what you are arguing for/claiming here.

You cannot have it both ways. either you believe in rule of law, fair investigations of potential crimes, and rational review of facts and evidence or you do not believe in such things.

by arguing over and over that Officer Wilson “murdered” Brown before much evidence or facts are known, by arguing over and over that Officer Wilson must “pay” for what he did without much evidence or facts being known – you are essentially stating that rule of law doesn’t matter and that you want tribal justice.

If that is truly how you want our criminal justice system to operate going forward, please continue in your diatribes.

Monkeytoe on August 19, 2014 at 8:35 AM

Monkeytoe on August 19, 2014 at 8:35 AM

Adding to my comment,

—(1) it is entirely possible that once all of the facts are uncovered that Officer Wilson had no reasonable justification for shooting Big Mike Brown.

If that is the case, he will likely face criminal charges.

—(2) It is also possible that Officer Wilson had legal justification for shooting (i.e., Brown case at him, Officer Wilson reasonably feared for his safety).

—-(3) It is even theoretically possible – although incredibly unlikely – that Officer Wilson simply decided to kill Brown for no reason and it was, in fact, an “execution” as the leftists claim.

Again, if this turns out to be the case, he will face criminal charges.

But, we simply do not have enough information at this point. the constant refrain from the left that Brown was “unarmed” is meaningless in terms of proving 1, 2, or 3 above. Nor does it matter that Brown was “a teenager” or “a good kid”.

All that matters is what happened between Brown and Wilson. And we simply do not know yet for sure. We have bits and pieces and theories. But we don’t have all of the facts.

Rioting solves none of this. Calling Wilson a “pig” and demanding that he be “punished” is just silly and childish at this point.

Monkeytoe on August 19, 2014 at 8:45 AM
